CBS has already renewed a few shows for the 2024-2025 season—Tracker (Season 2), Ghosts (Season 4), and Fire Country (Season 3)—and one that seems to be a lock, for its 22nd season, is NCIS.
“You never know how things are going to go,” Sean Murray (who has played Timothy McGee on the long-running procedural since its first season) tells TV Insider. “But knowing the way that things are going now and seeing the response we’re getting here in this sort of abbreviated Season 21, I think things will go well and I would expect to see a Season 22, very much so.” (Season 21 is 10 episodes, with the fifth airing on March 25.)
That sentiment echoes what Brian Dietzen (who has been playing Dr. Jimmy Palmer since Season 1) told us ahead of the special tribute episode to the late David McCallum and his character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, he co-wrote. “I’m hoping [there will be another season]. I think that no one ever wants to count their chickens, but I think that the show has been doing really well,” he said. “And why stop at 1,000? I feel like we’re halfway there. We want a clean, even 2,000. We’ll just keep it rolling.”
The franchise, which reaches its 1,000th episode with NCIS’ April 15 installment, keeps expanding, too. While Los Angeles and New Orleans have both ended (after 14 and seven seasons, respectively), Hawai’i is in its third season (and we have a good feeling about its chances for a fourth), Sydney has aired its first, and two new series have been ordered.
Joining CBS’ lineup for the 2024-2025 season is the prequel NCIS: Origins, following a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) in 1991 as he starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. Mark Harmon, who starred as Gibbs on NCIS for 19 seasons, will narrate and executive produce. And over on the streaming service Paramount+ is coming an untitled spinoff with Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reprising their characters from the mothership, Tony and Ziva. In that show, Tony and Ziva have been raising their daughter, Tali, together. When Tony’s security company is attacked, they must go on the run across Europe, try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.

Tom Hanks in Bridge of Spies (Steven Spielberg, 2015)
Cast: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Alan Alda, Amy Ryan, Dominick Lombardozzi, Victor Verhaege, Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch, Austin Stowell, Will Rogers, Mark Fichera, Brian Hutchison, Joshua Harto, Henny Russell, Rebekah Brockman. Screenplay: Matt Charman, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. Cinematography: Janusz Kaminski. Production design: Adam Stockhausen. Film editing: Michael Kahn. Music: Thomas Newman.
Steven Spielberg is unquestionably a great director, with a seldom-equaled skill at visual storytelling and at building tension and suspense. But he tries too hard to make a statement in Bridge of Spies -- something about defending the Constitution -- when it could have been simply an engaging film about Cold War tensions. It also suffers from the wrong kind of star power: Tom Hanks has devolved from a terrific actor, skilled at both comedy and drama, into the movies' iconic Good Guy. Casting him as the lawyer James Donovan, forced to defend a Soviet spy, deprives the film of any ambiguity about Donovan's defense of Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance). Hanks's Donovan can simply wrap himself in the Constitution and we're with him all the way, even as public opinion of the time turns against him. As a film actor Hanks has lost his dark side, so we know that whoever he plays will triumph. Imagine Bridge of Spies with Donovan played by George Clooney or Bradley Cooper, stars with just a touch of shadow in their personae, and you can see what I mean. Fortunately, the film is otherwise well-cast, including Rylance's Oscar-winning turn as Abel, as well as Scott Shepherd's impatient CIA man and Sebastian Koch's duplicitous East German lawyer, and the screenplay by Matt Charman and Joel and Ethan Coen manages a good deal of suspense. (Sometimes at the expense of historical accuracy: Donovan was never shot at in his home, as the film has it.) The Coen brothers were brought in to work on the first draft of Charman's screenplay, specifically on the section in which Donovan finds himself negotiating separately with the Soviets and the East Germans to engineer an exchange of Abel for imprisoned U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) and an American student, Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers), who has been accidentally arrested in East Berlin. It's the best part of the movie, as Donovan wrangles not only with the conflicting egos and bureaucracies of the Soviet and East German officials but also with the CIA's insistence that only Powers need be included in the deal. Unfortunately, Spielberg doesn't know when his movie is over. Bridge of Spies should end with the exchange of spies at the bridge, but Spielberg keeps it running as Donovan boards the plane for home, returns to the arms of his family just as the news of his successful negotiation is breaking, gives his wife (Amy Ryan) the jar of marmalade he promised to bring her from London, witnesses her realization that he wasn't in London after all, and soon afterward rides to work on the bus where a woman who had previously frowned at him as a traitor now smiles at him as a hero after seeing his picture in the newspaper. All the while, Thomas Newman's score is telling us what we're supposed to feel. It's  sentimental anticlimax, of the sort that many critics decry in what are usually regarded as among Spielberg's greatest films, Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Schindler's List (1993). Bridge of Spies would have been a lot better if Spielberg hadn't given in to his instinct for overemphasis.

The Hating Game starring Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell will be released in theaters by Vertical Entertainment later this year
Tumblr media
Vertical Entertainment has signed a deal with Mister Smith Entertainment for North American distribution rights to romantic comedy “The Hating Game,” which stars “Pretty Little Liars” actor Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell, who also appeared with her in “Fantasy Island.” Vertical is planning to give it a theatrical release later this year.
“The Hating Game,” which is based on the hit novel by Sally Thorne, tells the story of kind-hearted Lucy Hutton (Hale) and her cold, efficient nemesis Joshua Templeton (Stowell). Resolving to achieve professional success without compromising her ethics, Lucy embarks on a ruthless game of one-upmanship against Josh, a rivalry that is impossibly complicated by her growing attraction to him.
Peter Hutchings (“Then Came You”) directed Christina Mengert’s adaptation of the book.
“The Hating Game” novel was a 2018 USA Today Bestseller and was published in more than 20 countries. It is often identified as one of the key originators of the recent rom-com boom. It ranks seventh in Oprah Magazine’s 20 Best Romance Novels of All-Time. Claude Dal Farra, Brice Dal Farra and Brian Keady of BCDF Pictures produced along with Convergent Media’s Santosh Govindaraja and Dan Reardon, which is also financing. David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales and also co-financing the film.
The movie is in post-production having wrapped principal photography on Dec. 23 in upstate New York.
As well as “Pretty Little Liars,” Hale is known for the shows “Katy Keene,” “Life Sentence” and “Privileged.” Her film work includes starring roles in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2,” “Truth or Dare,” “Scream 4” and “Fantasy Island.” She is currently shooting AMC’s crime series “Ragdoll” from Sid Gentle Films, the British production company behind “Killing Eve.”
Stowell starred in the critically acclaimed 2019 independent feature “Swallow,” opposite Haley Bennett, the film “Stratton,” opposite Dominic West and Gemma Chan, as well as Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” anthology TV series. He previously starred in the film “Fantasy Island” and the mini-series “Catch 22.” His film credits include “Whiplash,” “Bridge of Spies,” “12 Strong,” “Battle of the Sexes,” “Colossal,” and “Dolphin Tale” 1 & 2. His upcoming films include “The Long Home,” based on the acclaimed novel.
Vertical partner Peter Jarowey stated: “We’re excited to be partnering with BCDF Pictures once again to bring this funny and relatable romantic comedy to audiences later this year.”
Mister Smith’s David Garrett commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have found a home in Vertical for this much sought-after romcom. They are the perfect fit and will do us all proud.”
BCDF Pictures’ Claude Dal Farra added: “We are thrilled to be working with Peter, Josh, and the team on our latest romantic comedy.”
MSE is selling another BCDF Pictures adaptation of a NY Times bestseller, “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry,” starring Kunal Nayar, Hale and Christina Hendricks, and BCDF Pictures’ adaptation of the New York Times bestseller “The Language of Flowers,” starring Kiersey Clemons. (source)
