#Boom does give Knuckles more depth outside of dumb

I’ve seen so many people say Movie!Knuckles is a lot like his Boom counterpart but, while I understand that in the sense that his confusion about Earth concepts can come off a bit dumb and/or oblivious, I don’t know if I’d agree with that.
Between Movie!Knuckles’ temper and his naïveté from the fact Eggman has tricked him, I’d argue he’s more similar to his Sonic X counterpart.
If you’ve seen an episode of Sonic X that involves Knuckles, you know what I’m talking about.
Yes, sometimes Knuckles has airheaded moments, it happens, but he’s not an idiot the entire time. Gullibility is often confused for idiocy. They’re not always independent of each other but they’re also not always dependent on each other either. Knuckles is a character that can go both ways, where sometimes he’s genuinely naïve to the fact he’s being lied to and other times he is being dumb. And Sonic X does do both lol but that isn’t rlly my point.
A similarity between Movie!Knuckles and X!Knuckles is that they’re both blind to the fact Eggman has tricked them because he told them exactly what they want to hear in a moment of desperation.
Using episode 5 of Sonic X as an example, the opener to the episode is Knuckles being frustrated that he’s been trapped on another world and that he’s unable to do his job (guard the Master Emerald) because of Sonic’s carelessness back at the base. Noticing this, Eggman uses that as an opportunity to push Knuckles to blame Sonic even more by telling him a false story about what happened that night at the base and that Sonic is taking all the chaos emeralds for himself and not letting anyone get back home. Eggman even pushes further by swearing he’s changed his ways and that all he wants is to go home too and if Knuckles can help him take down sonic, then everyone can get home.
All Knuckles wants is to go back home so he can guard the Master Emerald, it’s his purpose, and since he’s already annoyed with Sonic, he believes Eggman’s word.
Now as audience members we know Eggman is lying through his teeth, the show doesn’t try to hide that Eggman is lying, but we have omniscience, we can see things the characters can’t. Knuckles is in a state of anger and desperation so of course he would believe Eggman when he’s crying on his knees that he wants to go home. There’s even a later episode in season 3 that proposes the idea that the reason Knuckles falls for these tricks so much is that deep down he wants to believe that everyone can change and have good intentions, and I really like that tbh.
Getting back to my point, though, Eggman lies to Knuckles in this episode in an attempt to get rid of Sonic so he can go searching for the rest of the chaos emeralds without Sonic in his way. Eggman is also aware that Sonic and his friends already have one emerald, so he wants to get his hands on that too, so let’s have Knuckles do the dirty work.
This is very similar to what Robotnik does in the movie. Once Knuckles mentions “Ultimate power” Robotnik immediately wants to be let in on this information. So when Knuckles explains what the Master Emerald is and the type of power you can access from it, of course Robotnik wants to get his hands on it for his own reasons. But he can’t let Knuckles know that, so he just tells Knuckles they can help each other to find the emerald together. They can use it together. It’s all about them working together and being a team, or having an alliance. The end goal is finding the Master Emerald, something the Echidna has been desperately searching for ever since he lost his clan and his family, so Knuckles agrees.
After all, why wouldn’t he? At this point, Robotnik has done nothing to prove he’s a liar or that Knuckles shouldn’t trust him. In fact, he’s proved that Knuckles can trust him because he said he’d help Knuckles find Sonic and he did.
And just like Sonic X, we, the audience, know Robotnik is lying and using Knuckles so he can get the Emerald for himself. Again, we have omniscience. We even see him make that clear to Stone that all he wants is the power and that Knuckles helping him is just a means to an end. He only needs Knuckles to help him find the Master Emerald and after that he has no more use for the echidna. But just because we know that, that doesn’t mean Knuckles does.
Knuckles is in a state of desperation and anger over what happened to his father and his tribe several years ago so he spends most of the movie being more focused on honoring his ancestors and fulfilling his destiny than noticing that Robotnik is using him. The only time he really questions Robotnik’s intentions is when Sonic goes after an injured Tails instead of getting the compass back and Robotnik dismisses that as unimportant. To Knuckles, seeing Sonic care more about his brother’s wellbeing than an object that he’s been chasing and fighting for, is a very honorable thing because that is exactly what he would do for his tribe if they were still around and what his tribe once did for him.
This isn’t something Knuckles dwells too long on, though, because they’re so close to finding the Emerald but that moment is there to let us know that Knuckles is a bit wary to Robotnik’s intentions.
Knuckles is a character with good intentions, more often than not what he’s doing is what he believes to be the right thing. So when he is being told what he needs or what he wants to hear or anything that comes to the same goal that he has and that they want to help him, regardless of who it’s coming from and if they’re convincing enough, he’ll believe them because he wants to believe that everyone has the same intentions that he does.
Sometimes that may come off as dumb but overall that’s not what he is. What Knuckles truly is, is a naïve kid.
