Probably not every day you go out to photograph a particular train with no particular plans to ride it, but end up riding it anyway...or maybe that's just my limited experience which changed today while heading home after a day's trainspotting along the Lickey line and Birmingham & Worcester canal. Some of these were more test shots, but they made good material to have a bit more fun with without having to worry too much about subject clarity, which tends to be more of a concern in most of my work. https://www.instagram.com/p/Co5pGQHtldi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’ve found myself comparing Brum to Manc and as a boater & tourist I much prefer Birmingham. Yes the moorings in Castlefield are more private and there is open space to play ball with Ben but there are absolutely no facilities for boaters, in Manchester boaters are not welcomed at all but here in Brum boaters are positively encouraged to visit and spend their hard earned pennies in the local economy.

Apologises for the dark pics but the sun hasn’t been out for a month but at least it has stopped pissing down, for now.
We’ve been here 3 nights and are both ready to move, tomorrow. We’re heading onto the Worcs & Brum canal which will take us down to Worcester and onto the mighty river Severn. The canal is 30 miles long and has 58 locks including the famous 36 lock flight at Tardebigge, the longest flight on the network and must be done in one hit because there is no where to moor mid flight.

We have returned to Kings Norton and rejoined the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. In turning left, we didn’t hit the boat that had moored across the junction – presumably to collect dents.

Diary of an Intermittent Runner - Week 2
Well, that was a very damp week!!!! My usual running route contains Pitchcroft racecourse in Worcester, which is on the bank of the river Severn. By Tuesday, it was actually part of the river Severn!!! An alternative was needed, so it was off to Worcester Country Park for a run round the woods - the rain had made this quite a tough route (especially for someone who has just begun trying to regain some level of fitness). Two days of running round the woods was more than enough, so another route was found.
We are so lucky living where we do. It's about a mile to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. So this has been on my route for a couple of runs this week. For this weeks Parkrun, I ventured up the motorway to Canon Hill Park in Birmingham. Probably the biggest Parkrun event that I have taken part in. 561 runners braving the wind and rain.
Tumblr media
So another good running week - no records broken, but another 20.74 miles done. This week's soundtrack was:
Public Service Broadcasting - Every Valley
David Bowie - Blackstar
Peter Gabriel - Up
Jeff Beck - Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop
Sparks - Sparks (the first 'Sparks Friday' - going to work through their back catalogue every Friday)
Heaven 17 - How Men Are
Back to it again tomorrow - the focus of the coming week will be my diet (have already lost 5.75 lbs in the last two weeks, but have not been too worried about what I have eaten)
See you next week (I'll focus on another one of the charities I am supporting in the next update).
Take care
Pete

John Madin, Architect & Planner, before his large municipal projects in town centres, mainly Birmingham, designed commercial housing for his first large project, redeveloping the area in the well-heeled #Edgbaston on the non-industrialised side of the Worcester Canal, (as inner-city areas were required to increase their population density, post WWII) the #Calthorpe Estate. Here I am in the shadow of Warwick Crest tower - still leafy, still loved, mid-century modern living that has endured, here at least... And, in brutalist style alongside the modular synth I’m using a 1-bit drum machine - The Lunchbeat!
