#HIATUS KAIYOTE PITCHFORK PLUS#
Given the Melbourne-born four piece’s predilection for spinning sultry golden-hour moods out of soul, R&B, jazz-funk and beatwise noodling, it wouldn’t. Their track record of fine releases and festival presence ground to a sudden halt. Sony Music Masterworks comprises Masterworks, Sony Classical, OKeh, Portrait, and Masterworks Broadway imprints. Since 2015’s sophomore album Choose Your Weapon, Hiatus Kaiyote have been through hell and back. AMA is Over, thanks Hiatus Kaiyote Nai + Bender from Hiatus Kaiyote - Ask Us Anything 798. The vinyl is available on February 2 nd and features 2-LP 180 gram records in a gatefold jacket with a lyric insert and art print. Pitchfork's 'Great Records You May Have Missed: Winter 2018' Close.

Needle Paw features stripped down versions of Hiatus Kaiyote favorites, like 'Atari,' 'Mobius,' and 'Borderline With My Atoms.' The album also features new songs like the single 'Crossfire/So Into You' which Pitchfork named "Best New Track," plus unique takes on classics like Jimi Hendrix's 'Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland).' This is my first attempt at executing visual concepts, editing, etc." The old eucalyptus trees are still standing in the water and in my early teens I was haunted by their presence. It was once a valley that was lived in and was eventually evacuated to become a dam. The Hume Weir where we filmed is close to Mount Beauty where I grew up. My stage name Nai Palm was originally my fire performance name pre-dating any music endeavours. "I wanted to celebrate where I come from. "Shooting the video for 'Homebody' was really personal for me," says Nai. The video, which was filmed in Victoria, Australia, features Nai Palm using fire swords – performance art that she often practiced prior to the beginning of Hiatus Kaiyote. Listening to this tonight.  I first listened to it on a airplane flight.  Thomas Cook aren’t much of an airline, but they have a pretty decent hi-fi.
We all know Ain’t misbehavin and Black and blue and Herbie Jeebies.  But what about China, my Chinatown?  It is something I don’t associate with Louis Armstrong: it is reLENTless.
I hardly know any Armstrong, I am a neophyte, gawping at the sounds thinking “I don’t quite understand this” or sometimes “Sorry, this is boring me” but also “Fuck - this has a joy and a sense of bursting humanity that I haven’t heard for...for EVER”.
I think the best record review I have read, or at any rate the one that always sticks, is this one, written by Christgau, inevitably, a devotee of Armstrong.  He says (it’s about a monster box set called Portrait of the Artist as a young man, but it could be about most Armstrong sets I suppose):
I don't mean to start a parlor game, but does greatest artist of the 20th century mean anything to you? I mean, who else you got? Picasso? Joyce? Renoir? Elvis? So here's one $50 item you owe yourself. I doubt it could be winnowed much--expanded would be better (where's "I'm Not Rough"?), with four-plus hours an ideal introductory length. If some of it is less beatwise than a punk funkateer might hope, try to imagine how startling it sounded in an aural world that was still on the operetta standard, where John Philip Sousa ruled brass and Scott Joplin was jungle music. Then pay attention. Home in on Pops's trumpet solos--their strength, clarity, daring, ease, humor, swing, melodicism, and endless newness. Enjoy his irrepressible vocals without calling them comic relief--the comic is everywhere in this music. Get to know the brilliant originals. Hear how he takes over blues and hokum, pop classics and pop disposables without belittling his sources. Ask yourself whether high and low mean any damn thing at all.
That’s writing.

At the heart of Brazilian culture are a number of specific local musical styles—all intensely rhythmic—that match the pulses of the settings where they were born, whether urban or rural. The sounds of samba and baile funk have captured international attention, and a vibrant bass music and beats scene centered in São Paulo—which has soundtracked sweaty club nights for decades now—is beginning to make its way to a wider stage. The current leaders of this scene? Beatwise Recordings, a five-year-old label dedicated to highlighting the best thumping kicks and pulsing synths the country has produced.
Prior to his Beatwise release, Mestre Xim had been toiling away, building the Carioca (Rio) contingent of the international beats scene. With Internação Vol. 1, Xim caught the ear of the national Brazilian rap scene with diverse samples and dusty, off-kilter drums. His focus on global influences shines through in his bite sized-compositions, especially on tracks like “Japan Dreams,” in which he flips Eastern folk instrumentation.

ESCUTE A SEGUNDA BEAT TAPE DO SONO TWS, 'MOCADO’
vimeo
