No collection of alien artifacts would be complete without some Japanese toys. The best are puzzling, gorgeous and demand to be played with. Anyone who can resist my Blood- Sucking Tool or Deathpion has to be terminally serious. Anyone who can transform my VF-1A Valkyrie from Battroid to Fighter without instructions has been practicing at home !

Bandai/IMAI Macross 1:72 VF-1J Super Valkyrie plamo build update 4 June 15th, 2021

Above I have taken the pilot figure from the Hasegawa VF-1 Weapons Set. Yes, the pilot suit is from the DYRL movie and not the TV show (like this model is), but oh well. This Imai kit isn’t incredibly accurate anyway, so I’m taking artistic liberties. I used Oyumaru to make molds of the parts and injected them with UV-curing clear resin for two reasons: 1. the UV resin is easier than using epoxy putty because it is sturdier, and 2. I intend to light the pilot suit up as you see int he movie. The shoulder guards glow and there is also a monitor on the chest. I’m still working on this, so I will show this in a later update.

I also used Oyumaru and UV resin to copy the cockpit’s console. Again, this part is inaccurate, but I’ll have fun with it, nevertheless. I trapped an SMD into the bottom and encased it in UV resin. I then painted the surface underneath with white paint to help refract the light inside, and then I light-blocked it with black paint.

I used stills from the movie (and TV show) to make my own clear waterslide decals. On the left is Misa, in the middle is a battle scene, and on the right is just a blue grid pattern.

The VF-1J head lacked proper face detail, so I re-created it with sheet styrene. It looks much better now! 

I needed to putty in the holes where the landing gears go. I secured sheet styrene on the inside and used Vallejo Plastic Putty to fill in the holes. 

There was some missing detail on what are the shoulders in Battroid mode, so I scribed this. People may scoff at these older kits for their lack of detail, but part of the challenge is improving such kits and challenging oneself.

After painting, I noticed a real lack of detail on the middle part of the fastpack. Using strips of styrene, I created a grill intake pattern. The featureless surface just bothered me. The worst part of this kit has got to be the shape of the nose, but I can deal with that. I have heard that there is an old Macross guide book that demonstrates how to alter the nose on this old Imai tooling, but it goes for a bit of money and at this point, I am ready to just fall forward.

Movie-Exclusive Valkyrie from Macross Delta Will Become a DX Chogokin Figure

  Macross Delta the Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!! premiered earlier this month in Japan, carrying on the story of the latest series in the sci-fi franchise. Among other reveals, Mirage Farina Jenius got to pilot a new Valkyrie. And early next year, you can get your hands on it, too — in figure form, that is.

  The VF-31AX Kairos Plus will join the DX Chogokin line, a Macross-centric sub-series of Bandai's hefty, transformable Chogokin mecha figure series. 

    The Valkyrie stands approximately 260mm tall in its Battroid formation and comes with alternate left and right hands, melee knives, gun pods, a pilot figure, and a display stand. Just like the real thing in the series, this Valkyrie can be transformed between Battroid, GERWALK, and Fighter modes:

    The VF-31AX Kairos Plus (Mirage Farina Jenius version) goes on sale for 23,000 yen (excluding tax) in March 2022. Hayate Immelman's Valkyrie will also be on sale starting in December, with a special display pedestal for early buyers.

The SuYa-12, NATO reporting name “Lawyer” was an interceptor made by the Sukhoi and Yakovlev. It’s maximum flight speed was mach 2.2, although to reach this speed it never had a true “Battroid” configuration and instead had a gerwalk mode that could hover fairly quickly over the ground. In gerwalk mode the cockpit would retract and be covered up by a two piece blast shield. and to see out of the cockpit while it was covered it had a relatively large (for Russian standards) head. It also had 30 minutes worth of after burner fuel, so it could cruise at high speeds much longer. For weapons it had 4 3 slot missile racks for a maximum of 12 missiles. 4 25mm auto cannons mounted on the arms. (barrels would retract and be covered for fighter mode) and two 10mm machine guns mounted in the nose.
