School of Rock Round 1
In January 2020 I decided to finally start taking bass guitar lessons. I joined group music lessons at the local School of Rock. The usual schedule is to have a live performance every 3-4 months, however the COVID pandemic had other plans. We ended up finally getting to perform a streaming online show, topping out at about 40 viewers. Not exactly rock stars, but you have to start somewhere.

The Beatles - Let It Be
My first attempt at a Paul McCartney bassline and I have an entirely new respect for him as a musician.
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
A fun song on bass - trying to get everyone to play the shots in sync at the start of the song can be a challenge
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
One of my choices, such a cool song. Getting the rythyms right took some practice.
The Black Keys - Tighten Up
Just a fun song to play - took us a while to get the tempo change right.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Required learning for any new group lesson.
Blondie - Call Me
A good learning experience - has some time signature changes, a key change, and an extended bridge section.
Green Day - When I Come Around
My first experience with hammer-ons and pull-offs. Mike Dirnt does not get enough love as a bass player.
Neil Young - Rockin in the Free World
A good song for a bunch of Winnipeggers. The guitar player gets two solos to show off - we never played the song exactly the same way twice, we just kept the song going until he was done soloing.
Pat Benetar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Another classic and a good beginner song.
Def Leppard - Rock of Ages
I鈥檓 not a Def Leppard fan, but the other members of the group like them.
Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song)
A good song to work on dynamics.
Joan Jett - I Hate Myself for Loving You
Another good beginner song.
The Tragically Hip - New Orleans is Sinking
My other choice for the set. Great Canadian song and fun to play.
