Hi Sleepy! Runaways is literally a trip through the woods so here's an excerpt!

Burrs catch on Hannah’s socks and stick into the skin around her ankle as her boots squelch in the mud. She tries to memorize the details of her surroundings as she walks, and begins to mark her passage with the seashells. One rests in the crook of a tree trunk where she veers off the path. Another sits on a boulder when she walks out of eyesight of the first. She rations them, unsure of how far she’ll need to travel before she runs out.

The path takes her uphill, around the bend in the mountain. She enjoys the sun filtering through the last of the leaves still clinging to the trees, warming her against the late fall chill. She kicks her feet through the litter of the forest floor and whistles a tune Cecelia composed last week that’s stuck in her head. Both of them love having background music, and they often make their own songs, bandying the tune back and forth and making each other laugh with increasingly ridiculous rhymes. She leaves off in the middle of a phrase, no longer having the heart to hum without her duet partner.

As she walks, she wonders. How old are these trees? Their trunks are so wide she cannot wrap her arms around them. What history did they bear witness to when they were only saplings? Which ones do the sprites call their home? Do the boulders guard fossils or do they represent the ruins of an ancient city? Why do they grow up out of the mountain where they do? Could they be back doors to a dwarven fortress under the mountain?

Her imagination supplies stories as an explanation – and a few spooks when she hears an unexpected noise. They entertain her for a short while, but she knows they will not satisfy her need to know the truth. She wonders if her inventions unwittingly contain reality. She must be content with wondering.
