I’m rewatching Alias because it was added on Disney+(France). And gosh I love this show so much. I loved it at the time and love it now. Jack Bristow? One of the best TV-dad.
But ffs the writings make zero sense sometimes, specially when it come to Jack and Irina at the end of season 3. (I won’t even talk about season 5, it doesn’t exist beside for the cute scenes of granpa Jack and the line “You can beat death Arvin, but you can’t beat me")
So in season 2 Jack and Irina get reunited it take some time before he start to kinda trust her. Okay Panama happen, she betray him, but hey he saw it coming and wasn’t actually trusting her. Classic J/I
Then season 3 start. And boy if Lena Olin had been in this season instead of Katya, it would have been a dream. Yes, yes I said it. And I mean it.
So we learn that Jack and Irina worked together. Okay. But then later we learn that it wasn’t just for work? Because they literally said “I Miss you” to each other?!! Like I remember the first time I saw this scenes and how much I yelled. Because YES. YES. They still loved and miss each other after 20 years and so many betrayal.
Then the whole season 3 happen and literally everytime Jack talk about Irina, instead of being bitter or mean like in season 2 he said to Vaughn “We both suffered through the death of the woman we loved only to discover that she was still alive. I know, it's hard.” and like... I just can’t picture a world in previous season where Jack would have tenderly talk about Irina. So yes, it was to start drawing parallel between Vaughn and Jack. They both suffered the lost of the woman they loved. And then they both get betrayal by their wives.
Ok, ok, Vaughn was supposed to be young Jack or something. And to make sure that us, the viewers, we understand, Jack have to said nice things about Irina. Excepted that with the “I miss you” earlier in the season, it just add to the fact Jack is now over the whole marriage-for-KGB thing and have apparently started some kind of distant relationship with her.
When he need intels, he reach to her and he actually trust her. The man is like so over the fact she was a KGB agent who lied to him for 10 years.
The whole scene where he talk to Vaughn about his marriage to Irina. About how happy he was, but he still had doubt, but he was too blind and in love to see it? Okay it was to force Vaughn to open his eyes, but let’s be honest, in season 1 or 2 Jack would never have said that. Irina was a too sensitive subject. I mean, in season 1 when he tell Sydney that the way “Laura” and him met, how she fell in love etc etc was fake, he can barely said the word or look at her. And it was his daughter who actually needed to know about that. But he couldn’t talk because it still hurt to talk about how she never loved him (at this time that’s what he though remember) and also it was Sydney. But then let’s jump to season 3 and suddenly he can talk about Irina and their marriage freely? The man usually get a “I’m gonna kill you” face when someone talk to him about Irina Derevko but then he is like “Hey, wanna know about how happy I was when I was married to this KGB spy who killed you dad?”
And then freaking Sloane, you know his BEST FRIEND, tell everyone that he had an affair with Irina 25 years ago. And Jack my poor Jack... We can see his heart broke all over again. Okay another betrayal, he should be use to it. And because of that he’s ready to let Sloane die (the bastard deserved it anyway), because he slept with his wife. Maybe Saison 1!Jack wouldn’t have cared that much. Because at the time he still though that Irina was just a spy and that she didn’t loved him (and Sydney) and he also didn’t fall back in love with her.
Again season 3 is different. When he give the wine to Sloane, even if it’s part of his plan, his anger is real. Jack is hurt. And the way he talk about Irina and Sydney, how he said “what Irina and I, had”. Again, that’s not something season1 or even season 2!Jack would have said. The Jack from the previous season, would never EVER have said “we” when talking about Irina and him.
Their relationship also seem hard to understand for the others, since Sloane tell Jack that Irina doesn’t feel anything for him. He even moke him and his feelings for her (go f yourself Arvin seriously). But to be fair to Sloane I guess that if you only saw the J/I relationship from his POV, and by that I mean that for what we knows he had little to zero contact with Irina for 25 years. While he was still friends with Jack for 20 years. It would be hard to see feelings from her side. I mean it’s clear that in the short moment they worked together in season 2 she didn’t started to talk about how much she loved Jack. Saying she love her daughter is one thing, she know that Sloane wanting to act as Sydney’s father figure wouldn’t harm Sydney to hurt Irina. Saying she love Jack is another thing. He could totally kidnappe Jack or kill him just to hurt Irina. So again, given to little info he had about their true relationship, it was fair to assume Irina didn’t love Jack. We, the viewers know, but not Sloane. For once we know something he doesn’t haha. Bastard.
As for Sydney beside caring two sec about what her father feel when he learn about the affair, she doesn’t seem to actually care or know. But the writers seem to always keep her away from the J/I storyline. After the mission with the 3 of them in season 2 (and Sydney’s face when she saw her parents kiss xD), she is always busy and/or away when her parents are together. It’s like the writers don’t want her to know that yes, mommy and daddy made up. They’re probably having sex again. So even if she can have some ideas of what her father feel and what he’s going through, she probably doesn’t really know. She know they work together after season 2. She probably doesn't know they were actually together at the time.
I imagine Jack trying to tell her that, that would be even more awkward that the 'how to make babies' talk "You know Sydney, when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much, they... Forgive each other for the betrayals, lies, murder attempts and being a KGB spy for ten years and then they share a very special huge and a very special kiss" xD
Anyway back to how the writing is f**cked up
So until then Jack was in love with is (ex?)wife, then super hurt when he learn about the affair. So much that he decided to hurt Irina by sleeping with Katya (that was stupid, but well the writers were stupid at the time). But then the whole talk between him and Sydney about Vaughn and Lauren? How Vaughn need to kill his wife to heal? And how much himself regret that he didn’t kill Irina? IN WHAT WORLD? The same guy who wrote “I miss you”? The same guy who spend the whole season remind everyone that yes he was married to Irina (making a point to never call her Laura, unlike in season 2) and that he was super happy at the time, and in love with her? THAT GUY?
Then we learn that wow he did actually killed her (because of course we’re supposed to believe that what Sydney learn at the bank was about that yeah yeah yeah). He did killed Irina, but it wasn’t to heal himself, or for revenge or whatever, it was only for Sydney. And so the guy who said that he always regretted to not kill Irina, actually spend the season depressed because he actually killed her.
When he think that Sloane (HIM AGAIN) manipulated him to kill Irina and he confront him, Jack is broken. Like have we ever seen Jack so shaken up, excepted when Sydney was in danger ? I don't think so. When he said to Sloane to imagine what he must have felt when he killed the woman he once share a life with, Jack was shaking and showing real emotions. And when you know the guy it's something. Every character in the show said at least once how much Jack is cold and cynical. And he's saying that to Sloane. SLOANE. He's literally saying to Sloane "Can you imagine what I've felt when I had to kill the woman I love ?" and we can note that he still call Irina his WIFE. Not his ex-wife, not Irina, not Sydney's mother. His wife.
Because the only thing that made him accept what he did was the fact that it was to protect Sydney (like basically everything he does in his life). But when he learn that it wasn’t true, that Sydney wasn’t in danger and that he killed Irina over nothing this man, who according to the end of season 3 always wanted to kill Irina, is just broken. Like even Sydney, that the writers always write out of the J/I storyline, actually realize how hard it must be for Jack when he learn the true.
But again when she tell him I'm sorry it seem pretty cold, like Sydney can have so much empathy for everyone but apparently when it is about her parent's relationship, a rock have more empathy. (I could make a whole post about Sydney having no empathy when it come to Jack and his relationship with Irina)
But they learn that apparently Irina is alive, because no one is really dead in Alias excepted Danny, and when Jack learn that there is hope that she’s alive, he jump on it. Yes, hello, KGB wifey is alive, I’ve got another chance. Even Sydney said that he just can’t live with what he did. Of course he can’t. The man was manipulated to kill the woman he love, because he though that his daughter (the only person he love more than Irina, yes I said it) was in danger. And then all this was fake. Of course he can’t live with what he did. Specially since a fews episode ago he was having hallucination about his dead wife when they were together and happy. Just to remind him AGAIN, of what he lost. Of course he want to believe she’s alive because he can’t live with what he did. Thank you Sydney.
I know that she don’t wanna hope that her mother is alive, because she's affraid to be disapointed, but the fact she show zero empathy for Jack at this moment after all he’s been through is like... Seriously Sydney. >< Your dad is far from perfect but he was always there for you this last few years and he though he was protecting you so have some compassion.
Also from the Flashback of “Irina’s death” we can see that yes, J/I totally resume their physical relationship and they don’t fight over petty things anymore. They dance, kiss and apparently none of them think it’s not the way they usually act together (excepted when he... hum killed her). We can suppose that this is a glimpse of what they were doing when Sydney went missing. Also Jack, my man, she ‘broke’ your heart? That’s an understatement if I know one...
And when they found Irina, Jack actually said that there wasn’t a day where he didn’t regretted killing her. JACK YOU SAID THAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KILL HER. I’m not even mad at him, I’m mad at the writers. Irina actually apologies for the affair (but fuck all the people she killed, because fuck them xD).
(I’m not even gonna talk about how the witers started to hint that Nadia might be Jack’s daughter, but in the end totally dropped this idea).
And then they simply fall back to what they probably were between season 2 and 3. They work together, kill together, torture together. And when she’s sad or affraid, guess who’s there to tell her everything gonna be okay? It’s Jacky Man.
Like if season1!Jack and first part of season2!Jack have seen Irina cry because of a horse, he would have taken pictures and that would have been the best day ever for him. But noooo, not season4!Jack, who’s there for his (ex?)wife because she’s crying and he don’t like to see her sad.
(Seriously did they ever get a divorce at some point? Did they gave up because of the paperwork? Imagine being a lawyer trying to settle this. Between the fact they got married under a fake name, all the hidden assets they both have, she fake her own death, he killed her and all that... getting a divorces would be a mess. No, no staying married is for the best a this point).
Also the same Jack is literally making a jock about Irina being russian. Hum like hello, Jack. Jack my man, my dude, my spy, the fact she’s a russian spy was basically the PROBLEM. And now you’re like “haha russian imma right?". To wich she’s like “We like to control our own fate. You never put much faith in that, did you? Fate, destiny”. Remember last time that Irina started to talk about how she knew Jack? The toaster scene? They talked and laughted and then Jack had to leave because it hurt too much. But nooo, not this time. If it wasn’t for this stupid horse they would have keep talking and joking. Where is the man who said a season ago that he had many occasion to kill Irina, that he choose to let her go and regretted it? Where is he? I mean, okay it was after a whole year where he did killed her, so now he actually KNOW that he didn’t want to kill her. But still. WTF.
And he let her go. Is this one of this time where he regret not killing her? Seriously?
I guess not since we know in season 5 that he tried to contact her.
Anyway sorry for the long rant that was so weird and hard to read and that everyone is gonna ignore because it's so long and this fandom is dead now, but I had things to said xD
