#Arthur G Dozier School for Boys
Text
for one of my finals i'm writing a book review of the novel the nickel boys which is based on the real arthur g. dozier school for boys in florida which was in operation for over a hundred years and during its operation thousands of young men were beaten, tortured, raped, and sometimes murdered. some boys were sent there for actual crimes but often it was things like being found homeless or misbehaving in class. there were boys as young as 5 and as old as 20. there were many state led investigations during its operation and had a reputation for being extremely brutal but was not shut down until 2011 and many survivors of the school came forward in the early 2000s to get the school shut down. there are at least 81 known deaths at the school but many survivors and families believe there are much more unmarked graves at the school. also under florida state law bodies can't be exhumed without family permission but the school didn't keep good records of course. it's an incredibly horrific institution

Forensic anthropologist Erin Kimmerle investigates of the notorious Dozier Boys School--the true story behind the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Nickel Boys--and the contentious process to exhume the graves of the boys buried there in order to reunite them with their families. The Arthur G. Dozier Boys School was a well-guarded secret in Florida for over a century, until reports of cruelty, abuse, and "mysterious" deaths shut the institution down in 2011. Established in 1900, the juvenile reform school accepted children as young as six years of age for crimes as harmless as truancy or trespassing. The boys sent there, many of whom were Black, were subject to brutal abuse, routinely hired out to local farmers by the school's management as indentured labor, and died either at the school or attempting to escape its brutal conditions. In the wake of the school's shutdown, Erin Kimmerle, a leading forensic anthropologist, stepped in to locate the school's graveyard to determine the number

THE DEAD SPEAK
YES THEY DO! The thing is, we don’t always hear them because we’re not paying attention. AND sometimes we hear the message BUT it’s the messenger that we don’t want to hear from. AND SOMETIMES THAT MESSENGER FOLLOWS YOU HOME… February 2020 EVERY TRIP TO the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys has been eventful in some way, shape OR form. There’s always some knew find, whether it be an old dorm that…

That’s 27 more bodies of children found in addition to the ones already documented by the reform school buried in unmarked graves in a “clandestine” location.  Obviously, these were deaths that the school didn’t want anyone to know about.  Sadly, there likely will likely be no justice for the victims either.  It makes me sick to think that so many boys were buried in such a horrible place and no family ever came to claim them either.

The Dozier School for Boys, aka The Florida School for Boys, changed the complete direction of our books when we first visited there on this date a few years ago. We went for the ghost stories. We came back with dark history and tragic tales. We've interviewed ex-staff and survivors and we will never know the true scope of horror that went on there. #eerieflorida #eerietravels #ghost #history #historypress #dozier #florida #darkhistory #controversy #scandal #whitehouseboys (at Arthur G. Colson Whitehead is simply just brilliant! This is my second time reading a work of his and I was not disappointed. So much sadness within these pages but I felt like I walked away with closure after reading it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although a fiction novel, this story is inspired by the story of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida. Colson’s story follows the main character Elwood from his time landing at The Nickel Academy to his final days spent there. It’s truly a heart wrenching story. Things you’d never wish upon any adult, nevertheless a child. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Really appreciated the acknowledgments at the end as well which gave me some more material to further research this story. A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read from me. This is Colson’s 9th novel and I’m definitely going to be going back and reading some of his previous works. This book gave me chills and some things to really ponder on. Highly recommended. https://ift.tt/2M9gS7h

The Dozier School for Boys also known as the Florida School for Boys or Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Florida opened in year 1900 and closed in 2011. Today they are still digging the site of this former reform school and youth prison to find the bodies of some of the children who died by the hands of employees over a number of years. The exact number of victims is still unclear because keeping records were just not a thing back then.

ICYMI: Ex-UM Player Gets Kidney From Teammate, Miami Among Least Affordable in World and More
It's been another week of big news across South Florida, and NBC 6 has you covered with what you may have missed.
Former UM Football Player Gets Kidney From Teammate
A former Miami Hurricanes player is recovering a year after he received a kidney from an unexpected donor: his teammate from back in the day.
Gerard Daphnis was one of the many people who celebrated their one-year anniversary Wednesday in receiving their new organs thanks to the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.
"It’s great to see them a year later and how they're doing with their families and getting their life back," said Dr. Rodrigo Vianna of the Miami Transplant Institute. "It's a special day for our patients and a special day for us."
Daphnis and his donor, Jermaine Chambers, both came to the University of Miami in 1992 as freshman football players.
More Possible Graves Found at Shuttered Florida Reform School
A report says a company doing pollution cleanup at a shuttered Florida reform school may have found more graves of the nearly 100 boys estimated to have died there.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that Geosyntec told the Florida Department of Environmental Protection last month that a subcontractor using ground-penetrating radar found 27 so-called anomalies that could be unmarked graves near the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys.
University of South Florida researchers have previously documented 55 graves near the school, though they estimate nearly 100 boys died there between 1900 and 1973. Permanently closed since 2011, the school is near Marianna, some 60 miles west of Tallahassee.
Miami is 7th Least Affordable City in World: Report
A new report says Miami is the seventh least-affordable large metro area in the world.
The recent report by urban researchers Richard Florida and Steven Pedigo says the Miami region's housing unaffordability crisis reinforces its high levels of inequality.
"Miami has a very high end economy, attracting people from around the world. And an incredible influx of north easterners are streaming in here with high incomes," Florida said. "On the other hand, we have another economy, which is entirely filled with people who may not be working or working in very low skilled insecure jobs. And they’re sinking."
The report says only Hong Kong, Sydney, Los Angeles, London, Toronto and New York are more expensive than the Miami area.
Man With Autism Learns to Code at Miami-Based School
Victor Fitchhorn, who has autism, is learning how to code at Miami-based 4Geeks Academy, a coding bootcamp.
Victor is 20 years old and autism has made him a young man of few words. He's not good at expressing his feelings and he mostly answers questions with simple responses, but don't confuse that with a lack of intelligence.
"He taught himself to read at three years old, amazing," said Victor's mom, Carmen Borsani.
Women Spotted Naked at Rest Area, Lead FHP on Wild Chase
Three women were arrested after leading troopers on a chase north of Tampa – after initially being spotted naked at a rest area.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrived at the location in Wesley Chapel around 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to NBC affiliate WFLA-TV, after a custodian called and said he saw the woman putting on suntan lotion in the nude.
The women told troopers they had just showered and were “air drying” before jumping in their car and taking off, initially going the wrong way before turning northbound on I-75. FHP officials say troopers eventually caught up with the car at a gas station in Pasco County after receiving calls from other motorists.
