Alice Anne Graham-Montgomery, Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos and Countess Egerton of Tatton (1901). Sir Francis Bernard (Frank) Dicksee (English, 1853-1928). Oil on canvas. Tatton Park.
The portrait demonstrates Lady Alice’s elegance and poise but also her love of finery and, of course, her impeccable taste and affluence. She marks the place in the book that she had been reading. She is shown wearing a luxurious gold brocade dress which shimmers in the afternoon sunshine. She rests upon ermine robes and an intricately woven tapestry provides the backdrop. Lady Alice’s dress shows the under-dress with its plain bottom and Empire bodice and sleeves. She wears a black ribbon close to her heart, perhaps in remembrance of her first husband, the late Duke of Buckingham. Her hands face outwards, her long elegant fingers and pale skin the perfect backdrop for showing off her two rings. A diamond encrusted tiara and pearl necklace and earrings complete her look.
