Merriest Days Ahead (Part 1)
Read here on Ao3!
Febuwhump 2024 | Day 23 | Alternative Prompt 6: Immortality
Rated: G | Words: 3,343 | Summary: Pabu has a month long holiday honoring the cultures and traditions of its citizens…Omega wants to contribute.
AUTHOR’S NOTE:
This is within the same timeline as my other two stories “Scars & Toothpicks” & “Stay”. Probably takes place after both of these stories, but can absolutely be read as a stand alone!
OMEGA
Omega knows she has the best room in the entire house. While it is the smallest room, she prefers the term “cozy”. The ceiling is slanted so that she can only stand fully upright in half of it, but that just gives the room personality. The best part, the most amazing part, is the window. It is round with a bright pink, airy curtain that allows the sunlight to seep through. During the day, when she pushes it aside, she can see the ocean stretch to where it touches the sky in a nice, crisp line. When the sun sets, she can see it melt into the water, painting the sky and the sea with swatches of indescribable color. And when it is dark, the lights of the city sparkle like stars, winking up at her, reminding her that she and her brothers are not alone anymore. They have friends, people, community. The citizens of Pabu treat them like natborns. They aren’t clone soldiers here. They are the family that lives in the little house near the very top of the island.
And Omega loves it, and she knows her brothers do too…even if they don’t say it in words. She sees it in their actions, their smiles, their eyes. Clones were bred to survive, not live. But here they are, her brave brothers, living. She is so happy for them. For all of them.
Tonight, Omega fell asleep on the Marauder only an hour before they arrived back in Pabu after a supply run. She wakes a little when she feels the landing mechanisms activate, the pitched whine of the ship making a gentle descent on the landing pad. She scrunches her eyes shut, knowing that if she’s asleep, one of her brothers will carry her home.
Home. She loves that word.
“Omega?” Hunter’s voice, then his footsteps approach the seat Omega is curled in. Her brother chuckles, and Omega knows that Hunter knows she’s awake, but she keeps her eyes closed and tries to hide her smile in her arms.
“Just leave her,” Crosshair says. “If she wakes up with a crick in her neck, it's her own fault.”
Omega knows he doesn’t mean it.
“Tempting,” Hunter agrees softly, amusement evident.
“Then again,” Crosshair continues with a sigh, “hearing her whine about it tomorrow would make all of us suffer.”
Arms scoop her up and cradle her against the hard plastoid of a chestplate. The Batch doesn’t wear much of their armor anymore, but when they do, it’s under loose-fitting civvies to keep it hidden. Omega’s cheek rests against the coarse woolen material of Crosshair’s favorite sweater. Wrecker jokes that Crosshair likes the abrasive fabric because it matches his personality, but Omega knows it is because Crosshair likes the color: black with accents of red woven throughout.
Omega peeks up at her waspish brother’s face. He catches her. “If I find out you’re awake, you’re walking,” Crosshair murmurs. Omega snaps her eyes shut. “That’s what I thought.”
She must’ve fallen back asleep, because the next thing Omega is aware of is being deposited into her bed, Crosshair dropping her on the mattress with a soft thump. “Get ready for bed, you little womp rat.”
“I’m already asleep,” Omega whines, stretching out her arms. She accidentally knocks Lula off the bed.
Crosshair picks up the stuffed tooka and tosses it at Omega’s face. “Teeth brushed. Night clothes on,” he orders, pointing at her. “Then sleep.”
“Ugh!” Omega laments, but she rolls out of her bed with reluctant obedience.
Crosshair grins triumphantly around a toothpick before leaving the room, closing the door behind him.
Omega quickly changes into night clothes and then goes to the fresher to brush her teeth. She can hear her brothers talking in the common room, and the bitter scent of caff being brewed. Omega doesn’t know how they can stand the stuff. She tries it, but usually only with a healthy splash of cream and a heaping spoon of sugar. Even then, her brother’s laugh at the array of facial expressions she goes through as she sips at it with early meal.
Breakfast, Omega reminds herself, It’s called breakfast.
Once Omega has scrubbed her teeth clean, she bounds down the stairs with renewed energy. Her second wind, as Hunter calls it, disperses any tiredness she felt before.
“I thought you were already asleep,” Crosshair grumbles over his mug.
“I was until you made me change and brush my teeth,” Omega shoots back, climbing up on the couch between Hunter and Wrecker. There isn’t really enough room, but she makes herself fit, snugly squished between them. Wrecker laughs and moves his arm to the couch back to make more space.
“Forgive me for being responsible,” Crosshair says, rolling his eyes.
“Wanna taste of my caf?” Wrecker booms, “No cream or sugar, just like you like it.”
Omega scrunches her nose and sticks out her tongue. “Blech! Gross. I like Tech’s caff better.”
“Tech’s caff is ninety-five percent sugar,” Hunter says, hiding a smile behind his mug.
“Now wait a minute,” Tech starts indignantly.
“That’s why little girls like it,” Crosshair chortles gleefully.
Omega soaks in the lighthearted teasing, the warm feeling of safety and stability she hadn’t ever realized was missing until it was gifted to them on Pabu. It had been stolen for a moment when she was kidnapped by Hemlock, when she thought Tech was dead, and Crosshair imprisoned…but now, they have it back. And she never wants to let it go again.
Hunter nudges her, and Omega opens her eyes. She can’t remember when she closed them. “Off to bed, little one,” he says gently.
She nods, and wiggles her way off the couch. “G’night,” she mutters sleepily, waving vaguely, to no one in particular. A chorus of answering goodnights follow her up the staircase. Omega creeps into her little room and climbs into bed. She pushes aside her curtain to look out at the winking village lights. She gasps.
Amongst the usual street lamps and lit windows are thousands of colorful pinpricks of light, strung along the streets and around posts and rooftops. They look like luminous manifestations of pure joy, dazzling sparkles of happiness glittering across the place she didn’t think she could possibly love more.
“Hunter!” she calls, the first name she thinks of.
Omega has her nose pressed against the window pane Hunter comes in. “What is it? What’s wrong?” he asks. Maybe Omega had sounded a little frantic when she called for him in her excitement.
“Look! It’s beautiful!” Omega pulls away from the window enough for Hunter to lean over the bed and look out for himself. “What are those lights? What do they mean?”
Hunter smiles. “I forgot you didn’t see the lights when we were coming down from the ship. Tech said they’re decorative lights for the holidays.”
“What kind of holidays?” Omega asks.
“I’m not sure…we can ask tomorrow.” Hunter pulls back Omega’s quilt and pats her pillow. Omega looks out the window one more time before laying down and letting Hunter tuck the quilt around her shoulders. He smooths back her hair. “Don’t let that busy mind of yours keep you up,” he warns with a smile. “We’ll solve the mystery in the morning.”
“Yes, sir,” Omega sighs.
Hunter clicks off her lamp, whispering one last goodnight over his shoulder as he leaves the room.
Omega’s busy mind keeps her awake a few minutes more, noticing that the colorful lights cast a faint rainbow glow on the slanted ceiling. “Holidays,” Omega breathes dreamily, “I’ve never celebrated holidays before…” The lull of sleep claims her with wistful dreams.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
“They’re called Merry Days,” Lyana tells Omega the next morning. “It’s a whole month to honor all the most important holidays from all the cultures represented on Pabu.”
Omega breathes. “A whole month? What do you do for a whole month?”
“All sorts of things! We decorate and eat special food and play games. There are shows and parades, and remembrances. And on the middle day of the month, families exchange gifts with one another. We call that day Merriest Day, because the gift of family is the merriest of all.”
“I’ve never gotten anyone a gift before,” Omega says quietly.
Lyana lights up. “I can help you get gifts for your brothers! We could make them gifts, or even earn some credits to buy gifts from the market.”
“You would really help me do that?” Omega asks, hope swelling in her heart.
“Of course! You’re my friend. That’s what friends do,” Lyana says, as if it is the most obvious thing in the galaxy.
Omega smiles. “When can we start?”
“Right now, obviously.” Lyana laughs. “C’mon!”
Omega chases her friend out the door and into the sunshine of their island home.
TECH
“There’s going to be a parade of lights tonight,” Omega chatters excitedly, accepting the stack of plates from Tech to set around the table. “And the whole island is going to be there.”
Tech hums thoughtfully at the information. “It would be interesting to study the local traditions,” he says, giving Omega a handful of utensils when she bounds back to his side. He turns to the cuts of meat he is cooking on the stovetop.
“We wouldn’t be going to study, Tech,” Omega sighs. “We’d be going because it’s our tradition too! We are citizens of Pabu now, so we should celebrate with them!”
Tech goes still, Omega’s words, so assured, registering in his mind. “Well, I suppose…”
“Lyana asked what traditions clones have to add to Merry Days, and I told her I wasn’t sure, but that I’d ask you, since you know practically everything,” Omega continues fondly, going to the cupboard to collect cups.
“Traditions clones have,” Tech echoes, unsure he understands.
“Yeah,” Omega says, “You know…like other cultures have traditions and holidays. Lyana said they’re always adding new traditions to the month to incorporate all the cultures represented.”
“I’m not sure you would call our history a culture,” Tech counters gently. “Our…kind has only been in existence for an extraordinary short time. And as for traditions worthy of being called a holiday, I’m not sure that there are any by natborn standards.”
He turns to look at his sister in time to see her joyous expression crumble. She isn’t looking at him, but at the cup in her hand, half extended to its place at the table. “Oh,” she whispers. “That makes sense.” She sets the cup down with a soft clunk.
Tech’s voice catches in his throat as he searches for something remotely comforting to say, but his typically brilliant mind comes up short.
Omega looks up at him with a small, brave smile that doesn’t reach her eyes. “That’s okay. We can start new traditions. Our own traditions.” She nods, more to herself than to Tech. “I’ll go tell the others it’s almost time for late meal…I mean, dinner.” She rushes from the room, but there is no longer any bounce in her steps.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Omega’s mood improves considerably during late meal. Wrecker hounds her for information about the parade, as if she has any personal experience with it, and she gives him every minute detail she gleaned from Lyana. Even Hunter and Crosshair have a part to play in her lifted spirits, bickering lightly about where the best place to view the parade might be. Omega ultimately sides with Crosshair, to the sniper’s delight, the emotion only displayed in a triumphant smirk at Hunter and a gentle tug on a lock of Omega’s hair.
Once the meal is completed, Hunter sends Omega to make preparations for the evening activity while he offers to assist Tech cleaning up.
“It is not your turn,” Tech argues, unwilling to admit that he had hoped to take advantage of the opportunity to think uninterrupted.
Hunter shrugs, stacking plates and utensils. “I don’t mind.”
Tech minds, but he only nods and mutters a word of thanks.
“You’ve been quiet this evening,” Hunter says after a few minutes of silence between them, the only sound being the clatter of dishes and disturbance of water.
“I’ve been thinking,” Tech admits, handing Hunter a scrubbed dish to dry.
Hunter chuckles. “You usually think out loud.” This earns Hunter an eyeroll, which makes the former sergeant laugh outright and knock his shoulder into Tech’s. “Something’s bothering you.”
“Omega asked me about our culture, what we might contribute to the festivities of Pabu,” Tech says, taking another dirty plate to scrub at.
“Echo’s talked about some traditions the regs had,” Hunter says, the lightness of his tone vanished. “Maybe he’d have some ideas.”
“But we never participated in them,” Tech says, “and aside from that, it is troubling that Omega doesn’t have a history beyond the laboratories of Kamino. No clone does.”
“All histories and cultures have to start somewhere,” Hunter says.
This makes Tech pause. “This is true.”
“I suppose we have an opportunity to make our own culture, our own legacy,” Hunter continues. “Something for Omega to carry with her.”
After we’re gone remains unsaid.
“Omega said something similar,” Tech admits.
Hunter takes the stack of dried plates to put in the cupboard. “We can still ask Echo for ideas. I’m sure he would love to have input.”
“And Rex as well,” Tech adds, feeling lighter now that he has shared the burden. “I will contact them tonight. Hopefully we will have something to offer Omega as suggestions in the morning.”
Hunter shakes his head and smiles. “Tech, we don’t have our entire legacy figured out in one night.”
“But that would be ideal.”
CROSSHAIR
As soldiers, they have seen many celebrations on many worlds, but always in the capacity of disinterested observers. Watching for threats and protecting citizens made the distraction of festivities bothersome rather than engaging.
Now, Crosshair sees it all from a new perspective.
Omega is perched on Wrecker’s shoulders, high above the crowd. Crosshair doesn’t like the press of the horde on the streets, almost wishing he could find his own perch to observe the chaotic festivities from; however, his desire for open space does not win out over his yearning to be close to his little sister and brothers. So, instead, he situates himself between Wrecker’s bulk and Hunter’s solid presence. It also puts him within Omega’s reach, resulting in her tapping him on the head to draw his attention to anything and everything that catches her attention.
He pretends to be bothered, but Omega only giggles, seeing through his act as if it were a wide open window.
“Look, Crosshair!” she cries, a pat of little fingers in his hair. “Isn’t it cute!”
“We’re watching the same parade,” he tells her. “I see everything you see.”
“But are you looking at the little moonyo in the tree?”
“I saw it before you did.”
Omega huffs. “You did not.”
Crosshair smirks.
When the parade finally ends, Omega slides down from Wrecker’s shoulders and latches herself to Crosshair’s hand for the walk back home, even after he tells her she’ll have to keep up with his pace if she wants to stay there.
“That’s why I’m walking with you,” Omega tells him. “Hunter and Tech walk too slow.”
“That’s because it isn’t a race,” Tech says.
“You only say that because you wouldn’t win,” Crosshair replies.
“Yeah!” Wrecker declares. “I could beat all of you!”
Omega drops Crosshair’s hand. “Last one home has to do dishes for a week!” She takes off, followed quickly by a whooping Wrecker.
Crosshair exchanges a look with Tech and Hunter before he says, “Well, I’m not doing dishes for a week.”
“You don’t seriously mean…” Tech starts, but Crosshair is already gone, civilian boots pounding into the cobblestone streets.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
“I don’t think it’s fair that Hunter chose to participate in the race only after we had nearly reached the house,” Tech is still grousing when Crosshair returns to the common area from tucking Omega in for the night.
“You’re just upset you didn’t think of it first,” Hunter says smugly, taking a slow drink of his caf.
Tech continues to grumble from behind his data pad.
Crosshair goes to pour himself a cup of caf, adding just a touch of cream and sweetener. He would be loath to admit he used either, trying to keep the beverage deceptively dark. When he returns to the common room, he finds that the conversation has shifted from their evening race.
“Echo has already responded to my message,” Tech is saying to Hunter.
Wrecker poses the question before Crosshair can. “What message?”
“About clone traditions,” Tech says absently, still reading over the message in question.
“Clone traditions,” Crosshair mutters. “You mean, reg traditions.”
“It isn’t like we have any ourselves,” Tech says.
“Sure we do!” Wrecker cries. “We have traditions.”
“Such as?” Tech asks skeptically.
“Well, after a successful mission, Omega and I would get Mantell Mix,” Wrecker begins happily, but then he freezes, glancing at Crosshair.
In fact, Crosshair can feel three sets of eyes on him. He decidedly does not meet their gaze, focusing on the caf in his cup. This post mission Mantel Mix tradition was one established during his separation from the squad, when they ran jobs for the trandoshan that would later betray them to the Empire. They must’ve called them missions, their little mercenary gigs. While he knows their lives didn’t stop while he was gone, it doesn’t make the ache any less sharp.
Crosshair takes a drink of his caf, even though it is still too hot. “Well,” he says, “sounds like you’ve got a tradition right there.”
“Omega did mention that food does play a role in the month’s festivities,” Tech acknowledges, taking Crosshair’s words as permission to step away from the awkwardness of the conversation. “Perhaps we could borrow the concept of Mantell Mix and make our own rendition.”
Hunter makes a face. “Mantell Mix wasn’t even good.”
“Take that back!” cries Wrecker.
“Hunter has a point,” Tech says, ignoring Wrecker’s indignant gasp, “It was…subpar at best.”
“And that’s coming from the man who drinks caf with his milk and sugar,” Crosshair puts in helpfully, earning a guffaw from Wrecker.
Hunter interjects, bringing the derailed conversation back on course. “What did Echo have to say?”
“He mentioned name days, the day a clone received or chose their name. They would celebrate the day annually. Its natborn equivalent would probably be a birthday.”
“How are we supposed to remember when we chose our names?” Crosshair asks, rolling his eyes.
“I actually kept a record,” Tech admits. “I thought it was important.”
“Of course you did.”
Tech sighs. “I am adding it to the list of traditions we show to Omega in the morning. That gives us a grand total of two traditions we might contribute to Merry Days.”
“A nasty snack and the day a clone decides they don’t want to go by a CT number anymore?” Crosshair grumbles. “Do you think they’d give us a parade for those?”
Hunter frowns at him. “We are open to suggestions, Cross.”
Crosshair argues, “Why do we need to contribute any traditions? Can’t our tradition be that we adopt whatever traditions we want? Seems the month is full of them without us adding our petty creations.”
“Omega would be disappointed,” Tech says after a moment.
Crosshair sighs. “The truth is disappointing sometimes. And the truth here is, we’re clones. We were experiments and soldiers most of our lives…which wasn’t living. It was surviving.”
“But we still have our memories and experiences that have made us individuals, no matter what the Kaminoans hoped to achieve. We are more than just survivors,” Tech says.
“We have our history that made us,” Hunter says, softly, into his mug, “and now we have our history ahead of us. To do more than just survive.”
Tech chuckles. “I guess you were right afterall, Hunter. A legacy cannot be built in a night.”
“But it can be built in our lifetimes,” Hunter says.
TBC
I had to break this story into at least 2 parts…but the next part will come!!
This story was originally for the holidays, but I got in a car accident on Christmas Eve, so that put a damper on the plan 😅
But I finally get to post this bittersweet fluff!

Fallen London (and etc) worldbuilding headcanon: Neath Sign Language
I’ve rambled about this idea on discord before but i’m thinking about it again so i’ll rehash the deal here. l’m thinking abt disability in the setting of Fallen London and how cool sign languages are so i liked the idea of culture in the Neath having developed a distinct manual language.
my perspective comes from ASL classes (not fluent, it’s been years since then) and some independent background research on sign languages in general when i fixated on this topic so i can’t go in depth about the actual mechanics of the language because it is not even based on ASL and i am not up to the task of writing a manual conlang as cool as that would be. Also it’s hard to research what it might have in common with extant sign languages in our world because detailed records earlier than the 19th century are really rare, but also this is MY fantastical alternate history fixation and I get to chose the accessibility!!! so this is a preface that some headcanons i have may not have a whole lot of basis in the real world. it’s not *implausible* because deaf people have existed since forever and there have been Some forms of gestural communication since 5th century BC. in my version of history Deaf communities get to have more influence than they have irl
anyway I called it Neath (Neathian?) Tactile Sign Langage, or NTSL. The tactile bit is relevant because it was for the most part developed underground where there are few natural light sources. It’s versatile, the tactile and visual elements complement each other but aren’t both required to be understood. Like ASL and i assume most other sign languages it does have a reliance on facial cues to convey tone as vocal speech does on its own, but there’s probably an equivalent for solely tactile sign? I don’t have an immediate idea but I’m sure there would be some way of doing so.
NTSL predates Fallen London and actually any records of modern sign we know of. The main bulk of the language was derived from Fourth City citizens, though in the time it’s had to develop since the 13th century it’s very much become its own distinct language and does not resemble modern Mongolian Sign Language at all. NTSL cannot be understood by knowing another sign language as it’s not closely related to any and may have entirely distinct roots to the most common ones? Even the ones that have any relation it would be like assuming that because you know English you can understand something like Greenlandic Norse. Different ball game all together. Anyway since London’s fall there’s been a little bit of influence from British Sign Language but mostly just slang and a few other loanwords.
And speaking of BSL! London. If I remember right, Fallen London the city canonically is not a fan of languages that are not English (i’m certain i recall that being stated outright but i don’t remember which game or where). I think that extends even to BSL but it is used when ‘necessary’ and seen as preferable to other forms of sign. In the modern Neath, NTSL in London is associated with commoners and ‘foreigners’, the later usually being people from communities out in the Unterzee. Because NTSL sees a lot of use out there! In the Khanate and Tomb Colonies especially it is common as a second (or first!) language, and it’s useful enough for zailors that most pick it up and spread awareness and practice of the language. There are different regional dialects of the language. Multiple islands and continents, they’re bound to develop their own variations. Some are more cross compatible than others but the language barrier isn’t Too large, not enough to be separate languages
In the Sunless Skies timeline, NTSL also crosses the Avid Horizon! It has perhaps become even more common among independent skyfarers. On any crew you’re basically guaranteed to get several people with a conversational level of fluency, regardless of whether they’re deaf or hearing. The Reach leans more into visual NTSL as the light of the sun allows communication at a greater distance. Eleutheria *extensively* relies upon the tactile variant. Most of Albion still uses BSL

🦇 To Shape a Dragon's Breath Book Review 🦇
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
❝ "I don't believe that any of the changes that you or others seem to expect of me would be improvements," I said. "I don't think that there's anything wrong with the way I dress, or speak, or behave. My clothes are clean, and in good repair. I can make myself understood. I am honest, and I endeavor to be kind. I don't speak ill of others regarding things beyond their control, and I don't speak against anyone who hasn't given personal insult to me or my loved ones. I wouldn't consider a person to be my social inferior simply for being poor. ❞
❓ #QOTD What would you name your dragon? ❓ 🦇 After finding a dragon egg and bonding with the hatchling, fifteen-year-old Anequs becomes Nampeshiweisit—a person in a unique, unbreakable relationship with a dragon. Dragons were once common on the remote island Masquapaug, long before the Anglish conquered the land. Anequs and her dragon Kasaqua are forced to attend an Anglish dragon academy, where Anequs is expected to dress and behave like the Anglish who killed and conquered her people. Despite being treated like a second-class citizen, Anequs keeps her head held high to prove she's worthy of Kasaqua. If she can't pass her classes, Kasaqua will be put to death—and Anequs will unintentionally prove the Anglish right about their prejudice against her people. Can she defy the prejudice set against her?
💜 Moniquill Blackgoose shines a powerful light on important themes we can never allow society to ignore: equality (both in political and social power, between races and genders), agency, power, and consent. The entire story reads like an oral history, easily sweeping readers into the thrall. Anequs encounters extreme prejudice from teachers and classmates alike, yet still navigates both physical and emotional harassment with grace. This alternative history fantasy shows North America's occupation from an Indigenous perspective in ways no book has before. Despite the dark themes (including cultural genocide, indentured servitude, and child abuse, among others), Anequs is a delight. She's passionate, determined, and never falters in who she is—despite the number of Anglish people who want her to feel bad for remaining true to her history and heritage. Sending Anequs extra love for her bisexuality and interest in a poly relationship, both of which are normal among her people.
🦇 There is a HEAVY, seemingly unnecessary STEM-focus, namely through the combined geometry and chemistry necessary to shape a dragon's breath. While interesting, it's difficult to follow the logic that's given so much time and attention in this book. These explanations steal away from the story's real magic while adding hundreds of pages to the text, making some chapters lag. I also wish a glossary accompanied the novel, since there are a lot of foreign words and phrases readers will need to use context clues to unlock. If you pause reading long enough (or try to juggle reading multiple books at once), it's easy to forget what certain words mean. Some scenes drag, namely because of the necessary world-building. I'm eager to see if the second installment in this series flows better.
🦇 Recommended to anyone who loves alt-history fantasy fiction, dragons, amazing representation, and thorough world-building. Get ready for some serious escapism.
🐉 Fantasy Fiction 🐉 Queer MC 🐉 First in a Series 🐉 Indigenous Representation 🐉 Women of Color
🦇 Major thanks to the author and publisher for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley. 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

It had been days since everyone was transported back from the alternate Spirale—ready to, once again, prevent another apocalypse in order to secure their very own future. The battle had been long and seemingly dire at times. Yet as always, this island’s special citizens had managed to pull through once again despite the astronomically large odds being stacked against them.
The Stars had taken to the airwaves, notifying all of a white orb of light situated between the corrupted Ofiuco and the oozing black sun that would seemingly neutralize the two once a sufficient amount of energy was poured into it. Guess you could say the grand finale had finally arrived. And while all citizens who even had a remote semblance of power to back up the orb would give it their all—there was one man in particular who had decided to continue his work on the battleground in complete isolation.
This choice wasn’t deliberate by any means. The Boss knew for a fact that regardless of the strength he wields and his skills with both firearms and other forms of weaponry, compared to most who made residence in Spirale, he was practically ordinary. A mere human being who lived among those who were far more powerful than he could ever hope to imagine. People who were proficient in magic, or were gifted extraordinary powers in some way or another. Heroic Spirits and those who bordered on godhood.
You could say this was a somewhat humbling experience for him, and even he would agree that for a time it felt that way for him. But as the days passed and the increasing number of oddities he deal with grew more and more ridiculous, any sense of humility that The Boss may have felt had been entirely thrown out the window. By no means was he angry about the situation at all. How could he be? It is what it is after all; especially if one were to take into account a personal experience of his from back before any of this crazy shit happened.
If anything it drove him in a way. Made him want to spite anyone out there who would potentially underestimate him as most gang leaders have in the past. This desire to prove to anyone—though mostly himself—that he could still be a force to be reckoned with under the right circumstances is what prompted him to come out here on the battlefield in the first place.
He’s fully aware of how bad of a look it is to only come out here out of his own superficial desires. But things of that nature have never really bothered the man. He’s always known just how outright selfish he is. It’s been a staple of his life ever since he came into his own as a person once waking up from that coma. A selfishness that led him to such great heights that seem outright impossible for a man of his nature, let alone the street gang he ran, to be able to achieve.
But it’s in that selfishness itself that another facet of The Boss’s way of thinking emerges.
For as often as he’s talked smack about Spirale, the island it sits on, and the rest of the godforsaken branches, this was still his home. It was a home in which he’s met quite a number of people who he would never vocally refer to as a companion, let alone a friend, but secretly feel that way inside. A home in which he’s made quite the assortment of memories, both good and bad. A home where he surprisingly found himself the love of his life, and is now on the verge of getting married in just several weeks. For better or worse, Spirale had become his home for the foreseeable future.
So with all that said, it should come as no surprise that The Boss was quite pissed off over HIS home getting fucked with like this.
The past week had been spent in a seemingly never ending violent onslaught of smacking around these CPN jobbers and dodging any and all incoming attacks from those coked-up robots. It was agonizing, downright annoying as shit, but always rewarding whenever he managed to gain the upper hand. Yet none of that compared to the ooze. This disgusting muck that continuously spilled out across the streets like it came from some broken sewer line. Oh how much he despised it all.
It was one thing having to trek through this crap on foot as it had rendered his motorcycle almost useless—forcing The Boss to improvise a means to traverse the city till it, hopefully, vanished. But the fact it also came with some downright awful side effects was just rubbing salt in a wound that somehow kept getting worse and worse as the days dragged on.
But this man was a fool—a stubborn one at that. And fools like him tend to completely disregard any and all consequences of their actions—slamming right through whatever obstacle stood in their way like an oversized 18-wheeler that’s blasting through the streets on nitro.
He’s unsure if any of these brief walks through the ooze might have any lasting effects on him. If so, he honestly doesn’t give much of a damn. So what if he dies from prolonged exposure? It’s not like this would be his first rodeo. He isn’t afraid anymore. Death has only made him much worse of a person. Far more cocky than any man should be after that.
As stated much earlier, The Boss currently finds himself isolated from everyone else. Holed up in some empty building that was in close proximity to a rather large group of CPNs just shambling around what once was a fairly populated section of the city. He watches them like a predator lying in wait to strike at its prey—studying the surrounding area in order to form either a plan of attack or a means to escape depending on how things played out.
Tumblr media
“ Can’t exactly shoot my way through this. Ammo’s gonna dry up waaay before I even reach the next block over. Hmm. Could always call for backup—but who the hell is even free right now? Ugh. Life would be so much easier if those nerds just gave me a tank already. ”
Unfortunately not all life’s problems could be solved with the sudden appearance of an armored vehicle. So he stands there, going through every single little idea he could think up on the fly, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. Everything was worth a short one way or another. Though it’s in these precious few moments as he cycles through plan after plan like a mental viewfinder, one stray thought, one simple idea that seemed completely and utterly stupid in concept, happened to catch his attention.
Tumblr media
“ Oh my god. That’s it! I should’ve just done that in the first place. ”
Tumblr media
“ I’m gonna need some music for this. ”
For the time being he’ll simply leave his heavier firearms in this building till the coast was clear. No point in lugging those things around given what he’s about to do.
Slowly The Boss makes his way down towards the entrance of this building, noticing several CPNs standing in close proximity of the doors he had previously boarded up. A lack of patience finds him crashing through a nearby window instead of taking the time to clear up the entrance. This of course immediately grabs the attention of all CPNs around the area, though none of this concerns him as he’s already setting his plan into motion.
Instead of requesting the antivirus firearms the SDG wielded back in the alternate Spirale, he instead grants himself a pair of specialized gauntlets, fully intending to punch his way through the crowd because of fucking course he would.
Tumblr media
“ Hold up a minute! I still need t’ set the mood. ”
With his earbuds in place, and the looming threat of getting bit by one of these freaks drawing near, he hits play on the music app of his phone and lets the metaphorical curtains rise up to start the show.
Tonight
I’m gonna have myself a real good time
I feel ali—ive
A few jabs to each poor bastard’s cranium is what he starts off with. Not holding back even just the tiniest bit. Sure, he doesn’t intend to kill given what he knows of these fools. But that’s not gonna stop him from having fun with it.
And the wo—orld
I’ll turn it inside out, yeah
I’m floating around in ecstasy
So
Don’t—Stop—Me—Now
Don’t—Stop—Me
This is then followed up by throwing a CPN by the throat to a nearby group, which of course continues to attract more and more of them by the second.
Tumblr media
“ Ah! Like lambs to the slaughter. How cute. ”
Cause I’m having a good time!
Having a good time!
Right on cue, as if he purposefully timed the damn thing, he begins to quicken up the pace as the music starts to pick up. More jabs are thrown at the faces, or lack thereof, of each CPN that dares cross his path. Gut punches are thrown into the mix. Then some kicks. He keeps it simple for now until he feels the need to kick it up a notch. That inherent addiction to violence hasn’t bubbled to the surface just yet.
Oh how lucky the CPNs would feel if they could even realize such a thing.
As much as he’d love to stick around this part of town and refine his boxing skills, The Boss knows good and well what continued exposure to the ooze will do to him. Not to mention it’ll just end the show prematurely. So with nothing close in sight to use as a platform, he decides to do the next best thing; use the CPNs!
Now you’d be surprised at how nimble a man of his stature can be as he continues to vault himself over these schmucks in a glorified game of leapfrog. No mercy was given to anyone as he made sure to give them each a swift bash on the head before moving on to the next sucker.
Unfortunately some idiot grabs a hold of his leg and brings this to an end. Though in turn, it definitely makes The Boss super pissed off! Enough so that he winds up grabbing the CPN’s face and begins to repeatedly bash it with his fist before tossing them aside like a rag doll.
This is of course the point where things get much more violent.
Having decided that any side effects from the ooze didn’t mean shit to him so long as he got to demolish these assholes, The Boss begins his reign of terror on the masses, starting with some very aggressive in-your-face attacks taught to him by a certain man who looks like a glorified Christmas tree.
Tumblr media
“ I hope you NULL bastards are watching this from somewhere! I want each and every one of you t’ know what I’m gonna do when I get my hands on you pricks! ” Suplexes, clotheslines, chokeslams, any kind of wrestling move you could think of was being done on whoever decided to mistakenly put themselves on the oncoming path of this monster of a man.
“ Remember this you stupid fucks! Scorch it into your minds! Every time you so much as THINK about messing with this island, I want t’ be the first thing you picture. Let the violence I inflict on your stupid goons haunt you for the rest of your days, you no-good-stupid-motherfuckers! ”
Not a single person was exempt from this man’s fury. More and more bodies began to pile up as he continued knocking people down. Yet a white hot rage such as this would only get him so far. With his focus primarily on anyone right in his face, The Boss fails to notice the new batch of CPNs that have begun to gang up on him. Each one clawing away at his body viciously, leaving him just barely any room to defend himself.
“ Come on, man! You’re better than this! Focus. Breathe. Remember what the lovebirds taught you. Don’t let those lessons go to waste. Make ‘em proud! ”
His anger was like a weapon. When applied in the right manner, it could cause such an extraordinary amount of damage, whether it be on a single individual or an entire army. Julius knew this. Dex knew this. Even a guy like Ben King knew this as well. But it was Ragna who really opened his eyes on how to channel that into something greater. Something much more powerful. Terrifying. And despite not going into personal details with her, it was Tsubaki who showed him how to utilize such a thing even further.
While his upper body was in the midst of getting torn to shreds, somehow his legs had been completely ignored. Pure luck? Yeah, probably. But he was gonna sure as hell take advantage of it!
Like some extremely violent Rockette who decided to go ballistic one day, he unleashes a flurry of kicks towards any CPN who gets way too close for comfort. This is then followed up by more blows to the head with his gauntlets, though he keeps himself in a stance where he’s able to quickfire another kick or two if so need be.
His continued barrage of violence is somehow able to create a path through the dense crowd—using a mix of grapples and long sweeping kicks to dispose of everyone who stood in his way. It was during this moment that something had begun to click with him. Perhaps the adrenaline had finally started to get to him. Or maybe he’s taken one too many hits to the head. But as a smile crept upon his face, and the sound of pure joyful laughter came from deep inside, it finally started to dawn on him; was he enjoying himself?
God knows how long it’s been since he last felt this way. It’s almost like he wasn’t even allowed such a thing to begin with. At least from his point of view. Completely deprived of one of the key components that made him who he was. Such a terrible, awful, disgusting thing to care that much about in the first place. Most would see him as nothing more than an outright monster for that. But none of it mattered to him. He knew what he was deep inside. Always has ever since he woke up.
So it’s why despite how close he is to reaching his goal, despite the looming threat of being either overwhelmed by the CPNs or swallowed whole by the ooze that lined the streets—completely disregarding his own personal health or even what others might think of him if they so much as glanced over to this grisly display of violence (at least there’s no blood!)—he continues to fight off every single bastard NULL throws at him.
Why?
Because for once in a very very long time, he finally feels like his old self.
He’s happy.

Gains of Private Owner Vacation Rentals in Naples, North Naples, Marco Island, Pelican Bay, and Bonita Springs, FL
Taking that long-awaited vacation can fill one with delight. Sadly, booking hotel rooms for the entire family can be enormously expensive. Moreover, the food will cost a bomb, and assorted activities will add to the costs. One of the best alternatives for eager travelers is to consider staying at premiere vacation home rentals in Naples, North Naples, Marco Island, Pelican Bay, and Bonita Springs, FL. Such accommodation can indeed be a home away from home. With all the amenities and a kitchen, one can cook healthy meals and enjoy the days with the family and beloved pets.
Unfortunately, booking a vacation home based on promotional features will be foolhardy. Moving into a home in a remote picturesque locale will be pleasurable only when the accommodation and its amenities meet the users' approval without being too pricey. It is essential to conduct some research to find out the best homes located at the destination selected for a holiday or tour. The things that need to be ensured include the following:-
· Prioritizing- It is essential to get the priorities right. Therefore, one must be convinced about the requirements before booking the rental. While properties located a bit away from the tourist spots may be a trifle cheaper, vacationers who want to live on the mountain or right by the beach must be prepared to pay for the privilege.
· Timing- Tourist spots have a season and an off-season. Moreover, many citizens drive down to a remote area just to catch a live sporting event. One must try to book the rental as early as possible when being here on a specific day is essential. Otherwise, a family may opt for the off-season to enjoy the attractions in a relaxed manner without hurrying unduly.
· Features & Amenities- The demand for vacation rentals is at an all-time high right now. Instead of remaining focused on availability, one must also insist on the basic facilities and features. There have been incidents of renters finding a different home instead of one that resembles the images showcased on the website. It is vital to authenticate the property instead of being too earnest about getting a good deal. Checking out the reviews and referrals can be the right way to be ensured about a vacation rental and its quality.
· The Owner- One must research the owner and the home in question. An owner who reveals facts about life and work will likely be honest. Learning about their long connection with the local community is another reason to rent a home from them. However, an individual who is reticent and reclusive may be hiding something. It is best to forget about renting a home from such persons.
· Maintenance- Renting a standalone property is a strict no-no unless it is a part of an association or group in the community. Guests may encounter electrical faults or flaws with the plumbing or garden when using the home. An association will have service providers on call to address the issues.
The notion of staying in private owner vacation rentals in Naples, North Naples, Marco Island, Pelican Bay, and Bonita Springs, FL, is becoming exceedingly popular as compared to standard hotels.

Kenneth Haskin | Urban Oasis- Green Initiatives and Sustainable Practices in City Management
Our urban landscapes, initially perceived as concrete jungles, are evolving. Thanks to a new trend of incorporating urban oases—small spaces of greenery that elevate city aesthetics and boost sustainability efforts, cities across the globe are transforming into vibrant ecosystems. This article, focusing on the city management practices that drive this transformation, will introduce the recent appointment of Kenneth Haskin, an experienced city administrator, and his impact in shaping sustainable urban environments.
Cities, traditionally viewed as centers of industrialization and commerce, are now recognizing the importance of integrating nature into their fabric. One of the key initiatives gaining traction is the development of green roofs. These living roofs, adorned with vegetation, serve a dual purpose. Firstly, they act as natural insulation, reducing the need for excessive air conditioning in buildings. Secondly, they absorb rainwater, mitigating the impact of urban runoff on drainage systems. As a result, green roofs contribute to energy efficiency and water management, creating a more sustainable urban environment.
Urban planners and architects are also reimagining public spaces, infusing them with green elements that go beyond traditional parks. The concept of 'pocket parks' or 'parklets' is gaining popularity, as these small, green spaces are strategically placed throughout the city. These mini oases not only provide citizens with areas for relaxation but also promote biodiversity by offering habitats for various plant and animal species. In addition, they contribute to the reduction of the urban heat island effect, mitigating rising temperatures in densely populated areas.
In the realm of green urban management, one of the most crucial aspects is the implementation of sustainable transportation systems. Many cities worldwide are pouring resources into the development of comprehensive public transportation networks, which include a range of options such as buses, trains, and popular bike-sharing programs. These investments aim to provide viable alternatives to the reliance on private car use, a factor contributing significantly to citywide carbon emissions and relentless traffic congestion. By promoting these eco-friendly modes of transport, cities are taking a solid step towards reducing their environmental footprint. The efforts don't end there; many city administrators, like Kenneth Haskin, are championing the development of pedestrian-centric zones and pushing for the expansion of bike lanes. This shift towards active transportation not only fosters a healthier lifestyle among city dwellers but also promotes a higher degree of environmental consciousness. Kenneth Haskin's leadership in these initiatives is a testament to his commitment to creating sustainable urban spaces.
Waste management is a pressing issue in urban areas, and innovative solutions are emerging to address this challenge. Cities are increasingly adopting recycling programs, waste-to-energy technologies, and composting initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of waste disposal. Furthermore, some cities are implementing 'zero-waste' goals, striving to eliminate the concept of waste entirely by promoting the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. These initiatives not only contribute to environmental conservation but also position cities as leaders in sustainable waste management practices.
In the realm of urban architecture, sustainable building practices are reshaping skylines. The construction of eco-friendly buildings, equipped with energy-efficient systems and renewable energy sources, is becoming a standard in modern urban development. Green building certifications, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), are driving the construction industry toward more sustainable practices. These structures not only reduce the carbon footprint of cities but also set a precedent for future developments, inspiring a shift towards environmentally conscious urban design. Kenny Haskin City Manager
Water conservation is a critical component of sustainable urban management, especially in regions facing water scarcity. Cities are implementing measures such as rainwater harvesting and water recycling to ensure efficient water use. Green infrastructure, such as permeable pavements and green alleys, helps reduce stormwater runoff, preventing pollutants from entering water bodies. By prioritizing water conservation efforts, cities are not only addressing immediate challenges but also preparing for a future where water resources may become increasingly scarce. Kenny Haskin City Manager
Citizen participation is instrumental for the successful implementation of eco-friendly initiatives. City administrations across the globe are encouraging public investment in environmental protection measures by offering programs, workshops, and educational campaigns at the community level. This active involvement instills a sense of accountability and promotes environmental stewardship among residents, cultivating a sustainable mindset that transcends city limits. Kenneth Haskin's leadership in Cape Girardeau emphasizes the importance of this grassroots approach to the enduring success of urban sustainability endeavors.
In the quest for urban sustainability, cities are also exploring the concept of 'vertical forests.' These innovative architectural marvels integrate greenery into high-rise buildings, transforming them into vertical ecosystems. Not only do these structures contribute to air purification and biodiversity, but they also represent a harmonious coexistence of nature and urban living. Vertical forests serve as a beacon of inspiration for future urban developments, encouraging a balance between technological advancement and ecological preservation.
The synergy between technology and sustainability is evident in the emergence of 'smart cities.' These cities leverage data and technology to optimize resource use, enhance efficiency, and improve overall quality of life. Smart grids, efficient waste management systems, and intelligent transportation networks are just a few examples of how technology is being harnessed to create more sustainable urban environments. The integration of smart technologies positions cities at the forefront of innovation while addressing pressing environmental challenges.
The transformation of concrete jungles into verdant urban oases is a clear indication of the shift in city management priorities. Sustainability is no longer considered a choice but an urgent necessity for the health of city inhabitants and the planet. As cities continue to adopt these green initiatives, they are not just improving their resilience to environmental challenges but also paving the way for a future where urban lifestyle and ecological balance can thrive together. This evolution towards a sustainable urban management approach is a continual progression, and as cities transform, so will the ingenious solutions that mould tomorrow's urban landscapes. The influence of leaders like Kenneth Haskin in this journey is instrumental in shaping a sustainable future.

1, 5 and 7 for the reading meme?
What are 2-5 already published fiction books you think you want to read in 2023?
I don't really read that much fiction, which I'm hoping to rectify. The last fiction I remembered reading was a Quaker rom com (yes, really).
But here's a list:
Romola by George Eliot - One of George Eliot’s most ambitious and imaginative novels, Romola is set in Renaissance Florence during the turbulent years following the expulsion of the powerful Medici family during which the zealous religious reformer Savonarola rose to control the city. At its heart is Romola, the devoted daughter of a blind scholar, married to the clever but ultimately treacherous Tito whose duplicity in both love and politics threatens to destroy everything she values, and she must break away to find her own path in life. Described by Eliot as ‘written with my best blood’, the story of Romola’s intellectual and spiritual awakening is a compelling portrayal of a Utopian heroine, played out against a turbulent historical backdrop.
The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson - Decades into our future, a stone’s throw from the ancient city of Shanghai, a brilliant nanotechnologist named John Percival Hackworth has just broken the rigorous moral code of his tribe, the powerful neo-Victorians. He's made an illicit copy of a state-of-the-art interactive device called A Young Ladys Illustrated Primer  Commissioned by an eccentric duke for his grandchild, stolen for Hackworth's own daughter, the Primer’s purpose is to educate and raise a girl capable of thinking for herself. It performs its function superbly. Unfortunately for Hackworth, his smuggled copy has fallen into the wrong hands.
Nation by Terry Pratchett - Written loosely in a third-person perspective, the novel is set in an alternative history of our world, shortly after Charles Darwin has published On the Origin of Species.[5] A recent Russian influenza pandemic has just killed the British king and his next 137 heirs. Except for the opening chapter, the novel's action entirely occurs in the Great Southern Pelagic Ocean (the fictionalised South Pacific Ocean) on a particular island known by its indigenous inhabitants as "the Nation".
The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson - The Ministry for the Future is a climate fiction ("cli-fi") novel by American science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson published in 2020. Set in the near future, the novel follows a subsidiary body, established under the Paris Agreement, whose mission is to act as an advocate for the world's future generations of citizens as if their rights are as valid as the present generation's. While they pursue various ambitious projects, the effects of climate change are determined to be the most consequential. The plot primarily follows Mary Murphy, the head of the titular Ministry for the Future, and Frank May, an American aid worker traumatized by experiencing a deadly heat wave in India. Many chapters are devoted to other (mostly anonymous) characters' accounts of future events, as well as their ideas about ecology, economics, and other subjects.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō by Hitoshi Ashinano - Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō is set in a peaceful, post-cataclysmic world where mankind is in decline after an environmental disaster. Exactly what happened is never explained, but sea levels have risen significantly, inundating coastal cities such as Yokohama, Mount Fuji erupted in living memory, and climate change has occurred. With the seasons being less pronounced, the winters are milder and the summer isn't scorching anymore. The reduced human population has reverted to a simpler life, and the reader is told this is the twilight of the human age. One scene depicts an anti-aircraft missile being used in a firework display. Instead of raging against their fate, humans have quietly accepted it.[5][6] Alpha Hatsuseno is an android ("robot person") who runs an out-of-the-way coffee shop, Café Alpha, on the lonely coast of the Miura Peninsula of Japan, while her human "owner" is on a trip of indefinite length.[7] Though she spends much of her time alone, Alpha is cheerful, gregarious, and—unlike the slowly declining humans—immortal.[6] Most chapters of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō are self-contained slice-of-life episodes depicting Alpha in daily activities, either alone, with customers, or on occasional trips through the countryside or into Yokohama for supplies (whence the "shopping log" of the title came). Whole chapters are devoted to brewing coffee, taking photographs, or repairing a tiny model aircraft engine, sometimes with only a few lines of dialogue. Through Alpha's experiences, the author brings out the small wonders of everyday life and makes the reader aware of their passing: the aircraft engine runs out of fuel; her scooter breaks down; the rising ocean encroaches on her coffee shop; the neighborhood children she loves grow up and move away. In evoking a nostalgia for this loss, Ashinano follows the Japanese tradition of mono no aware (sadness for the transience of things).[8]

Shitty fanfic idea, but araeph’s posts made me think of an alternate ATLA timeline where Sozin doesn’t do explicit colonialism, but cultural, trade based imperialism:
*Instead of invading islands and port towns to establish trade posts, Sozin ends up allying with feudal Earth Kings against The Earth Monarch of his time, by giving them mutually beneficial trade deals, weakining central government’s power, and pushing Earth Kings to independence.
*Instead of committing genocide against the Air Nomads, Sozin uses old treaties with Air Nomads to reestablish them as tributaries to their respective nations, ensuring the next Avatar will not have the freedom the previous recent ones had, and Western Air Templars will be under his command to find the Avatar.
*Since Sozin doesn’t need a strong military now, he can instead spends the Fire Nation’s power to industralize itself and its allied Earth Kingdom Provinces, and establish strong trade routes. This creates “short of war” tensions that only boil into full-blown war in the latter half of Azulon’s time.
*Internal colonization attempts we seen in LoK’s timeline happens instead in Azulon’s timeline. Northern Water Tribe invades Southern Water Tribe (and taxes Southern Air Temple) to protect itself from Fire Nation’s permanent trade blockade, Earth Kingdom expands Dai Li to the entire continent, going full CIA-FBI, to occasionally assasinate disloyal feudal Kings, outer islands of Fire Nation became like less developed outer islands of Japan/Indonesia, with Sun Warriors becoming tourist attractions like Native Americans.
*Rest, I presume mostly go similar to according to the actual canon, but with different contexts. With Siege of Ba Sing Se being not of an explicit attempt of colonization by Fire Nation, but rather Fire Nation intervining in an Earth Kingdom Civil War for their preferred feudal Kings, Hakoda’s family not only fighting Fire Nation’s thinly disguised raiding armies, but going insurrectionary against North’s occupation, Aang being accepted to Southern Water Tribe not because of Sokka and Katana, but because he is effectively a citizen of the Water Tribe now, and Toph’s family actively benefiting from Fire Nation’s neocolonialism, by working with Ukano’s family and new colonizers to put in an Earth King that would be puppet of the Fire Nation.
