My August Island Batik Challenge
This month, the Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to make a miniature quilt.
When I heard the challenge, I knew I wanted to make a smaller version of one of my quilt designs. But which one?
After thinking about it, I knew that I wanted to make a miniature of my Broken Roads pattern and so I did!
To make Broken Roads Mini, I used a 2-1/2” strip pack from the Catching Dreams collection. It’s a beautiful collection but an older one. If you google it however you might still find a shop that carries it.
Now technically speaking, a miniature quilt isn’t just a small quilt. No, a miniature is a version of a larger quilt that’s been reduced in size proportionately. The blocks in my mini version of Broken Roads are just a smidge smaller than the original ones and the perfect size for using 2-1/2” strips.
Here’s the original version of Broken Road, made for the April 2018 Island Batik Ambassador challenge, Looking Back, Vintage Quilts Inspiring New Creations. You can read more about that here.
Often after creating a challenge quilt, I develop it into a pattern, typically for a collection debuting at Quilt Market. Here’s a version I made for the Spring 2019 Quilt Market that features the Petal Pushers collection. You can read more about it here.
As you can see, Broken Road uses a lot of HSTs. To make them, I used my new laser. Boy do I love it! Really saves time when making HSTs two at a time because you don’t have to mark the diagonal line.
I can attest to its accuracy. These HSTs are super small and the result with the laser was super accurate.
When sewing miniatures, it helps to press your seams open so there’s less bulk. I used my wool capper and my new wool pressing mat from Prairie Spirit Alpaca to achieve perfect results.
I wanted the beautiful fabrics in the Catching Dreams collection and my Broken Roads design to take center stage so I kept the quilting simple—echo quilting within the stars and swirls in and out of the diagonal triangle sashing.
As usual, I used my Schmetz Microtex Chrome needles to piece and quilt Broken Roads Mini. I love them so much when working with batiks which can dull ordinary needles.
I chose Boysenberry for the backing and created the binding by sewing together scraps from the left over 2-1/2” strips. I love using Boysenberry! It’s so wonderfully purple and I’m a purple gal for sure.
I used Hobbs Thermore batting for my quilt. Thermore is ultra thin and the perfect batt for wall hangings because it doesn’t pull at it the quilt with it’s weight. I also felt that a thin batt wouldn’t overwhelm the small piecing in my miniature. I think it performed beautifully.
Here are the quilt details:
"Broken Roads Mini" 24” x 24” Original Design, Based on Broken Roads Background: Light fabrics from the Catching Dreams collection Foreground: Dark fabrics from the Catching Dreams collection Binding: Dark fabrics from the Catching Dreams collection Backing: Boysenberry (Basics collection) Batting: Hobbs Thermore batting Piecing Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2024 (White) Quilting Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2510 (Light Lilac) Binding Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2545 (Medium Purple) Needle: Schmetz Microtex Chrome 80/12 Pieced and quilted by Jennifer Fulton
I had such fun taking my mini out into the urban landscape to take photos. Here’s a few more.

It’s time for some quilt posting!
I visited my family in Alberta last week and was determined to spend some quality time not sweating my ass about my inbox. (Being on satellite internet helped a lot.) And come hell or high water I was going to finish something.
Tumblr media
I set out to finish handquilting the giant beast I have— thinking I would just post up on the back porch and stare at the ground squirrels while working— but that was not in the cards. Because my mother has been learning to quilt as well.
You see, my mom has been learning quilting in fits and starts over the years. A table runner here, a rag quilt there, but not really a focused effort beyond making someone a gift or destashing the mountain of polar fleece she has on hand from making us kids clothes in the nineties and early aughts.
It wasn’t until my severely burnt out and depressed self came home for Christmas this past year and asked her to teach me to quilt that she also decided to learn conventional piecing quilting. She wasn’t able to teach me, but she shared her craftsy login with me and we stared down a bunch of YouTube videos together. She also drove me through the icy Alberta freeze to the quilt shop in Canmore and gave me two sizeable lengths of fabric she’d taken in from my Oma to bind and back the Frankie and Momo quilt I made in January.
Since then, she’s been motoring along on quilting projects and gifts at the rate that could only be maintained by a retiree determined to destash her, my grandmother and my oma’s lifetimes of built up fabrics. My mom, also being one of the rare people in this world with an honest-to-god pension, learns any new hobby by buying gadgets and toys for the hobby.
This is all to say: My mom has an accuquilt. This is a little crank power fabric die-cutting machine that is very very cool. And after using it to zoom through the cutting for a little sawtooth star block I got it in my head that I could probably do a simple start-to-finish quilt while I was visiting. (I wanted to play with the toy more)
Tumblr media
(Yes I know that this is very silly and wiggly, but I was testing things and goofing around so be nice)
So it was off to that Canmore quilt shop again, in much nicer weather. And I dug out some coordinating colours from their sale section for blocks, backing and binding for less than thirty bucks. I then fed all the twoonie priced fat quarters through the diecutter and wound up with more than sixty charm squares in about half an hour.
Tumblr media
That’s pretty fast— all my cutting at home happens on a coffee table and wrecks my back. She’s also got one of those fancy Stripology rulers so I was able to cut my entire binding in literal seconds. It’s witchcraft.
Put together a simple repeating layout and we were off to the races!
Tumblr media
My mother also has a fancy new sewing machine with a start-stop button, thread cutter and more feed dogs than god. So I was able to zip through assembly WAY faster than on my ancient hand-me-down brother machine from the eighties. (Who I still love)
Tumblr media
The whole quilt top was together before I knew it, and I’m getting less and less clumsy with my corners every time I do this so I was really happy. Used a Hera marker to make guides for the quilting, which surprised me by how well it held up to handling. I can probably recreate the effect with a clean butter knife at home!
Quilted the whole thing in rush and sewed the binding on in the car on our way to and from dinner. I somehow managed to not get carsick doing it too, it’s astounding. Im really happy with the results even though it’s a very simple design. This is the fastest I’ve done a whole little blanket like this and I’m glad I got so lucky with the sale fabrics available.
(Lucy also gave her approval once we got home yesterday, even though she wasn’t there to supervise.)

Tessellation Triforce - Lap Quilt
Tumblr media
Main Fabric: Flutter Tone-on-Tone (Remnants)
Filler Fabric: Emma Louise European Linen
Backing Fabric: Big W Plush Blanket
Special Tools: AccuQuilt Baby Go
I made an executive decision to re-post some stuff from Insta based on if my image was created in Canva 🤣 (I only moved to it recently, after I changed phones and could no longer access my Adobe Express designs)
I made this for my husband's nephew because it was winter and cos he is super into Tears of the Kingdom. Although to be honest, I've had this quilt idea for probably 7 years or so (as long as this Tumblr account lol).
Despite having the design idea, I never acted on it because I originally bought an equilateral triangle quilt ruler to help me cut the triangles, but then realised I would probably stuff up the cuts, and felt disheartened 😅 This quilt was a big reason why I ended up buying an AccuQuilt Baby Go (the other being hexxies 🥰)
But even after getting the AccuQuilt Baby Go, I didn't become confident enough to attempt this project until I figured out scant 1/4 seams 😅 And then I had to rejig the design cos I thought I didn't have enough fabric. But I ended up with a lot leftover still, my math when it comes to crafting SUCKS.
A little detail that no one but me will appreciate is that these fabric scraps are from the Pokemon cushion covers (now also a quilt) that I made for my husband as a first Christmas present. The two of them are quite similar so it just felt fitting 😊

I think I just got a Steal of a Deal! I just found this Brand New, in the Box, Accuquilt Go! Baby, Carrying Case and a bunch of Dies at a local Thrift Store. (there were more dies but I only bought 4, however now I think I will need to go back and buy more!)
The Accuquilt Go! Baby and Carrying Bag were only $79.00
4 - Dies for $58 (1 at $13 and 3 at $15 ea)
No Matts so I will have to order those.
With Tax I paid $152 for everything.
Thought I would look up what I would have paid if I had purchased these online.
Machine & Carrying Bag - I Can't find New, not even on the Accuquilt website. However, the Accuquilt Go! Me (basically identical to the Baby) is $170 on Amazon and on Sale on the Accuquilt website for $150 (comes with 1 small mat and 2 basic dies but no carrying case) Note: the mat won't fit the dies I bought.
On Ebay Used machines were between $89 - $125 and between $35 - $70 for shipping. (a couple had the carrying case, none came with dies)
Thus, I assume I saved between $70 - $100 on the machine + I got a free carrying case that still had the plastic on it.
The Dies New were between $40 - $120 each. I wasn't able to find the exact ones I purchased to get an exact price but I found similar ones.
I estimated I saved about $145 on the dies.
If I had purchased all these New I would have spent about $412 with tax and shipping, thus overall I saved about $260!!

My July Island Batik Challenge
The Island Batik Ambassador challenge for July was to bring an early Christmas to someone in need of comfort. Quilts are just the thing to bring someone comfort, don’t you agree?
The other part of the challenge this month was to design a quilt of comfort using the BOB (Block on Board) die we received in our July boxes. We each received the Tree of Life die. We could use the die to cut all or part of the Tree of Life block for use in our design.
I love the Tree of Life block and always wanted to make a quilt using it, so my first thought was to use the entire block. To meet the challenge of breaking it apart, I used the half square triangle unit on the die to cut extra HSTs to scatter through the sashings between the blocks and in the borders, like leaves falling down.
I call my design Time Passages because it reminds me that time passes all too quickly and we should make the most of the time we have. I chose different colors for each of the tress to remind me that the changing seasons are a natural part of life and not to fear but instead embrace each season.
Next, I considered who needed comfort. Unfortunately, I know quite a few people in that category, but one person kept coming to mind as I sewed my quilt together. I haven’t had an opportunity to give the quilt to her yet but I will soon and I hope it brings her the comfort and love she needs right now.
I cut out Time Passages quickly, using my AccuQuilt Go cutter. With the BOB dies, you can cut out all the parts for a block in one pass through the cutter. Since you can layer up to 6 layers of fabric on the die, you can cut out six blocks with one pass!
When you’re making a scrappy quilt like mine it takes a bit more planning and sometimes you cut only one fabric at a time, but still up to six layers so it goes fast anyway.
Another thing I love about using AccuQuilt to cut out a quilt is the notched shapes. For example, notice the corners on the half-square triangle below. The notches help you align the pieces precisely, making sewing up a block as complex as a Tree of Life so easy!
Those notches were really helpful when I made the trunk section of the Tree of Life block. I shudder at the idea of piecing that section without them! Look how easily those notches made piecing this rather complicated block unit!
Notice also that I didn’t waste any time putting my new Prairie Spirit Alpaca pressing mat to work! Made quick work of pressing this unit completely flat.
To quilt my piece, I quilted the “branches” of the trees.
I free-motion quilted leaves in the border and sashing in order to emphasize what the falling triangles represent (leaves).
While placing the HST leaves in the sashing, I deliberately arranged a Friendship Star in the center of the quilt where the sashings meet. To me it reminds me that this quilt was given in friendship.
I used a light green for the back, and white solid for the binding. I added a special label for my secret recipient. I can’t wait to give her this quilt! She’s a dear friend and I hope this gift comforts her.
Here are the quilt details:
