Abarth SE 030, 1974. When Fiat began development of a mid-engine sports car they commissioned proposals from Bertone and Pininfarina. The smaller Bertone X1/9 was selected for production while Pininfarina’s bigger X1/8 was seen as a possible replacement for the Abarth 124 Spider in the WRC. The X1/8 was reconfigured as the X1/20 with a competition version taking precedence, to enter the Giro d’Italia endurance race. Abarth configured the race cars with a 3.5 litre version of the 60° Dino V6 from the Fiat 130. Two cars were built; chassis numbers 300 and 301. The Abarth came second in the Giro, behind a works Lancia Stratos Turbo. The SE 030 never raced again but the production version arrived in 1975 as the Lancia Montecarlo. The Abarth 124 was replaced by the 131 as Fiat’s rally weapon.
