The fifth generation (5G) of mobile communications networks is emerging as a revolutionary technology that will accelerate the development of smart cities and the realization of the information society. In this video, we're going to take a look at 5G and beyond the future of mobile connectivity. Let's deep dive into the video and learn more about the different types of mobile connectivity.
In recent years, the rapid evolution of mobile connectivity has transformed the way we live, work, and communicate. At the forefront of this technological revolution is the development and deployment of 5G networks, which are poised to redefine the possibilities of mobile communication and pave the way for a future that goes beyond our current understanding of connectivity.
5G, the fifth generation of mobile networks, represents a significant leap forward from its predecessor, 4G. While 4G enabled faster data speeds and improved network reliability, 5G takes this a step further by introducing unprecedented levels of speed, responsiveness, and capacity. It promises to deliver data rates that are up to 100 times faster than 4G, virtually eliminating latency, and accommodating a much larger number of connected devices simultaneously.
One of the key features of 5G is its use of higher frequency bands, including millimeter waves, which provide broader bandwidths for data transmission. This allows for the support of massive data traffic, which is particularly important in an era dominated by data-hungry applications like streaming 4K and 8K videos, virtual reality, augmented reality, and the Internet of Things. The ability of 5G to handle this increased demand for data without compromising on speed or quality is a game-changer for industries ranging from entertainment and healthcare to transportation and manufacturing.
Beyond speed and capacity, 5G also brings forth the concept of ultra-low latency or the time it takes for data to travel between devices and networks. With latency reduced to mere milliseconds, 5G opens doors to applications that were previously unattainable. For instance, remote surgery could become a reality, as surgeons could perform procedures on patients located continents away with real-time precision. Similarly, autonomous vehicles can communicate instantaneously with each other and with traffic infrastructure, significantly enhancing road safety and traffic management.
However, the evolution of mobile connectivity doesn't stop at 5G. Researchers, engineers, and innovators are already envisioning what lies beyond the capabilities of this groundbreaking technology. The concept of "Beyond 5G" or "6G" is emerging as the next frontier in mobile communication. While still in its early stages, 6G aims to push the boundaries of connectivity even further.

Advantages and disadvantages of 5G
Tumblr media
5G technology or fifth generation technology offers many features for mobile networks. It is useful for government, students, businesses and professionals. It is a new mobile network designed to connect everyone and everything. It is the new standard in global wireless networks after 1G to 4G. It offers high multi-Gbps data speeds, low latency, large network capacity, and a flexible user experience. As this new technology is deployed, 5G technology should create many new applications.
5G technology features in brief. Speed up to 10 Gbits.
Great app
100 times more device connections
Fast response time
Waste of time
Another software option to upgrade. Great potential
With the proliferation of digital around the world, when live streaming and games, sports, news, movie reviews, social media, etc., the transfer of large amounts of data from one host to another and the Internet of Things (IoT) spurred the development of mobile phone standards. .
However, the 5G technology network has not yet reached its potential because the existing devices and infrastructure are not yet ready to support the 5G technology network. Those who have tested the 5G technology network using it with built-in 4G devices in this application are also called non-stationary 5G technology networks. The full potential of 5G technology will only be realized when independent networks, compatible devices and better communication tower technologies become available.
Advantages of 5G technology
Transfer data faster
The previous generation 4G LTE technology used bands below 3 GHz but in comparison, 5G technology uses bandwidth from 6 GHz in length to 24 GHz. However, it is important to note that 5G technology coverage also requires a base station and a broadcast tower compared to a 4G data network.
Improved network
5G networks are more flexible as they work with different customers, services and market segments. It divides its network in such a way that it will adapt to the needs of the users. It is based on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). It is also called a "network fragment". This provides high data rates, low power consumption, and reliable low latency.
Moving Beamforming
Moving Beamforming refers to a radio signal processing technique that allows for the transmission or reception of a directional network, unlike a passive antenna that beams the signal randomly in all directions. 4G networks also use beamforming to some capacity, but in a growing sense.
Benefits for companies and businesses
It provides improved machine-to-machine communication for automation, real-time communication and guaranteed network availability, digitization of healthcare and agricultural industries.
Benefits for consumers
It provides fast download and download times when you are streaming users. Stable connection to mobile communications, low response time for online or cloud gaming, virtual reality, high quality live TV and 4K video telephony.
A more secure network
5G technology networks offer more security than previous generation networks. It supports protection against data loss, data corruption and theft. The exchange of sensitive and private customer data, such as hospital patient reports, customer data and student information at universities, is more secure in the 5G technology network.
Disadvantages of 5G
Limit coverage
The 5G technology network is a new technology, it requires a large network of ports and transmission towers worldwide, which requires a lot of time, testing, testing and setting up 5G technology towers.
Reduces durability
If the experts are to be believed, the non-standard 5G technology network undermines the performance of 4G network devices. Although a few manufacturers have started to produce 5G technology network devices, R & D believes that due to high data transmission in the largest network, the longevity or service life of mobile phones and other devices will be compromised.
Involvement in aviation
In January, Air India cancled several flights to the United States because they were rolling out 5G technology services in the country. This is a major setback of 5G technology in India as airlines have suffered losses due to ongoing 5G technology deployment projects. It can also be a hindrance in the future if not dealt with quickly. Internet Security Threats
Although the 5G technology network is said to help improve cybersecurity, it also has its limitations as it encourages cloud computing and exposes more data to risk. of hacking due to its lack of privacy and ease of access to network networks. on the other hand. hands
5G technologyin India
India officially launched its 5G technology network in October this year at an event held in New Delhi. Airtel and Jio have started rolling out 5G technology data plans in select state. However, Vodafone Idea is not planning to launch it in the near future.
In case of Airtel, they are currently placed in Tier I to Tier 8 countries. Jio has launched 5G technology services in limited areas. Many telecom operators are also of the opinion that pan-India 5G technology network coverage will take a few years. Jio recently announced after the 5G technology beta test that no SIM card is required to operate Jio's 5G technology network. However, Vodafone Idea has not yet announced its 5G technology network.
The health risks of 5G technology and the disadvantages of 5G technology for the environment
The International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has stated that increasing radio frequencies above 6 GHz may have biological and health effects. The 5G technology network will increase the amount of electromagnetic radiation in the environment, causing a greater risk of cancer. With the lack of power of 5G technology network devices, there will also be an increase in the collection of electronic waste. The electric current from the cell tower exposed sparrows and other birds to increased egg production and nesting behavior. High rates of energy consumption have also contributed to global warming.

From smart cities to smart cars, to smart factories, the future will be built on ubiquitous microchips connected by wireless networks. Fifth generation (5G) technology promises to bring the high-speed, low-latency wireless infrastructure necessary for the “smart” era. By some estimates, half of all worldwide data traffic over the next five years will be generated not by people, but by connected computerized devices requiring no human intervention.
Moving from promise to reality, however, will require those connecting networks to be secure. A new Brookings report examines the 5G promise, its cybersecurity challenges, and the policy decisions necessary to achieve the 5G promise. The report concludes that as China and Europe push forward with their 5G efforts, a domestic American emphasis on network security will both speed up 5G adoption and create a differentiated advantage for U.S. companies at home and abroad. Accomplishing such outcomes can be achieved through the implementation of well-known cybersecurity techniques, a program of federal oversight that eschews regulatory micromanagement in favor of a light-but-frequent review of 5G cyber risk mitigation activities, and appropriate government funding.

Deutsche Telekom Stock Review
Deutsche Telekom is a Germany-based company that provides integrated telecommunication services. It operates through five segments: Germany, United States, Europe, Systems Solutions, and Group Development. The Germany segment provides fixed-network and mobile telecommunications services to consumers and business customers. The United States segment provides telecommunications services in the United States market; and the Europe segment offers fixed-network and mobile operations of the national companies in Greece, Romania, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, and Austria.
IPO
A major turning point in the world of telecommunications took place in November 1996, when Deutsche Telekom went public. It was the largest IPO in history and the capstone of years of intense effort by Goldman Sachs to establish a presence in the German market.
The company's offering marked a significant step in the development of an Anglo-Saxon shareholder culture. It was also the first telecommunications company to be listed on the Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges, as well as the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
It was the largest ever IPO and it was oversubscribed five times. Shares traded at nearly 20 percent above the issue price on their first day of trading.
In addition to its traditional services in Germany, the company provides telecommunications services throughout the rest of Europe and the United States. Its businesses include fixed network and broadband, mobile telephony, and information technology services.
Today, the company is one of the world's leading telecommunications companies with operations in more than 50 countries and a broad range of products and services. It has a worldwide network of around 248 million wireless and 26 million wireline customers.
The company has been in the forefront of telecommunications innovation, investing extensively in digital technologies to develop innovative new products and services for its customers. Examples include the Internet of Things, 5G technology, video conferencing, and artificial intelligence.
For a company like Deutsche Telekom, it is important to have a diverse product portfolio that appeals to different kinds of users. The company is also known for acquiring and selling companies to generate growth and streamline operations.
Despite its success, the company has faced several challenges in the past few years. It has lost customers to larger rivals, including AT&T and Verizon Communications Inc VZ.N, and it has also experienced a drop in revenue and profits.
However, the company's management has made efforts to turn its fortunes around, launching new business models and making strategic acquisitions. It is a leader in the telecommunications industry and it continues to seek ways to grow its business and create value for shareholders.
Mergers and Acquisitions
Deutsche Telekom is a diversified telecommunications company with a strong position in Europe and a booming US business. It operates in a number of different sectors, such as payments and commercial real estate tech.
In the US, the company is primarily focused on mobile services. Its subsidiary T-Mobile USA has an excellent record of growth and is a significant competitor to AT&T and Verizon. In addition, it owns Sprint (NYSE:S), which is set to become a major player in the U.S. telecom industry once the merger is complete in 2019.
The company has not made many major acquisitions, but it has done a few small ones over time. These smaller deals, such as the purchase of a Romanian carrier, the sale of T-Mobile Netherlands and its acquisition of Austria’s Telecom Austria, have improved its market position and scale.
Its US telco operations, T-Mobile USA and T-Mobile International, have been growing at very strong rates. These companies have a large customer base and are expected to continue expanding.
T-Mobile US is the second largest wireless service provider in the United States with a customer base of 120 million, behind Verizon. It has a very competitive pricing model and a great reputation in the industry.
However, the stock has not performed well in recent months. This is largely due to the fact that many investors are not aware of the fact that the German government owns 57 percent of the company. It has been criticized by a few legislators who think that the government should reduce its holding before the deal can be completed.
As a result, the stock has been down with other European stocks. If the Euro continues to weaken, this would likely help the stock and also its U.S. assets, which have been irrationally punished by European investors because they are included in a European stock.
To counter this, the company has been increasing its dividend and repurchasing some of its own shares, which are now trading at about a 50% discount to their value. These dividend increases and the repurchases should allow for further growth.
Shareholders
One of the largest shareholders in deutsche telekom stock is the German government and its agency, Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KfW). KfW owns 17.3 percent of the company's shares. It has been buying more shares and reducing its stake in a series of transactions.
Another large shareholder is the United States investment group Blackstone. It purchased 4.5 percent of deutsche telekom stock for $3.3 billion. It is hoping that the purchase will help the company achieve its long-term financial goals and boost shareholder value, according to the company's announcement.
It also plans to use the money to fund future dividend increases. The dividends are a key part of the company's plan to reinvest in new technologies and networks.
The company also recently rolled out an overhaul of its corporate strategy to focus on digitalization and adapting its business models to the changing needs of customers. The changes will make it a software company that sells telecommunication services, rather than just a hardware manufacturer.
This is a big shift from the days when telecommunications networks were made up of monolithic blocks of network elements. Today, companies like DT are disaggregating their technology and moving it into the cloud. This allows them to connect with third-party networks and use their infrastructure to provide telecommunications services.
In the case of telecommunications, this involves billing-software and other backend systems. These backend systems are responsible for collecting and analyzing customer data to make pricing decisions.
If these systems are not able to comply with GDPR, will they be subjected to enforcement action or sanctions by U.S., EU, or German authorities? If not, will they be the target of new private actions for fraud and/or breach of contract?
To protect its data, deutsche telekom stock has "binding corporate rules" that it has promised to abide by. These rules are "binding" on all of the company's subsidiaries and any of its other companies that can be required to comply with them or have already adopted them on a voluntary basis.
But what if deutsche telekom stock's subsidiary T-Mobile USA doesn't subscribe to these "binding" corporate privacy rules? Does it still have to comply with the "binding" rules, or is there something in the corporate law that prevents it from doing so?
Dividends
One of the coolest perks of being a shareholder of this German company is the opportunity to participate in its annual dividend payout. The company pays out an impressively large sum each year, and it has a long and distinguished history of making its shareholders happy. Despite its size, the company manages to stay on top of its game thanks to some innovative corporate strategies and a healthy dose of luck. In a nutshell, there's a reason why this stock has been a KfW staple for so long. The company is also one of the few surviving German telecoms. If you're on the hunt for a good value telecommunications stock, deutsche telekom should be at the top of your list. You'll be rewarded with top-notch service and competitive paycheques, not to mention a hefty chunk of the local economy.
After all, it's not every day that you get a free piece of the country's largest phone company, let alone one of the most innovative and coveted German telecommunications companies in the business.

May 20 (UPI) -- Canada announced that it is prohibiting products and services made by China's Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE from use on its 5G cellular networks.
"Our government will always ensure the long-term safety and security of Canadians by taking all actions necessary to safeguard our critical telecommunications infrastructure," Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said Thursday in a statement that was posted on Twitter.
He said that the decision "follows a thorough review by our independent security agencies and in consultations with our closest allies. As a result, telecommunications companies that operate in Canada would no longer be permitted to make use of designated equipment or services provided by Huawei and ZTE. "
The minister added that companies that already use such equipment in their networks "would be required to cease its use and remove it."
Firms that already have technology from Huawei or ZTE installed will have until the end of 2027 to remove it, according to a report from Bloomberg.
The action by Canada drew a response from Huawei.
"We're disappointed but not surprised. We're surprised it took the government so long to make a decision," Huawei spokesman Alykhan Velshi said, according to a report in The Guardian. "We see this as a political decision, one born of political pressure primarily from the United States."
Thursday's decision by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government came eight months after a Canadian diplomat and entrepreneur accused of spying were set free to return home from China after nearly three years in prison.
Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor were hit with espionage charges just two days after Canada said it was proceeding with a hearing to extradite Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, to the United States. In that case, the U.S. accused the Huawei executive of selling technology equipment to Iran.
In August 2020, the Commerce Department under former President Donald Trump, expanded restrictions on Huawei after alleging the company was a surveillance arm of the Chinese Communist Party.
Huawei, founded in 1987, is a leading global provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices. according to its website. The company says it has approximately 195,000 employees and operates in over 170 countries and regions.
Its first contract with a Canadian company came in 2008.

Design innovation of a sports venue
An example of design innovation of a sports venue is Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. The stadium construction began in October 2002 after a stadium build referendum was held in Bavaria that a majority 65% of people voted in favour of (Allianz Arena, 2024). Completed in April of 2005, Allianz Arena initially had joint ownership with FC Bayern Munich and TSV Munich 1860 having a 50% ownership share each. The state-of-the-art stadium build cost $340 million euros and was designed by Swiss Architects Herzog and de Meuron together with the support of Alpine Bau and Hypo-Verinsbank (HVB). Kucukvar et al. (2021) state design innovation is now allowing venues such as the modular shipping container stadium to be built, dismantled, relocated and reused. A feature of the stadium is the exterior cladding that is made up of 2874 translucent diamond metal panels of ETFE (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer) (Rethinking The Future, 2022).
Tumblr media
These panels can be illuminated in red, white or blue. Red and blue for Munich’s two biggest football teams FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich and white for the German national team. Allianz Arena is an example of Parametric Architecture with panels that fit together geometrically and help make the stadium visually appealing during the day and at night with Allianz Arena standing out in Munich. Bianconi et al. (2020) explain that the rapid evolution of visual optimization in stadium design has brought two Italian architects’ and mathematicians’ vision of Parametric Architecture to reality over recent decades.
Tumblr media
Another feature of Allianz Arena is the roof membranes are 1/30th of the weight of glass while being self-cleansing and ventilated. These features are made from suitable materials and their properties make maintenance and cleaning easier. Allianz Arena has an impressive capacity of 75,024 seats and can accommodate 13,342 in standing areas. Functionality is included with the design of Allianz Arena having a press club area for the media with 350 seats. It also has hospitality aspects covered with 6000m2 of catering facilities that include a bistro that can accommodate 400 people, along with a fan restaurant at either end of the stadium that holds 1000 people each.
In mid-2024 Germany hosts the 17th UEFA European Championship, EURO 2024, with Allianz Arena hosting a handful of games including the opener (Okello, 2024). Allianz Arena has recently undergone renovations in preparation for the event with the latest 5G mobile technology installed allowing blanket coverage in and around the stadium. Reassuringly, it now boasts an improved hinge mechanism, providing a smoother folding experience that feels more natural and sturdy. It’s complemented by a water-resistant rating of IPX8, making the phone more resilient to the elements.
The exterior of the device features a 6.2-inch AMOLED cover screen, providing a compact smartphone experience for quick interactions. On unfolding, the Z Fold 4 5G reveals a 7.6-inch AMOLED main screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering an immersive tablet-like experience. The bezels have been reduced and the under-display camera technology provides an unobtrusive screen layout, making for an improved viewing experience.
Performance and Battery Life
Equipped with a powerful Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chipset and 12GB of RAM, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 5G excels in performance, handling everyday tasks with ease and running demanding applications without hiccups. Despite its powerful internals, the device manages to maintain an impressive battery life, thanks to its 4,500mAh battery.
Samsung’s One UI 4, based on Android 12, offers seamless transitions between the cover screen and the main display. It also provides a host of multitasking options, such as Flex mode, which splits the main screen in half for simultaneous app usage. With the improved multi-window mode, users can run up to three apps at the same time. This was seamless and stutter free in our testing.
Cameras
The Z Fold 4 5G sports a triple-camera system on its rear, consisting of a 12MP ultra-wide, a 12MP wide-angle, and a 12MP telephoto lens, providing versatility for a variety of shooting scenarios. The main 12MP wide-angle camera produces sharp, detailed photos in a range of lighting conditions, with reliable autofocus and image stabilization. The 12MP ultra-wide lens captures a broader field of view, while the 12MP telephoto lens offers 3x optical zoom for distant subjects.
The under-display 4MP front camera, though not the highest resolution, produces decent if underwhelming selfies. However, the cover screen’s 10MP front-facing camera provides better quality for those seeking higher-resolution selfies and video calls.

One of the standout extras of the Z Fold 4 5G is the S Pen Fold Edition, which Samsung says provides a seamless stylus experience for note taking, drawing, and more. The S Pen Pro, a separate accessory, adds even more functionality, including remote control capabilities.
Alas, our review device did not come with either, but from what we’ve heard from those who’ve used these extras, it enhances the device’s multitasking capabilities significantly. However, Samsung hasn’t provided a slot in the Z Fold 4 to store a stylus, unlike its non-folding Galaxy S22 and S23 Ultra devices.
Our verdict
Samsung has refined the foldable smartphone experience with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 5G, showcasing a stunning design, top-tier performance, and a plethora of advanced features. Its improved hinge mechanism and water-resistant build make it more durable, while the seamless integration of software and hardware facilitates a versatile user experience.
The triple-camera system offers versatility and excellent photo quality, even though the under-display front camera may not be the best choice for selfie enthusiasts. The inclusion of the S Pen Fold Edition and AKG-tuned stereo speakers further enhance the device’s functionality and appeal.
However, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 5G’s steep price point means it’s not for everyone. It’s best suited for those who want a cutting-edge, high-performance device that can provide both a smartphone and a tablet experience in one package. For anyone willing to make the pretty hefty investment required, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 5G is a remarkable piece of technology that showcases the future of mobile devices.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 5G is available on contract from R3 073,00/pm or for a cash price of R32 999.

I really wish Robert from Aging Wheels did a review of the e.Go Life. You never heard of Aging Wheels? He does Youtube videos about weird cars.
youtube
You never heard about the e.Go Life? It's this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A small electric car built by a start-up company in Aachen, Germany, where I live. These pictures were taken at their factory, actually. The company recently filed for its second bankruptcy, and literally nobody believes that they'll ever make cars again. It's closely related to Streetscooter, a company that built electric vans for the German postal service, but that's a whole other story.
The e.Go Life is right within the Aging Wheelhouse. Now, I strongly believe that this video will never happen. For one, I don't think anyone's ever been stupid enough to bring one of those to the US, and I think it's honestly not that interesting compared to the even smaller home-built things he usually (for some definition of "usually") he reviews. They built a four-digit number of them, after all (around 1350), so it's almost mainstream.
Small City Car
In a wider sense I think it's interesting to talk about the idea of the small electric city car. For decades now, people have been telling us that we should buy small electric city cars; cars that can cover 90-95% of our driving, and rent cars or (in Europe) take the train for longer distances. And this has never worked out, people just don't buy these cars. Why is that?
Well, first reason is because they all cost way too much, obviously. They cost too much because they're built in low numbers, and with low numbers of sales there isn't the money to get the degree of production scale and automation necessary to get the price down.
e.Go (and Streetscooter) claimed to solve that issue with their special production method, and in fact both projects were born out of the production systems chair at the local RWTH Aachen University. Certainly some impressive stuff. They had their own local 5G network in the factory for network-enabled torque wrenches, which they were very proud of.
History
Perhaps a good time to mention the history and relationships here: Streetscooter was originally set up to build a small electric city car. Here's a prototype in 2013.
Tumblr media
Then they also designed a small electric delivery van. Then the German Post/DHL wanted small electric delivery vans, and unlike, say, the stupid stuff the USPS is doing, they actually did something about it, bought Streetscooter, and turned it into a real company. I think they built about 15,000 so far, most for the German Post but also some for third parties. Then the German Post got new management which found that the economics were not as rosy as they thought, they tried to sell the company, the new owner declared bankruptcy, right now the professor who founded this is back in charge, and I have no idea whether any production is actually happening anymore.
Tumblr media
e.Go was then set up by the people that founded Streetscooter to build a small electric city car, seemingly going back to the original vision (although the specific story of how they came to the e.Go Life in its modern form is a bit convoluted as well. Apparently JIRA boards were involved). Both companies were founded in and produced in Aachen, Streetscooter at the old Talbot train factory (unrelated to any car company ever named Talbot), e.Go in a newly built factory. They're also both unified by being based around new innovative production methods that allow you to build cars, even in small runs, more efficiently and cheaply than the big manufacturers with all their steel presses and what have you.
Except not. Neither e.Go nor the much more successful Streetscooter ever managed to build as many vehicles per year as planned, and the prices were also by no means exceptionally low. The promise of better production methods just couldn't be kept. The professor who started it all keeps complaining about how German government and German post aren't doing enough to support small new promising car manufacturers, but there have been people arguing that he knew what the conditions were, his promises were just too bold. Impossible for me to say from the outside, but that doesn't sound all wrong.
So, production costs are an issue, and e.Go didn't solve it. But I think that hits at most 50% of the issue.
City Car is an oxymoron
I think there's not actually a market for a city car, and you can reach that conclusion from multiple directions.
The first is that cars don't actually make much sense in the city, and making the car smaller doesn't change that a lot. Mercedes used to talk big about their Smart car, but the reality is that the best Mercedes for city driving is the biggest and most expensive one:
Tumblr media
You have no issue with parking spaces because it doesn't need to park, it just leaves when you're done with it, and when you need it again, it appears within fifteen minutes or so. You don't need to pay attention to traffic, a professional paid driver will do that for you. The one in this picture is even electric.
Our cities are full with cars, and it's making everyone miserable, including the people who drive cars. They are constantly complaining that there aren't enough roads and parking spaces and too many traffic lights everywhere. Say what you will about the e.Go Life, but at the end of the day, it's still a car. Maybe it takes up 60% of the size of a normal car, and it fits in the special extra-short parking spaces in some of Aachen's absolutely bizarre parking garages, but at the end of the day, still a car. Together with safety margins, it takes up maybe one or two meters less road, big whoop. You definitely won't fit two of these into one parking space. Its advantage over a regular car is, at best, cheap and electric.
So if you don't particularly like cars, this one won't change your mind. Bus, bike, e-bike, cargo bike, scooter and who knows, maybe even a tram in the future, are all solutions that are much cheaper and in many ways more useful for getting around the city.
On the other hand, if you do like cars and do like driving into city centres, this offers basically no advantages over a normal full-size car. The only thing you can say is that by being small, it offers electric at a reasonable price, but as we saw, that's very debatable.
The 90% car
The standard statement about a small electric city car has always been that it does 90% of what you need a car to do, or more precisely, more than 90% of all car trips, and surely you can make do with that. And I think that's true, to an extent: Many people could make do. They just don't want to.
The folks who still believe in the idea that a car is freedom are not interested in a 90% car, because the extra 10% are arguably when a car is at its most useful. Being able to drive to my parents 500 kilometres away right now with no planning, no seat reservation, only stopping for fuel, is useful. For me personally, that's way more useful than using it to go shopping or to work, both things where I can do very well without it.
The folks who don't buy into car ideology and are open to more efficient and ecological options for local travel, well, they already have these options in the form of public transit, e-Bikes and so on.
The "city car" is really only an option for people who depend on a car for every-day travel because there are no good public transit options, but who have other options for the few cases where they need to do something interesting. The ideal place for such a car is as a third or fourth car for a family living in suburbia. As every fellow train and urbanism enthusiast knows, that's not actually something we should encourage, as a society, even though we keep doing it. That aside, perhaps a suburban car for that market could make money, if it was sold at a low price, but nobody's managing that. A normal-sized car that gives you the option of long-distance travel if you need it just seems more appealing if both cost the same.
And of course nowadays we have electric cars that have reasonable long-distance ranges. The era of the small electric city car was over before it even started. e.Go never had a chance and on the whole, it won't be missed. The solution to our problem isn't more cars, not even relatively small ones.

Vodafone / Three deal could leave consumers and businesses worse off
Tumblr media
Vodafone UK (which is owned by Vodafone Group Plc) and Three UK (which is owned by CK Hutchison Holdings Limited) are two major providers of mobile telecommunication services in the UK. Last year both businesses announced a new joint venture agreement which would bring their 27 million customers under a new, single network provider. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched its initial Phase 1 investigation in January after it was notified by Vodafone UK and Three UK. This 40 working day review is designed to identify whether the deal may lead to a ‘substantial lessening of competition’ – focusing on the potential impact on consumers and businesses in the UK – and therefore requires an in-depth, phase 2 investigation. Phase 2 investigations allow an independent panel of experts to probe in more depth initial concerns identified at Phase 1. The CMA is concerned the deal, which combines 2 of the 4 mobile network operators in the UK, could lead to mobile customers facing higher prices and reduced quality. The CMA’s Phase 1 investigation found that Vodafone UK and Three UK provide important alternatives for mobile customers. Both have made significant investments in their networks in recent years – which includes the rollout of 5G. Three UK is also generally the cheapest of the four mobile network operators. The CMA is concerned that combining these two businesses will reduce rivalry between mobile operators to win new customers. Competitive pressure can help to keep prices low, as well as provide an important incentive for network operators to improve their services, including by investing in network quality. The CMA is also concerned that the deal may make it difficult for smaller mobile ‘virtual’ network operators such as Sky Mobile, Lebara and Lyca Mobile to negotiate good deals for their own customers, by reducing the number of mobile network operators capable of hosting these ‘virtual networks’. When announcing their deal last year, both Vodafone UK and Three UK claimed that combining both businesses would result in significant benefits to customers as well as speed up the deployment of new technologies. These types of claims can sometimes justify clearing a deal that would otherwise raise competition concerns. Vodafone UK and Three UK’s claims are based on a number of assumptions about how they will combine and invest in their networks post-merger. The CMA considers these assumptions need more detailed assessment, particularly given the CMA’s concerns that the merger may reduce mobile operators’ overall incentives to invest in their networks. Julie Bon, Phase 1 decisionmaker for this case at the CMA, said: Millions of people in the UK depend on effective competition in the mobile market in order to access the best deals for them. Whilst Vodafone and Three have made a number of claims about how their deal is good for competition and investment, the CMA has not seen sufficient evidence to date to back these claims. Our initial assessment of this deal has identified concerns which could lead to higher prices for customers and lower investment in UK mobile networks. These warrant an in-depth investigation unless Vodafone and Three can come forward with solutions. Both Vodafone UK and Three UK have five working days to respond with meaningful solutions to the CMA, otherwise the deal will be referred to a more in-depth Phase 2 investigation. More information can be found on the Vodafone / CK Hutchison JV case page. Read the full article
