10년만에 오키나와에 다시 갔다. 5월임에도 살갗을 찌르는 듯한 따가운 햇살은 그대로였다. 단지 10년 전에는 나와 아내 둘 뿐이었지만, 이번에는 세 아들도 함께였다. <귀멸의 칼날>에 푹 빠져 있는 둘째는 어디가나 자연스럽고도 씩씩하게 "아리가또 고자이마쓰"라고 말하고 다닌다. 말썽쟁이 귀염둥이 막내는 마치 <잼민이는 못깨는 타워>의 실사판인냥 침대와 침대사이를 점프하느라고 정신이 없다.
첫째가 물었다.
여기 사람들은 우리나라랑은 달리 항상 기분좋게 웃으면서 친절하게 말하네
응 그걸 상냥하다고 말하는거야.
그래 뻔한 소리지만, 내 삶이 고단하고 퍽퍽하고 불안한 이유는 내가 충분히 상냥하지 못해서 일 수도 있다. 우리는 자주 선후관계를 혼동하곤 한다. 마음에서 진정으로 우러난 어쩌구는 한심한 핑계일 뿐이다. 애써서 노력한 태도가 진심이다.

Dusty Piano
There is a grand piano with a layer of dust on its keys.
It is still in tune,
Still perfectly serviceable even as it lays neglected in a warehouse.
Nobody is around to hear it sing,
And even as it contemplates trees falling unobserved in forests,
The sun shifts and the light coming through the window illuminates it.
It is still a spotlight,
Even if there is no audience.
It is still magic.
