Introduced in 2017 as the replacement for the slab sided SRX the XT5’s design is refreshing and clearly Cadillac with its signature V-shaped grille and hockey stick lamps.  Furthermore it gives this crossover a Cadillac Family look with their sedan line rather than a gussied up Tahoe. 

The 2019 Cadillac XT5 comes in four trim levels: the base XT5 aptly named Standard is the sole front wheel drive model. Next up the corporate ladder are the all-wheel-drive models starting with the Luxury, followed by the Premium Luxury, and lastly the Platinum. I suspect most buyers will be satisfied with the feature loaded Standard model starting at a meager $44,795, one of the lowest base prices in the class. Even the all-wheel-drive rendition starts off nicely priced at $54,295. From there, the options and prices add up real quick with the Premium Luxury starting at $61,795 or my top-of-the-line Platinum edition’s starting price of $72,195.

For 2019 you’ve got the choice of some new colors; Shadow Metallic, Red Horizon Tintcoat, Manhattan Noir Metallic, and Dark Mocha Metallic. As well, there’s a new Kona Brown leather interior with Sapele wood trim.

The system can distribute 100 percent of torque to either axle as conditions warrant, and the differential can split the rear axle’s share left to right enough to put all the power to one wheel, masterfully distributing torque to manage traction and optimize handling.

Like the XT4 reviewed here last week, the V6 also features cylinder deactivation, enabling it to run on four cylinders under a light load. The V6 also includes automatic start/stop. The V6 comes mated to a smooth shifting eight-speed with the only downside being an awkward up-and-over shift into Reverse.

On the road a stiff chassis and quick steering response provide a composed curve-hugging ride with a minimum amount of body sway. The optional adaptive suspension is standard equipment on the Premium Luxury and Platinum trims and although it’s not a sports oriented crossover like the Macan, it does help the XT5 challenge the twisties with confidence.

Hit Quebec’s third world pavement, however, and you’ll feel jitters reverberating through the cabin –not the Caddy of old. I’d like to get my hands on one of the base wagons equipped with 18” wheels to see if this trait would be improved over my tester’s 20” units. The fad of going with thin profile tires as a performance excuse vs. smoother rides is something I’ll discuss another day. For now let’s leave it as food for thought in your purchasing decision.

Like I mentioned earlier the XT5’s cabin is inviting, combing elegance and modern design into a sleek airy package with good outward visibility. My Platinum came with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear-outboard seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The centre dash panel is clad in suede, visually appealing but a poor choice in a high-traffic area. It feels great, but I wonder how well it will wear as my tester had two rings on the each of the door panels. (see above)

Rear seat passengers will appreciate the sliding and reclining second row. The XT5's wireless smartphone charging pad gets an upgrade for 2019 and offering 15 watts of juice (over last year's 5 watts) to speed charging times and no, my Android didn’t get charged and I had to revert to one of the four USB ports. As mentioned in the XT4 review, Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system has been greatly improved. The 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an onboard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is standard. Base trims get a Bose audio with eight speakers and audiophiles can upgrade to a 14-speaker system on Luxury and Premium Luxury versions while Platinum model offers the upgraded sound system as standard equipment.

 All 2019 XT5 models come with a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Standard fare on the Platinum but available on lesser equipped trims include rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, a safety alert seat, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring, pedestrian braking, forward and reverse automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, a rear-camera mirror (see XT4 piece), active park assist, a head-up display, and a surround-vision camera.

As good as some of these items are, I’d gladly trade them all in for Cadillac’s Night Vision system that was discontinued in 2004 for whatever reason.  While most of theses systems are little more than driving aids for the inattentive, Night Vision actually helps you see beyond the high beam’s illumination.  Common guys bring it back.

Oh and while I’m nit picking, why is there no knob for the audio system’s volume? There’s a command on the steering wheel, yes, but otherwise you need to use the touchscreen, which is about as quick as molasses on a warm day. Why have knobs gotten so taboo?

Oh and pray tell why is it that when I have a comfortable volume level on sat radio, switching to AM that it nearly breaks my eardrums and when the nav system gives me directions I can barely hear it? If we can put a man on the moon…

On a positive note, top marks for giving us real buttons to control seat temps, and the heated steering wheel, instead of burying them in computer menus like some manufacturers do.

 There's 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the XT5's second-row seats, and 63 cubic feet with the rear seats folded completely flat. That's about average for the class. You can slightly increase the total cargo space by sliding the rear seats forward. A metal divider in the back slides and locks in place to keep cargo from sliding around (nice), and there’s a storage bin hidden under the floor.

The XT5 isn’t perfect but it drives well, has a roomy airy cabin that coddles. It’s not the cheapest crossover on the market and it certainly isn’t the priciest. It’s not a performance SUV but a sporty luxury crossover. If you’re shopping luxury crossovers, don’t dismiss it on your list.

  2019 Cadillac XT4 Engine

Like the XT5, which uses a 3.6-liter V6 engine, the XT4 comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. The turbocharged unit is completely new and uses active fuel management or cylinder deactivation to provide the best fuel economy you can get from a Cadillac. And it’s also very powerful, providing 237 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque. These figures put it on a par with the basic models of the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in the United States. While the X3 xDrive30i is developing 248 horsepower, the GLC300 comes with 241 horsepower in pressure.

The XT4 engine is combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system decoupled. A dual clutch is available as an option, as is the active sports suspension, which features a continuous damping control with electronic sensors that monitor the road in real time and perform damping adjustments every two milliseconds. The XT4 is also the first Cadillac to use electrohydraulic braking assistance, which improves fuel economy and takes up less space under the hood than the traditional vacuum-assisted braking system. Specific on fuel economy, Cadillac says that the XT4 will again have up to 30 mpg.

The price of the XT4 starts at $ 35,790, including the destination rates, but does not include taxes, title, license, dealership fees and optional equipment. This sticker makes it significantly more affordable than the competition. The BMW X3, for example, sells for $ 42,650, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC sells for $ 40,050. The Audi Q5 is also significantly more expensive at $ 41,500 before the options.

Interestingly, the XT4 is also a bit more affordable than the small BMW X2, which is selling from $ 36,400. The Caddy is also just a couple of bigger more expensive than the small BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. While the XT4 seems a bit smaller than the X3, it is also larger than the X1, so I think Cadillac has a very good price position.

May 2017 Auto Sales: Crossovers Continue Positive Momentum

Some experts think the U.S. auto market has peaked, and this month adds fuel to the fire. General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, and Toyota were among the automakers that declined slightly in sales last month. Meanwhile, some automakers including Ford and Nissan squeaked out small increases. Once again, crossovers helped bolster sales when many traditionally popular passenger cars failed to make gains.

Check out the list of winners and losers from each major automaker in our May 2017 auto sales roundup:

  Ford (241,126 units, +2.2 percent)

Winner: Ford Explorer (22,715 units, +20.7 percent)

The Explorer will receive a minor refresh this fall, and a brand new generation is expected to debut in 2019. Still, the Explorer is biding its time nicely, with sales reaching 97,157 during the first five months of the year, above last year’s pace. The Explorer is the second best-selling SUV in Ford’s lineup, right behind the compact Escape.

  Loser: Ford Fiesta (4,181 units, -32 percent)

Once again, the Fiesta was a party pooper. Sales for the subcompact model fell by a greater margin than any other Ford-branded passenger car (not including SUVs). But the Fiesta is in good company. Overall, sales for Ford cars dropped 10.9 percent, while SUVs grew 4.2 percent.

  GM (237,364 units, -1.3 percent)

  Winner: Cadillac XT5 (5,752 units, +111.5 percent)

The Cadillac XT5 went on sale in April 2016 as a replacement for the SRX. A year later, it’s performing well and helped propel Cadillac to an overall sales growth of 9.2 percent last month. Caddy says the average transaction price for the XT5 is $3,000 more than its predecessor, so it has proven to be a good money-making proposition for the reimagined luxury brand.

  Loser: Chevrolet Impala (3,269 units, -37.8 percent)

The full-size sedan with a rental car stigma failed to impress in May. But so did many of Chevrolet’s other cars, including the Malibu, Sonic, Spark, and Corvette that also saw negative percentages last month. Overall, the Chevrolet brand is down slightly by 3.8 percent.

  Fiat Chrysler (193,040 units, -1 percent)

  Winner: Chrysler Pacifica (11,720 units, +325 percent)

First entering the market in April 2016, the Pacifica has become a force to be reckoned with in the minivan segment. We’ve commended it for its excellent value, balanced driving dynamics, and modern features, although the new 2018 Honda Odyssey is bound to give the Pacifica a run for its money. After introducing the standard model, FCA later released a Pacifica Hybrid, although we’re not exactly sure how popular it is because the automaker doesn’t break down sales of the gas model from the plug-in.

  Loser: Jeep Cherokee (14,635 units, -24 percent)

Typically, Jeep is one of FCA’s better performing brands in terms of sales. But last month Jeep suffered a 15-percent decline, with sliding sales for the Renegade, Cherokee, and outgoing Compass and Patriot. The Grand Cherokee and Wrangler managed to grow, however.

  Toyota (218,248 units, -0.5 percent)

  Winner: Toyota Highlander (18,115 units, +22.5 percent)

Much like the Ford Explorer, the Highlander experienced a considerable bump in sales last month. The recently refreshed crossover isn’t quite as popular as the smaller RAV4, but sales are up 20.8 percent during the first five months of the year and 22.5 percent during the month of May. The RAV4 also jumped up 18.9 percent last month, although numbers were down for bigger SUVs including the Sequoia and Land Cruiser.

  Loser: Toyota Prius (10,022 units, -19.9 percent)

Blame it on low gas prices? The Prius dropped off quite a bit last month, and sales so far this year are also down. The Camry, Corolla, and Avalon also suffered double-digit declines.

  Honda (148,414 units, +0.9 percent)

  Winner: Honda HR-V (9,533 units, +29 percent)

We’re seeing a lot of negative numbers as we look at Honda’s sales chart, but the HR-V is the most notable exception. Sales reached 9,533 in May, and a healthy 29,876 for the year. It’s more evidence that the subcompact crossover segment is hot right now. Meanwhile, the larger CR-V also performed well with a 9.6-increase in sales.

  Loser: Honda Odyssey (8,999 units, -26.3 percent)

Perhaps things will change when the all-new 2018 model begins its first full month of sales in June, but right now, the Odyssey is declining. Honda sold 8,999 units, down from 12,212 in May 2016. The Pilot also didn’t do so well last month, dropping off 11.3 percent.

  Nissan (137,471 units, +3 percent)

  Winner: Nissan Titan (4,937 units, +435.5 percent)

After 10 years without a major redesign, the Titan was completely redone for the 2017 model year. Sales have grown steadily, with year-to-date growth at 289.5 percent. So far this year, Nissan has sold 20,265 units of the Titan, which admittedly is a drop in the pond compared to pickups from Ford and GM.

  Loser: Nissan Versa (9,006 units, -25.7 percent)

Best known for its affordable price tag, the Versa slots below the Sentra, Altima, and Maxima sedans in the Nissan lineup. Sales are down 25.7 percent for the month and 16.2 percent for the year so far.

  Volkswagen Brand (30,014 units, +4.29 percent)

  Winner: Volkswagen Golf Family (7,203 units, +61.0 percent)

The Golf continues to be, arguably, the best car in VW’s U.S. lineup. Even without a new TDI model to sell, sales were up 26.5 percent for the traditional Golf, 41.6 percent for the e-Golf, and a whopping 243.9 percent for the SportWagen. The ultra-low-volume Golf R is down 34.9 percent, and sales for the GTI remain even.

  Loser: Volkswagen Tiguan (2,068 units, -52.9 percent)

  While Tiguan is less difficult to pronounce than the Touareg, it doesn’t change the fact that sales are down 52.9 percent for May and 13 percent for the year. Sales also dropped last month for the Passat, and Touareg, though less steeply. An all-new Tiguan arrives later this year with a third row option.
