MORNING PRAYERS IN THE SPIRIT DEVOTIONAL BY APOSTLE TANQUETTA
DISCERNING GOD’S VOICE VERUS YOUR VOICE (EMOTIONS)
18/11/2023
“to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.”
‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
Defination of Discernment is that which is true and factual revealed by the Holy Spirt and if its not by the Holy Spirit it can be by divination , cultures , logic and knoweldge by men.
Discernment is by the Holy Spirit , God speaks to us through the still voice of the Spirit of God after we recieve Jesus as our personal Lord and Saviour (1 Corithians 6:19)
We are guided by the still voice; it is to guide us, align and manifest himself through us.
When God speaks to us, He reveals to us his thoughts towards us (Jeremiah 29:11)
His thoughts reveal His plans that operates as a machine, so that we manifest his will and patterns.  Genesis (1:26)
GOD’S VOICE DOESN'T CONTRADICT HIS WORD
(John 17:17) His words never turn out void , they are true .  Your Voice serves you , Gods voice serves him (Gal 5:15-18)
If you operate through your flesh, you are manifesting carnality and if your are operating from the spirit you release the spirtual alignments of God.
EMOTIONS ARE NOT BAD THEY ARE USED AS AN INSIGHT TO SHOW US WHERE WE ARE WITH GOD TO RECIEVE HEALING , ALIGNMENT AS WE PRAY AND HEAR FROM GOD
Biblically we can't be lead by emotions.
Word Human means species , humans are created by GodThe word human means species - a species of people.  As human beings we were made in the image of God according to Genesis 1:26-28.   Therefore, saying we are human does not give us a pass to sin.  As being human means, I am God like - like my father God who does not sin, so I am created with the potential, reality, ability, capability to resist sin.
Walking in the spirit means you acknoweledge that your created by God in His image , we have the ability and capacity to walk out of sin and emotions because we are like God .
Your body guards your organs, your soul is where your emotions , will , heart operates , then the spirit is who we are, when we accept Jesus Christ;  the Helper , Comforter , Teacher comes in our spirits that aligns us to all truth and purity in God.
We need to understand the Godhead (The Father , Son and the Spirit)
When we open doors our souls, can be inflicated, we always need the Holy Spirit to fill us so that we don’t get contaminated .
If we don’t allow the Spirit of God lead us , meanimg the body (flesh) emotions will lead us.
When Jesus came, he walked in the body, soul and spirit and he showed us its possible to prevail by the spirit (John 5:19)
He died and took the power of sin from the Adamic nature.
(3 John 3:1-2 ) Our souls prosper spiritually when we are yeilded to the spirit of God
Your mind needs to be renewed (Romans12:2) to the word of God , needs to be in Christ Jesus
It has to be guarded (1st Peter 2:13) .
Your will needs to be  submitted to Jesus Christ , guided by him , aligned to His plans.
Scripture references (hebrews 13:21 ,
Psalms 40:28
Psalms 25:4 ,
Proverbs 3:5-6 ,
Psalms 119:105 ,
Proverbs 19:21 ,
John 10:3-4,
Ephesians 5:15-20)
Emotions needs to be guided by the spirit of God because naturally our emotions are wicked.
We can't trust them because they don't define truth , they have to be set on the things above , they require a pure heart
(Proverbs 4:23 , Luke 6:24 , Jeremiah 17:19 , Colossians 3:2, Hebrews 4:12 , Psalms 51:10 , Zec 36:26 )
The flesh it needs to understand it can't please God, it has to be submitted to the Holy Spirit, crucified it until it dies , It can't glory in the presence of God
(Romans 8:8, Romans 8 :14 Gal 5:24 , Luke9:23-24 , 1 Corithinans 29:21 , Romans 7:9)
Because we are spirits there is a Knowing in our conciousness about God‘s will and character.  This is one way we hear God and know Him.
We all clearly know God, men have no excuse that there is no God , we all know about God but we use our will to reject him.  This is how people walk in morals yet they are not born-again because God is in them
Lets not confuse this KNOWER as intuition and DEJAVU
(Romans 1:19-21 , Jeremiah 1:5
We need to submit our emotions, will, souls, flesh to the spirit of God
(Romans 1:22-26 God gave them off to the desires of their flesh, which was corrupted)
Many of us regard this scripture relating to homosexuality but this is every sin that takes the place of God in our lives.
Proverbs 19:21 If your mind can be perverted, you will sway away from God’s will and ways .
LETS BE OPEN TO GOD TO ASK HIM IF IT'S HIM SPEAKING OR HIM
LETTING US HEAL FROM THE HEART SO THAT WE DON'T MAKE DECISIONS FROM BROKENESS;
BE CAREFUL HOW YOU RELEASE YOUR WORDS;
EXAMINE IT, PRAY INTO IT AND CONFIRM THAT IT'S FROM GOD (OR MENTORS)   SEARCH OUT THE POSTURE OF YOUR HEART AND SOUL.
Be careful when your are seeking for confirmations.  The enemy can defile that place , your emotions too can because that's your desire, or the angles that come in form of light .
As your seeking for these signs take them back to God or His word (check your heart, will, soul posture )
Phillipians 4:6-7
ARE YOU ANXIOUS AFTER RECIEVING THE WORD OR ARE YOU AT PEACE?  HAVE YOU EXALTED IT ABOVE GOD?
If you find yourself in this place submit to be restored to hear from God to get back to the place of peace , If its from God he will guide you through it with peace.
Being anxious means your are walking in your ability (Psalms 103:1-5, Proverbs 23:7)
PARTIAL HEALING CAN CREATE A PARTIAL TRUTH (GOD REQUIRES WE WALK IN FULL TRUTH NOT PARTIAL )
Just because a word sounds nice doesn't mean it's from God.  God is not an author of confusion, double minded, or mental instability.
There is always balance in what God says however urgent it is, there still remains his protection , nature , character , wholeness, covering , restoration and reconciliation.
IF A WORD GIVEN TO YOU HAS BECOME AN OBESSION IT HAS BECOME AN IDOL WATCH OUT
If you don’t see progress in the word of God (Jeremiah 29:11) then inquire if your following through his instructions or it's a demonic attack
Join us tomorrow for chapter 9 the book of Romans
Hey - you join us tomorrow, at 4:00 am for Morning Prayers in the Spirit - Pour out your Spirit Lord 🔥🔥🔥.

Radiant Glory
Tumblr media
Theme Verse:
2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT)
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
There is no such thing as a pointless or purposeless Christian. Our God is an artist who makes beautiful and meaningful creations. We, the sons and daughters of the King are His final and finest earthly masterpieces (John 14:12-14, Acts 2:17, Romans 11:11-15). we are, in His sight, like a perfect spectrum of diverse colors and patterns; some of us are blues, some pinks, others yellows, while many are reds; all are beautiful in our different functions and gifts (Romans 12:4-8).
That is, as the rainbow is mentioned in the word as the radiant beauty of God’s glory (Ezekiel 1:28, Revelation 4:2-11), Christ as a perfect representation of that aforementioned glory (Hebrews 1:30, John 14:9, 2Co 4:4), and we as sharing in and being conformed into such glory as disciples of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18, 1 Peter 5:10, 2 Th 2:14, 2 Cor 4:17, John 17:21-23), it behoves us to live this life knowing that we are treasures and have treasures hidden within us ( Ephesians 1:18, 4:11, 2 Cor 4:7). With this in mind, understand saints, the rainbow, the symbol of God’s glory, doesn’t belong to the world. It is, in essence, not a symbol of prideful rebellion, but the abundant grace given to us by God in the Mesiah. We are His masterpiece, a representation of His radiant glory in Christ Jesus, His rainbow.
What Color Are You?
A more in depth look at howwe reflect this gloryin our different functions and gifts can be found in Ephesians 4:11-13, 1 Corithians 12, Romans 12: 4-8. In summary of Ephesians 4:8-13, it reads that Christ gave to the church certain individuals to function as soecific types of ministers we generally call office gifts:
Apostles: Individuals who are called to lay down foundations for other minister to work with and in. This includes but isn’t limited to church planters, ministry starters, spiritual fathers and mothers, and missionaries. They have a conviction to see God’s glory abound. (Ephesians 2:20, 1 Corinthians 3:6, Acts 16:9, Acts 14:11–18, 1 Tim 1:2)
Prophets: These are individuals who have the ability to consistently speak fourth God’s heart to people either in fourthtelling or foretelling. They, like the apostles are also foundation layers. In addition, this is usually a corrective role; meaning God raises up prophets generally to keep and bring His people back on the right track. Therefore, they ususally have strong convitions of right and wrong. ( Numbers 12:6, Acts 21:10-11, Ephesians 2:20, Jeremiah 28, Jeremiah 15:17)
Evangelist: They are individuals who have a strong desire to see non-believers saved. They do a lot of evangelizing and equipping of others to do the same. They are usually comeplling orators, really compassionate, and charasmatic (in my experience). doctrinally, they have a good grasp of the gospel message and how to communicate it effectively to their audience. They have a strong conviction to see the lost in the world saved. (2 Tim 4:1-4, Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 21:8)
Pastors: Jesus in John 10:1-10 gave some awesome examples and principles of what it means to be a Pastor/Shepherd: 1. He/she protect the sheep. 2. He/she is well acquainted with the sheep. 3. He/she leads the sheep. In addition to this, they sacrifice for the sheep (Jn. 10:11-13; Mt. 18:12-14), tend the sheep (Ps. 23:1-3), and build community and team among the sheep (Jn. 10:3, 13-15). In the same vein, these are individuals who have a conviction to see God’s people spiritually healthy and thriving-preferably together.
Teachers: They ground believers in the word of God. They have the ability to make complicated truths easier to understand and exhibition a weighty depth of biblical wisdom and knowledge. Their conviction is to see all believers conform to biblical teaching. (Titus 2:7-8, James 3:1-2, 2 Timothy 2:15, Romans 12:6-7, 1 Corinthians 12:28, 2 Timothy 1:11)
The list of the gift as mentioned in 1 Corithians 12 includes (all given by the Holy Spirit at His discrection):
Word of Wisdom: Supernatural ability to wisely speak God’s word in an applicable situation.
Word of Knowledge: Supernatural ability disclose information that could only have been revealed supernaturally.
Supernatural Faith: Holy Spirit given ability to believe God even in disadvantageous and troubling circumstances.
Healing: Supernatural ability to restore another to a better state of health.
Working of Miracles: Ability to bend, alter, and/or circumvent the laws of nature in an instance (e.g. Moses Spliting the Red Sea).
Prophecy: Supernaturally telling fourth of God’s desires, plans, or knowledge in a particular situation.
Discerning of Spirits: The ability to discern whether or not an individual is operating/speaking in the Spirit of God or otherwise. Also, the ability know whether or not one is encontering the Holy Spirit or the Enemy.
Speaking in Tongues: Holy Spirit inspired gift to speak to God in a heavenly language.
Interpretation of Tongues: Ability to interpret the gift of tongues in a public setting in order to edify all those present.
Administrations: The gifting to lead with wise counsel, one who guides.
The Gifts Mentioned in Romans 12 include:
Ministry: This is the general gift of being more willing than many to serve the body and/or individuals in practical ways.
Teaching: (not the same as the office of Ephesians 4) The gift to impart biblical truth in an easily understood way.
Exhortation: The gift to effectively encourage other to practice biblical truths.
Giving: Those who have the means and heart of generousity by the Spirit byond the average believer.
Leadership: Those with the gifting to be leaders of men; they can manage well out of love-Paul says they must be deligent.
Mercy: Those who are particularly gifted at and inclined to showing acts of kindness towards those in need or who could benefit from it.
Featured Song: Colors, Josh Garrels
Lift up your shoulders child
Breathe in
Carry the weight of love
You’ve been given
Storm is passing by
Light breaks in
As you learn to sing
Every color can
Be unwound
Woven into a wave
Of beautiful sound
Open the heavenlies and
Shake the ground
And change the world
So let all the creatures sing
Praises over everything
Colors are meant to bring
Glory to the light
Voices might fade away
And begin
Become a tapestry
We all are in
No one will ever be
Forgotten
There’s a place for us
So let all the creatures sing
Praises over everything
Colors are meant to bring
Glory to the light
Glory to the throneThis is our story
This is our song
We’re telling it slowly all life long
Of a Savior and what He’s done
It’s a mysterySource: Musixmatch

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Tumblr media
We should yearn for the Living Waters to come from us – we must pray for the Holy Spirit and His gifts.
Based on 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. There are 9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit, but hey are all given by the same Holy Spirit.
The Word of Wisdom is the gift given out by the Holy Spirit, where we receive a part of the mind of God
The Word of knowledge is a supernatural gift, where the Holy Spirit shares information with us – 2 Kings 6:9-12
The Discernment of spirits is the supernatural perception, given by the Holy Spirit, which allows a believer to identify the motivating spirit behind an act.
The Gift of diverse kinds of tongues, permits an individual to speak a different language without the previous knowledge of it. Usually the user does not maintain any knowledge of that language after they have had their manifestation.
The Interpretation of tongues is a gift which allows believers to interpret the tongues which are spoken.
Gift of prophecy – it must always glorify God and it must be based on the Scripture. If it is not based on Scripture, then it is not from God.
The Gift of Healing is when the Holy Spirit allows a believer to supernaturally heal specific illnesses. The power to heal is not of the believer but it is of the Holy Spirit that is within the believer, and the Holy Spirit decides who and when to heal.
Working of Miracles is the supernatural power, given by the Holy Spirit, to defy all human abilities or the common law of nature – it is imparted by the Spirit for specific cases.
The Gift of Faith is when the Holy Spirit gives us a surge of confidence to affirm what God has confirmed.
The bible calls us to yearn for these Gifts of the Spirit:
“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.” –
1 Corithians 14:1

THE CALL TO HOLINESS
WE CALLED TO BE HOLY. (Reflection by Fr. Ebuka Nnadi) "God called us in Christ...to be *holy and blameless* before Him" (Ephesians 1:4). My dearest ones, , as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we are reminded that we are called to holiness of life. It is a call that was there even before the creation of the world. Thus, when God created man, He bestowed upon man the sanctifying grace. This sanctifying grace is a gift from God which places man in a state of holiness. This grace was given to Adam and Eve before the fall. With the sanctifying grace, Adam and Eve were enjoying the fullness of God's company. They were fully satisfied and had everything moving well for them until Satan, cunningly in the form of a serpent, deceived them to disobey God. That disobedience separated them from God. Adam and Eve lost the sanctifying grace which is the life of the soul. Ever since then, man has been struggling to come back to God by regaining this sanctifying grace but all to no avail. It was only when Jesus came into the world and died for the sins of the world, that this sanctifying grace was restored back to man. However, it should be noted that one loses the sanctifying grace whenever he or she gives in to mortal sin; and without the sanctifying grace, no one can be holy and blameless before God.
The Church honours the Blessed Virgin Mary more than any other creature because, when she received the sanctifying grace as a gift, she kept herself holy and blameless before God. And that was the reason she was bestowed with this great title by the angel, "full of grace".
From the time we were baptized as Christians, the stain of original son was wiped away and then, our souls were bestowed with the sanctifying grace. So, we are called to holiness of life which nourishes and maintains the sanctifying grace. In Leviticus 19:2 and 11:45, God says: "Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy". In 1 Peter 1:16, Peter wrote, "For it is written, 'Be holy because I am holy'". In Matthew 5:48, Jesus says, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect". In Leviticus 20:26, God says, "You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own". In Romans 12:1, Paul advised us, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship". Paul went on to say in Ephesians 5:3, "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people". He went on to say, "Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life".
From these Biblical quotations, we can now admit that holiness is very important in our lives as Christians. In Hebrew 12:14, the Bible says, " Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord". Thus, the benefits of holiness are enormous. Holiness is the foundation of our lives as Christians. When we lose this foundation, we can no longer stand because "foundation once destroyed, what can the just do" (Psalms 11:3).
In the words of Fr. Ejike Mbaka, "Prosperity without purity is in shambles". So, each and every one of us is called to live a holy life by avoiding sin because sin is a cankerworm to sanctifying grace which is the life of the soul. Honestly, it is difficult to live a holy life in our present world. It is like swimming against the current. But the Bible assures us in 119:9, "How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word".
Most importantly, we should be holy because we are God's Temples. This is confirmed in 1 Corinthians 3:16, "Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?"  Paul warns us in 1 Corithians 6:18-19, "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own"
Finally, if you keep yourself holy, God will make you his battle axe, that He will use to shatter your enemies (Jeremiah 51:20). Therefore, without holiness, whatever service you are rendering to God is vain. Truly, there are great benefits in living a holy life. We are told that the prayer of holy person has great power (James 5:16). Therefore, let us strive to live holy lives for effectiveness in our prayers and ministries. Fr. Ebuka cares.

Topic: Understanding the Time
By. Bro. Israel Apeh
💥
God day My Beloved Brethren.
I welcome all of you in Jesus Name Amen
Am Bro. Israel Apeh as Mentioned in the flayer.
Am glad to share with us Tonight.
Be blessed as we equip our selves IJN AMEN.
MESSAGE:
TEXT : 1 Peter 4:1-11, 1John2:18
ENTITLED: Understanding the Time.
A case study of the pandemic and calamities around the world as signs and wonders for the second coming of Christ.(Last days).
1 Peter 4:7. But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.
PRAISE THE LORD BELOVED,
LET US START WITH PRAYER:
Dear Father, we thank you for a moment like this. Lord as read and study your word, please grant us total understanding and the Grace to be conscious and pragmatic about your words in Jesus Name Amen.
EPIGRAPH/INTRO:
Beloveth, Time they said everything including money. That is why we don’t have to joke with time nor waste it. I recently read an article about time, and it says I(time) am powerful, if you waste me, I will destroy your future and destiny. So use me well. (I was shock to read that). Lesson: Beloved, never play with your God given time, always use it rightly.
The Devil has blindfolded Many men and women of God are carried away by fame, tithe, prosperity and posterity. We are failing to pay great attention to the season and time for the last days.
1 John 2:18. Children, it is the last hour the end of this age; and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming the one who will oppose Christ and attempt to replace Him, even now many antichrists (false teachers) have appeared, which confirms our belief that it is the last hour.
Dear Beloved, the Holy Spirit had bestowed on me to announce, remind and disclose to all and sundry that “The set TIME is near that when we first believe”. The bells are ringing with miracles, signs and wonders. God made everything beautiful in His TIME.
Beloveth, be reminded that there is a time and a season for everything. Let us be on our guard for the end is NEAR.
Message Outline:
A. I will highlight two (2) stories about TIME so that we can build our Message God willing; (The first, is the story of Gehazi and Elisha and secondly is the story of the ten Virgins ).
B. Lesson from the Stories.
C. Implication of these stories
D. possible solution to redeeming our time in our dispensation.
A. The Story of Gehazi and Elisha (MOG) (2Kings 5:20-27) In summary Gehazi miss out his destiny completely. After serving Elisha for some time, when it was closer to receive a double portion of anointing, he miss out completely just for silver and garment. (V26. Elisha said to him, "Did my heart not go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? IS IT A PROPER TIME to accept money and clothing and olive orchards and vineyards and sheep and oxen and male and female servants?).
B. The story of the ten virgins. (Mat 25:1-13) In summary, all the ten virgins prepared for the coming of the bridegroom. But unfortunately, the other five failed to understand the timing. (Matthew 25:6. But at Midnight(time) there was a shout, 'Look! The bridegroom is coming! Go out to meet him).
LESSONS FROM THE STORIES:
1. Gahazi failed to understand the time. The time which Gahazi was, was to stay close to the Man of God to continue his service, not to go after silver and garment(gifts).
2. The five unwise virgins, actually made effort to fall within the time, but unfortunately they missed by out because the did not fully prepare for the bridegroom(Christ).
IMPLICATIONS FOR NOT UNDERSTANDING THE TIME:
1. Not been alert: Beloveth, Jesus is coming like a thief in the night night. 1 Thessalonians 5:2 & 2Peter 3:10.
Who knows that it could be when we are so busy with our night activities or sleeping, that He will return. In the parable of the Ten young virgins, Jesus came in/by NIGHT.
Beloveth, the perilous times, signs and wonders of Jesus second coming are clear (the pandemic, earthquakes, massacre killings, Nation raising up against another, economic world order, micro chip, the mark of the beast etc.)
May the Good Lord give us an understanding of the Time concerning these happenings in Jesus Name.
2. We become lukewarm: Just like the Laudecian Church. May of us are neither hot nor cold.(Rev 3:16-18). We need a revival in the Land. (SS&S 309: Revive thy work Oh Lord!,
Now to thy saint appear,
Oh, Speak with power to every Soul,
And let thy people hear).
Beloveth, without revival, when the trumpet shall sound and time shall be no more, many will may not hear it sound.
3. We are sleeping: Many of us are sleeping instead of whatching and waiting in prayer. (Eph 5:14 says awake oh sleepers and Christ will shine on you.) 1 Corithians 15:34 also encourage us to awake for our righteousness. Grace is all I see for all of us in Jesus name.
4. We are carried away: Beloveth, let remember Lot's wife. The enemy has drift and digressed Many men and women of God away. Their attention is now channeled by fame, tithe, prosperity and posterity. We are failing to pay great attention to the season and time for the last days.
5. We are unprepared and unready: Beloveth, from our text today in
1 Peter 4:7. But the end of all things is at hand(this means time is almost running out); therefore we need to be ready, serious and watchful in our prayers.
6. Lovers of ourselves only: Beloveth, we are in the last days. 2 Timothy 3:1-2 But know this, that in the last days, perilous times will come: v2. For people will be lovers of self narcissistic, self-focused, lovers of money impelled by greed, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane and they will despise what is good.
My Beloved Brethren, the devil knows and Understand that his TIME is short, so he Working hard to win souls for his kingdom(hell fire).
This why we must wise up, let us know that the end time is near.
SOLUTIONS TO REDEEMING OUR TIME:
A. Be Alert: from our text we need to Remain holy, have self-control and surrender all to Jesus (1Pet4:7).
B. Love God and Love one to another: Be there for others, 1 Peter 4:8. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins."
C. Preach the Gospel: Those who preach must preach God's messages; those who serve must serve with the strength that God gives them, so that in all things praise may be given to God through Jesus Christ, to whom belong glory and power forever and ever.(1peter4:11) Amen.
Beloveth, in the light of the above charge, may announced to us that: let us be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor is not in vain in the Lord(1 Corinthians 15:58).
And that, Christ is coming quickly, and He is bringing rewards with him, to give to every one according to his work. (Revelation 22:12.)
Dear Beloved, time and chance happened to them all, therefore, let us have this Understanding that the end is near and be HOLY, and also WORK for your reward while is day for night is coming where no man can work. PRAISE THE LORD HALLELUJAH.
PRAYER & MEDITATION:
Dear Lord, thank you for the revelation of your word. Please grant us the grace stay prepared and ready for the second coming of our Saviour in Jesus Name AMEN . GOD BLESS YOU RICHLY.

1 Corithians 10
Warnings From Israel’s History
1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a] 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test Christ,[b] as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Idol Feasts and the Lord’s Supper
14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19 Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
The Believer’s Freedom
23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”[f]
27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

A Mardi Gras Prayer...
I used to work with high school and middle school students on retreats. The leaders used a game to get across what Jesus describes in the Gospel today. Two students were invited up to the stage area in front of their peers. Then, they were placed on either end of the stage and blindfolded. (The stage in question was about 6 inches off the ground.) Two little squirt guns were placed on the floor somewhere between them. Their peers were divided into teams who would verbally help the blindfolded people to find the squirt guns. Whoever found a squirt gun first won (and the stage got all wet). Afterwards, the leader asked the blindfolded teens about their experience. “It was hard because everyone was shouting,” they would say. “I couldn’t understand what people were saying. I couldn’t pick out the right voice to listen to.” After all, half of the directions shouted into the room were intended for the other student.
The exercise pointed out that we get directions, advice, instructions, advertisements, etc. from many different voices on a daily basis. It can be difficult to pick out God’s voice amidst the clamor. Often we even add to the clamor for others! Jesus tells us today that it is important to listen to his voice, the good teacher, and to be attentive to the interior work we need to do with him. Then he can draw good fruit from us, and others can recognize us as good teachers, too.
In case you hadn’t noticed, Easter is late this year. It’s not until April 21! Because of this, we get more of Ordinary Time than we usually do before Lent. I usually hear these readings about Jesus’ victory over death and his teachings in the glow of recent celebrations of Easter Resurrection and Pentecost missioning. Today, I will be encouraged to hear Paul’s words as I prepare to enter into my Lenten practices and interior work: “Be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”
