The Beach Boys last charting single and last top 20 album until this album was released in 1968. Around that time, Brian Wilson ceased to function as a songwriting member of the group and, culturally, the music changed. So #album sales declined until this greatest hits album, #endlesssummer, in #1974, which was immediately followed by another greatest hits album, #spiritofamerica, released in #1975 and then two more greatest hits albums before the end of #1976. This surge in popularity seemed to come out of nowhere. I remember at the time I was around middle school going into high school, and it seemed like all of my friends had Endless Summer and Spirit of America. I think the 70s was getting tired of itself. I think it was getting tired of decadence and hedonism and soullessness. Punk was one response. Nostalgia was another, and The Beach Boys with their innocent sound and songwriting, for the most part, was a breath of fresh air at the time. Brian Wilson returned on the next studio album as producer and scored a hit with a cover of #rockandrollmusic by @chuckberry. Their next and final hit was #kokomo in the #80s. The Greatest Rock Song of All-Time!

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s song “Free Bird” is the best rock song of all time. Their story is absolutely tragic & heart-breaking (due to a plane crash that killed members of the band, only 2 remaining survivors to this day who are still alive).

To say the band was proud of their Southern heritage would be a tremendous understatement. The band would typically play on stage with an enormous Confederate banner on stage to signify southern pride. Granted I don’t wave any flag but the United States of America flag (totally inclusive ideals), so I cannot personally promote the flag of the Confederacy due to it’s inherent promotion of slavery. Dude, don’t get me wrong I absolutely LOVE the south - just weirds me out to see the flag for the C.S.A.

Having said that - I have to give it up for this song. No matter what one believes - I certainly believe the song Free Bird perfectly encapsulates the true spirit of Rock’n’Roll. Between the romantic piano, the smooth vocals, and soaring guitars ripping across the frequency - this song is the end-all-be-all of rock music. Despite the tragedy & controversy surrounding this band’s legacy - there is no denying that Free Bird is the one song that all rock songs wish they could be. Totally.🤙🏻
