Por Ricardo Avila Palacios* A las 3:44 p.m. del 17 de octubre de 1994, una tarde soleada de lunes festivo, Gilmar Mayo Lozano pasó a la historia: a sus 25 años, con una estatura de 1,90 m y 72 kilos de peso, sin buscar aquel día el instante de la fama, tomó impulso para romper la inercia y a una velocidad cercana a los 7,5 metros por segundo desafió la ley de la gravedad, frenó sutilmente su carrera para iniciar el despegue, tomar vuelo de espaldas con su cuerpo arqueado hacia atrás para superar el listón y mientras su humanidad dibujaba una cruz en el cenit de su salto para luego descender, ya sabía que cuando aterrizara contra el colchón era nueva marca nacional y suramericana de salto alto, con 2,33 metros. Una maniobra que no duró más de siete segundos y que lo catapultó para ubicarlo a seis centímetros del registro olímpico logrado por el estadounidense Charles Austin (Atlanta 96) y a 12 centímetros de la marca orbital del cubano Javier Sotomayor (Salamanca 93). “No iba preparado para esa marca (ubicada en la casilla 100 del escalafón mundial, en julio de 2017), no la había planeado para ese día. Yo estaba asustado porque en mi primer salto las esquirlas de espuma que salían de la colchoneta me caían en los ojos de lo vieja que estaba, era la peor colchoneta en la que había saltado en mi vida. Además, la pista sintética (del estadio Hernán Ramírez Villegas, en Pereira) estaba cristalizada y parecía que estuviera corriendo sobre madera. Después entré rápido en ritmo de competencia porque había un cubano con una marca personal de 2,35 metros y estuve muy enchufado. Los 2,33 los pasé en mi segundo intento”. Y aunque Gilmar no había planeado hacer ese día el mejor salto de su carrera atlética, parece que el entorno adverso, un rival cubano de alto nivel y un video de su primer salto se confabularon a su favor. El atleta Lewis Asprilla grabó el primer salto de su amigo, quien al observarlo con detenimiento, junto a su entrenador Eduardo Paz, halló una falencia técnica que corrigió en su segundo turno, el de la marca suramericana. Han pasado 29 años y ningún saltador en Suramérica ha podido batir la altura saltada por el colombiano. Jessé Farías de Lima (Brasil), con 2,32 m, rozó el registro de Mayo, el 2 de septiembre de 2008. En Colombia, Wánner Miller, con 2,28 m, es quien más se ha acercado al salto, pero sin inquietar a Gilmar, quien ostenta una de las marcas vigentes más longevas del atletismo colombiano, en una antigüedad liderada por el boyacense Domingo Tibaduiza, quien desde 1978 posee los récords en 5.000 (13:29.67) y 10.000 metros (27:53.02). La segunda es la antioqueña Ximena Restrepo, con su inolvidable actuación en los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 92, donde ganó la presea de bronce en los 400 metros, con tiempo de 49.64 segundos, desde entonces marca suramericana. En esta parte del continente Gilmar también posee el tercer récord más antiguo en hombres, detrás de Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (Brasil), plusmarquista suramericano de los 800 metros (1:41.77) -oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de Los Ángeles y plata en Seúl 88-¬ desde el 26 de agosto de 1984; y del también brasileño Robson Caetano da Silva (Brasil), dueño desde el 22 de julio de 1988 del mejor tiempo en los 100 metros (10 segundos). ero pese a la huella, hasta ahora indeleble, de su actuación en Pereira, Gilmar se lamenta por no haber subido al podio olímpico. “Si hubiera ganado una medalla en Juegos Olímpicos, seguramente ahora tendría apoyo para sacar adelante mi club de saltadores aquí en Quibdó. Mire, estoy trabajando con las uñas, tengo 30 niños y algunos de ellos llegan a entrenar sin almorzar y yo no puedo hacer mucho. Ojalá vengan a Chocó para que vean que las condiciones son difíciles para sacar nuevos talentos y eso no es justo, porque hay jóvenes con mayor talento que yo, y si ellos no ven progreso entre los que estamos retirados, pues yo no podría ser ejemplo de superación”. En realidad, poco ha cambiado el asunto. En 1987, cuando Gilmar participó en su primer Suramericano Juvenil, a sus 18 años, se calzó unos tenis rotos que su madre, Melania Lozano, le regaló. Con ellos hizo los ejercicios de calentamiento y con unos spikes prestados ejecutó su salto alto con un pobre registro de 1,85 metros. ¿Y los otros atletas qué le decían al verlo con tenis agujereados?, le pregunto. “Nada, porque sencillamente yo no era nadie, era un aparecido. Ellos sí tenían tenis de marca y por eso me sentí inferior”, comenta este hombre nacido en Pailitas, Cesar, el 30 de septiembre de 1969, pero que es chocoano por adopción. Al mirar por el espejo retrovisor, no olvida que un día de 1987 llegó a un campo de fútbol en Quibdó, para probarse en un equipo de atletismo. El técnico Guillermo Valencia lo puso a prueba con el test de Couper, una prueba de resistencia que se basa en recorrer la mayor distancia posible en 12 minutos a una velocidad constante. “Después de esto no volví sino a la semana siguiente, todo me dolía y no podía ni mover los pies, no me gustaba correr. Le dije al profesor Valencia que yo podría ser un gran saltador. Entonces me subí a un puente y me lancé al vacío. HOMILY for St Ignatius of Loyola

Lev 25:1, 8-17; Ps 66; Matt 14:1-12

Our Province recently launched a website called ‘DominicanJubilee.com’, and the prayer written by the Master of the Order that we’re saying every day in our current St Dominic Novena refers to the “double Jubilee” of this year, and today four of our brothers, two of whom were schooled by the Society of Jesus, will begin their Jubilee Pilgrimage as they commemorate the journey taken by the first Dominicans in England 800 years ago; returning to our roots as a Province. This language of Jubilee, of course, is derived from the passage from Leviticus that we’ve just heard: “You will declare this fiftieth year sacred and proclaim the liberation of all the inhabitants of the land. This is to be a jubilee for you; each of you will return to his ancestral home, each to his own clan.” Our brothers, witnessing to the Gospel as they go, speaking of God and to God, will certainly be proclaiming the freedom won for us in Christ as they travel past our ancestral ‘homes’, going from Ramsgate to Oxford. But what of us who remain behind?

We are called to live the jubilee by renewing our fervour as Dominicans, doing what Dominicans have been called to do from the very beginning – preaching for the salvation of souls – and we can trace the effects of our Dominican mission, when it is lived out faithfully and well, in the life of today’s saint, Ignatius.

For while Iñigo de Loyola was convalescing from a cannonball injury in his family home in the Basque country, he turned to the only books available to him, both written by Dominicans: the Life of Christ by Ludolph and The Golden Legend by Bl. James of Voragine. The Dominican work of writing spiritual works thus touched him, and indeed, led to his liberation from his chivalric fantasies and focussed his mind on the idea of giving his life for the Gospel. So, at the end of reading these books he said to himself: “St Francis did it. St Dominic did it. Why shouldn’t I?”

So, in 1522, Ignatius makes his way on pilgrimage to Montserrat, to the shrine of Our Lady, but he stops at the nearby town of Manresa, and there, he seeks hospitality with the Dominican friars. During his time in the Dominican Priory at Manresa he joined the friars in prayer (even though he knew no Latin), attended the Dominican Rite Mass during which he receives a vision which convinces him about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and he begins to go to confession with a Dominican friar to guide him and answer his questions about God. Later on, while studying in Salamanca, he would continue to go to the Dominicans at San Esteban for confession. How vital, then, is this work of giving spiritual direction, and setting aside hours for regular confessions in our priory church. Indeed, tomorrow, some of our youngest parishioners will be making their first confession. For through our fidelity to our Dominican life and work, perhaps, like those friars at Manresa, we might touch some young person who is searching like St Ignatius. Certainly, St Ignatius was much affected by his time in Manresa with the Dominicans. Often, later in life, when carrying out a task he would say: “I saw it thus in Manresa”, and it is now thought that the Saint’s Spiritual Exercises were first drafted in the Dominican cell where he lived in Manresa.

So, through steadfastly carrying out our ministry here in our time we carry out the jubilee work of proclaiming liberation to all the inhabitants of this land, especially through faithfully preaching the fullness of the Gospel, and diligently offering the sacrament of reconciliation. For some, parish ministry might not seem as exciting as taking to the road as a missionary or teaching in Oxford. But, as St Ignatius learnt, God isn’t found in what we find exciting nor even in what we think we want, but in unexpected places and situations.

The work of being a faithful Preacher of Truth is, however, not without peril. For as today’s Gospel reminds us: we might lose our heads. Nevertheless, as St Ignatius saw so clearly, and as he wrote in his Spiritual Exercises, the goal of our human life is to love God, and so, to have fullness of life with him for ever. So, he said, “we should “desire and choose only what helps us more towards the end for which we are created”, that is, our every thought, word, and action is directed towards loving God more, even if it should cost our lives. Hence he counselled one of the first Jesuits to remember “how the blessed saints like St Francis and St Dominic and many others bore themselves… to have recourse to the true and higher Wisdom, [and] to ask and obtain more light [from God] in order to arrange all things to [God’s] greater service and honour.”

On his feast day, and in this Dominican jubilees year, we would do well to heed St Ignatius’s words and arrange all things ad majorem Dei gloriam!

Para optar al galardón hay que tener por lo menos uno de estos requisitos: sobrevenir sido internacional invariable, medallista franquista invariable o sobrevenir conocido un récord gallego invariable en pruebas olímpicas. Luego están sub-23, sub-20, sub-18 y sub-16, que optan los que fueron campeones de España de sus categorías. Por su parte, de los atletas master, optan al premio los medallistas internacionales, tanto en campeonatos del mundo como de Europa, y aquellos campeones de España en sus respectivas categorías.

Los galardones en la categoría absoluta están más que claros. Adrián Ben y Ana Peleteiro volverán a repetir un año más. No hay empleo a la sorpresa habida cuenta que sus temporadas fueron inmejorables. Ambos finalistas mundiales y el oro de Ana en el Europeo bajo techo es bagaje más que suficiente para admitir una vez más la distinción.

Más disputadas se antojan las demás categorías, donde optan, de nuevo Paula Iglesias, con muchas posibilidades de hacerse con el galardón de mejor atleta en sub-23, sub-20, sub-18 y sub-16, con los méritos anteriormente expuestos. Ourense y la pista mágica

Mágico, increíble el bullicio vivido en el campeonato de España categórico de pista cubierta que por primera vez visitaba Galicia. El conocido, que desbordó las instalaciones de Expourense; lograron subir la temperatura en un proscenio ideal para que los atletas brillaran con el empuje que les llegaba desde la rastra, totalmente volcada con los atletas y, si eran gallegos, la pista se venía debajo. 

Los atletas españoles devolvieron el cariño y el calor de la rastra con un puñado de mejores marcas personales, en una pista eléctrica, que se ganó a pulso el ser la relato, conexo a Salamanca, para velocistas y saltadores, que vio como Pablo Torrijos hacía cachos el record de España de triple brinco y con la mínima para los Juegos Olímpicos, en el que ya ha sido calificado como el mejor campeonato de España de pista cubierta de la historia, con una estructura que rayó la perfección.

Seis plusmarquistas Sobre el tartán ourensano se dieron cita hasta seis plusmarquistas nacionales, sesenta y un campeones de España y entre los más de 500 atletas clasificados siete coruñeses que no se perderían el estreno de Galicia en los nacionales bajo techo con un arqueo de seis medallas para los atletas gallegos. Los oros de la riberiense Ana Peleteiro en triple, el mariñano Jean Marie Okutu en largo, las platas de la mugardesa Belén Toimil en peso, la monfortina Saleta Fernández en prestigio y del viveriense Adrian Ben en 800 ml, con la atleta de O Barco Leticia Gil, bronce en largo.

Los primeros en salir a la pista fueron los atletas del 200, donde A Coruña estaba representada por los dos mejores atletas gallegos de todos los tiempos en la distancia, el coetáneo recordman Mauro Triana y Sergio Rodríguez Teixeira, acreditado esta temporada en 21.75. 

No tuvieron suerte con las calles en el sorteo, en una prueba que penaliza y mucho el valer por las calles 3 y 4. Mauro Triana llegaba este año con una mejor marca de 21.76, calle 4, tocaba valer para poder acaecer el corte de golpe a semifinales. 

Jesús Gómez, el coetáneo campeón de España sub23 iba por calle 6, Mauro Triana no se arrugó para entrar segundo y golpe directo para semifinales con mejor marca de la temporada para detener el crono en 21.53. Mientras, Sergio Rodríguez Teixeira llegaba con en un estado de forma anormal en los 200 bajo techo, líder del año gallego con 21.75 hacía presagiar que era factible el golpe a las ‘semis’, pero no se encontró en ningún momento en carrera, al rémora de la calle 4 le tocó capotear con el coetáneo campeón de España, Dani Rodríguez, su marca de 22.08 le cerraba las puertas para avanzar de ronda.

Semifinales En semifinales le siguió la mala suerte con el sorteo de calle, si en eliminatorias le tocaba calle 4 en esta caía a la calle 3, tocaba la heroica, el pase se antojaba  muy difícil, máxime cuando en calle 6 llevaba a Jesús Gómez de nuevo, calle 5 a Jaime Sardinero y calle 4 a Sergio Husillos, todos llegaban con mejor marca esta temporada que el atleta herculino, pero Mauro Triana se crece en las dificultades y en una carrera soberbia llegaba con un crono de 21.63, una marca anormal para valer en calle 3 y con el pase a la final, una final más, en su palmarés.

En la final, corría con Jesús Gómez por tercera vez y con Javier Troyano que le precedían en las calles buenas, las calles 5 y 6. Mauro Triana iba en calle 4 con Manuel Berea por detrás en calle 3. Antia Martínez no salió admisiblemente en los tacos, pero tuvo ritmo en carrera para irse a unos fantásticos 8.91, mejor marca personal y quedando a sólo dos centésimas del pase a semifinales.

Velocidad corta La velocidad corta tenía a Javier García “Chichu” como el único representante gallego en los metros lisos. El campeón gallego categórico llegaba con una mejor marca de 6.88, marca que le daba todas las credenciales para conseguir meterse en las semifinales, la intención era acercarse a los 6.82 que marcan el tope gallego en las piernas de Pablo Comendador

Susto y de los grandes cuando Chichu se movió en la salida, pero no despegó los pies de los tacos, lo que le valió una maleable amarilla, pero seguía en competición. Salida anormal, como todas a las que nos tiene acostumbrados, aguantó la presión de salida preparatorio para irse a unos sensacionales 6.89, a una centésima de su mejor marca personal, que le valió para progresar a las semifinales. En su semifinal no tuvo su día, una mala salida le lastró de cara a conseguir una buena marca, cerrando su décimo con 6.95 y con muy buenas sensaciones de cara a la temporada al ambiente excarcelado.

El medio fondo tenía un nombre propio para los coruñeses, el de Elian Numa López, coetáneo subcampeón de España de 800 en pista cubierta sub23, llegaba a la cita gallega con muy buenas sensaciones, logrando rozar la barrera de 1.50 en el mitin de Madrid. Corría en la primera semifinal, una semifinal dura con el atleta que defendía el título, el murciano Mariano García, y que buscaba el pequeño desgaste de cara a su enfrentamiento con el viveriense Adrián Ben.

Elian Numa López le echó valía y salió tirando para insensibilizar la carrera, buscando el pase por tiempos o poder sorprender a Mariano García, al final la método se impuso y el murciano no tuvo problemas para imponerse por delante del coruñés que con su marca de 1.51.09 no pudo meterse en la final.

Los 1.500 metros tenían doble protagonismo herculino, se intuían carreras tácticas, no es casquivana valer dos carreras de esa distancia en dos días al mayor nivel, lo que daba opción a que en un final apretado los dos tuvieran opciones de sorprender a los favoritos, pero no fue el caso, Pablo Bocelo caería eliminado con un crono de 3.57.93, en una carrera dominada por el gran predilecto Nacho Fontes, que se impondría con 3.52.15. Por su parte Angharad Davies lograba su mejor marca personal al conseguir una marca de 4.38.28, en la semifinal dominada por Esther Guerrero.

Tasmania 2019

One Week in Tasmania. March 17-24.

Tasmania is 100x the area size of Singapore, yet its population is only 500,000. If you want nature, National Parks, lakes and farms, coastal drives and forest walks, this is the place.

It is also home to animals such as Tasmania devils, quolls, wallabies, pademelons and kangaroos.

We squeezed a 7-day itinerary into 6 days. Kinda round the island in 2,000km. Do-able but a little tight on Day 1.

Took the red-eyed flight, and arrived in Melbourne to transit to Hobart. Our Quantas arrived in Hobart at 2pm. Jetstar may get you 4 more hours - precious as most shops and eateries in the woods close at 5pm!

Either flight, I would recommend staying one afternoon and night at Hobart, to rest up before driving west.

We rented a car from Apex car rental. Small local Aussie company, friendly and flexible service which allowed us to return the GPS when we learned that iPhone Google Maps can be plugged into the car system. Their office and carpark is 1 min away from airport departure hall. We called for their van transport upon collecting bags, and by the time we reached pick up point, the van arrived. We picked a Hyundai sedan, $41 a day. Functional, but if you have budget, go for a heavier car as traveling speed can go up to 120km/h.

Day 1 (Hobart to Strahan, total 5 hrs drive)

Upon collecting car at 2pm, we made our way from East to West. No time for proper lunch!

Buy the Multi-Parks Pass for $60. Useful and good as it covers two adults, one car, and all National Parks! We bought ours from ticketing counter at Russel Falls.

1 hr 15 min to reach Russel Falls, within Mt Field National Park. Do the walk up to Russel Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Tall Trees (Eucalyptus) trek. Takes about 3 hours return.

(If you start off in the morning, you may want to drive on 1.5 hours more to a recommended next stop for lunch. The Wall in the Wilderness Cafe)

From Mt Field National Park, it’s 3hr 45 min to Strahan. Tiring drive as night was falling. Wild animals come out more at night, and there are no street lamps, so drive with extra care.

Make stops for coffee or dinner - which we did not! Or rather, we tried to. We stopped at Queenstown, a supposed big town an hour before Strahan, but all shops were closed by 6. We met a nice lady named Joy at the Paragon Theatre who cooked up some carbonara for us and allowed us to dine in this old-school theatre screening hall - deeply appreciated at 10pm!

Salt Box Hideaways is more Airbnb than hotel. Self-picked the keys from a locked box. Apartment was hipster lovely! Morning surprise view of a lake as we raised the curtains!

Day 2 (Strahan to Cradle Mt, total 2.5 hrs drive)

Strahan is a sleepy, scenic town by Gordon River. A great place for breakfast is The Coffee Shack & Morsels, opposite Gordon River Cruise. Great avocado toast. Cruise is damn expensive, don’t bother. 42 Degrees is a restaurant on a higher ground - but not opened for lunch. Check online.

A 20 min drive brings us to Henry Dunes. A peculiar area of fine white sand on top of a hill - gentle climb up sandy slopes.

1 hour more brought us to Montezuma Falls’ start-off point. To see the Falls - highest in Tasmania - is a 3 hours return trek thru rainforest. We just trekked a bit in and out of the rainforest. Looking back, this is not a recommended spot.

Another 1 hr 30 min to Discovery Parks Cabin and Camping site. Buy food (raw or cooked) along the way and top up petrol. Discovery Parks is an accommodation facility WITHIN Cradle Mountain, which is important and cool. We got the Family Cabin (good for 4 pax) as the hip cabins were sold out. Camp site has no food. Bring your own to cook in communal kitchen. Toilets are communal too but they provide towels. But super near Cradle Mt National Park Visitor Centre, which is useful for the next day.

5 min drive away is Devils@Cradle. They organize Tasmanian Devils feeding at 5:30pm and /or 8:30pm. Check online.

Day 3 (Cradle Mt - Launceston, total 2.5 hrs drive)

One of the highlights is the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain National Park. Very organized shuttle buses that bring you in, very Jurassic Park feels. Park your car at Visitor Centre for free, grab a coffee (opens 8:30am) and then take the shuttle (every 20 min from 8am). Remember the Multi-Parks Pass? Gets you free shuttle bus tickets. Show at counter to redeem. Bus service is a loop service with 5 stops.

We took the 9:30am bus to Dove Lake. A lake formed by glaciation some 10,000 years ago. Absolutely stunning scenery and tranquillity. Walk around the lake takes about 3 hours, many photo points. Including a boat shed.

We then took the shuttle bus back to our car and drove to Peppers Lodge/ Cradle Mountain Lodge Tavern for lunch. Good portions!

Some other 20 min to 1 hour walks, there is one apparently beautiful walk just next to Peppers Lodge. Or, the famous Overland Walk, that takes 6 days. Can fly into Launceston and drive 2.5 hrs here.

We went to Devils@Cradle, a sanctuary for breeding the endangered Devils, in time for a 1pm Keepers Tour. Very informative and you get to see Devils and Quolls.

From here, it’s a 2.5 hours drive to Launceston. Can stop by Sheffield (town of murals) or Christmas Hills Raspberry Farms for tea break.

Launceston is the second largest city of Tasmania. We stayed at Mercure, which is along Brisbane Street, their city centre where you could walk to cafes, eateries and shops. Ate at Pachinko, an Asian fusion place.

Day 4 (Launceston to the East, total 4 hrs drive)

A very short drive (5 min) from city centre of Launceston will bring you to Cataract Gorge. A pretty and easy park to walk around after breakfast (pancakes and French toast!) at Basin Cafe located right at the park. Spend about 2 hours here, including breakfast.

On the way to the East (2.5 hours to Bay of Fires), we stopped by Ledgerwood. To see the 9 unique war memorial carvings on cedar trees.

We also stopped here for lunch and ice cream at a simple Ledgerwood Kitchen.

If you like cheese, the next pee or coffee stop could be Pyengana Dairy Company. We stopped instead at a roadside kiosk for coffee with a mountain view, and a little stretch-leg shopping at The Shop in The Bush.

Bay of Fires is a secluded pristine white beach with rocks with orange marks, formed by lichens. After some photos, we drove down and visited a few other fine beaches, towards St Helens. Took us 1.5 hours to arrive at Bicheno. Bicheno town centre has a few eateries, we had fish and chips dinner at Beachfront Bistro.

We stayed in Diamond Island Resort and Penguin Parade in Bicheno. Owned by Koreans, the resort is on a good piece of property. It is linked to an island via a thin stretch of sandy beach, fairly unique as you can see waves crashing in from both sides. When tide is low, you can walk to the island. And on summer nights, you get to see peri-penguins coming onto resort property. We were lucky to spot one as soon as we stepped onto the viewing deck! Room is villa style with two floors - kitchen and sofa on the ground floor, and beds for 4 on the second floor. Maintenance could be better lah.

Day 5 (Great Eastern Drive, total 4 hrs drive)

East Coast Natureworld at Bicheno, a wildlife sanctuary 5 min from our resort is a must! Greatest animal experience feeding kangeroos, and meeting wombats, white peacocks, black swans and more Devils. There is a cafe that opens at 9am with waffles and coffee.

1 hour drive brings us to Freycinet National Park (Multi-Park Pass, again), and we had lunch at Robertson’s at Freycinet Lodge. High-end accommodation for my 70th birthday? Haha.

5 min drive upwards from Freycinet Lodge is the car park to start walking trek up Wineglass Bay Lookout. 1.5 hours return hike. Moderate to tough. Read and heard many said lookout point is enough. Don’t need to go to the beach, which is another 1.5 hours return. Super popular attraction, ie crowded with tourists wanting that postcard shot.

Freycinet to Hobart is a 3 hours drive. You may break it up with coffee breaks at Swansea (1 hour), Orford (45 min) and Hobart (1+ hour). We stopped by Kate’s Berry Farm for good pancakes, and awesome boysenberry (cross between rasp and black) ice cream!

Arrive at Hobart before 6pm to see the HarbourFront. We ate an assortment of seafood at Fish Frenzy, right by the water.

Day 6 (Hobart)

Our Airbnb was on the right street - Elizabeth St - that brings you down to the HarbourFront. But it was a 30 min walk one day!

We went to Battery Point to have breakfast at Jackman and McRoss, many friends recommended. And then a short walk to Salamanca Weekend Market (ONLY on Saturdays 8am to 3pm, so plan your itinerary well). Hop on the hippest ferry MR1 or MR2, the Mona Roma, to MONA - Museum of Old and New Art. $22 for two ways ferry, each ride 20’min. Book your return timing as soon as you reach museum. We took the 1:15pm ferry to, and 5pm ferry back.

Museum entry was $28. Worth it as it’s one of a kind. Eccentric!

We skipped Port Arthur, Richmond Village and Mt Wellington cos not very interested. If you have one more day in Hobart, you could try those. Or Huon Valley for a walk above treetops on the Tahune Airwalk.

La décima edición del Gran Premio Diputación de Castellón-Memorial José Antonio Cansino, este miércoles 14 de junio en Castellón (España), contó con una importante participación de atletas sudamericanos, que siguen con su fase de preparación. En los 400 metros para damas, donde ganó la cubana Roxana Gómez con 51.13, la ecuatoriana Nicole Caicedo fue segunda con 51.71. Y así batió su propio récord nacional (51.80) que había logrado once días antes en el meeting de Salamanca. Otro récord nacional cayó en los 1.500 metros y en este caso a cargo de la argentina Fedra Luna, quien fue 4a. en la carrera con 4:10.98 y mejoró su registro de 4:11.66, logrado el año pasado en este mismo torneo, en la pista de Gaeta Huguet. La carrera de hoy fue ganada por la española Agueda Marques con 4:05.30 y otra argentina de buena actuación fue Mariana Borelli, 7a. con 4:13.38. En lo 1.500 metros para hombres (serie 2) el vencedor fue Elie Sindaykengdera (Burundi) con 3:41.64. Y allí el olímpico colombiano Carlos Andrés San Martín terminó 2° con 3:41.99, batiendo el récord de su país que mantenía Gerard Giraldo desde hace ocho años en Lima con 3:42.38. COVID-19 may be starting to slow down in certain states

The United States has had more than 1,000 coronavirus deaths per day for nearly a week, but at least one official said there are signs the pandemic may be slowing.

At least 1,019 Americans died of COVID-19 Friday; that figure comes on top of 1,140 fatalities Thursday; 1,135 Wednesday and 1,141 Tuesday, according to reports.

The staggering stats are being bumped up by the nation’s hardest hit areas in the South and West, but Dr. Deborah Birx noted there are indications the worst may be over in places like California, Arizona, Florida and Texas.

“We’re already starting to see some plateauing in these critically four states that have really suffered under the last four weeks,” Birx told NBC News.

New York continued to see progress in its fight against the virus, Gov. Cuomo said Saturday, with just 646 hospitalizations Friday, the lowest since March 18.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Texas bar owners vowed to reopen Saturday in violation of a June state order put in place as the coronavirus began to surge there.

Some 800 barkeeps pledged to defy Gov. Gregg Abbott’s order and participate in a “Freedom Fest,” according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Organizer and Fort Worth bar owner Chris Polone told the newspaper he wants the state to allow bars to operate with safety measures in place.

“If you can get every single bar to stand up in solidarity, well, that’s a statement that won’t be ignored,” Polone said.

Watering holes taking part have to follow safety protocols including requiring patrons to wear face masks.

In Hawaii, Instagram influencer Mika Salamanca was arrested for breaking the state’s 14 day quarantine rule.

Salamanca, 20, who arrived in Hawaii from the Philippines but is originally from Alabama, was seen on video dancing in a store and eating out.

There was good news for Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who said Saturday he tested negative for the virus after being under quarantine since July 7.

“BOM DIA A TODOS” — “Good morning, everyone” — he wrote with a photo of himself at the breakfast table, grinning over a packet of hydroxychloroquine.

And while nearly 40 countries have seen record daily increases in virus cases, according to a Reuters tally, one coastal town in Spain earned kudos for social distancing.

“Gracias,” police in Chipiona, about 90 minutes south of Seville, wrote on Facebook alongside a photo of hundreds of neatly spaced out beachgoers.

From Colonial to Contemporary at the Colville Gallery Summer Auction in Hobart

Wandering through the large colonial art collection at the Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum, one is immediately assured of its gravitas and sense of history. Some of Australia’s most significant paintings reside here, including Benjamin Duterreau’s “The Conciliation” from 1840.

Tasmania has long been a natural magnet for artists, from John Glover through Tom Roberts and on to Fiona Hall today. John Glover’s Tasmanian landscapes dating back to the 1840s never fail to impress wherever they are shown, but seeing them in their home surroundings, they always appear that much more impressive in my view. Early vistas of Hobart appear equally commanding, with works by Henry Gritten, Knut Bull and Eugene von Guerard on display.

The latter’s “View of Hobart Town, with Mount Wellington in the Background”, 1856, represents the very best in Australian colonial art. Unsurprisingly, it sold for over $1.5 million at a Menzies sale in June 2016, and is now generously on loan to TMAG to sit amongst other worthy works from collectors Elias and Colleen Jreissati.

Wandering the streets of Battery Point and Salamanca, we are surrounded by grand colonial buildings like in no other state. Its colonial art has given way to a burgeoning commercial art scene, including long established Despard Gallery, Bett Gallery and more recent galleries like Colville Gallery and artist-run initiatives such as Inka Gallery at the Salamanca Arts Centre.

David Walsh’s Mona (Museum of the Old and New) of course has made Hobart global must-visit art destination.

House prices have risen significantly in recent times, and with Hobart residents perhaps feeling wealthier, the purchase of art is more likely to be on the agenda.

This may well be aided by Tasmania’s collect art purchase scheme, which enables buyers to purchase contemporary art from commercial Tasmanian art galleries with a 12 months interest-free loan for works up to $8,500.

Apart from the support for the retail trade, there is now also more interest in the secondary art market, as Colville Gallery has organised fine art auctions three times a year since 2016 in their premises in Salamanca Place in Hobart. Their summer auction was held just on 24 February, with a bustling crowd of more than 40 people in the room, as well as phone and internet bidders, eager for auctioneer and gallery owner Trudi Curtis to get her gavel into gear.

Though Colville Gallery is a contemporary art space, their fine art auctions appear to be a great opportunity to cross-pollinate with a mix of the more historical art, art from “mainland” contemporary artists and that of contemporary Tasmanian artists, which made up close to half of the 98 lots on offer.

Boy with Red Fish (lot 1) by Tasmanian artist Zsuzsa Kollo who is represented by Colville Gallery, sold for $1,650 hammer price on $600-800 hopes.

Meanwhile, leading mainland Australian artist Elisabeth Cummings’ Bush Study (lot 2) sold for $1,800 hp on estimates of $2,000-3,000.

With a hark back to the colonial, more Sydney than Hobart, Conrad Martens’ Lumley (lot 3), a pencil drawing from 1836, sold for $1,000 hp to a room bidder. However a work attributed to John Glover, Castle Landscape (lot 4), failed to fire and passed in on $4,000-5,000 expectations.

Institutional favourite Mike Parr’s work is always difficult to sell in the auction room, however, Trudi Curtis sold two of the 4 that were on offer. Self Portrait (lot 8) sold for $2,200 hp, whilst Animal (lot 19), sold for $1,800 hp.

Two paintings by perhaps Tasmania’s other best-known painter, Haughton Forrest, were of  great interest: Mount Wellington (lot 9), the cover lot estimated at $15,000-18,000, was keenly contested with a lady room bidder losing out to a phone bidder when the hammer fell at $18,500 hp.

The lady bidder however didn’t miss out completely, managing to secure the smaller but also attractive Lighthouse Yacht (Ferry) (lot 14) for $4,500 hp on estimates of $4,000-6,000.

Other popular paintings at the auction were Pro Hart’s Bush Races (lot 28), estimated at $3,000-5,000 and selling for $3,900 hp, Ken Done’s Reflections (lot 31), sold for $4,400 hp on hopes of $3,000-4,000 and Ann Thomson’s Discovery (lot 27) selling for $3,800 estimated at $3,000-5,000.

It is impressive to see so many Tasmanian artists supported in the secondary market in this way and shows how the commercial gallery can work together with the auction room.

Taajuudella 1098 kHz tuli Galician ohjelmaa (lienee Lugon kautta). Yllätys oli silti suuri kun RAI:n jyräsi COPE Vigo 900 kHz, aluksi Galician ohjelmalla ja myöhemmin omilla uutisillaankin.

Tässä vaiheessa myös jenkkikeli oli herännyt muutaman päivän välikuoleman jälkeen (en edes avannut radiota pariin päivään, vaan keskityin kokonaan jouluvalmisteluihin). Asemia kuului lähinnä tässä QTH:ssa hyvin harvinaisesta Newfoundlandin kolkasta. Taajuuksista oli auki 930 (vaisun CJCA:n rinnalla myös selvä kantriasema), 750 joka kuulosti vahvasti CBC:ltä, ja 800 kHz joka soitteli musiikkia. Vaikka taajuudella on runsaasti musiikkiasemia, tämä harvinaisemman kolkan kuuluminen loi uskoa, että kyseessä on oltava VOWR. IDiä sai vartoa 40 minuuttia, sillä kuulutuksia tuli ohjelmassa varsin kitsaasti. Verrattain pitkän kuunteluaikani ansiosta juontaja äityi kehumaan jo heidän asemaansa juuri minun suosikkiasemakseni “your favourite radio station V-O-W-R”.

Päivälenkki muuttui antennin tarkistusmatkaksi. Jenkkilangan alkupää oli ok, mutta toinen yhdistetty PHL/Aasia/LaPlata/G/HOL/Iberia -lanka oli katkennut matalasta kohdasta. lankalinjan kääntymisestä päätellen sarvipää siihen oli kompuroinut, tai sitten vain lumen painosta venyessään antautunut.

Keleissä mentiin pikemmin Britteihin ja Hollantiin kuin Iberiaan, oli toki ibsujakin seassa. Kympeillä myös pöhinää. COPE Vigokin kuului taas. 0800 UTC SAQ Grimeton Radio lähetti joulutervehdyksen ja sain piipit ensimmäistä kertaa kuuluviin NRD-525:llä. Kaksi 535:sta vaikenivat surutta.

Yökuuntelusessiosta jäi pari uutta asemaa käteen (ja pari vanhaa tuttua saa uusintaraportin). Erikoisen mielenkiintoista oli keli länsirannikolle ennen 01 UTC. Kello oli tuolloin vasta 17-18 paikallista aikaa ja asemilla saattoi olla vielä päivä- tai kriittiset tehot käytössä. Keli kääntyi kuitenkin nopeasti Manitobaan ja Ontarioon. Lopulta asemat alkoivat heikkenemään 03 UTC jälkeen. Piti ottaa vain parin tunnin torkut, mutta uni vei voiton. Aamu oli ilmeisesti ollut kuitenkin heikonpuoleinen. Läpi päivän jenkkejä, mutta bandi on aika häiriöinen ja signaalit heikohkoja. Keli kuitenkin kohenemaan päin?

Newfoundlandin asemia voimakkaasti, mikä on aika erikoista näillä leveyksillä. SERreillä oli lokaalia ainakin 0620 UTC (Asturiasin IDille en harmiksi ehtinyt mukaan, mutta ohjelma oli selvästi omaa). Yllättäen myös RNE-asemat lähettivät omat uutisensa 0625 UTC. Olisi melkein pitänyt kokeilla joulupäivänäkin näitä! 1026 kHz on yleensä brittien vaivaama, mutta tänään taajuudella oli pelkkiä ibsuja. Edellä mainittu Asturias jäi vähän harmittamaan (Hoy Por Hoyn IDin aikana kuuntelin Biscayaa 990 kHz ties kuinka monetta kymmenettä kertaa). Session kruunasi kuitenkin SER Radio Salamanca niin ikään taajuudella 1026 kHz. Sitä on harvakseltaan kuultu Lapin (ja Espanjan) ulkopuolella ja nyt se tuli breikin loppupuolella yksinään kuuluttaen myös “Hoy por Hoy Salamanca”.

Täkäläisinä joulunpyhinä voi jatkaa raportointia maihin, joissa pyhien vietto ei ole tekosyynä vastaattomuudelle. Venäjä (ja luultavasti Ukrainakin) rauhoittuvat viettämään joulunpyhiään vasta 1.1.-8.1.2020. TRK Slaviya vastasi nopeasti tapaninpäivänä ja teki myös pienen jutunpätkän sanomalehtensä nettiversioon.

Jenkkikeli oli kohinainen ja asemat tavanomaisia “tykkejä”. Newfoundlandiakin edelleen seassa jonkin verran, kolmannen kerran tällä viikolla (ja tällä kaudella!).

Yöllä tuli testattua n. 0140 UTC bandia, keli ei ollut tuolloin täysin poikki, joten aamulla saattaisi vaikka kuso kulkeakin. Kovin kummoisia jenkkejä ei aamulla kuitenkaan kuulunut. Paras tuli vasta 10-11 UTC, jolloin “La Raza 95.7 fm” idaili taajuudella 1470 kHz. Kyseessä oli siis KMNQ Brooklyn Park MN. Alkuillasta tuli tunnin talvinen ES-avaus, mutta antennit ja radiot olivat talviteloilla ja kuuntelijakin saunan lauteilla. Myöhäisillalla 1386 kHz Tianjin PBS:n hyvä kuuluminen kieli mahdollisista seuraavan aamun jenkkikeleistä.

Jonkun verran jenkkejä kuuluikin, parhaiten 07-08 UTC välillä, jolloin keli osui Ontarion seudulle ainakin täällä, mutta jo 08 UTC länsirannikon tykit alkoivat jyräämään. Illalla pitkästä aikaa piraattibandilla. Kuultuja WKOS 6285 ja Radio Casablanca International lopetti 0002 UTC taajuudella 1640 kHz.
