I'm kind of worried about you guys
Recently I've been revisiting the Frozen franchise after taking somewhat of a sabbatical from it for the longest time, rewatching the movies and shorts, and I am currently going through the Frozen 2 documentary. This was mainly for nostalgia, but I wanted to try and understand the franchise from a more critical, technical perspective, and I've come to some insights that I think are worth sharing.
I already voiced my opinions on the frozen fandom in another post, especially in regards to helsa, but since I've been revisiting the old stomping grounds and reading recent posts, it's been concerning to me the level of emotional distress people were having over the treatment of Hans's character.
Now, from what I've gathered from the "text" itself (the movies and shorts, and the frozen heart novel), and from the documentary, I don't really get the sense that the writers and producers at Walt Disney animation have this vendetta against a single character. I don't think it's that deep. Despite the fact that our corner of the fandom believes that the character of Hans has potential, I can assume that the creative team doesn't really consider him to be anything more than a typical Disney villain.
Now I can't really say anything about the potential "hints" at his future redemption or a possible relationship with Elsa, but from what I understand what goes into the creative process during production, I don't think there is a guiding decree that declares that all Disney merchandising material have these hints. Most likely it is an accumulation of random chance and personal decisions down the production pipeline that have nothing to do with orders from the chain of command.
As much as it was exciting to me to read into stuff like this when I was younger, like the Hans and Elsa dolls getting paired together, for example, I think the logic still stands that currently his character is meant to be perceived negatively. And I don't think that's meant as a personal slight against our side of the fandom, that's just what the text says and what the general audience currently accepts.
I don't know if the creative team or Jennifer Lee has seen all of our posts or discussions, I don't know how they personally feel, but as a writer and an artist I feel that the vocal angry callout posts, fandom infighting, and actual petitions to get people fired over how a story should be written, ones that they might have seen, are especially harmful to the creative process. It's not up to fans how a story should be written, and as much as fans may not agree with certain creative decisions, it is ultimately up to the creators themselves whether they take that input or not.
Like I've said, PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS STUFF SO SERIOUSLY! It's two PG animated musicals that are marketed to little girls! There's a frozen-themed waffle maker! Canon doesn't mean shit! You can play with these ideas and adapt them through other means! Just because it doesn't have the Disney logo slapped on it or has professional CGI animation doesn't mean that your fan fiction or fan art is any less valid or cheapened. And listen, I understand having these feelings; I was disappointed when Hans wasn't in Frozen 2, I was disappointed about how the movie ended, or that Helsa probably wasn't going to become a thing, but eventually I grew to understand that that wasn't up to me. We are not entitled to make the creators do what we want.
We have to have a sense of emotional maturity and media literacy here, not just for this little microcosm of fandom, but for investing in all media in general. There is so much more that goes into the creative production pipeline. It takes a team full of people, hundreds, thousands, that make stories like this work. Scouring the internet for story crumbs and hints and theories is only going to frustrate you more and taking that frustration out on the creative team online isn't going to make your case or help anything. If anything, you're only coming across as kind of intimidating and aggressive, and creators don't really react well to that.
Now listen: I am not trying to police how anyone reacts to a piece of media, I'm not trying to come across as somebody on any sort of moral high ground. I only encourage those who have been disappointed and frustrated to put things into a larger perspective. This is a Disney animated film series marketed at little girls. If they want to bring his character back, that would be great! If they don't, who needs 'em? Please just enjoy what you are able to do with these characters and this story. You certainly don't need validation from the house of mouse.

thank you for sharing this last insight into writing fanfiction. it's my biggest worry whenever I sit down to write anything and it's the thing that makes me scared every time I attempt writing for a new fandom. I fear it paralyzes me a little. It's even made me more critical of other people's work, you know? but I try to enjoy each fic for what they are, even if it's amazing when you find a writer that really gets it like you do.
i'm sorry that this brought up negative thoughts for you, and i wanna encourage you to maybe try to reframe your perspective on that post, and what it's saying about finding character voice and what that even means, bc i don't want anyone to walk out of here feeling down about anything.
That post was in no way a criticism; that post was a celebration of something that makes fic both unique and its own art form. Fic is often disparaged bc a fic writer isn't inventing their own world and is working with other people's characters, and so some folks like to say it's not real writing. The post is about how that kind of work is a skill. It's about how fic is a skill, and how that's a good thing. That post wasn't saying "ugh don't you hate it when the character voice isn't right" it was saying "getting character voices right is a skill and it's awesome."
I have been asked, more than once, for my favorite posts or resources on writing, and so have begun to collect them in a tag so that those folks who are interested in my perspective on my process can read them. me reblogging posts like that isn't me telling people how i think they should do anything, it's me saying "for those of y'all who asked, this is how I do what I do."
None of it is gospel, or intended to be a strict "this is the only way to do things"; every author can, should, must develop their own approach. Disagreement is both welcome, and necessary. We need a variety of perspectives to speak to a variety of people.
I'm certain people have found my stuff ooc, and stopped reading bc of that. I'm positive there's lots of people who aren't reading hof bc they don't like domestic stuff (I typically don't), and I know there's lots and lots of people who aren't reading instinct bc they don't like abo.
That's ok. That's kind of the point.
If I read a fic and I don't like a choice the author has made i close it and go on my way. The author has no responsibility to cater to me; their only job is to write what they want to write. It didn't appeal to me, it will appeal to someone else, c'est la vie. We're allowed to disagree on what "character voice" means; it is, by definition, open to interpretation, and this isn't a death match to determine who is Most Right. There isn't One True Way to write.
I might think something doesn't fit the characters, but that's based on my perspective. It doesn't mean I'm right.
Nothing can appeal to everyone, nothing can be subjectively good in everyone's eyes because that good is subjective, and opinions vary. So we come to the fic buffet and we pick up what we like and we leave what we don't and everyone is satisfied. That's the point. That whatever you are after, you will find it.
You don't have to enjoy every story, especially when there are a lot of stories. It's ok to have preferences. It's ok to know what you like and go in search of that. It's ok to be surprised and find you like something you thought you weren't gonna, or vice versa.
so, when I reblog a post that talks about how developing character voice is a skill, I agree with that! I agree that it's something I spend a lot of time thinking about! But I am aspiring to have the characters in my story reflect the best version of my interpretation of what their voice is. My perspective is the only measuring stick I can use. Someone else will have a different interpretation, and there is no need for them to try to match mine; all they have to do is what they want to do.

Comrades? I wanna query you all to add a couple of suggestions of your own because I got hired for a regular job coming tomorrow. So I was curious to gather community suggestions as to process them on a weekly basis (writing & scheduling many posts on weekends and basically developing my audience further, a bit outwards of my usual comfort zone too)
I still got my previous many ones but right now, I just want to see what you would prefer as I feel like I should dive deeper onto original & fandom content that's more typical of people all around here. I don't compromise my other ideas so no worries, simply asking for input and feedback of yours all truly.
Sorry and don't mind my ping, I wanna tag a few users to specifically get their honest opinions up there: @makorays @cypopps @thecommunistdm-blog @adri-the-alien @lunar-the-wolf @reversetimelord @goldenwarefox @bell-of-light
The rest of you all are still welcome to write up anything constructive, after all I still have some muddy controversial matters to change up.
Take care my sweeties and cya soon.

Stance on LGBTQ+ things: Totally am part of it and as such I am enjoying each and every wholesome thing that occurs in this wide community for as far as I am aware of. Still humane enough to debate reasonably each side of the arguments and go towards a better future for the many sapients inhabiting existence.
Stance on spirituality: I like it much as I explore new possibilities of what can be, still balance to be made between the two mindset models (rationality and esoterism) as they are NOT mutually exclusive AND even rather complementary. But most issues come from the carthesian radical point. Enjoy your ride into subliminals!
Stance on Libre software and everything FOSS: Totally worth it, there are ofc good things that can come from other profiteering models but I put emphasis more onto Libre for a quite a few reasons both my own and for overall culture.
Portfolio of creative projects I finished: UPCOMING.
Where do you see yourself in five years?: Writing technical documentation, blogging & illustrating and composing multimedia work, printing and collaging media for promotional content, crafting public domain assets and script component libraries, graphic design & video editing of edutaining content, animating explainers, programming explorable explanations, research old technologies for posterity and lively use recycling, maintain a local technological history museum, produce accurate & original analog media materials for films games and books, write modular stories that can be edited around like software toys, record document and update older (computing, operating or whatever workflow) systems for longevity and experimentations...

Message answering time!
@unluckiestwrench asked:
Ever think of starting a Discord for the TFB community?
I haven't, mostly because Discord isn't something I've had a lot of experience with. I know a number of others have started various tickling-related servers, but I haven't sought any of them out or know if they're still running. (I'm happy to share info if anyone knows of any!) I do have Discord, though – you can find me at strings#9017.
Anonymous asked:
😊 how are you doing today? - 🦋
I'm doing very nicely, thank you! And I was doing nicely back when you asked, too (like eight weeks ago). Just haven't been prioritizing Tumblr for a bit. I've been trying to make progress through my watchlist backlog, which has included a lot of Lucifer, Critical Role, and Star Trek.
Anonymous asked:
Hey strings, you should do more art!! You're really really talented and you should draw more on your blog outside of tickletober!! I know I'd heart each one because oh my God your art is just so cute and flustering-💜
Thank you! I had fun doing all the Tickletober pieces (masterlist here). Art makes the rounds so much more easily than fic; the top note-grabbers in that batch easily outperformed my typical note count by 10x. I do have some stray ideas floating around for other artwork, though writing is still where my passion lies so don't expect me to stop anytime soon. :)
(All my drawings are filed under #strings does art.)
Anonymous asked:
would you make tickling pictures on an animated movie?
Animation is beyond my current skills, I'm afraid!
Anonymous asked:
Your t artwork is incredible!!! I love the waist/fingers post
Thanks! I think the one you're referring to is this death-spot piece? I love it, too. :)
Anonymous asked:
I don't know if you've got anything like this before but. Female or genderfluid gabriel × male to female trans Sam. Maybe as a Victorian AU or an AU where one of them is a ghost that haunts the other's house that other folks have warned to be haunted.
Interesting premise! I support genderfluid angels and trans!Sam. :) This doesn't quite spark my muse, but I'll keep it filed among my prompts!
(Now we're getting into the really old stuff, sent months and months ago, sorry!)
Anonymous asked:
here I am sitting in class trying to do my work when the the image pops into my brain - stoic, season 4 Cas being tickled to the ground by both Dean and Sam and then just laying there, giggling adorably because wow that was fun. now I can't focus on anything but that
Yeeeeessss! (Hope you eventually got your classwork done!)
Anonymous asked:
imagine dean getting hit by a spell that makes him get hit with ticklish shocks every 3 minutes and he KNOWS they're coming but he can't do anything to stop them
Get that boy with anticipation! Bonus points for having someone to hold onto and bury his giggles in. ;)
@lex-the-mockingbird asked:
Am I the only one with a solid craving for ticklish Dean headcanons? And just- Destiel Headcanons because oh my god they're just so precious and amazing💜
They are, aren't they! Many headcanons to be had over at the #headcanons tag. :)
Anonymous asked:
OKAY BUT Dean helping Cas put sunscreen on his back and Cas giggling because his back is so ticklish and Dean KNOWS it
I don't make the rules but this is true.
...okay, I do make my own rules. And I'd still declare this true.
waywardpenguinunknown asked:
I know that people love 'lee Misha/Cas a lot, but 'ler Misha/Cas has me feeling some type of way Just the smirks and hums and teasing grins, not to mention the fact that Cas has like a /crazy/ amount of power, you wouldn't be getting out anytime soon;) So yes, I do love 'lee Misha or Cas, but they can be my 'ler anyday(or Jensens/Dean's;)) Just some thoughts for you (P.s, is there gonna be a part 4 to wordless interruptions?💯👌🏼)
Holy moly, I found this musty message languishing at the bottom of my inbox from 2016. Yikes. The asker has since deactivated their blog, even. 😬 I don't know if you're still stalking around here under a different pseudonym but I promise I wasn't ignoring you on purpose! I agree with you wholeheartedly, here.
Wordless Interruptions (#series: wordless interruptions) topped out at three parts, but there's been lots of #ler!Cas since then in a bunch of other work, mine and others!
This concludes our regularly-scheduled inbox purge.

Honestly, I just found the song to be distasteful. It is a combination of me going, 1) I don't like Taylor Swift's music anymore and haven't since it became repetitive and empty to me, and 2) there is symbolism in the song and in the video that does not sit well with me, intentional or not. It is okay, and good actually, to pick up on implications/stereotypes/etc in media and critique them. 1/3 🔇
I don't think people should be "hating" on her (I think the concept of using energy for that is pointless anyways), but I can tell when I don't like something, and I don't appreciate brushing off a valid observation/worry as "oh, you just don't like the song, ever thought that might be it, because OTHER people like you like it." I get that it can be annoying to see something you disagree with. Still, trying to define someone else's feelings is not okay. 🔇
Just because one person who shares a label with me likes something does not mean that I have to like it, and it does not mean that it is a good thing because a majority said so. I'm sorry if I am coming off as rude in this, as that isn't my intention. I am simply trying to convey honestly how I feel due to what a person I look up to is saying, and that feeling is that my concerns are being treated with disrespect and as unimportant. 🔇
Firstly, you aren’t coming off as rude. At this point, I think it’s safe to say that if anyone has been rude (or, perhaps more accurately, careless) in this whole interaction, it’s me. I’m watching this Taylor Swift situation from a very specific, very jaded perspective.
Not every criticism people have placed against the music video is frivolous.
There are undeniable aspects of classism, of the very sort that I typically rail against more loudly than I have here. It’s not exactly revolutionary in its messaging of, “bigots ain’t shit, shut your fucks.” The celebratory nature of the video is is well represented by the tone of the song but not at all by the lyrics themselves, which are approximately as deep as an empty teacup.
However, for me, it’s impossible to separate this criticism of this piece of queer pop art from the same endless parade of similar criticisms launched against all queer pop art. Narrowly, the same criticisms were--and literally still are--pinned against the songs that post praises: Born This Way and Same Love. More broadly, the same criticisms are painted on every piece of queer music made by anyone who isn’t specifically and exclusively gay that I can think of, going back at least decades.
It’s not until the people involved start dying that the criticisms tend to be replaced with praise, as we’ve seen with the shift from calling Freddie Mercury and David Bowie fake-gay exploitative hacks, to Queer Icons.
More broadly still, things like Steven Universe, a show that features a cast of diverse, queer characters overcoming horrifying totalitarianism through soft skills and deradicalization, made by a bi, trans, jewish person has been lambasted as “pro-nazi propaganda.”
And all of this feeds into the same atmosphere of holding queer art, even the “trashy mainstream pop art” stuff that is supposed to be created at a relatively simple level, that literally has to be made easy to be made accessible, being held to standards that we barely see applied to high art when it’s coming from people working within hegemonic norms.
Let alone pop art.
For me, it’s impossible to look at thousands of people who have no opinion whatsoever on the hundreds of mediocre pop songs that come out every year, suddenly finding themselves with very strong, very negative opinions indeed about how this one song is actually very, very bad for genuine moral reasons that must be shared and policed, and not wonder what it is about this song, which is barely even in the top 40, that is so offensive.
Because there is no violence or hatred. It’s lukewarm. It’s a bowl of oatmeal with out any raisins. Maybe it wasn’t properly stirred so it’s kind of lumpy and unpleasant in spots, but it’s not full of glass shards or anything.
The only reason anyone is upset about it is because it contains a lot of queer messages.
And those messages mean its being held to higher standards than other pieces of completely identical pop art.
And holding queer pop art to higher standards than other pop art means that there will be less queer pop art made, meaning that queer pop artists will get less exposure, less practice, and less fame. It’s a self-destructive process.
What I’m trying to express, and perhaps failing, is that the song is very much criticizeable. It’s not perfect. There are things wrong with it.
But the reason people are criticizing it and not, like, Sucker (Jonas Brothers), which is doing dramatically better in the charts than You Need To Calm Down (Taylor Swift), is because it’s en vogue to be overly critical of queer expression, whereas mediocrity in heterosexual expression gets a complete pass.

Kristie’s Favorite Anime of 2018
Here are the (overall) transcripts of my end of the year audio posts covering my favorite anime experiences of 2018. All audio can be located on podbean but tumblr is typically more receptive to the written word and I’m still learning how to do audio levels and editing; it makes sense if people rather read my goofy thoughts!
So starting from the bottom and working our way up to number one, here is my 2nd favorite anime of 2018:
Tumblr media
A Place Further than the Universe
Directed by Atsuko Ishizuka
From Madhouse studios
Ohhh, my babies. My beautiful daughters!
A Place Further than the Universe is... I don't want to say an unusual show because feel-good anime is a dime a dozen. What's special, I suppose, about A Place Further than the Universe is how drastically it accomplishes being a feel-good series filled with positive affirmations along side being a uniquely and specifically displaced story within it's universally understandable emotionality.
Ugh, god I hated that sentence. OKAY.
Yes, there is what is known as the iyashikei, healing (at this point) genre, which are shows that often times focus on being relaxing slice-of-life series that often times take place within magical worlds where the fantastical is treated as mundane but wondrous - but that's not what Further than the Universe is doing and I'll try my damnedest to explain what I think it is doing and why, but no promises...
A high schooler named Shirase has been saving up a ton of money to travel to Antarctica, which is where her mother disappeared three years ago. Adults and peers a like find her tenacity oddly unpleasant... but when she meets and is helped by the indecisive Mari the two band together to try and make Shirase's completely bonkers dream a reality. They are joined by two other girls, Hinata and Yuzuki, and all four begin a self initiated journey towards engaging, controlling, and nurturing their own lives.
High school girls going on a trip to the Antarctic is quiet the concept, what's impressive is that the series pulls it off - the girl's individual motivations and the struggle they go through to accomplish their goals is grounded and feels earned and believable even within the obvious fantasy and convenient plotting of it all.
A Place Further than the Universe is incredibly intimate. This is a series that, good god, does not hold back in digging deep into the cozy but horrifyingly vulnerable space of storytelling where there is no problem larger than the characters; it's all relative conflict. Which for some viewers is never gonna be of that much interest or draw no matter how well crafted (and this show is supremely well crafted) a story that makes - if there isn't some larger conflict that hangs above characters rather than being trapped within them some people have a hard time paying attention or connecting. And that's fair.
I am not one of those people. I eat this stuff up, I'm more than fine with scaling my ability to engage, to care, down to if someone clips their nails or not! There is nothing so insignificant I can't be lead, when skillfully lead, to emotionally invest in. That's an ability I have, and that's something this show is very, very good at tapping into and pulling out of even it's more reluctant or critical viewership.
The wacky Antarctica bent is the balance to the individualized conflicts each girl faces as well as being the series entire thematic thesis, it's there in the name; "A Place Further than the Universe."
When discussing this kind of relative stake storytelling with my wonderful friend @sonnetscrewdriver she has said that stories like this one are often times about highlighting how every person's life is in essence it's own world, that what may seem trivial or insignificant from the outside can be magnified and brought forth within story telling to be given immense power and significance. And in doing so, in having an individual high school girl's hopes and insecurities broadcasted to be so thoroughly understood and felt by an audience is truly breath taking. And this series does this not just once but four times.
Each and every single one of us may as well be as far as Antarctica, further than the universe, from the person right next to us. From the people we live with, from the people we know as our friends and our family. And we would be without effort, without intentional effort, to not be alone. To be understood. To have friends and to feel accomplishment, to succeed, and be decisive; so much of those things are never completely given.
And that's the bare bones of this series. That's the end of the day take away: Feeling fulfilled, feeling cared for, and loved, and connected is work. It's hard. And even in a group, even on a trip of a lifetime, there will be moments where you're not okay. Even in a wider scope of accomplishing what people said you couldn't, even when you are doing what you set out to do, each of us a world and what matters to us, what we love and what hurts us, is all to the wider universe insignificant. So don't measure by the universe. Don't measure your feelings or your experiences from the outside.
That's a lot to get from a 13 episode anime series isn't it? Fuck yeah it is, but that's why I love it. I'm ten times more preachy than A Place Further than the Universe actually is and not nearly as concise or eloquent (I like hearing the sound of my own voice too much) - but please, if you take anything away from this mess today, I hope it's the knowledge art isn't always about pushing you back or knocking you down, it can be more like a strong embrace; and that's this show. A Place Further than the Universe will make you cry, absolutely, don't get me wrong, but it won't be a Banana Fish way. It's not hurtful, it's cleansing. It's... comforting.
Which brings us around to closing the circle on this series: A Place Further than the Universe doesn't position that the distance between people needs to be merged, that we need to destroy our barriers. We need that distance. We can't wear the lives of others (well, stories come close, but...)
This is an incredibly well made and directed series about four girls who go on an adventure and find themselves and each other, but what's striking to me is how A Place Further than the Universe so concisely expresses that our trails and efforts to reach a new place, to reach out for someone, is no more a comfort then our ability to recognize the ways in which we are apart. Our distances can be a comfort too. We just have to learn how to measure ourselves with ourselves.
