It’s About Time: Rebecca Chambers Is Back!

I’m so happy to see Rebecca Chambers again, even though it’s just in a CGI film. 

However, why in the world is she still wearing the same outfit from the first game she appeared in? When I saw her wearing it in the trailer of Resident Evil: Vendetta I assume it was a flashback. Nope.

Did she keep the outdated outfit in her closet all this years, waiting for the day that she would have a need for it again? If so, it would have been nice if someone had pointed it out, such as Chris, about having that old thing and why not switch it out for one of their newer tactical vests before they got on that hybrid helicopter plane thing. She could’ve been like, ‘no thanks, this thing has been through a lot with me’.

But they didn’t do that. Instead, I think that Capcom figured everyone forgotten who she was and decided to have her wear the same outfit as a reminder. Even without the outfit it’s obviously who she is because she looks the same, just slightly older. Unlike Jill, Chris and sometimes Leon who seem to change looks with every game.

She was born in 1980 and assuming that Resident Evil: Vendetta takes place in 2017 that will make her currently 37 years old. That also means that Leon is 40 years old and Chris is around 46. It’s been about 19 years since we last saw her in Resident Evil Zero (she was a child prodigy which is why she graduated from college at 18 years old and joined S.T.A.R.S.). We learned that she’s been working in an university as a professor, and using her knowledge of medicine to develop possible cures for viruses. It’s nice to see that she didn’t become discourage after what happened to her and actually became a scientist to help combat bio-terrorism. 

I was hoping that since Rebecca was in this that there would be a tiny mention of Billy Coen. Because hoping for him to actually appear in the film would be wishful thinking. I’ve long since given up in him ever appearing in the video games. I would like to know what happened to him. If they ever met again or secretly contacted each other for help? I’ll even take a secret old note from Billy to Rebecca hinting that he’s alive and thankful. Or saying that he owns her one and if she ever needs help, that she can call him to return the favor or something. Anything, really!

Heck, why not make another video game or CGI film about him or include him in it? Would he not want justice (and/or know the real reason) why his team committed the crime and blamed it all on him? Was there more to the story? After all, I always figured that there might have been a connection in his mission with Resident Evil 5 since they do happen in the same place, Africa. 

Sheva was 8 years old when her parents died and later on she learned that they were murder, not killed in an accident at the factory they worked in. The factory was the location of a final test of one of Umbrella's many B.O.W.s. With the help of the government's army (which Billy’s team could’ve been apart of or they were affiliated with Umbrella), Umbrella erased Sheva's village and its inhabitants once the test was completed. 

I’m not sure if the years add up, but it’s a possibility. If it wasn’t that exact incident, it could have been something similar. But who’s to say that didn’t happen also in other areas of Africa (if not around the world because Umbrella seems to have secret bases everywhere)? So it’s not like it’s impossible that there could have been some sort of connection that Billy’s team had with Umbrella or something. 

Or did he just let it be, got a new identity and settle down? He would be 45 years old now, so it’s not like he would break a hip (look at Chris and Leon). There’s always a way to bring him back to the Resident Evil series, be it by choice (like he wants justice, to find out the truth of what happen or feeling the need to right a wrong because he felt guilty for what happen even if it was out of his control) or he gets drag back into it without a choice (since there’s so much bio-terrorism going on -- so there’s always the possibility that he could get caught up in it).

I’m rambling, the point is, it was nice to see Rebecca again and to know what she has been up to after all these years. But it would have been even better if Billy was somewhere in it too. It just felt a bit weird to have Rebecca without Billy.

Usualmente amo las peliculas de CGI de Resident Evil, sin embargo, esta no alcanza el nivel de las entregas anteriores. Es una pelicula vagamente desarrollada. Los personajes no son desarrollados completamente, y no hablo de León, Chris o Rebecca, me refiero especificamente a los enemigos de la pelicula. Estos parecen extrañamente interesantes, pero caen en una liviandad que no te hace percibirlos como amenazas reales. 

Leon Kennedy ya es un chiste repetido, utilizarlo por tercera vez es demasiado. Me hubiese gustado que Leon o Chris fuesen sacados de esa idea del macho con exceso de testosterona y esteroides. En esta entrega siguen quedando como los machos autocompasivos que no pueden superar recuerdos del pasado y lo unico que pueden hacer el alcoholizarse. Una idea ya explotada por Resident Evil 6.

Rebecca Chambers viene a balancear esta necesidad de fuerza bruta con inteligencia. Es presentada como una mujer inteligente, madura y atrevida. Lo cual muestra la evolución de ese personaje desde sus primeras apariciones en Resident Evil 0 hasta este punto. Que haya desarrollado la cura al Virus A es realmente excepcional. ¿Quién más lo podría haber echo mejor?. Yo creo que nadie. 

Es extraña la presentación de Glenn Arias, es un maniatico que quiere desatar el virus A en Nueva York para vengarse del gobierno estadounidense por matar a toda su familia y amigos en el día de su boda. Esta idea de venganza la encuentro un poco vacía e irrisoria. Sin embargo, pensar en la idea de que un bioterrorista pudiese liberar un virus mortal en una ciudad tan densamente poblada como Nueva York me produce escalofríos. 

Además responde una de las dudas que siempre quise resolver. El Virus A puede hacer que los zombies sean manipulables y conserven consciencia de quien es el aliado y cual es el enemigo. Sin embargo, tenemos a nuestra querida Rebecca Chambers que decodifico todo el dramón con el Virus A, para darnos una vacuna que finalmente nos salvara a todos. Ese nexo que hacen con las plagas de Los Iluminados, besos al chef.

Las escenas de accion caen en el ridiculo, pero te mantienen expectante. Leon y Chris casi llegando al orgasmo disparando sus pistolas a los zombies y a cuanto monstruo se le cruze, se ve bastante cool. No es una pelicula buena. Hay partes que me hubiese gustado quitar, debido a que se extendieron innecesariamente haciendo que la pelicula pierda el momentum inicial. La catalogaría como una pelicula para ver mientras hacer otra cosa productiva.

Pd: Leon y Chris se ven más guapos que nunca en esta entrega. Leon se ve más maduro, pero más torpe. Chris se ve con más esteroides pero más sensible. Harían una buena pareja, ojala se cumpla mi sueño y el proximo año salga alguno de los dos del closet. Espero que sea Chris.

Resident Evil: Vendetta, known as Biohazard: Vendetta (バイオハザード ヴェンデッタ Baiohazādo Vendetta) in Japan, is a 2017 Japanese3D animated action-adventure horror thriller film. It is part of the Resident Evil franchise, set in the same universe as the associated video games (unlike the live action films starring Milla Jovovich). The film features the characters Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy and Rebecca Chambers.[1] It is the third CG movie, after Resident Evil: Degeneration in 2008, followed by Resident Evil: Damnation in 2012, and this film marks the third with Leon as a main character. The film is produced by Marza Animation Planet,[2] written by Makoto Fukami (Psycho-Pass) and directed by Takanori Tsujimoto (The Next Generation: Patlabor, Ultraman X).[3] Takashi Shimizu will serve as executive producer. The film was released in Japan on May 27, 2017,[3] while a limited theatrical showing in United Kingdom took place on June 14, 2017[4] and North America is planned for June 19, 2017. The movie will also be available in North America across digital retailers on June 20 and on Blu-ray and DVD July 18.[5]
