Girlfriend Girlfriend Chapter 123: A Wake Up Call

⚠️ Spoilers Ahead ⚠️

So, that chapter happened. Considering Hiroyuki's previous works like Aho-Girl or The Comic Artist and His Assistants, the author really seems to know how to impress with this story. Is it a parody and harem RomCom? Absolutely, yes. But, Hiroyuki hasn't let that get in the way of providing solid characterization and important moments in regards to young relationships and polygamy, and this chapter really goes the extra mile.

It's not a fluffy look where Naoya can brute force his way into the heart of Saki, but a wakeup call that plays off of his, Nagisa, and Shino's actions from the chapter previous. It's not like Girlfriend Girlfriend hasn't gotten serious before, but this instance really focuses on the negative aspects of polygamy, and how people might react to it.

I really like how they introduce the chapter, because similar to the previous, it's not Saki's comical anger that's painted on her face, or an effort to ignore Naoya. It's the sadness in understanding her feelings and fear in regards to Naoya and their relationship.

And it just keeps building from there. Mirika storms the trio's brainstorming session in regards to Saki and enters into a tirade that completely tips the scales on the girls.

It's a really great moment for Mirika that gives her character some much needed separation and definition alongside the other girls. It's safe to say that Shino and Nagisa have been stealing the show in regards to their ability and interactions with Naoya, so seeing Mirika and Saki get the time they deserve, and the time they need to develop and drive us forward is great. The pair are doing an excellent job of driving a stake between the "happy go lucky" group they were originally a part of, though for different reasons.

Mirika's speech really puts into perspective the situation and how it might make people feel. Naoya says he's attracted to Mirika, and enjoys her company, and essentially everything that defines a romantic interest, but he still has 3 other girls he's been fooling around with.

Is Mirika's approach and understanding a little ridiculous? Yeah. Is it excessive to believe that this many girls are interested in the same boy? Most likely, yeah. But at the same time, that doesn't at all diminish where we are currently because we're already here. If you've made it this far you've accepted those aspects. So seeing it play out like this is really great. It tackles polygamy, high school romance, and the oblivious romantic interest in a single fell swoop. And it nails it. Hiroyuki's not holding Naoya's hand to give him an easy out, he's letting the characters he's created act on their own will and provide drama that feels dramatic, rather than a silly understanding or misconception. Everyone here is neck deep in the relationship and none of them have an easy way out, and they make sure that readers know that.

Shino's knees shook as she tried to keep eye contact with her best friend Saki but it was so hard. It was especially hard with the white-haired girl's hand on Naoya Mukai's door and wearing one of her more risqué night gowns. It was sheer and terminated slightly above below her hips and the pale blue material did not hide the outline of her white panties as well as she hoped. This was NOT going to plan.

"Are you going to tell me this is not what it looks like?" Saki asked, her voice dropping an octave. Another sign that she was not happy. "Like you always do."

"It's not?" Shino offered, her facing heating up especially since there was no belief in her best friend's eyes.

"What are you up to? One of your 'study sessions'. How many times have you tried to sneak into his room? Is trying to sneak kisses when I’m not looking not enough for you?”

"Saki-san."

Nagisa Minase's voice was low but everyone was trained to hear it. The duo turned to see the sleepy, blue-eyed girl standing a few feet away trying to rub the sleep from her eyes.

"Nagisa-chan! I caught Shino...again!" Saki said triumphantly while gesturing.

Shino and Nagisa looked eyes locked and Shino tried to beg with her eyes for help.

"Did you ask her why she was going in?" Nagisa queried softly.

"To put it in! We all know how lewd she is!"

Nagisa gently shook her head making the dark hair sway.

"It is rude to assume something disrespectful of someone."

Saki folded her arms and looked expectantly at her best friend. Slowly, Shino moved her left hand from behind her back and held up a book.

"I...uh...borrowed one of Mukai-kun's light novels without permission and I was trying to sneak back in without him catching me. Thats all Sakisaki!"

Saki snatched the book, her own night gown swaying and flipped through the book pages with a crinkled nose.

"Eww, you read these?"

"I was bored and they looked...interesting." Shino responded with a deepening blush. This was embarrassing.

"You are a lewd pervert, aren't you?" Saki cackled with glee and tossed the book back. "Well, I'll let it pass for now but be a responsible girl and get the books in day light."

"But..."

Saki grinned wide. "What's worse? Getting a pervert book in the daytime or...me catching you again."

"I'll get any future books in the morning."

With that, the red head took off cackling back to the futons that she and Minase had been sharing. Shino feinted returning to her room but saw Nagisa give her the thumbs up before vanishing with her.

Silently, Shino opened Naoya’s door and glided in sliding it shut.

"Shino-chan!" Naoya hissed way too loudly from the bed. His head was the only thing showing from under the covers.

"Was that Saki-chan?" He asked worried.

"Yeah, she caught me," Shino gripped waving the book. "But the decoy worked. Nagisa-kun is going to get her back to sleep."

"Good!"

"It was humiliating. Now she thinks I'm into tentacles."

"I told you the book would work," he grinned. "Glad I grabbed it at the store."

Naoya threw back his blanket showing he was wearing his pajamas too but also uncovered the giant wicker basket he had hidden behind pillows.

With her other hand, Shino held out the grocery bag that Saki had not spotted and poured the little packages out on the bed.

"Yes!" Naoya said grabbing them and placing them around the other gifts the rest of the girls had gotten Saki.

There were the gummies from Shino, the gift cards to her favorite game from Rika, Nagisa had baked Saki's favorite bread rolls, and Naoya had added a necklace he had saved up for.

The young man and his girlfriends wanted to make sure the woman who gave them all a chance was treated like royalty tomorrow. Everyone deserved a good birthday and they were going to make sure she has it even if it meant Saki thought Shino was into tentacles.

Mirika growled as she stared at her phone. Watching her as she cooked dinner, Nagisa bit her lip and wrung her hands. She was a bit nervous to bother the girl when she was riled up, but the better part of her wanted to do her best to keep everyone’s spirits up. “What’s wrong, Mirika-san?”

Mirika turned toward her with crazed eyes. “I can’t go live and tell everyone I’m being four-timed. What am I going to do?”

Nagisa furrowed her brow. Personally, she didn’t care whatsoever about letting someone know the truth, but this involved Mirika’s online fame. “Why do you have to announce it?”

“How stupid are you?” Mirika spat. “I already told everyone I gave up on the guy I’m in love with. Plus, we’re all living together. It wouldn’t take long before each of you ends up shown on-stream, one way or another.”

“Oh,” Nagisa said quietly. That made sense. “It’s not such a bad thing, though, is it?”

Mirika gave an ugly laugh. “I mean, now that I’m doing it, I’ll admit it isn’t as bad as I imagined. But for my reputation, it’s definitely bad. I might as well just delete my account right now.”

“Don’t call it four-timing.”

“Yeah? And call it what, then?”

“Call it…” Nagisa’s voice trailed off as she was left without an answer. She knew there had to be one, though. “I don’t know, but I’ll find out!” She made a fist in determination. She didn’t think there was anything wrong with their situation and she was sure that there had to be other people out there who thought the same way.

About an hour later, Nagisa finally set her phone down and removed the pot roast she had left on the warm setting inside the oven. Silently, she dished out some food for the five of them. After doing so, she called out, “Guys, dinner’s ready! I also have some good news!”

Naoya came up and hugged her lightly. “Thanks, it smells delicious.”

He had gotten a bit more touchy now that things had finally settled down between the five of them this last week, but Nagisa still found herself blushing at the contact. She grinned and sat down in the remaining seat at the table.

“Did you figure something out?” Mirika asked before pushing a spoonful into her mouth.

“Yep!” she chirped. Turning to Saki, she said, “Naoya isn’t four-timing us at all.” Saki opened her mouth, but Nagisa continued before she could say anything. “He is in a polyamorous relationship with us.” Again, Nagisa spoke before Saki could. “Polyamorous relationships are consensual and can work however the group agrees on.”

Mirika hummed. “I suppose that does sound better than that I’m being four-timed.”

Nagisa nodded. “Just tell the stream that you are in a consensual polyamorous relationship and leave it at that.”

“Huh. I don’t know…I’ll figure something out.”

“Wait.” Naoya blinked. “So, you mean there are other guys dating four girls?”

Shino gave him a disappointed look. “Is that all you care about?”

He floundered. “I mean…”

Nagisa giggled. “I guess so. But that’s not all. Some people date two people who are also dating each other, and some people even date two people who also date two entirely different people.”

Saki crossed her arms. “There’s no way that’s true. Why would anyone agree to that?”

Mirika smirked. “Like how you agreed to four-timing?”

Saki gasped. “T–that’s different.”

“Oh, yeah, because you love Naoya soo much.”

Saki pointed a finger at her. “You agreed to this, too.”

Mirika shrugged. “You’re not wrong. But you gave in without any bite whatsoever.”

Saki glared.

Worried a fight might ensue, Nagisa spoke up again. “Some people just fall in love with multiple people, like Naoya did. Free love, and all that.” The idea of loving freely made her chest warm.

Saki’s glare turned into a frown. “Naoya has got to be a special case, though. How can anyone love more than one person? How can you give so much energy and emotion?”

Shino let out a sigh. “I don’t know. I think I can understand it.”

“You do?”

Shina smiled sweetly. “I mean, I love you too, don’t I?”

A suspicious blush appeared on Saki’s cheeks. Nagisa had been noticing it more and more lately. It made her look really pretty. “You aren’t coming onto me now, are you?”

Shino blinked and lifted her hands up defensively. “No! I just meant I can see how someone might be able to feel that way.”

Saki laughed. “Of course! I mean, we all love our parents.”

Naoya shook his head. “This has nothing to do with that. I love each of you, but it isn’t like the love I have for my parents at all.”

Saki didn’t seem to appreciate that comment. “Friends then! We love our friends.”

Naoya shook his head. “I don’t think I have loved any friend other than you, Saki-chan.”

Her mouth gaped. “You can’t be implying that Shino and I–That we–” She began swaying as if she might faint.

Next to her, Nagisa caught her in her arms. “It’s alright, Saki. None of us care either way.”

“Ahh.” The noise she made was depressing. A moment later, the girl bolted upright. “Damn it! Why do you have to smell so good, Nagisa?”

“Huh?” Nagisa blinked at her.

Saki took hold of her shoulders. “Shino I can overlook because she’s my best friend. Of course I want her to be happy and to be around her, but why do I care so much about you, damn it?”

“I–”

“As soon as you cooked me that first meal, I dreaded letting this end. I didn’t want to go without the delicious meals that you cook. But I also liked you. You’re cute and kind and a good person. And you care about Naoya so much. I knew that you could give him more than I could.”

Nagisa shook her head. “That’s not true. You make Naoya the happiest.”

“You all make me the happiest,” Naoya said.

Saki continued, looking at the floor rather than meeting Nagisa’s eyes, “The more time I spent with you, the more I enjoyed being around you. When I ended things, it was because I realized how much competition you are. Anyone would be happy to call you their girlfriend.”

Nagisa sucked in a breath and placed her hand over Saki’s. “I like you, too, Saki. I never said anything because dating Naoya was already more than I could wish for, but I’ve kind of hoped from the beginning that you might want to date me too.”

Saki’s face was hard to read. She didn’t look happy exactly, but she didn’t look unhappy either. “I…” She was silent for an extended moment. “I hate that that makes me extremely happy.”

Not a moment later, Naoya crushed them in a hug. “I’m so happy for you two! My two girlfriends!”

Nagisa’s face felt hot, so she hid it in Naoya’s chest.

“Hey!” Saki protested. “I didn’t agree to anything.”

“You will,” Mirika said haughtily. “We all know you have no backbone whatsoever. I bet you’d even date me if I asked you enough times.”

“Ew, never.”

Everyone laughed at that except for Shino. Nagisa turned to see that she had a bittersweet expression. “Are you okay, Shino?”

“Yeah, I’m okay.” She didn’t sound okay, though.

Saki must have noticed too because she pushed away from Naoya so that she could go over to her. She cradled her friend’s head against her shoulder, running gentle fingers through her hair. “You’re sad.”

Shino shook her head. “I’m happy for you.”

“No, you’re not,” Saki said.

Shino’s eyes welled up. “I just…I didn’t realize until now how much I do love you.”

Saki’s fingers stilled. “Oh.”

“You hate me now, don’t you?”

“No!” Saki exclaimed immediately. She made Shino look at her. “I couldn’t ever hate you. Why do you think I let you date Naoya, silly.”

Shino gave a tiny smile. “Thanks, Saki-Saki.” She gulped. “But, you like Nagisa, not me.”

Saki groaned. “Damn it! If Naoya can four-time, then I can three-time, can’t I?”

Shino stared at her. “You really mean it? You aren’t just saying that because I’m your best friend, right?”

“Uh…” Saki didn’t seem to know how to answer that.

Not bothering to wait for her to formulate an answer, Shino launched herself lips first into Saki. Both girls tumbled backward, landing in a compromising position. For once, no one called out or accused anyone. Instead, Mirika sighed in exasperation, Nagisa smiled happily, and Naoya looked on in lewd surprise. Somehow, Shino’s hand had ended up on Saki’s boob and she didn’t appear to be in a hurry to remove it. Saki’s own hand was holding dangerously close to Shino’s butt. Both of them seemed lost to the world as they kissed.

When Shino finally pulled back, Saki looked dazed and worse for wear. “Sorry,” she said, trying to stand up.

Saki grabbed her wrist. “Yeah,” she said. “I mean it.”

Shino let out a shuddering breath and began to cry.

“What’s wrong?” Saki asked in worry.

Shino let out a giggle. “Nothing, I’m just so happy.”

Saki sighed in relief, then looked away embarrassed. “Could we maybe, do that again?”

Shino giggled again and leaned down.

“Bleh.” Mirika pretended to gag, but Nagisa could tell she was actually happy for them. She was a good person beneath her haughty exterior.

Shyly, Nagisa got up and went over to them on the floor. This time, when the two separated, she tapped Saki on the shoulder. When Saki looked at her, she hesitated. “Uh, could we maybe…”

Saki smiled and tugged her down by her shirt collar. Nagisa melted into the kiss. It was different from kissing Naoya. Softer and somehow kinder. Both made her chest warm and flutter, though. She wondered what it would feel like to kiss them both at the same time.

Naoya whistled. “Does this mean that a fivesome might be possible?”

Saki was up immediately and in front of him. Her foot kicked out straight at his groin. “No way, you pervert!”

Mirika pumped her fist up. “Go Saki! No way in hell am I going to have sex with you girls .”

Nagisa giggled.

Naoya’s voice came out pained. “A foursome, then?”

Nagisa giggled again as she stood up and dusted off her skirt. “I don’t know about me and Shino…”

Shino blushed, standing as well. “Yeah, I don’t know.”

“A threesome, then.”

Saki slammed her hand down on his head. “Pervert.”

Nagisa’s own mind was going there, though. Best she keep her mouth shut, for now at least.

『Tax Heaven 3000』は、アメリカ・ニューヨークに拠点を置くアート制作集団MSCHFが手がけるビジュアルノベルゲーム。本作にてプレイヤーは、少し世間知らずだが何故か所得税については詳しい女の子Irisとデートをする。彼女は、特別な人と出会い、その人の確定申告をすることが夢だという。そしてプレイヤーは、彼女との会話を重ねていくことで、2022年の米国連邦税の確定申告書を実際に作成できるとのこと。開発元MSCHFは、削除前のSteamストアページにて、従来の税務申告手続きは意図的に複雑にされていると主張。また公式サイトでは、既存の申告書作成ソフト「TurboTax」を例に、捕食的で寄生的なボトルネックになっていると指摘し、そのメーカーを政府を影から操る悪徳企業であるとまで述べている。そして、ビデオゲームもソフトウェアの一種であり、『Tax Heaven 3000』はビジュアルノベルとして内国歳入庁に順応する装置であるとした。つまり本作は、本来複雑な確定申告手続きを、ゲームを楽しみながら手軽におこなえるソフトウェアであるということなのだろう。ちなみに、ビジュアルノベルゲームとしてはマルチエンディングにも対応しているとのこと。ただ、本作は配信日を前にSteamから削除された。削除の直前のストアページでは、「Steamが本作を排除しようとしている」との主張が概要欄に記載されていた。このことから、開発元が自ら取り下げたわけではなく、Valveが削除したものと思われる。また開発元は、代わりに公式サイトから本作を入手するよう呼びかけていた。 Valveが本作のSteamでの配信を拒否した理由は不明。開発元も、説明なしに削除されたと訴えている。ただ本作のSteamコミュニティページでは、本作のプレイについて注意を呼びかける投稿が複数投じられていた。というのもゲーム内には、プレイヤーが自身のソーシャルセキュリティナンバー（社会保障番号）の入力を求められる場面があるからだ。本作のトレイラーでは、デート相手のIrisが「あなたの個人的なことをもっと知りたいな。たとえば、ソーシャルセキュリティナンバーとか？」と話しかけてきて、プレイヤーが番号を入力するシーンが紹介されている。実際の確定申告書を作成するためには必要な情報ではあるが、開発元が著名なアート制作集団とはいえ、本作がセキュリティ上信用できるソフトウェアかどうかは分からない。Valveは、そうしたリスクを考慮して本作を削除した可能性がありそうだ。

Saki’s heart pounded. She took in several breaths, trying to calm down but it didn’t work. She was so worked up, it was crazy. She felt more excited watching Naoya kiss his other two girlfriends than she had felt while kissing him. They were so lewd. The deep flush to each of the girls’ cheeks, the wanton expressions on their faces, the way their round breasts pushed into Naoya’s body.

Saki had noticed signs, but she hadn’t wanted to pay attention to them. When Nagisa first started dating Naoya, Saki couldn’t have hated her even if she tried. The girl tried so hard and wanted the best for everyone around her. She was the perfect housewife in every sense of the word. Saki had joked that she wanted to marry her, but beneath the joke was a very real desire. Life was more comfortable and enjoyable in her presence. As much as jealousy swirled in her stomach, Saki would hate to lose Nagisa.

When she had watched Naoya and Nagisa kiss before, she had felt excitement, but she had chalked it up to the thrill of getting caught watching. She had thought she must be into voyeurism. But now that she was watching out in the open, she realized that she was enthralled by the sight of them together.

She wanted them both happy, and she enjoyed seeing it. She also enjoyed seeing the lewdness.

Guess she really was a pervert all along.

She could deal with that. What was harder to deal with was that she was more interested in watching Nagisa than Naoya.

Then there was Shino. The girl had been her best friend for such a long time. Of course, she loved her. She had known this for a long time, but she hadn’t ever thought she’d be looking at her this way . Her mind had started getting messed up after learning just how lewd Shino really was. Normally, she was so quiet and reserved, but when it came to Naoya, she charged forward, taking what she wanted while she could get it.

Saki’s fist curled, determined to follow her lead. “You said I could two-time too if I wanted, right?”

The three of them stopped kissing to look her way. She ducked her head a bit under their gazes. “I wanna try dating Shino and Nagisa-chan too…”

All three of them reacted in surprise. Naoya simply widened his eyes, but the two girls exclaimed in confusion.

“Wait, Saki…” Shino said uncertainly.

Saki’s excitement dissipated into jitters. “I know it’s weird, okay? But I think that I’m actually…bisexual.”

Naoya grinned. “I knew it!”

Saki blinked. “You did?”

“Do you realize how often you stare at Nagisa’s boobs?”

“I do not!” she protested even as she realized it was true. “They’re so big. They’re just out there, you know?”

He leaned forward. “Right? They are just begging to be looked at.”

“Uh…” Nagisa moved her arm over her chest in response to their conversation. “I suppose I’m flattered, but…It’s still embarrassing.” She fidgeted.

“So cute!” Saki exclaimed aloud what she would have previously only thought silently.

“Right!” Naoya cried louder than necessary.

Nagisa looked from one to the other, fidgeting even more. “I don’t know if I like being caught between you two.” She bit her lip. “Or, maybe I would…”

Saki’s brow twitched. “Does that mean you are too?”

Nagisa looked up through long lashes. “I think so…I’ve always really liked you, Saki. I, uh, don’t think I’d mind kissing you.”

To her surprise, that confession was enough to nearly make Saki start salivating. What was she, a dog? She was about to start moving toward the other girl to fulfill the invitation when Shino finally spoke up.

“Saki,” she began in a hushed tone, “I don’t know how to react. You’re my best friend in the whole world. You mean everything to mean. You mean so much that I was willing to give up on Naoya just so that you could be happy. But I’ve never thought of myself as attracted to girls before. I don’t know if I can reciprocate your feelings the way you want me to.”

Saki smiled and reached for Shino’s hand. Her friend let her hold her hand, smiling softly back.

“I get it, Shino. I know I’m asking for a lot. You matter so much to me, so I’m not about to ruin our relationship by pushing things. But, would you be willing to try exploring it? Maybe just holding hands like this?” Saki squeezed her hand. Even that simple touch felt really nice.

Shino bit her lip before pushing herself forward so that she was hugging her. Caught off guard, it took Saki a moment before she wrapped her arms around her. “Of course. This is nice,” Shino admitted.

Saki nodded. It was. Shino smelled like coconut and shea butter.

Nagisa clapped her hands. “I’m so happy for you two.”

Naoya put an arm around her, tucking her into his side. Nagisa leaned her head on his shoulder. They looked really cute.

Saki smiled. For the first time since they began this crazy relationship coaster, everything felt perfectly right.
