What with all the axolotls in the ONIMAI opening?
Well, according to Wikipedia, axolotls are one of the few amphibians who don't undergo metamorphosis, in which they would lose their gills and start living on land. Instead, they remain aquatic and gilled without taking to the land. This is because their body does not produce the proper hormone to undergo metamorphosis.
However, the axolotl can be given artifical hormones and be able to live on land. (THIS PRACTICE IS HIGHLY DISCOURAGED AS THIS COULD RESULT IN DEATH EVEN IN SUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS).
Anyway, similar to giving an axolotls hormones to undergo metamorphosis, Mihari gives Mahiro hormones to undergo the "metamorphosis" of female adolescence and get him used to going outside.
The aquatic form of the axolotl is stuck in the video game world.
However, as soon as we see the land form of the axolotl, we cut to a game-over screen. And we see Mahiro, who is going through his own artificial metamorphosis to become a productive member of society.
Not a perfect analogy, but an interesting one to be honest.

The first episode of Oniichan wa Oshimai! streamed early! One of the things you will notice about the main character Mahiro is that he owns a lot of manga and games.
The manga on the left reads 「ア二マルフレンズ」. This translates to "Animal Friends", and is likely a reference to real life franchise Kemono Friends.
The manga on the right reads 「この見上げた世界を祝福せよ」. This translates to "Bless this world you look up to!". This likely is a reference to the light novel series - Konosuba / God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!
The poster on the top reads "Clovers"
The poster on the bottom reads 「Lazy Cats 黄金作戦」. This translates to "Lazy Cats Golden Tactics". No idea what either is a reference to.
The manga in the front reads 「ももいろライノ」. This (probably) translates to "peach rhino". Again, no idea what this is a reference to, lmao. (Edit: there is a nonzero chance of this being a dick joke lmao)
I'm not actually fluent in Japanese. I only know enough to be able to read hiragana and katakana and plug kanji into Jisho.
Also Studio Bind really decked out Mahiro's room. It's nowhere near as detailed in the manga.
