Its a purple, faux leather braid, with a tiny golden horse shoe dangling from it. He looks a little too happy with himself, the fondness on his face a dead giveaway for what's to come.

"Yep~ me an' Johnny just got 'em. It's like- we're best bros and we both like horses.

So I seen these in the window of some awful pink store at the mall, and I was like: "dude what if I bought us these?" As a joke! But he was actually super into it like- I barely got the receipt before he was puttin' his on! What an idiot~" his eyes stay fixed on the bracelet, probably reliving the memory in its entirety as he recounts it.

"It's not like we'll wear them all the time, can you imagine? Then again what if I see him and he doesnt have it... that would be so embarrassing. But if I take mine off and he doesnt then he might think I hate him or something... fuck I should text him and let him know I cant wear it during my labs, what if I forget it in my coat pocket and it gets lost in the wash?..." a thoughtful pause, though not nearly thoughtful enough when a few blinks brings him back to reality and a face full of Kakyion.

"Anyways, what'd you do today?"

whenever gyro wishes to subject him to something , especially when the older man appears to be any extent of excited about it , kakyoin proceeds with immediate caution . he’d learned this lesson rather quickly following the start of their living arrangement —— gyro zeppeli can be wildly unpredictable , & though he’s generally harmless & far too scatterbrained to scheme up anything genuinely cataclysmic , underestimating the range of his chaotic nature is a fool’s mistake . thus , when he hears a loud string of greetings followed by a call to action , the redhead seizes a necessary opportunity to brace himself before he turns around .

he’d been in his bedroom , meticulously cleaning & organizing his supplies after a full day of painting . he’s not sure if he likes any of what he’s produced today enough to consider inducting it into his portfolio , but perhaps he will video call his mother & request her opinion once the clock strikes an acceptable hour in japan . nevertheless , he hadn’t been working on anything when the blonde had taken it upon himself to burst into his room , & for that , he is grateful . trying to fix a ruined piece is a greater amount of stress than any like catastrophe kakyoin can conceive .

upon finding that his roommate had only wished to show him a bracelet , perhaps obviously , the art student is surprised —— such a state of being is rendered clearly by the round fullness of violet eyes typically calm & slanted . ruby - hued lashes flutter a few times , & then his gaze migrates from the accessory to gyro’s amusingly ( & , though he’d never give the other the pleasure of a verbal admission , rather cutely ) gratified countenance . the explanation of the bracelet’s origin clicks into place like the conclusive piece of a puzzle , causing a knowing air to settle over the younger man’s expression , sharpening his previous display of surprise into a look more conventional of him .

“ you & johnny , huh ?? ” he echoes the golden - tressed man , leaning back in his desk chair & crossing one leg over the other , causing one of his fluffy pink slippers to dangle as it slopes off the arch of his right foot . “ what kind of ‘ joke ’ would that have been , anyway ?? i don’t see what’s so funny about having matching bracelets with someone you care about . ” he figures it has something to do with traditional western masculinity & the way that being affectionate & sentimental is acceptable only when it’s performed as some kind of satire . he wonders if gyro is even fully aware of the implications of that . probably not . “ . . . anyway , that’s pretty cute , gyro . the colour is very pretty , too . what colour is johnny’s ?? blue ?? or , maybe green ?? ” kakyoin’s personal favourite , secret to no one .

while gyro voices his various concerns about the future of his bracelet - wearing endeavours , kakyoin rises from his chair & moves over to his bed , straightening out the cherry - patterned duvet before plopping himself onto its plush surface . he’s still not entirely used to sleeping so high off the ground , but he doesn’t dislike it by any means . he’d almost fallen out of bed a few times , though . almost . “ why wouldn’t you wear them all the time ?? what’s the point of matching if you’re not going to wear it often ?? ” he laughs out the question , trying to convey to the other how ridiculous he’s being without having to say it so explicitly . that got old pretty quickly with gyro . “ don’t be dense . if he was into the idea when you bought the damned thing , he’s probably going to wear it all the time . & since you were the one that suggested it , it would make sense if he expected the same of you . ”

kakyoin had only met johnny joestar a handful of times , & they have yet to actually entertain a proper conversation , as one of them is usually on the way out amid their encounters . even so , he thinks he has a pretty decent grasp on what the other is like , if not by the slivers of moments spent in his presence , then by gyro’s constant chatter about him . he finds himself wondering if johnny can perceive the obvious in relation to how gyro feels about him , & if he’s trying to ease his ‘ friend ’ into it . “ just find somewhere safe to put it when you’re in the lab . that’s what my dad does with his wedding ring , & those stupidly expensive watches he likes to wear . ”

realizing the other man’s attention , as well as the topic of conversation , has shifted to him , the redhead leans back on the heels of his hands , glancing toward today’s paintings propped up in his workspace . it is possible that in turning his face away from gyro , he is attempting to conceal the sudden heat that plumes at his cheeks . “ jojo & i went to the aquarium , & i painted some of the animals there , since i’ve been doing tons of landscapes lately & wanted something different . ” clearing his throat , kakyoin gathers his bearings & faces gyro once more , managing to keep himself composed . “ that took up the whole day . but it went by pretty quickly , ” quicker than i’d have liked it to .

“ i got back here maybe an hour ago , & it’s too late to cook anything . want to go out for dinner ?? ”

It takes him that long just to hold out his arm and unfold his fingers, displaying the little bracelet weaved in green.

“They don’t really come in packs ‘a three an’ this one had a tree on it so I had ta like... rip it apart and switch the charms around but look!!” He jiggles it, twin cherries swinging from the vine. “Not bad eh?”

notwithstanding the obviousness of its answer rendering a reply to gyro’s question unnecessary , the string of words causes kakyoin to look up from his laptop , the bubble of his focus effectively lanced , leaving a polished set of hands hovering over the keyboard mid - sentence . a crimson brow arches with a concoction of curiosity & concern ; typically when his roommate employs that line as his opener , it is due to the fact that the oncoming revelation of his behaviour will exasperate or infuriate the redhead to some degree , & he is attempting to perform an act of preemptive damage control ——— yet , from the moment the other man had approached him & began speaking , kakyoin’s intuition dared to declare the present moment as no such an occasion .

thus , he continues to eye the blonde from where he kneels before the coffee table , an art history essay near to completion displayed on the sleek plane of his computer screen . the mention of fairness puzzles the scarlet - tressed of the two men further , to the extent that he removes his hands from his keyboard entirely & places them somewhat awkwardly atop his thighs as he straightens up upon the pillow bearing his weight . it could be that the wide - eyed scrutiny is posing greater difficulty to gyro in expressing his thoughts , but kakyoin cannot help himself ; his intrigue regarding whatever his roommate is currently on about swells with each awkwardly passing second . when i’m what ?? he wonders , but the inquiry fails to make it past his lips before gyro is talking again , & extending an arm to show the younger man what he bears in hand .

cognitively , everything aligns unambiguously & makes perfect sense . yet , as far an emotional response is concerned , there’s a roadblock ; kakyoin struggles to process it , to understand what he is looking at & what the implication of it is . there’s no question in his mind about his place in gyro’s life & the inverse of that , & there hadn’t been for a long time ——— even so , a younger version of himself , the cripplingly isolated child that watched his peers exchange gifts like the one gyro bears for him now & privately battled tears of frustration at the realization that he may never be the recipient of such a meaningful gesture , claws his way out of the sunken quarters where his memory had been suppressed . violet eyes , distended impossibly wider now , fill with tears , but kakyoin manages to latch onto the windswept veil of his composure before any droplets overflow .

“ this is for me ?? ” he asks , voice so laden with breath that the refined & confident manner in which he usually speaks becomes delicate & airy . much like the query his friend had earlier posed , it requires no answer ; ’tis only an avenue for the younger student to absorb the exchange , to allow his heart a chance to take in the outpouring of amity like a parched sponge . “ . . . i . . . ” attempts kakyoin , suddenly abashedly aware of how foolish he must look , rendered speechless over a woven bracelet . but it’s not the fucking bracelet . it was never about the fucking bracelet .

after clearing his throat & seizing a few moments to chuckle at himself , he shakes his head , the action an expression of accordance with gyro’s sentiments . “ not bad at all , ” he finally answers , thankful that his cadence leaves him smoothly . “ it’s rather cute , actually , ” adds kakyoin , noting where the original charm had clearly been torn out , leaving some stray threads behind where the other had attempted to weave it back together . with the addition of his signature drupe , it gives the little trinket character , makes it one of a kind , suitable for the bond they share .

bearing this in mind , kakyoin raises an arm , offering a relaxed wrist to his roommate & wearing a bright - eyed expression , complete with a smile that fully reveals both of his dimples . “ put it on me , ” he requests , beckoning the other nearer with a sway of his head in the proper direction . “ thank you , gyro . no one’s ever really done something like this for me before , ” explains the redhead . “ i’ll make one for you , too ——— you can wear it on the opposite wrist of the one you got with johnny . it’ll be like both of us are with you , all the time . ”
