The running joke is that most of the other officers gossip about Armitage not having real military combat experience until they see him gouge someone's eyes out in a knife fight.

I'm always so captivated by Armitage’s relationship with femininity. Because anyone who has analyzed his novel presence will note that he is unabashedly feminine, according to general societal standards. He is very particular about cleanliness, is conscious of his appearance & fashion and is inherently nurturing toward children. Some of his mannerisms, such a the way he sits or speaks can be classified as "feminine". ( By societal standards, of course. I personally believe gender, or the absence of it, is what you choose to embrace it as. ) From a character analysis perspective, this is interesting when considering that Brendol( Armitage’s father ) shunned Armitage and even abused him because he was too small or too feminine. All of Armitage’s childhood monsters were men. And even in adulthood, his oppressors are men. So his relationship with masculinity is not a positive one. But mind you, Rae Sloane, who protected him from his father’s abuse, was a significant role model in his life. She founded the First Order after fleeing the battle of Jakku, severely wounded, with Brendol and a five year old Armitage. She was his first impression of a strong leader. And you can see that a lot if his trusted staff members, such a Phasma and officer Bolander, are women. So it seems pretty obvious that Armitage’s relationship with femininity is very positive.

I find the scene where Kylo Ren tells Snoke that he doesn't see Hux's value very amusing. Hux canonically designed several of the simulators in the storm trooper training program, helped designed The Supremacy ( a mega star destroyer & the First Order’s mobile capital ), played a significant part in the Starkiller project & was in charge of the team who created the hyperspace tracking system. Kylo, sir, he may have designed your ship for all we know.

I love it when people assume Armitage is some sort of damsel in distress because of his slight form. When in reality, if someone is messing with his s/o he will strike like a viper.

I love Hux's precise emotional control. His practiced apathy and self control certainly contributed to his rise in the ranks. Along with his skepticism & analytical tendencies. That is also why he is successful when challenging Snoke & Kylo Ren.

πŸ’«Manipulation plots.πŸ’« I would love to delve back into writing/exploring Hux's deeply manipulative side. His technique varies based on whether he is toying with victims, colleagues, etc. And based on his motive & the subject's characteristics/temperament. More often than not, there will be no indication that he's being manipulative. It is hard to differentiate whether he is being genuine or deceptive. Thus consent from my writing partner is very important.

The fact that Sloane says, "I make no excuses and I never apologize", to Piett ( her superior ) while she knows Vader is listening.... explains why Hux sasses Kylo to his face so boldly. He learned to be fearless from her.

During his visit to The Absolution in the Phasma novel, Armitage Hux remarks that he is the highest ranking officer on the ship. Which means he outranks the Admiral that Commands The Absolution and all of the other officers attending the assembly taking place there.
I am certain Hux is not including Kylo Ren ( who is also aboard The Absolution for the assembly ), considering Kylo isn't part of the First Order ranks. But it's interesting to me that Hux is at such an elevated status even though he only bears the title of General. I am guessing this authority is due to his position as Commander/Director of Starkiller alongside being co-commander of The Finalizer.

It is so interesting to write a gay character who has a general disdain toward men because all of the significant male figures during his upbringing abused him. And one who tends to have a negative relationship with sex because touch was always a violent thing. And just has a general disinterest in relationships because his one role model was a severe workaholic. His inherent response to people taking interest in him is manipulation. Thus layers on layers of slowly developed trust are needed for him to have a healthy relationship and, at this point, I am not sure if that is even possible.

I've had discussions with so many people about the First Order ranking system being confusing. And honestly, it's all Hux's fault. The actual ranking system if the First Order is actually very straightforward and more simplistic than the Empire’s system.
squad leader β†’ sergeant β†’ lieutenant β†’ captain β†’ major β†’ colonel β†’ admiral or general depending on whether you are navy or army β†’ grand marshal or allegiant general
There may be sub categories to admiral & general but they are not explicitly disclosed.
And then there is Hux. I'm not surprised that he caused so much confusion. His rank/position is very convoluted. Hux’s title is general but he obviously holds more power than that rank allows. Part of that is because he is essentially the Weapons Director of Starkiller base, which is why he communicates so frequently with Snoke. That's a valid explanation for his heightened authority.
The confusing part is that he is titled "General", and he does control ground troops as a general would, but he is also a commander of the flag ship of a fleet. That responsibility is usually bestowed upon an Admiral. Thus Hux kind of holds both positions? Hux has been vying for the position of Grand Marshall, which gives one command of both military and naval forces. But Snoke refuses to award him the promotion. It's almost as if Snoke gave Hux the responsibility without the actual promotion just to taunt him or keep him in place.

Finn's inner monologue during his first battle in the Jakku village ( in the TFA novel) has me convinced that, though physically he was incredibly efficient, emotionally he was unfit to pass to the next level of the stormtrooper program. But Captain Cardinal ( being soft and compassionate himself ) passed him anyway.
