Directing: Film Techniques and analysis by Raibiger and Hurbis-Cherier.

Chapters 7 and 8 discuss script selection and development. They recommended immediate dismissal of scripts with basic errors, to prioritise emotional response on first read through and then working backwards searching for contrivances in character and plot. They included a useful checklist on pages --- discussing how to scan a script for stereotyping and political leaning which I think is very important.
