A few sniffles were heard by a pair of hyena ears that was walking by, his hands occupied with a basket full of clothes meant to be washed. Ruggie continued on his way deciding to ignore the sound, — judge him if you want, he was a busy guy and didn't have time to deal with someone having a crisis — but realized the cries were getting louder each step. Once he made a turn he finally stumbled upon the source of such noise.
Sitting on the ground, holding her legs tightly and trembling was Daisy, the prefect Ruggie had come to… like, he guessed, in these past two days she's stayed at Savanaclaw. He blinked in confusion, the mere sight of her crying seeming out of character as he always saw her with a smile and a fire in her eyes. Where before she stood strong and courageous by fighting her fears in a battle against Leona by his side, now she looked… small, frail and absolutely terrified of God knows what.
Ruggie didn't know what to say so he simply cleared his throat, making the girl flinch and dry her tears the moment she realized someone was there.
“I-I’m sorry, don't mind me.” She quickly said, but upon realizing it was Ruggie, a part of her seemed to relax. “Oh, it's… you.”
“Yeah, me.” Ruggie said, a bit unsure. “Are you… alright?” A stupid question, he knows, but what else was he supposed to say?
“Yes, I'm just… I guess I'm angry.”
“Angry? You're crying rivers because you're angry?” Ruggie lifted an eyebrow, confused and a bit skeptical.
“Well, I– I guess it's more frustration. I just- just don't know how to get it out so… I started crying without realizing.” Daisy explained, wiping some other tears away. “Please just don't tell anyone you saw me like this. I can pay you lunch in exchange if you wish.”
“I wasn't gonna say anything regardless, but who am I to refuse free lunch?” He laughed that trademark laugh of his and Daisy giggled. Ruggie widened his smile, happy to know he somehow was able to lift her spirits at least a bit.
The hyena beastmen put the basket of clothes down, crouching in front of his temporary dorm member, and tilting his head.
“So, what's up?”
“What?”
“Why are you frustrated?”
Daisy seemed surprised by the question, blinking a few times to make sure she wasn't just imagining things.
“Why… why do you wanna know?”
That was a good question. Ruggie didn't have an answer for that, he just wanted to know, he wanted to know why she was so angry so he could help her cheer up. Why did he want to do so? Oh, don't ask, that was an even bigger question for him.
He just didn't like seeing her like this. Not the Daisy he knew.
“You look defeated.” He said, frowning, making Daisy look away in embarrassment. “It annoys me seeing the girl who basically saved my life and took care of me like this. I don't wanna be in debt with anyone, but specially not to anyone who looks like such a loser.”
“Hey, now!”
“I said ‘looks like’, not ‘is’.” He pointed out. “Is it because of Azul?”
Daisy groaned. “It's Azul, it's Ramshackle, it's the Leech twins preventing me from getting that dang photo, it's- ugh.” She massaged her temples, stress starting to build up once again. “I'm just… so frustrated. I was happy with Grimmy at Ramshackle but now… this stupid guy wants to steal it from me. The only place I'm happy at.” She lets out. The girl lifted her head again, her eyes making contact with Ruggie's attentive gaze, and she sighed. “Sorry, I'll… stop feeling sorry for myself and get to work.”
“You better, crying about it ain't gonna fix anything.” Ruggie said, matter of factly, and Daisy felt a knife through her heart. Afterwards though, she felt warm fingers against the skin of her cheek, caressing her face softly and carefully. “You can't stay defeated like this. Where's that determination you had during the Spelldrive fiasco, huh?” He smiled and Daisy returned it, though it was smaller, weaker, more timid. Her cheeks were warming up. “Come on, you're better than this. And to prove it…”
His other hand made its way to her other cheek, Ruggie was getting closer with each second and Daisy started freaking out. Unsure of what to do, the girl closed her eyes, her hands clutching the step of the stairs she was seated on, but instead of feeling anything against her lips or face, nothing came, so she slowly opened her eyes, seeing Ruggie holding a pair of earrings.
Her pair of earrings.
“Hey! These are mine!”
“Yes, yes, I'm aware.” He got up, putting the earrings in his pocket as he smirked at her. “My, my, were you expecting something else? You closed your eyes and everything.”
Daisy's face went red in shame and embarrassment and she struggled to speak. Ruggie laughed at her reaction, walking towards his basket and picking it up again.
“I'll return these to you once you leave Savanaclaw after getting Azul his picture.”
“Ruggie, please. They were my mother's.” Daisy got up, standing in front of him and preventing him from walking. “They're the only thing I have from her. Please.”
Ruggie stayed quiet for a moment, his face serious this time. “And because of that I promise to take good care of them.” Suddenly, he gave her a head pat, his smile returning, but it was much softer this time, something that put Daisy’s heart at ease. “You’ll figure it out, prefect. You outsmarted Leona once, of course you’ll be able to outsmart Azul.” Then, he flickered her forehead lightly, starting to walk away. “See ya around, flower.”
And with that Daisy was alone again. She was still angry, but now she was much more at ease, and had even more motivation to keep on going. Ruggie was right, she survived until now, someone like Azul wouldn't ruin her home! She had to deal with worst before!
She was getting that picture and winning against Azul, no matter what.

“Didn't I tell you to sit down?” The pirate asked, finally finishing taking his coat and hat off so they wouldn't get wet. He rushed to the mermaid’s side, — well, not anymore, he guessed — picking her off the ground and helping her up, looking away from her body. “Sheesh… come on, I'll help you into the tub. But cover yourself while you get there.”
As he walked, still looking ahead rather than at the naked girl beside him, he managed to get her in the tub filled with water.
“I’m sorry… I'm not used to… well, walking.” The ex-mermaid explained, touching her legs underneath the water as Ruggie turned around to get the stuff for her bath. “It's so much different than swimming with my fin…”
“Well, it should be.” Ruggie said as he got the bottles of shampoo and conditioner, along with a soap. “Turn around, I'll help you with cleaning your hair. You'll scrub yourself with the soap tho, I'm not touching you.” he sits down on a nearby bench as the girl turned around, hugging her new legs. “And for the sevens do not get out of the water.”
“Why?” She asked, and for a moment Ruggie thought she was joking because there was no way she was this naive. He rolled his eyes the moment he realized that no she was indeed very serious.
“I don't know how it is underwater since you guys don't have… you know.” she lifted an eyebrow but he was not about to explain himself on that. He grabbed the shampoo and started cleaning her hair, the girl letting a few giggles out at the sensation of his fingers on her scalp. “-but a guy like me and a girl like you shouldn't be naked around each other.”
“A guy like you?”
“I'm not your family member, let alone your lover.” He said as he gently started taking off the shampoo with water from the tub, telling her to close her eyes in the process. “it's not right for me to see you like this. I'm only doing this because you’d probably hurt your eyes or be confused by the products.” He gives her a smirk after he’s done with the shampoo and she opens her eyes. “But I hope you do know this will cost ya.”
“Oh- yes… that's the pirate way, I assume.” The girl sighed, a bit disappointed by that. But then again, at the end of the day she was in a pirate crew now, and nothing came for free from pirates.
Ruggie started spreading the conditioner through her blond strands, realizing just how long they were. He quickly glanced at the girl, her face specifically, noticing just how beautiful she truly was… well, she was a mermaid, he guessed they were meant to be beautiful.
Still, her beauty seemed to not only come from her appearance, but from the way she carried herself, from the way she spoke, and from the way she exhaled curiosity by every little thing Ruggie showed her about human life.
He cleared his throat, ignoring the blush on his cheeks.
“So uh… your name? I’ve been calling you “mermaid” and “girl” this whole time.”
“Eléa.”
He stared at her and blinked. It was short, pretty, but for some reason Ruggie wasn't sure he’d be able to pronounce it… the girl seemed to notice it and giggled, truly music to Ruggie’s ears.
“You may call me whatever you like. I know my name is quite uncommon up here.”
“Whatever I like huh…” he spilled water on her head once again, getting rid of the conditioner on her hair, getting the soap right after. “Well… do you like flowers?”
“Flowers?” She tilted her head as Ruggie started making foam with the soap, spreading it throughout Eléa’s face. “I’m- I'm unsure if I’ve seen one-” she tried to talk before he chuckled and grabbed some water to take the foam off of her face.
“They're pretty little plants that grow on the ground. You should see one once we land somewhere.” He said, scrubbing her neck without giving it much thought. “There's this one plant that I like, it's called daisy. it's tiny and pretty, and is also edible. It kinda reminds me of you.”
“E-edible…?” Eléa questioned, a bit confused by the comment, but Ruggie didn't give it much thought as he went to scrub her shoulders and arms.
“Why don't I call you that? Daisy. It has a nice ring to it, don't ya think?” He smiled at her and Daisy did the same, seemingly happy with the new nickname she was given.
“...yes. I quite like it as well.” She intertwined their fingers as Ruggie had reached her hand with the soap, and by this motion he realized what he had started doing.
He quickly got up, giving her the soap in a hurry, totally flustered. What was he thinking?? Actually, screw that, he wasn't thinking at all! If she didn't intertwine their fingers he would never have noticed that he had started scrubbing her body… what was wrong with him?
“A-anyways, scrub your whole body with the soap. I-I’ll ask Jeanne to help you getting dressed. See you later, Daisy.”
“Wait-” the ex-mermaid was cut off by the sound of the door closing. She furrowed her eyebrows and sighed, starting to scrub herself. “I wanted to ask if he could show me the flowers once we land…”
Meanwhile, outside of the ship’s bathroom, Ruggie was crouched on the ground, tail between his legs as he held his red face from embarrassment. He literally told her he would not be touching her in any way, then there he goes!! Ugh… this was all because he got carried away…
He got carried away by her voice, her beauty, and most importantly her personality and how her happy laughter filled his ears and his heart with joy. His grandmother had warned him before he went to follow Leona as his captain: “beware of the mermaids, for they can bewitch any man at any time.”
It seemed he had been bewitched by her, he was truly enchanted.

SO-- I thought that pirate!Ruggie would be like fishing (bc he never ever stops trying to get food; + I'm taking One Piece's take of piracy so they're funky little guys that can sometimes be dangerous /hj) and he caught something big and went "guess who's having the feast of their lives!!!!" as the others watched but after he had difficulty bringing the "fish" up the ship, Jack and Jeanne decided to help, and wouldn't you know HE ACTUALLY CAUGHT A MERMAID SKSOSHSKS
Leona (the captain™) decided to throw her off board but before he could she begged them to let her stay; she was actually trying to escape from her step family and was caught on purpose. She told them she knew the sea by the back of her hand and they atm they were lacking a navigator-ish Leona decided to let her stay on the condition of making herself useful; throughout the entire thing Daisy kept clinging to Ruggie bc he actually helped her convince Leona to make her stay since she could be extremely useful — and he wanted to use her as bait to catch more fish lol.
Bc Ruggie helped convince Leona he ordered Ruggie to take care of her and he was actually the one to name her Daisy :D he couldn't pronounce her name so he named her the name of an edible flower he liked
I have this image in my head of after they manage to get her a potion to turn her into a human she can't stand and doesn't know what the heck a shower is, so Ruggie has to help her with cleaning her hair — not sexual at all, just very fluffy intimate moments :]

Wait, wait!" Is what Ruggie hears while walking back to Savannaclaw after practice with the Spelldrive Club. The voice would've annoyed him if it wasn't oh so familiar to the hyena's ears.
"I'm kinda in a hurry here, Daisy." He explains after noticing the girl standing on the top of a staircase of the school, her foot mid air trying to not touch the ground because it was missing its shoe.
It was a common issue, Ruggie noticed, that the Ramshackle prefect would always find herself losing one of her shoes; they would fall as she walked up a staircase, just like now, or they would slip from her foot as she walked… he didn't understand why but her shoes always seemed a size too big for her own feet.
He didn't want her to buy shoes that actually fit her well though, the situations she found herself in because of this issue were very comical to him, and he wasn't one to deny himself a good laugh.
"Please, you're close to my shoe, Ruggie! Can't you be a dear and get it for me? Please?" Daisy basically pleaded, her brown eyes shining as if that would somehow convince him.
Ruggie sighs, a chuckle escaping him because of her bad attempt at persuading him. "Listen, I'm tired from practice, alright? Just jump a few steps down, it's not that far away from you." He waved, turning around with that iconic smirk of his. "bye-bye."
"But- ugh." Daisy groaned and held the handrail, jumping from one step to the other, nearly falling in the process, letting out a small surprised gasp.
Ruggie's ear twitched at the sound, stopping right away. He tried rationalizing with himself, tried convincing himself to continue on his way to his dorm… he was tired, sweaty and probably smelly from the training… he still had some chores to do so all he wanted to right now was go back, take a shower and get everything done quickly so hopefully he'd be in bed soon-ish.
He heard a loud thud and another groan, and knew immediately he would help her despite everything.
"Seriously, you can't even catch your own shoe?" Ruggie complained as he walked to the start of the staircase and grabbed her shoe, looking up at her who was sitting down on one of the steps after falling. He walked up the stairs towards her, and Daisy smiled, almost apologetically.
"It's not that bad, it's just handing me my shoe." She insisted as he stopped in front of her.
Daisy was always like this too, always being calm and understanding — not like people couldn't piss her off, he's seen her when she's pissed off; heck, he'd been on the receiving end of it during the interdorm Spelldrive incident. Still, she was quick to forgive, quick to apologize, quick to sympathize and empathize; in a way, she reminded him of the kids from RSA. Everything pointed towards him feeling nothing but animosity towards her… yet, that wasn't how he felt.
He didn't understand why, but different from what he felt with the RSA students, Daisy… felt genuine. There was a fire in her eyes that intrigued him, and he couldn't help but want to understand her; it was like a puzzle piece he had to solve.
Ruggie crouched down, grabbing her foot gently and placing it inside the shoe. He noticed the big difference between the size of the shoe and the size of her foot and felt like laughing for a moment. He made sure to tie the shoelaces extra tight, hoping somehow it wouldn't slip away again.
"There." He said. "That'll cost you a donut."
Ruggie gave her his signature laugh, expecting the usual response: a sigh and a defeated nod. Instead, Daisy's face was colored pink and her eyes were wide; her mouth was open slightly in a bit of shock and Ruggie tilted his head, starting to feel embarrassed himself.
"Uh… you alright there, prefect?"
"Oh- oh! Uh- yeah, yeah, I'm ok!" She managed to say, clearing her throat and retracting her leg, holding it near her as if it was hurt by something. "A donut, right? Sure, I'll get you one for lunch."
"Great!" He smiled, happy to score a meal by such a simple act as getting someone else their shoe.
He got up, instinctively offering his hand to Daisy to help her get up. He realized his action a bit too late, so he just decided to comply and wait for her to take his hand. Daisy stared at it for a moment, he started worrying if his hands were too sweaty, too dirty for her, but he soon let go of the thought once she grabbed his hand.
Daisy used a different glove from what some of the NRC students wore, hers weren't made of leather, they were made from a much softer, breathable material, you could even see some of her skin tone through the fabric… because of this nature, Ruggie could feel her hand way easier than with a leather glove: her hand was soft, delicate, though it was filled with callouses. It was much smaller than his — though his hands weren't really that big to begin with — and it was warm. Really warm.
"I'll get going now." Ruggie had to get himself together before his thoughts got the best of him. "Be careful with your shoe, prefect. I won't be there to get it for you everytime."
With a wave, Ruggie left for the Mirror Chamber, leaving Daisy on the staircase by herself.
She let out a breath she wasn't aware she had been holding, and tried cooling her face down by flapping her hands. She sighed as the sensation of his rough skin against her calf, her foot and then her hand came back into her mind; she squished her face with her hands as if that would magically make these thoughts go away.
Ruggie was just trying to help — in his own way, always for a price — and here she was thinking of how his skin felt against her own? How his blue eyes stared at her? How despite his tired appearance, somehow he still looked beautiful and put together? She felt like a 5-year-old with her first crush…
"Daisy! Dai- oh! There you are!" Grim's voice made itself present from the top of the stairs; she turned around to find her cat-like friend calling for her. "Come on, what's taking you so long? We're two parts of one student so both of us need to attend Crewel's class otherwise we're done for!" Grim made a face at that and Daisy laughed.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" She said, deciding to think about her feelings later. She knew she would have to think about them sometime but right now… she had more important things to do.
THIS IS A TRUE GENTLEMAN. OMFG.

DAISY ACTUALLY MADE LIKE SMALL BENTO BOXES AS A WAY TO SHOW HOW MUCH SHE APPRECIATED RUGGIE
After they both started having crushes on each other most of the advances came from Ruggie, bc I saw somewhere that spotted make hyenas are very submissive and usually try to like win the females affection being this way (DON'T QUOTE BE ON THAT THO), so I thought Rugs would be the type to not say what he feels, especially because he's self conscious about his background and stuff, so he would do stuff like seeking Daisy's presence, carrying stuff for her, sharing his food ESPECIALLY if it was a day where they were having pumpkin desserts in the cafeteria, he always gave them to Daisy because he wanted to win her affections without needing to say anything
But Daisy was going crazy bc she didn't know if Rugs was actually interested in her or if she was overthinking it bc they did become really good friends, so she retributed his kindness by making "way too much food for her and Grim to eat" and "I happen to be here right now so I might as well help you with Leona's laundry", stuff like that!!
Eventually we all know what happens Daisy asks Ruggie on a date bc if she didn't she would go insane overthinking stuff
you will never understand the bright smile that came to my face the moment i saw more than one paragraph-
BUT ANYWAY THIS IS SO CUTE :(((
Daisy is such an awkward mess (can relate) AND IT MAKES SO SILLY THE WAY SHE WOULD BE DESPERATE WAITING FOR HIM TO APPROACH HER OR MAKE A CLEAR MOVE
I will forever and always love the concept of Ruggie not being self aware and unintentionally acting like that with Daisy, but POOR GIRL :,)) LIKE I CAN IMAGINE HER DESPAIR- I WENT THROUGH THAT😰

"You could stay here. With me." Ruggie says, his voice slightly muffled by his face being shoved in Daisy's hair and he held her close during a casual dance at Ramshackle. The girl flinched and put distance between them the moment he said that.
"Here? Like, in twisted wonderland?" She blinked, her heart beating fast rejoicing at the thought, but her mind instantly told her how selfish that would be. She couldn't leave her step the house she grew up in, it was so dear to her parents. "I... You know I can't... I can't do that."
"why not?" He asked, genuinely curious and a bit sad, his ears going flat as his grip on her waist and hand tighted slightly.
"the mirror said I don't belong here, remember?" Her voice sounded defeated, she looked down almost in shame. "It said my soul was colorless, that I was like an empty vessel."
"that was referring to your magic abilities, I'm certain." Ruggie reassured her, his hand turning her face to look up at him. "And just because you don't belong doesn't mean you can't stay, we can make you belong."
"Rugs, it- it's not that simple..." She put his hand away, holding it. "I can't stay. I... I have a duty with my house in that other world I can't- it was my parents'."
"your parents would've wanted you to live happily. Aren't you happy here?"
"of course I am!" She quickly said, holding his gaze, afraid he could ever think otherwise. Her days in NRC had been the happiest of her life, not only because of Ruggie, but because of everyone else she met. It was important, it felt like... Like family. "But still..." Her soul wasn't meant to be there.
Ruggie stayed quiet for a moment, staring at her brown eyes and seeing nothing but shame and guilt. He frowned as he let her go.
"what makes me upset is you told me your dream was to escape your step family, but you don't look like you want to." He waited to hear what she had to say, but she simply frowned at the ground, fidgeting with her fingers.
After that, he sighed, kissed her forehead quickly and wished her a good night, walking away from Ramshackle and back to his own dorm. Daisy stood there in the dark, her thoughts consuming her.

Anyways I actually came here on Tumblr to tell in your inbox that daiggie are way more O'Malley x Duchess coded than I initially thought--
I'm finishing rewatching Aristocats (I didn't finish it that day) and I just watched the scene when they are on the rooftop (the one where O'Malley tells her her eyes are actually like sapphires) and it's just?? So daiggie coded?? The way O'Malley slowly implies he'd like her to stay by his side and Duchess saying she would love to but she can't because of Madame (her owner) I'm actually going insane😭😭 AND THE WAY THEY REFER TO EACH OTHER AS "DARLING" AND "BABY THROUGHOUT THAT WHOLE EXCHANGE BC THEY'RE NOT SCARED OF HIDING THEIR FEELINGS ANYMORE😭😭😭😭
It's giving when Daisy thought she had an obligation to go back to her world while she was perfectly happy by Ruggie's side-- but Ruggie didn't pressure her to stay because he wants her to stay because she wants to not because he pressured her😭😭 IM GOING INSANE
