[BREAKING] BTS’ CHERI & SEVENTEEN’S JOSHUA REPORTEDLY ENGAGED

On February 15, BTS member Cheri posted a picture to her Instagram seemingly confirming her engagement with SEVENTEEN member Joshua.

The couple has been together now for five years. They were first rumored to be dating after an anonymous user posted images from cheri’s private account. Since the confirmation of their relationship, they’ve been quite public with their love and support for each other.

Fans say that during the 2023 MAMA awards in Tokyo, there wasn’t a ring on cheri’s finger, leading some to believe that during the period between the awards and her concert they got engaged.

Attendees of her first solo concert in December caught a glimpse at what appeared to be a new ring on her hand. During a Weverse live broadcast, she addressed it as an early Christmas present.

Neither BigHit Music nor PLEDIS Entertainment have released a statement at the time.

THE HISTORY OF CHERYL LEE

lee chaerin, born cheryl lee, is the oldest daughter to yang haesook, a businesswoman, and lee yo-han, a chef. she was born on april 20, 1996 in san francisco, california where her parents owned and ran several restaurants.

growing up, cheryl and her younger sister charlotte were homeschooled. during their free time, they could be found at a local youth center — cheri was an avid swimmer and enjoyed sitting in on the music classes. her mother always had a passion for music, spending her nights singing her daughters to sleep and always making sure the radios were tuned in to whatever station they’d picked for the day. she encouraged cheri to pick up music as a hobby if she was really interested.

cheri’s parents gifted her a guitar for her tenth birthday and that summer she began guitar lessons and voice lessons. this is when she also began writing music. as she got older, she would spend time outside of the restaurant playing for people on the street.

on a trip to south korea, cheri was scouted by a bighit representative. she was unsure if she truly wanted to be an idol so far from her family, but her sister begged her to take the opportunity. after extreme consideration, she and her mother moved to korea, and cheri officially became a trainee in august 2010.

cheri was considered a powerhouse amongst trainees. she wasn’t incredibly social, but greatly admired and feared by most of her peers.

unfortunately, charlotte passed away in 2011 due to a genetic disorder. cheri went back to the states for several months, halting her training and subsequently pushing her debut back. the loss took a toll on her mental health and she was unsure if she would go back to bighit. ultimately, she decided not to give up because she knew charlotte would want to see her succeed.

cheri officially moved back to korea, her parents divorcing and her dad staying in the states. she pushed herself incredibly hard while training which proved to be harsh for her mental and physical health.

after the fail of her company’s girl group, the remaining female trainees were transferred to a different agency. cheri, however, was handpicked by the leader of the upcoming group BTS to be in the lineup. given the choices of joining a group ready for debut or continue to train in uncertainty, she picked the group.

debuting under the stage name cheri, a childhood nickname commonly used by her sister, she sparked controversy for being the only girl in a boy group. throughout the years, cheri has been involved in countless scandals, and has been deemed one of the most hated idols in the industry. she initially regretted her decision to be in the group as she was constantly criticized for her role in the group. despite this, she remains an incredibly popular figure in her industry and undeniably a superstar.

a/n — i finished reading one true loves and decided it was time <3 also love niall horan

the heat lingered heavily in the bathroom, the steam fogging up the mirror. cheri had her hair dryer turned on the highest setting and a playlist still on from her shower. willow had sprawled out on the floor outside the bathroom, suddenly perking up and running off at a distant sound. she was preoccupied with thoughts about her upcoming concert. she had spent all day with hyesu privately rehearsing and, unfortunately, pushed herself too hard. by the time she had left HYBE, she was lightheaded and her knee ached; she wanted nothing more than to come home and get in bed. after a short nap, she scrubbed the day off in the shower.

willow’s paws thumped against the tile as she appeared beside cheri. the dog bounced around until she began barking. cheri jumped when joshua suddenly appeared in the doorway, visibly exhausted but still the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen.

“oh!” she gasped and instinctively flung her arms around his neck. “i didn’t hear you come in.” his strong arms wrapped themselves around her waist and he pressed himself into her.

“i’m sorry, baby.” he said into her hair. “i thought willow was a good alarm system.” the couple glanced down at the white puff of fur sitting in the hall and laughed.

“come on,” joshua pulled back. “i brought dinner — japchae from your favorite place.” giddily, cheri almost ran out of the bathroom with joshua in tow. the scent of their meal met her nose before the newly decorated living room appeared before her eyes. joshua had been home longer than she’d thought; he had set the coffee table with dinner and their drinks and lit candles all around.

“shua,” the woman uttered. “this is so sweet. you didn’t have to do this.” cheri placed both of her hands on his face and kissed him softly.

“it’s okay,” he said, “i wanted to. we haven’t had a proper date night in a while.” joshua guided her down to the sofa. they settled and he opened the bottle of wine and poured it into their glasses. the two fell into a comfortable conversation about things they had missed in each other’s lives recently.

once the food was gone and the glasses were empty, they found themselves nestled on the couch. pulling a throw blanket over them, joshua combed through cheri’s hair, his touch sending shivers down her spine. with a contented sigh, her eyes fluttered closed and she released a soft hum. he listened to her steady breathing, watching as her eyes fluttered, feeling her fingers dance across his forearm. he was so in love.

“marry me,” he said, barely above a whisper. her head shot up from his chest, eyes bulging in their sockets and jaw hung open. “i- damn it.” joshua’s hand quickly came up to cover his face. cheri, still gawking, pushed herself off of him.

the flustered man sat up as well, taking the opportunity to dash to the bedroom, leaving cheri with the question (statement?) she pushed her hair behind her ears and glanced down the hallway. they had talked about getting married and cheri knew that he was it for her. but, with their lives, she didn’t know if they could keep an engagement quiet, let alone a wedding.

joshua glided down the hallway once more, his hands hidden behind his back. cheri’s heart fluttered in anticipation when she realized this was really happening.

“cher, you are the best part of my day,” he began, lowering himself to his knees. “i’ve known you were the one since i met you. you are the only person i want to see after the longest, hardest days. i love you. will you marry me?” the white box clutched his hands opened to reveal the ring.

cheri clasped her hands together, a smile spreading across her face. “of course,” she answered before throwing her arms around his neck. “i love you. so much.” her cheeks were aching and joshua began pulling away. wordlessly, he took her hand and slipped the ring on with a kiss to her knuckle.

“i’m so… i’m just…” in awe, she placed her hands on his face and kissed him hard.

“very happy.” joshua laughed. “i had something else planned, but it just felt right to do it now.” his hands were around her waist, restlessly rubbing her back.

“i want to know all about it, fiancé.” cheri kissed him again, joshua pulling her to stand up. “i know that whatever you had planned would have been incredible, but this was perfect.”

“i can’t wait to marry you.”

BONUS

“mom, i just wanted to get breakfast.” chaerin whined. “i’m not being suspicious!” haesook eyed her daughter through her sunglasses. she sat her coffee cup down, studying her daughter again.

“if you’re pregnant—”

“not! i am not! oh my god,” she covered her face, making sure her ring was on full display. haesook only hummed, cheri rolling her eyes and dropping her hands.

“well, if nothing is really happening…” the older woman turned in her seat, looking over the menu once more. chaerin threw her head back in frustration.

“mom,” she held up her hand. “he proposed last night.” her mother lowered her sunglasses, pulling her hand closer to look at the ring, a smile forming on her face.

“oh, chaerin, it’s beautiful.” she remarked. “i’m happy for you both.” haesook gave her hand a squeeze.

cheri’s face lit up with a radiant smile as she held the ring out to her mother. “he had it customized in italy,” she explained eagerly. “look at the engraving.”

haesook inspected the inscription with delicate fingers. she carefully turned and examined the band for a moment before placing it back on her daughter’s finger.

“cherish it forever. he’s one in a million.” she says, twisting it so the word is face up. “he’s good for you. you’re both very lucky.”

chaerin knows she is — they are.

swiping over it one last time, she turned it back the right way. a forever reminder.

BTS’ CHERI INVOLVED IN CAR ACCIDENT

On April 4, Multiple Korean news outlets reported the accident involving female idol “C” happened around 7 PM on April 3.

It is unconfirmed if there have been any injuries or fatalities.

[ UPDATE ]

Big Hit Entertainment confirms BTS’ Cheri was involved in the car accident on April 3 and has been hospitalized with injuries.

The label stated, “The vehicle carrying Cheri was hit by another vehicle and caused injuries to all passengers and the driver. They were immediately transported to the hospital where Cheri is currently being treated. She will halt promotions with the group until she has fully recovered.”

It is confirmed that nobody in Cheri’s vehicle had alcohol in their system. It is still unclear at this time what caused the accident.

Final Update: Police have confirmed a staff member and the driver have passed due to their injuries.

Following the investigation of the accident, it has been determined that the cause was a stalker who cheri had previously reported to the police. The stalker had repeatedly threatened Cheri and has harassed her publicly.

Cheri was able to identify the person and police have confirmed that the driver was arrested and has been charged with the murder of both individuals.

We offer our condolences to the families.

“do i look okay?”

haesook studied her daughter from the bed. of course she looked okay — she looked great. chaerin was visibly getting better everyday; mentally and physically. she had been attending therapy and had made a major improvement in recovering from her eating disorder.

it was difficult watching her daughter’s struggle, and truly, haesook didn’t know how to help. the first few weeks were especially rough: cheri had spent the first five days of her hiatus on bed rest and refused to talk to anyone besides her mom until she was absolutely forced to talk to him.

him, joshua hong, the boy that was making this whole situation almost bearable. joshua had taken it upon himself to visit chaerin, not caring what state she was in. he knew that if she truly was opposed to seeing anyone, haesook would’ve turned him away immediately. in fact, she welcomed him happily, claiming that her daughter desperately needed to talk to someone besides herself.

for the next month, joshua spent a few days with chaerin every week. he brought her snacks and suggested activities to do when she wasn’t in therapy. he even offered to take her to and from her sessions, which made it all a little easier. she had to admit the gestures made her heart flutter. cheri had always appreciated joshua, even more so now. haesook didn’t fail to notice that her daughter now clung to the man when he hugged her or walked her inside. she saw the admiration cheri had for him growing daily. she knew she was in love. she knew that there would have to be some force for cheri to acknowledge her feelings. and so there was.

during dinner the week before, cheri had been forced to confess to joshua that, yes, she did like him a lot. fortunately, she did not make a fool of herself and the feelings were reciprocated. as they had done practically anything but go on an official “date”, joshua promised his now girlfriend that he would take care of it all and plan their first date.

cheri looked in the mirror still waiting for her mother’s approval and frowned when she didn’t catch her eye.

“mom?” the girl looked back. “is this okay?” she fidgeted with the strap on her dress. haesook smiled fondly.

“perfect,” she stood and placed a kiss to her cheek. “i’ll meet you downstairs.” cheri looked at herself one last time in the mirror, adjusted her jewelry and hair, then made her way downstairs.

her date stood in the entry hall with her mother, stuck in conversation. joshua always looked nice and today was no exception. cheri noticed he was holding a bouquet a flowers.

“hi,” she greeted him with a smile. joshua averted his attention to her and beamed. “are those for me?” she gestured to the large bouquet of white carnations.

“of course,” he placed the flowers in her arms and she inhaled the scent. “i know they’re your favorite.”

flattered, cheri sniffed them one last time before handing them off to her mother. haesook took that as her cue to exit and hurried off to put the flowers in a vase.

“thank you so much. so, what do you have planned?” joshua opened the door for cheri, taking her hand and leading her to the car.

“i thought we could have a picnic on the beach.” he replied. “i packed everything.”

the backseat held a variety of items for their date: a blanket, a basket, and two baseball caps for a quick and easy disguise.

joshua drove them to a beach in incheon. he parked near the entrance and took both baseball caps from the back — they put them on before leaving the car. joshua opened cheri’s door and held out his hand.

to cheri’s delight, the beach was relatively empty, so she removed her hat. joshua continued to lead cheri across the sand until he decided on a spot near the end of the shore. the couple spread the blanket far enough away that the waves wouldn’t reach them.

they settled on the blanket and unpacked the basket. varieties of gimbap, choco heim, baked mandu, and strawberry milkis were spread across the blanket. joshua had included everything he knew she could enjoy. she took one of the milks and opened it.

“this is so sweet,” the woman marveled. “thank you.” joshua took her free hand and pressed a kiss to the back.

“anything for my girl.” he opened the container of gimbap and offered it to her. “i figured you’d want to go somewhere calm, so it was between here or your bedroom.” cheri chuckled, earning a smile from the man.

“well,” she began, “if we happen to float away, you’re in luck because i used to be a swimmer.” joshua raised an eyebrow.

“not, like, olympic gold winning swimmer. but, we were members at the YMCA and i was one of the best lap swimmers.” she clarified.

“wow,” he awed. “i never knew this about you, lee chaerin. maybe i should call you my little mermaid!” cheri grinned, taking a dumpling from its container.

joshua searched through the basket while she ate. he pulled out the case for her polaroid camera and opened it, snapping a picture of her. she pouted, taking the camera from his hands and scooting closer. the man wrapped his arm around her and kissed her cheek as she took a picture.

“cute,” she commented once it developed. she held the camera up once again and took several more. they examined the photos, picking out the ones they thought were the best. joshua took the one of cheri and put it in his wallet.

joshua watched her sift through the photos, a soft smile displayed on her face. he lifted her chin and brushed the hair from her vision. tudying her features carefully, he asked, “can i kiss you?”

cheri felt warmth flood her cheeks. she leaned in instinctively, her lips finding his. joshua’s arms snaked around her waist. time seemed to stand still as he pulled her onto his lap, deepening the kiss.

cheri broke away first, her hands lingered on the back of his neck. “i enjoyed that,” she admitted, stealing another kiss. “we should’ve been doing that a long time ago.”

“we should’ve,” joshua caressed her cheek with his thumb. “it feels right to call you mine.”

cheryl lee was born in san francisco, california to lee yo-han and hannah yang. cheri is the older sister to charlotte, who unfortunately passed not long after she became a trainee.

cheri was homeschooled and had a lot of free time. she convinced her mom to let her start piano lessons on top of her guitar and voice lessons. hae-sook did not argue as she wanted her daughter to find what suited her best. during a family trip, cheri was scouted by a bighit representative. she was unsure if she truly wanted to be an idol so far from her family, but her sister begged her to take the opportunity. after extreme consideration, her family moved temporarily to south korea in 2010.

due to her sister’s untimely death and the effects it had on her, cheri considered quitting and moving back to the states. she persisted, not handling her emotions properly. cheri was dubbed a monster trainee and was known to be quite intimidating. in 2013, cheri debuted in bts as the only female member.

she brought a lot of attention to the group domestically and internationally — unfortunately, she paid the price for being the only girl. cheri never took particularly good care of herself. in 2018, she was placed on hiatus due to her mental health and physical health. in her career, she has been faced with scandal upon scandal, rumor after rumor. her most noteworthy being a dating scandal with seventeen’s joshua hong immediately after her return to group activities. cheri and bighit confirmed the relationship in a letter from the artist.

she is widely known for her songwriting and has over 100 songs copyrighted to her name. her work is a testament of her life and feelings. cheri is often criticized for being to “open” and for not being careful enough with her idol image.
