biography.

the winter of 1879 was a harsh one , the people of canterbury facing starvation lest the cold take them first . as january crawled on , cora came into the world without a care for the cold ; a healthy baby , if not a bit small — rosy-cheeked & beaming up at her mother . among the many children who couldn't survive such conditions , cora was a miracle baby .

her parents were each from respectable names , but they lived modestly together with their children . declan came along first , seven years before cora & would never fail to remind her of it . the family lived peacefully , keeping to themselves . father was an innovator , an inventor - they lived comfortably on the wealth accrued from two patents he had sold in his youth . he continued his craft into old age , until his fingers could no longer tighten the screws . then , cora became his hands for several years . she was fascinated , eagerly learning as they went . he was particularly invested in his imagining of time travel , and once considered it his life's work before deciding it was all too theoretical to continue wasting resources upon . once declan had enlisted & been sent off to serve in the british army , the house grew quiet . most days cora could be found tucked away in her father's study , silently reading or frantically scribbling something down .

grave news befell them in the fall of 1891 , grief pouring from the home like a tidal wave . declan had been injured beyond help , & they had lost their son . cora's mother became a solemn woman after that , rarely speaking unless roused from her stony reverie . her father fell gravely ill only a few short months later - from grief , their neighbors would whisper .

cora continued to work alongside her father until he passed away . she was thirteen , feeling lost and unsure of what would be waiting if she took another step forwards . her work never ceased , endless nights spent at her father's desk . she dabbled in various small inventions , including a blueprint for a mechanical calculator and a portable sewing machine .

may 2nd of 1902 woke canterbury with a gentle , warm breeze . it began as any other day would , with cora leaving cecily in the hands of her mother in order to make a brief shop run . she couldn't have been gone longer than an hour , yet it was enough time for tragedy to befall the sykes manor . when she returned to find the rubble , a distraught cora was informed that the fire had begun on the second floor . it had enveloped the stairs to the third before either occupant could descend them .

burdened with so much loss , so much grief- cora secluded herself for months , stretching into years . she couldn't mourn properly amidst so much denial , refusal to believe that this was the truth . that this was how it was meant to be . she dug out her father's old studies , his lost & forgotten equations & blueprints . time travel had been put under a microscope by renowned author h.g. wells , author of the time machine . after months of writing back & forth with wells under her brother's name & her father's acclaim , a meeting was arranged . wells was fascinated with the realization of his concept , believing they could reinvent mankind's concept of time as a whole .

cain was homeschooled until the age of fourteen , when he first entered high school . his parents were far too concerned with his health to allow him out of their sights long enough to attend six-hour school days , leaving cain with his aunt aurora during the day & effectively homeschooling him in the evenings .

ARC 1. age 17 - 19

deeply sheltered throughout their early years , parents so worried over his illness , cain enters high school having never gone to a public school prior . expecting miracles , they quickly realize the experience is going to be hell . either bullied as an easy target or pitied for being the “sick kid” , cain struggled to make friends & was viewed as a “recluse” throughout his freshman year .

fellow students’ perspectives on cain deeply shifted after cain was suspended from school for two weeks due to an incident with another student . having struck the boy out of anger ( at being bullied & therefore provoked ) , cain’s abrasive behavior didn’t stop there , perpetually putting their safety at risk to the chagrin of his parents in an effort to establish his own identity & individuality .

by the time he arrived in his sophomore year , he was efficient in the piano , guitar & violin . as they moved through high school , cain’s interest shifted deeply towards the violin . they graduated with a 3.7 GPA & what would be a full-sail ride to juilliard . all buckled up & ready to attend the finest music school in the states , tragedy strikes the year before cain leaves .

ARC 2. age 20 - 23

cain’s father suddenly passes when he’s 18 , & cain is specifically named to inherit his private journals & a generous sum of money intended for , as their father put , “ wherever his heart takes him ” .

among angelo's compositions & written music , one particular journal is nearly full of illustrations & information angelo had gathered throughout his years in corwick , interacting with the supernatural entities within the town . illustrating the different kinds of fae his father had interacted with as well as angelo’s concerns regarding cain’s heritage . within the journals , angelo leaves cain with the parting knowledge that he was a changeling . his father had suspected it for years . an array of small skeletons accompanied their father's journals , carefully arranged within glass containers ... some , humanoid - yet far too tiny to be human .

after discovering the extent of his father's devotion to his research , cain sets aside his dreams of juilliard in order to continue their father's work with the money provided ; desperate to learn more about where he came from .

ARC 3. age 24 - 26

while connecting the dots about their heritage , cain’s research veers into obsessively exploring the supposed cause of his illness & the curing of it ; coming to the conclusion that they were suffering from malnutrition due to the way his physiology is meant to be sustained versus the way a human would be .

cain becomes very invested in their research at this point in time due to the growing extent of their physical ailments . he is internally decaying & suffers extended periods of extreme pain . with no other options , cain delves into researching the more grotesque occult theories . this leads them down a rabbit hole , angelo's unfinished research indicating that human blood was the theoretical holy grail . it was different from vampires ;  less food and more of a medicine . cain does not crave it naturally , but becomes dependent upon its medicinal properties . he obtains it through an extremely close network of friends he makes while still in the states researching .

at age twenty - six , cain settles in a large city ( plot dependent , but typically baltimore ) . at this point , he’s extremely reliant upon close friends for blood & has more or less steadied his health .

no longer physically decaying , cain delves further into his music & begins work with an entertainment company to fill various positions as needed . he also consistently performs live at small gigs with friends .

extremely content with his life as he works & continues his research , cain moves from the small studio he’d gotten upon first moving to the city & finds a loft closer to the studios . occasionally having the opportunity to travel for work , cain continues his travels in this way .

ARC 4. age 27 - 34

it’s when cain is thirty that they receive the devastating news of their mother’s death . he completely breaks down , her passing being just as sudden & horrifying as his father’s years before . grief-stricken , cain refused to see any of their friends or contacts that they would typically receive blood from .

something inside of him breaks , & cain falls deeply ill . broken into a cold sweat , muscles aching & insides churning ... they were dying . out of fear & desperation at the realization , he leaves home & ultimately kills a younger man while feeding . the encounter strengthens them beyond what he’d ever experienced before , life flowing through his body without a hint of illness or pain . this feeling becomes addictive . they do their best to hide it from those they loved ... most of whom wouldn’t question them ,  just glad that they were healthier & happier than ever before .
