His love languages are definitely acts of service and then quality time. He's a good diplomat but if you ask him to talk about anything too personal or too emotional he will just blank.... love is about the same for him though with time he will learn to express himself.

He actually loves hugs! But the occasion for him to give or receive any hasn't come up often. His embraces are very hesitant at first but once he's sure that the other person wants it, he'll fully hold them tight into his arms.

He's awful at it. His idea of gifts are whatever people donate to gods, which are often not great gifts for normal people. If you clearly tell him what gifts you would like to receive though, he'll get better at it. .... Eventually.

Never more than in-passing. He was pretty isolated by his military training as a child, and he was mostly a teenager lost in an adults' world.

One of the cavalrymen of his Hellriders unit was a male dragonborn named Rheighar, whom he had known for many years and served with on the daily. They had a fling, but over time Ashen developed genuine feelings for his comrade-in-arms. He never worked up the courage to tell him about it soon enough; Rheighar was slain in the battle for Elturel and Ashen could not do anything but drag his lifeless body to his final resting place.
It affected him very deeply and he has never told anyone about it. He has yet to work up the courage to go back to Elturel to visit his grave, though he would really like to.

The cleric, who was sitting in his tent polishing his armour with much effort and was honestly not asking for this, looked up to Astarion with a raised eyebrow. The vampire had to be drunk on blood, or alcohol, or both.
Ashen was full of humour, as Astarion knew; but sometimes, the funniest answer he could give was to pretend being dry and humourless.
"I am a priest of Helm, /my child/. If you are not aware, He is the god of soldiers and sentinels. So unless you have somehow taken up a guard job and ran while on duty, your /sin/ does not concern Helm, /or/ me."

The cleric was so used to there being a certain distance between his novices, other lower-ranked Helmites and himself, that he was genuinely taken aback by the question for a moment. The other priests were keen on leaving him alone, some of them knowing that it was difficult, and unwanted by him, to make him come out of his shell. It seemed Bernard did not get the memo. Still, Ashen entertained the question, if only out of politeness.

The cleric closes the book in front of him, resting both of his hands on its leather-bound cover as he thought of what answer he should provide her. He was interested, they both knew it, but his professional conscience could not possibly let him give his phone number on his work time.
"Why don't you learn Helm's main tenets by heart and recite them to me? I might give you my number then."
Ironically, these tenets included not getting distracted from one's duty.

Ashen could hardly blame the anonymous enquirer. His own relationship with his late partner had started with a one night stand. Which turned into... several years' stands, he supposed. And he knew how easy it was to feel enamoured with a temporary partner, especially when missing the affection of past years.
"Romantic feelings impose themselves on you, therefore it's never too soon to have them. You may be rather thinking that it's too soon to confess them to your lover, which may be quite right. You've had a one night stand, however. This means there's at least mutual physical attraction. Isn't that good news? Perhaps... Spend more time with them, see how it turns out? What's your favorite thing about your muse? :>
[It's not something I explore in threads very often, solely when Ashen mentions his late lover in passing, but his whole character is built around grief, trauma and survivor's guilt, which to me are fascinating topics. As my friends put it, he's a completely ordinary character, who's only made peculiar by the extraordinary events he's been through. But these events are not uncommon, either for DnD or our world. They are war, the loss of loved ones, the loss of identity, the struggle to find resilience within oneself and a live to will where there is no longer one. In short, He Needs a Hug]

The answer could have been quite simple. He liked to pleasure others and to hear them moan in response. Nevertheless, he may have been a cleric, but he was first and foremost a soldier. He knew that was not what was enquired about. The mysterious enquirer likely expected something more exciting, a deep dive into his psyche, or whatever it was that people expected when allowed to ask about a priest's intimacy.

In Avernus, the silhouette of a Hellrider behind flames. The cavalryman had seemingly lost all control of himself; he raged and screamed and barked, mace bludgeoning the corpse below him repeatedly in a ghastly spray of crimson. The cambion was long dead, yet Ashen was mad with bloodthirst, and even his horse dared not witness the psychological descent of his master. In the end, though, Rheighar was still as motionless as his killer, and the loss would weigh on Ashen's mind for the remainder of his life, regardless of his messy kill.
"You have to find peace within yourself. This does not mean forgiveness, if you are not willing to grant it, but a motion towards accepting the past and, most importantly, that it is past. You must make space for new beginnings. Let your pain inspire you in becoming a better person, if you must, but do not let it weigh you down."
The cleric sighed, leaning in towards Mourndax with a softer voice.
"You know, life is too short to spend it feeling miserable. It may end at any point. You should live every day as if it were the last. You should not chase grudges. You should chase the stars. You should go to bed every evening telling yourself that if you were never to wake up, then your last day alive was satisfying to you."
