Mirio had noticed Tamaki had been...off lately.
Ever since he and Nejire had been called out for some meeting, he seemed to have changed some. He and Nejire seemed to stick together more, be a little more hushed up and trying to go on as per normal, but it was...just strange. Not that he minded them getting so close. He adored them both so much. And Mirio remembered the last time they had been assigned some secret mission, the three of them had stuck together. Of course now that he was Quirkless, he couldn’t be a part of it. He hadn’t been called with them. Still, he worried for them. How could he put them at ease?
Whatever it was Tamaki had on his mind, maybe Mirio couldn’t know just yet. But with how it clearly weighed at Tamaki, he couldn’t just sit there, twiddling his thumbs. So he had invited Tamaki to relax on the balcony with him. After classes, after all the training. The golden-red rays of the setting sun spilled color over Tamaki, painting his indigo hair a lovely purple shade. A gentle breeze moved the boy’s hair as Mirio helped catch him as he jumped across the gap between their windows. Laughter spilled from his lips as he ruffled the boy’s hair, telling him how cool he looked, Tamaki remarking he was so sure he would have fallen, and how relieved he was, even though he knew Mirio would be right there to catch him--
“You’re right,” Mirio had said. “I’ll always catch you when you fall.” He remembered the first time he’d said that so well.
They’d climbed the climbing wall for the plants in his yard because Tamaki had been chasing after a butterfly. Mirio had followed happily because it had been the first time he’d seen Tamaki so happy and excited about something. Up they’d gone and sat there, with Tamaki waving his arms and chatting all kinds of things about butterflies, how pretty he found them, how cool they were. And when they had to come down...Tamaki couldn’t. He’d been so scared to come down, because he didn’t want to fall and get hurt. So Mirio had promised to catch him. He promised again and again that he would catch Tamaki, he would never let him get hurt.
“I’ll protect you!” he had said, beaming so brightly. “I can help! I can save you!”
Of course they’d both fallen down, but the fact that Tamaki had trusted him enough to jump down and into his arms in spite of his fear had been what had made him so damn happy. Yeah...Tamaki trusted him. Even now, Tamaki held him in such high regard. Anything and everything he needed, Mirio was willing to do for him. He knew Tamaki would do the same for him. So he would do whatever it took to make sure Tamaki was happy and at ease. Still...
A soft sigh left him. The day’s glow died, little by little. Looking out over the balcony with him like this...wasn’t enough. He knew it wasn’t. Tamaki couldn’t share what he and Nejire were so concerned about, but--
“You know something? Tamaki, you’re so...amazing.” Still, to bear it, both were remarkable. “You...uh, heh!" Mirio shifted a bit. “You know I’m not all that smart. I’m silly, and I know I don’t take things seriously sometimes.” He paused. “But when it comes to you...” His hands gripped the railing. “When it comes to you, I feel like I really know you. I, um...I’m sorry for tricking you into coming out here, and end up talking like this. I really wanted to do something fun, but...”
The worry pressed at him to much for that now. Now that it really registered, Mirio couldn’t help it. He was supposed to be the one Tamaki could rely on, alongside Nejire, but right now he just felt-- “I’ll admit it, I’m a little worried. You’ve been acting all...well, you’re a little more anxious than usual. It was because of that meeting, right?” A hand released to wave a little.
“I know, I know--I can’t know what happened there or what it’s about. But I just want you to know, that even if I don’t...I still wanna be there for you. If there’s anything I can do to help you, I’ll do it. I’ll smile. I’ll try, and--” He laughed. “I’ll try to make you some onigiri! Just so you can feel okay! I’ll do everything. Anything. As long as...as long as it’s for you, I’ll do anything. You’re my best friend!” He stopped then let out a soft breath. “You’re my precious friend. So I can’t help feel feeling a little hopeless when I can’t do anything for you. I promised I’d help you, from the very start. I’d promised I’d be there. No matter what.”
“I might not have a Quirk, but I’m still Lemillion. I’m still the Mirio who wants nothing more than to make you happy, from the bottom of his heart. So...so what can I do to make you smile again? What can I do to make you feel happy, even with everything going on? Cuz...cuz I love you lots, Tamaki! I know I say it a lot, but I really mean it! Every single one!” A hand reached out and found the other’s, squeezing it gently. “And when you love someone, you do everything you can to make sure they’re okay. So, Tamaki--I wanna do the best I can for you. Would you please tell me? What I can do?”
Mirio turned to face the other boy and smiled. “I promise you. I’ll do my very best! For you!”
He didn’t quite know how it happened. In opening his eyes, suddenly Tamaki was so close. A soft breath left him as a hand settled over his face and he felt the other’s lips brush against his. He had to have been dreaming. It was his only explanation why. And yet he felt it clear as day. The little trembling in Tamaki’s body in having done something so bold. The uncertainty and clumsiness of inexperience. The shaky breaths and held suspense in wondering if maybe he had been too reckless. Mirio knew it, he knew Tamaki so well, he didn’t even need to have his eyes open to know how nervous his childhood friend was.
But he didn’t need to be.
One kiss, and he felt as though those butterflies Tamaki adored so much were filling and fluttering around his tummy. Amidst surprise, he felt...happiness. Nothing but sheer unadulterated joy. It was without question he would move to--as best and as gently as he could--return the kiss.
‘It’s okay,’ he hoped he could at the very least convey to him within the sweet, little gesture. ‘It’s okay. I love you, after all. I’ll accept it all.’
