In search of compostable clothing closures
Making clothes that are 97% biodegradable is surprisingly easy. Pick a natural fibre fabric, buy some 100% cotton or linen thread, and you're there. (You can even get 100% cotton overlocker thread - though you have to go searching for it.)
Those last few percent, though? That can be tough. One of the biggest offenders is closures. While there are plenty of clothes that don't need something to hold them shut, I confess I like having the option. Below is a round-up of various closures, and their compostability.
Note: for the purpose of this article, I'm treating metal closures as "compostable", in the sense that they're 1) easy to remove before you compost the rest of the object, and 2) infinitely reusable on other things, unless they break - at which point they're usually recyclable using our current commercial systems. And remember, re-using things that already exist is always preferable to buying new, "better" items.
Buckles/Rings
While less common than other closure methods, I find buckles, D-rings and O-rings are great when used in the right context. They're usually metal or plastic, neither of which are compostable - but metal will last practically forever, if it's good quality. Plastic tends to degrade over time, especially if exposed to the sun.
I find rings especially quick and easy to use, and a set of D-rings can give a very fine-tuned amount of tightening. My favourite belt uses two square D-rings instead of a buckle closure.
Buttons
The humble button, while ubiquitous now, took a while to catch on. Buttons as a common method of closure didn't become popular in Europe* until about the early 1300s, around the same time that the tailoring revolution[^] happened.
Nowadays, plastic is by far the most common material that buttons are made from. It's cheap and sturdy, but obviously it doesn't compost. So what are some alternatives?
Liz Haywood, a pattern maker who focuses on zero-waste designs, has thought a bit about this conundrum here. There's photos of several different DIY compostable and recycled buttons in her post.
For a completely compostable garment, wood, leather, horn, fabric, and thread buttons are your best bet. If, like most sensible people, you remove the buttons from something that's about to be worm food before you ditch it, the options expand considerably - metal, clay, recycled bottle caps, even glass buttons are all possible. You can have a lot of fun with making your own buttons - to match an outfit, or contrast with it, or maybe you'd like a different button for every buttonhole...
Another, related option is cufflinks - 18th century shirts often used cufflinks on the sleeves and one or two small thread buttons on the collar. That way one set of cufflinks could be used on multiple shirts, showing off a bit of wealth, while saving them from the (admittedly harsh) laundry practices of the day.
[*]: I have no doubt that buttons became popular in other parts of the world, too, but unfortunately I don't know much about it. Europe in the 14-15th century is my main area of study, mostly due to the fact that the historical re-enactment group that I'm a part of operates in that time period.
[^]: The tailoring revolution refers to the period where garments for the higher classes underwent a dramatic change in the way they were cut out. The very short version is, fashion garments shifted from primarily rectangular construction to more form-fitting, using the precursors of many standard cutting practices used today.
Elastic
While elastic isn't technically a closure, it's used that way in many different objects. Most elastic nowadays is made from polyester and synthetic rubber. No composting there.
But, all is not lost! You can now find elastics made of natural rubber and cotton! (I was quite impressed by this, to be honest. I thought I'd have to give up elastic for good.)
The downside, as is usual when you actually give a crap about the planet, is cost. You'll mostly only find it for sale online (Etsy has several options), and it can be more expensive (especially factoring in shipping). Prices on the compostable elastics I found were comparable to a mid-range polyester elastic at Spotlight (before shipping). I think that's actually pretty good, all things considered. (I don't trust the cheapest elastic, it loses its stretch ridiculously fast. A fact I discovered to my sorrow only after buying a 20m roll of it.)
As a bonus, supposedly natural rubber elastic lasts longer than synthetic elastics - this has been my experience with many natural vs synthetic things, but I haven't tested natural elastic specifically to know for sure.
The biggest downside here is the rubber - if you're dealing with a latex allergy, this is not the solution for you.
Hooks and Eyes
While these have fallen out of favour over the years, they do have their uses in a compostable closet. They're easy to buy, and easy to make if you can get hold of the wire - all you need is a set of needle-nose pliers.
Being metal, the hook/eye can be re-used until it breaks - which takes a while. Like buttons, they're easy to take off a garment and move to another one. Unlike buttons, they don't need a buttonhole - you can move both the hook and eye almost anywhere on a garment, really refining the fit of an item.
They are, however, somewhat limited in that application - hooks and eyes work best if they're under a small but constant amount of tension, pulling in opposite directions. I once tried to use hooks and eyes on a loose-fitting medieval tunic, and it just didn't work.
Laces and Ties
Before buttons became The Big Thing in medieval Europe (and for quite a few centuries after), laces and ties were the closure method du jour. Why did they stick around so long? The same reason pyjama pants often have a drawstring in them - they add adjustability to garments in a simple and easy to use (and create!) way. Stays and corsets are one of the most recognisable examples of this concept in action.
Lacing does work better on some things than others, but just about anywhere that you'd put elastic nowadays can likely use a drawstring instead. And there are some patterns (YouTube link) for adjustable garments that use lacing as an integral part of the design.
The main downside for me? They can be slow to use, and awkward, if you have difficulty with fine motor control. Mine is variable enough that I'll usually opt for a different closure, unless lacing or ties really is the best or only option.
Snaps
Confession: I adore snaps. They're fast and easy to use when my hands don't want to co-operate, and they can be wonderfully decorative as well as functional.
There are two general types - those you sew into place like you sew on hooks and eyes, and ones that are applied to the fabric using a press. The former takes more time to install, but can be replaced relatively easily if they stop working. The latter can technically be replaced, but it's a LOT harder and you risk damaging the fabric behind it while you try. They're also more likely to rip out of the fabric in the first place.
As for material, it's pretty much just metal and plastic (sometimes a combination). From a sustainability standpoint, metal is the better option - as long as you recycle it at the end of its life.
Zips
Zips are everywhere nowadays. They're easy to use, but can be hard to replace when they break. Putting them in correctly isn't always a cake-walk either. And in terms of compostability, the answer is definitely "no".
The vast majority of zippers on the market use a polyester or poly-cotton tape, with plastic or metal teeth set into it, and plastic or metal tabs and pulls. Because of the mix of materials, and the size of a typical zip, most municipal waste streams can't take them for recycling. However, textile recyclers` such as Upparel usually take zips (and the things they're attached to!).
I also found a couple of different manufacturers creating zips out of post-consumer recycled materials - a pleasant surprise, and a strong move towards closing waste streams.
[`]: Clothing retailers are increasingly taking responsibility for their part in reducing waste by offering recycling programs through their stores. Recycling Near You and Frankie list some of the major programs in Australia, though it's worth noting that most of those listed only want whole textiles or large pieces - to my knowledge, Upparel is the only place that will take scraps, broken textiles, and related.
If I've missed a closure type, or you know of places selling compostable or truly recyclable versions of any of the above, I would love to hear about it. While I'm (currently) a far less prolific sewist than the blog name implies, I want to be deliberate and thoughtful in my sewing choices going forward.
Also, as a last random thought, I wonder if anyone has started making bioplastic versions of any of the above? *Wanders off to do some research...*

I’d love to see a post about dental care, as someone with depression and sensory issues.
Warning:
I am not a dentist.
All of these accommodations cost money ( generally ~$2-$5)
The reference photos I use are all brand names. You do not need brand name floss
Many of these might have recycling concerns
I am an American living in an urban and well-off area talking about products *I* think are accessible and easy to find.
It's plausible everyone already knows about these things, I'm just saying I didn't and they were game changers for me.
Also this will mostly focus on flossing because dentists don't seem to realize the dichotomy here is "give me an easier way to floss or I never will" not "floss with string like I want or I'll shame you until you give in." One exception though:
Disposable mini toothbrushes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(all images have description in alt text)
When shit goes left and you can't drag yourself out of bed, it's nice to have these on hand. Brush and spit in.
This is a better than nothing suggestion. Do not replace normal brushing with disposable breath fresheners. Please don't end up like that guy who interpreted generic you-are-depressed-and-valid posts as reason to skip dental hygiene altogether and racked up thousands of dollars in tooth repair surgery
Soft picks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros:
out of everything I'm suggesting, this is the most sensory non-abrasive - no plaque/spit splashback, none of the up and down string snapping, no pain/blood, even if you haven't flossed in a long time
almost soothing on your gums
If you struggle to floss because flossing feels bad, start here
easy to have with you at all times, some even come with a cute carrying case
Cons:
best for your front teeth; you can use them on your molars but their reach is pretty short
don't have the firm up and down floss motion so you're probably missing some plaque
Floss picks
Tumblr media
Pros:
easy to use
easy to place around the house and in your bag and just various places that might make you more likely to use them
more pleasant than touching the mouth germ string
kid version has fruit flavors
angled version specifically made for reaching the back of your molars, the most hated area of flossing
Cons
online dentists complain that you're dragging germs in one area to other areas which is bad, allegedly
online dentists also seem to think you use one pick for your entire mouth instead of using different areas of superior floss string. This is a little ??? And i think that's an expert's bias talking - these things shred and break, you'll likely use multiple picks for one session.
Long reach floss picks
Tumblr media
Pros:
this is basically the only way I've consistently flossed my molars
not having to look at my uncomfortably gaping maw or shove my whole hand in my mouth or stretch my lips back to reach/see my back teeth
makes a task i literally won't do (flossing molars) doable
Cons:
see dentist complaints for flossers
this particular brand is stingy with the extra floss heads
i find this particular brand's string snaps too easily
Gotta clean the handle thing
Lastly, interdental brushes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros:
can't find a consensus but these seem the most dentist-approved, lacking the previous criticism
really gets those nooks and crannies
More interesting to see the food carnage on brush than string
reusable? They often come with caps, suggesting they can be washed and reused. I'll be honest, i don't use these super often and have always tossed after one use. They aren't that sturdy
interdental brushes come in multiple sizes, catering to those with wide gaps to exceptionally tight teeth
Cons:
shortness hinders molar reaching
sometimes you scratch your teeth with the fine metal wire (except the GUM brand which I think uses a different, softer material)
These are my workarounds. I hope someone finds it useful!

I broke down how I would go about making Dimitri's new winter alt because I'm completely normal about it and not obsessed with him at all. (Also my spouse already emotionally committed to winter Felix and the designs match well).
I thought I would share because designs with a lot going on can be intimidating to break down, but going layer by layer and thinking about what makes sense for the garment helps me and is helpful to do if you get stuck or overwhelmed.
This one is on my list for AWA 2024, since it will be in December (and as much as I'd love to go to Holmat, there is no way my queer ass is going to Florida any time soon). I can't start this until I finish dancer Dimi and I'm still in goldwork hell for that.
Tumblr media
(I forgot his pants so further detail about that and also a breakdown of the layers more concretely below the cut).
Here's the most informative referece images we're working with (first one is just the clean version of the one above):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting with the inner most layer to outermost (because I think that's the most straightforward):
1) The Pants
There are a lot of options here, depending on what you're going for. It's cold in Faerghus so if you're going for most appropriate options, you'd want to make these out of a heavier fabric. They're not skin tight (you can see this in the second image more clearly), so I personally will stay away from stretchy leggings, but I don't think that would matter much aesthetically if that is your preference. You could also match these to the jacket material, but I personally don't want to make velvet pants. A nice, heavier cotton or linen would probably do the job nicely here. A heavier cotton blend knit would be a good choice, with an elastic waistband (basically you'd be making sweatpants). If you do a nonstretch, you don't have to go with an elastic waistband, but consider how easy it is to reach your closure for things like bathroom breaks. There is a seam (maybe a pleat?) on the front of the legs so that is something to pay attention to if you're going for maximum accuracy. I'd make this a seam on the stretch pants. I'd make these pants capri length so that there is enough to fit under the knee armor and top of the boot so it stays, but there isn't excess bulk in the lower boot, and probably finish the end of the legs with an elastic cuff like some sweat pants are finished. Pockets are unnecessary for this layer because you really can't get them under the layers.
2) The Boots
I'd buy a pair of knee high black boots with a very short heel. You could make boot covers, but I'd only do that if you had a hard time matching the finish. These don't look like suede to me, these seem like a smooth black leather/faux leather. The heels you could leave alone (they just won't 100% match), or paint gold. I tend to scuff up heels that I paint, so if you go that route make sure to be prepared to touch them up occasionally. The cuff with the fur I would add as a separate piece, trying to match the leather texture as much as possible. You could glue or sew this on (probably by hand) to the base boot, or make it removable with something like velcro. I'd personally just attach it permanently, since you have to add the stars on anyway, and I'm not likely to make those a temporary attachment, though you could. For the fur, you can get some fur trim, or use the same fabric as the cape and fur mantle. I'll touch on construction of the stars later, since they match the ones on the coat, but I'd just glue these onto the boot with a good glue (E6000 would be my first choice). Not every glue works for every material so you may want to experiment. Other options that might work would be contact cement or loctite (which makes a pleather glue).
3) The Knee Armor
I'd go with EVA foam for these. You could use worbla for additional sturdiness if you wanted, or even 3D print these if you'd rather model them yourself... but the foam may help with movement, as it will give where plastic will not. These will be sturdy enough though with a thicker EVA foam (5 mm?), with thinner layers for the upper ones. The accents I would make with a thinner foam and as the top layer. It looks like these are 3 layers to me (4 with the details). They remind me of Byleth's knee armor on the Enlightened One, which I have worn and can attest to them being very stable with just craft foam. Honestly I would just attach these to the cuff at the bottom, and add some strapping behind the knee that can open with snaps or velcro for maximum stability. You could also add a snap onto the pants at the front of the knee for extra security as well.
4) The Tunic
This is the blue layer under the red coat. It has a slit in the side seam (you can see it in the second picture) - make sure you keep that for mobility if nothing else. I'd make this out of a fabric that has a sheen, as it looks like it does in the art. If you wanted to be really indulgent, you could use a silk of some kind (I think you could use smooth or textured, depending on the aesthetic you were going for). I'd probably go for a nice cotton (a cotton sateen would be very appropriate), since this cosplay will be hot and that will help with breathability. A dull poly satin would also work in a pinch, or maybe even a crepe back satin. Lots of options here, I'd just go with nonstretch. Since this will be covered, you have options for neckline and sleeves. I think it would be a good idea to have sleeves, since the coat, depending on material, could rub. For the gold motif at the bottom, you have lots of options too. You could use heat n bond with a gold satin to make an applique, or you could use a vinyl fabric for an applique. You could do beading here. Iron on vinyl would also work (I'd go with the shiny metallic one). I'd just make sure this is shiny, ideally shinier than the tunic fabric. This is a festive costume after all, you can bling it up. I'd only worry about the front panel. You can ignore the back since it won't be seen.
5) The Coat
I really think this should be made out of a sturdy, nonstretch velvet (probably one of the home decor velvets). An alternative would be microsuede. Based on the art, I think some kind of nice sherpa would be best for the fuzzy edges, to contrast with the fur on the cape. The brown belts I would just make out of a pleather, with snap or hook and eye closures on one side. The stars, since I said I would talk about those (this applies to the ones on the shoes too), I would do out of foam, worbla, a combo of those two, or 3d print. I'll probably 3d print these since I have it on good authority that I'm getting one for Christmas this year. The gold lines at the sleeves and bottom you could do as a satin applique, beading, vinyl, or some combination. Iron on vinyl may or may not work with the velvet, you'd want to test that. I'd probably use a gold satin bias tape for the edge at the front of the coat, I think that would be the easiest thing and would look the nicest for that part.
6) The belt
This would have a secret closure at the front for ease of getting on and off without having to undo the belt. I'd interface the hell out of a red fabric (probably a satin, cotton/cotton sateen, maybe velvet), and add an applique of the green at the edges (or bias tape). I'd make the tassels out of a fine metallic thread or floss, personally. You probably want to stiffen these so they stay nice and clean. The star I'll talk about with the mantle. Metallic pieces on the belt would be a combination of foam, worbla, and/or 3d printing.
7) The Breastplate
My spouse has already made a breastplate almost exactly like this, thankfully. I'll be making this out of EVA foam, 10 mm for the larger layer and 5 mm for the bottom (which will probably just be attached at the bottom edge of the 10 mm layer so there is less bulk to worry about). The details would be a thin foam. It looks like the top motif is probably a fleur de lis. The chest star, which mimics his timeskip armor in houses, looks like it is convex rather than concave, so I'd make this out of foam and maybe fill in the underside with something just for structure. The plate itself would work like a reverse backpack, with buckles that would attach at the back to keep it sturdy. When I work on this I'll upload a picture of the breastplate my spouse made for reference.
8) The Scarf
I'd match this to the cape liner or the tunic fabric, so go for something with a slight sheen. The gold details I'd iron on or applique, and potentially add some coordinating rhinestones for sparkle's sake.
9) The Cape
The big, fluffy cape. I think the outside should be made from a heftier fabric, probably a microsuede. This would drape nicely and match the overall aesthetic of the costume. The liner I would match to the tunic or the scarf, so some kind of satin or sateen. I would probably go for the iron on vinyl for the stars of the liner, but you could do the satin applique strategy.... but that's a LOT of satin stitching to finish edges. Applique would work better for the stars at the bottom of the outside. You could also incorporate beads and/or rhinestones. This is festive after all... I'd get a nice fake fur for the edge, which you can match to the furry mantle.
10) The Mantle
This matches his houses design, based on the references, so you can refer to the in game art. Making this out of fake fur is the easiest option. My spouse attempted to make this by latch hooking yarn, but the brushing..... it will be less time and energy to go the fur route, but would be more money. For the stars, you could 3d print them, and gold leaf if you wanted a lot of shine. You'd probably want to hook these to the fur with invisible thread instead of gluing them, or you could match the thread to your gold paint. I'm also considering beading these on felt and I would attach them the same way, with invisible or matching thread. The one at the bottom of the belt you can sew or glue on, but I'd match construction to the mantle stars.
11) The Gloves
Technically lower in the layers than the coat, but awkward to put in earlier. These look like a faux suede or leather to me. I'd make them out of a nonstretch with a personalized, gusset-including glove pattern.
12) The Wig
It's a short, pale blonde wig. You might want a lace front with his hairline. But I think you can make it work without it... you'll have to do some styling with those bangs. This matches his pre-timeskip hair closely. The holly I would wire in to the wig after making, and use maybe beading or glitter an existing floral pick.
13) The Axe
I'm not a prop person, so this will be very basic. Pvc or dowel base, with foam, worbla, and/or 3d printed parts. The bow would look nice as a loop bow. You'd put the color blocks on there as previously discussed with bias tape.
That's my wall of words on that! I hope this was helpful to somebody. I'm planning on getting started on this one next year after some other costumes in the queue.
If you want to see a breakdown of anything else please let me know.

Tips And Tricks For Choosing The Perfect Family Beach Bag
Tumblr media
Choosing the best family beach bag can make or break your beach day experience. You need something that's not only spacious enough to hold all your essentials but also durable, convenient, and perhaps even stylish.
Here's a guide with some tips and tricks to help you select the ideal beach bag for your family:
Size Matters: Look for a bag that's large enough to carry towels, sunscreen, snacks, water bottles, toys, and maybe even a change of clothes for everyone in your family. However, ensure it's not too bulky to carry around comfortably.
Durability: Since beach bags are subjected to sand, water, and sun, durability is key. Opt for bags made from sturdy materials like canvas, nylon, or mesh that can withstand these elements and are easy to clean.
Waterproof or Water-Resistant: Consider whether you want a waterproof or water-resistant bag. Waterproof bags provide the highest level of protection against water, while water-resistant bags offer some protection but may not keep your items completely dry in heavy rain or if submerged.
Compartments and Pockets: Look for a bag with multiple compartments and pockets to help you organize your items. This makes it easier to find what you need without rummaging through everything in the bag.
Insulated Cooler Compartment: If you plan to bring perishable items or drinks, consider a beach bag with an insulated cooler compartment to keep them cool and fresh.
Comfortable Straps: Opt for a bag with comfortable, padded straps that won't dig into your shoulders, especially if you're carrying heavy items or walking long distances to reach the beach.
Easy to Clean: Beach bags are bound to get dirty, so choose one that's easy to clean. Look for materials that can be wiped down or thrown in the washing machine for hassle-free maintenance.
Lightweight: A lightweight beach bag is essential, especially if you have to carry it for long distances. Avoid heavy materials that will add unnecessary weight to your load.
UV Protection: If you're concerned about protecting items like sunscreen or electronics from sun damage, consider a beach bag with UV protection.
Sand-Proof Design: Some beach bags come with sand-proof bottoms or mesh panels that allow sand to sift through, keeping your bag cleaner and sand-free.
Versatility: Choose a beach bag that can double as a carry-all for other outings like picnics, pool days, or trips to the park. Versatility adds value to your purchase.
Style: While functionality is crucial, don't forget about style. Pick a beach bag that reflects your taste and complements your beach attire.
Budget: Set a budget for your beach bag purchase and stick to it. There are plenty of options available at various price points, so you're sure to find one that fits your budget and meets your needs.
Reviews and Recommendations: Before making a final decision, read reviews from other beachgoers and ask friends or family for recommendations. They can provide valuable insights based on their experiences.
By considering these tips and tricks, you'll be well-equipped to choose the perfect family beach bag that meets all your needs and ensures a stress-free and enjoyable day by the water.

Here's what you're saying it's not a coupe it's not a supercar it's not a muscle car and there's a classification that kind of fits in a little but it's his own car that he would imagine him making and it kicks ass there is a car that looks like this and it is a Camaro or a firebird and he wants to make a kit but you have to have new panels front rear and the quarters and the doors you can't do it with plantains you'd have to change the panels anyways you can do it on the doors and he says that's the way to do it once someone takes the doors off they'll never get them on right it would only be about 3/4 inch thick and we're going to do that and she's excited and we're going to do with you your wife is excited

I don't want you fooling around like that even though it's a good moment I'll tell you later why. You know why you're being good good wants to remember it it's damn hot in here he says. Okay that's a good sign you're making excuses but really you can't do that stupid s*** you're doing just planning on my window other people do I was wondering why you know I'm trying to make it like make sure you know that I'm not telling you anybody anything that's why it's good and here we go this is the look this is the car this is what we want and we make a kit for Camaros and Firebirds and it's going to be a nice kid the Camaro and Firebirds are too slow and you can't get a kit and make a Ferrari out of it it's too advanced and it costs a lot of money is not true but people won't like that and when they get in trouble too quick and the Ford GT is too aggressive that is a mega car and they don't want to do that and I tested that so we want to go ahead and start with this kit and there's a lot of these Firebirds out there and Camaros and the fire burns like a 350 and the Camaros too it's like a different number but they're real close and we are going to start to figure out how to make the kit and get some of our people on it and it is a refreshing kit because of the way it's made to take the panel off and the panel would you take all of them off goes right where the old screw holes were both holes and clips and you don't have to redo anything also what's really nice is you don't have to touch the interior that much there's no work that you need to do to your dashboard and you don't have to work on the hood and things like that that are real pain in the ass you don't have to type take apart your instrument panels or anything it's all very very simple it's not cosmetic cuz you're doing panels but when you replace it the metal doesn't qualify no it does but the fiberglass does not as part of your frame so attached to your fiberglass is going to be this metal subframe and that's what it is it's like a cage it's not very complicated and we do attach it right and the panels don't take long to make they're easy to handle cuz they have a frame on them it's very very sturdy and I was told that's how we do it it's a little different cuz other cars they have a cage is tedious and put all the stupid crap up but really the cage materials brilliantly strong it's just there's a frame system and that's what they require and it's not new used to do it and it works it's just probably a better way to do it at safer and it's nice people have trouble breaking and painting it it's still pretty tough there's a very good reason to get this kit one is it's a very attractive vehicle it is hot to look at and it's hot to ride in and people a enjoy it and it has a reputation you can see the rear end is coming down a little but it's a wide body and it was done correctly out of respect for the vehicle see you soon it's very nice we assume that and we think we're right the whole object is to make it faster for cheap money. We are talking about the firebird and Camaro I'm going to put that up next to it
The rear kid is a little harder they're pulling off all the panels and the trunk and we'll have to take a look in a moment but you want to keep the interior and it's on a Camaro and firebird and they're not really that heavy and they're decent looking it looks like a supercar to a degree and we have things you can plant on it and change the steering wheel and so on

How to Make Moving Easier for Your House
Moving to a new house can be an exciting but overwhelming experience. The thought of starting fresh in a new space brings a sense of adventure, but the logistics of packing up your entire life and relocating can be daunting. However, with proper planning and organization, you can make the moving process much smoother and less stressful. Here are some tips to help you make moving easier for your house Packers And Movers Noida
Create a Moving Checklist
Before you start packing, it's essential to create a moving checklist. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't forget any important tasks. Write down everything that needs to be done, from notifying utility companies to packing up each room in your house. Breaking down the process into smaller, manageable tasks will make it feel less overwhelming Packers And Movers Noida
Declutter and Donate
Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter your home and get rid of items you no longer need or use. Go through each room and separate your belongings into three categories: keep, donate, and toss. Be ruthless in your decision-making process and only keep things that you truly love or need. Donating items to charity not only helps others but also lightens your load for the move.
Pack Strategically
When it comes to packing, it's important to be strategic. Start by packing items that you don't use frequently, such as seasonal decorations or out-of-season clothing. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to, making it easier to unpack later. Use padding materials like bubble wrap or newspaper to protect fragile items, and consider investing in sturdy moving boxes to prevent any mishaps during transportation.
Enlist Help
Moving is a big job, and trying to do it all on your own can be overwhelming. Enlist the help of friends or family members to make the process more manageable. Not only will they provide extra hands, but they can also offer emotional support during this transitional period. If you have a lot of heavy furniture or large appliances, consider hiring professional movers to ensure a smooth and efficient move.
Notify Important Parties
Don't forget to notify important parties about your upcoming move. This includes utility companies, banks, insurance providers, and any other organizations that need your updated address. Set up mail forwarding with the post office to ensure that you receive any mail that is sent to your old address. Taking care of these notifications ahead of time will prevent any disruptions in service or missed correspondence.
Take Care of Essentials
In the midst of packing and planning, it's easy to forget about the essentials you'll need immediately upon moving into your new house. Pack a separate bag with toiletries, a change of clothes, and any other necessities you'll need for the first few days. This way, you won't have to dig through boxes to find what you need right away.
Plan for Pets and Children
If you have pets or children, moving can be even more challenging. Make arrangements for them during the move to ensure their safety and minimize stress. Consider hiring a pet sitter or asking a friend to watch your pets on moving day. For children, pack a bag with their favorite toys and activities to keep them entertained during the move.
Take Breaks and Practice Self-Care
Moving can be physically and emotionally exhausting, so it's important to take breaks and practice self-care throughout the process. Stay hydrated, eat well, and get enough rest. Take breaks from packing to go for a walk or do something you enjoy. Remember, moving is a temporary phase, and taking care of yourself will help you navigate it with more ease.
By following these tips, you can make the moving process easier for your house. Remember to stay organized, declutter, enlist help, and take care of yourself during this transitional period. Moving to a new house should be an exciting adventure, and with a little planning, it can be a smooth and stress-free experience Packers And Movers Mumbai

How to Choose the Best Outdoor Beanbags for Your Garden
Many homeowners like outdoor living. They buy alfresco furniture for their gardens. They want to relax outside. Wicker sofa sets are usual and predictable. Try oversized outdoor beanbags for fresh style. The blob shapes and colors energize patio spaces. The patio spaces are boring and need revitalization. Beanbags are more comfortable than metal chairs. They are perfect for lounging on weekends.
Some outdoor bean bags don't meet expectations. Learn how to assess important factors. These factors include weather-proof fabrics, spill-resistant treatments, hardy support structures, and frame warranties. This will help you avoid disappointment. Discover superb quality outdoor beanbags for your garden with these pro tips.
Tumblr media
1. Select All-Weather Resilient Fabrics
Outdoor bean bags for patios and poolsides should be sturdy. Otherwise, they may quickly deteriorate from sun, rain, and moisture exposure. Weather-proofing is important. Outdoor bean bags should have coated polyester or vinyl fabrics. These fabrics should be reinforced to withstand UV rays, abrasions, mildew attacks, and color fading without degrading over time. The seams are double-stitched to prevent fill from leaking out. Fabrics with a waterproof rating of 1000mm repel rain, splashes, and accidental submersion. They also retain their shape. Also, convince manufacturers to disclose fabric origins and compliance with strict Australian product safety standards. This will give you peace of mind.
2. Seek Stain-Resistant Properties
Outdoor beanbags are often near food and drinks. So, their fabric needs to be able to handle spills without getting stained. Otherwise, they will look bad very quickly. Quality models have a special formula that protects them. This formula makes the beanbag surfaces repel liquids like oils, juices, wine, and condiments. The contents inside are protected from moisture damage. Coated barriers make cleaning easy after messy gatherings. Compare official stain resistance ratings, if available. This will help you determine which outdoor beanbags can withstand abuse from kids and clumsy or tipsy friends.
3. Assess Supportive Filling Material
Pool bean bag filling affects comfort. Avoid flat, misshapen outdoor beanbags without support. Outdoor beanbags are premium. They use virgin polystyrene bead fill. This file is optimized for open-air use. High-density polystyrene is different from polystyrene derivatives. It doesn't absorb moisture or get compressed easily. It keeps its cushioning shape for a long time without breaking down. Sturdy liners stop bead leakage. Shapes stay evenly distributed. The fills are certified non-toxic and odorless. They also prevent irritants or smells from accumulating over time. Quality filling protects your enjoyment and investment.
4. Examine Frame Structures
Outdoor bean bags have inner reinforced frames. These frames help them keep their shape. Look for rust-resistant frames made of steel or aluminum. These frames should have double support bars to prevent collapsing when carrying heavy loads. Sturdy frames prevent fills from sinking and creating gaps. Inspect the stitching. The stitching should be durable. The seams should be tightly overlapped. The seams secure the bag structures.
Removable washable covers protect the inner structure from debris. They also prevent sand and soil buildup. This helps to prevent frames from deteriorating if not taken care of. Strong constructions designed for outdoor use ensure long-lasting durability.
5. Review Warranty Coverage
Make sure to check the manufacturer's outdoor beanbag warranties. They should be longer than the standard one-year terms. This will protect your investments. Good retailers have longer warranties. Frames have a warranty of five years and fabric has a warranty of two years.
Please check the policies for sun/water damage, pet claws, repair eligibility, and pro-rated refunds. This will help avoid making invalid claims on defects. Local Australian merchants are ideal. They offer direct after-sales support. Outdoor beanbaghelps ensure accountability for warranty promises. Stellar models have enduring performance and last many seasons. They go beyond flashy beanbag aesthetics to look at structural builds, fabric grades, and warranties.
Conclusion
By scrutinizing weatherproof fabrics, stain-proofing, robust filling density, rust-resistant frames, and generous warranties, discover that the perfect outdoor beanbag matching style and substance grows easily. Visit CushandCo to browse Australia’s finest built-to-impress years after purchase!

Make the Right Choice Between C and Z Purlins for Your Construction Project
Tumblr media
Building a sturdy structure is like having a strong team where every component needs to pull together with its weight. Purlins are no different, the overlooked sturdy construction components that support walls and roofs. However, selecting the ideal purlin profile (C or Z) is dependent on their associated abilities and style of play, much like selecting the ideal teammate. So that your next building project feels less like an attempt and more like an accomplishment, let's break down the differences between them.
Shape:
C purlins, with their simple, symmetrical "C" profile, excel at carrying vertical loads. Think of them as tolerant pillars that support ceilings and roofs with ease.
Z purlins, on the other hand, with their distinctive Z-shaped profile, are masters of lateral rigidity. Consider them to be strong cross beams that are capable of resisting earthquakes and wind pressures.
Strength:
C Purlins
C purlins are renowned for their robust load-bearing capabilities, making them well-suited for structures that require substantial support. Their ability to handle heavier loads, which becomes more pronounced with thicker and deeper profiles.
Z Purlins
Z purlins excel at providing reliable support for lighter loads and smaller structures. Their strength lies in being a cost-effective solution for projects where the demand for load-bearing capacity is less intensive.
Usage:
C Purlins
The 150 C purlin, is designed to accommodate and distribute heavier loads across its sturdy frame. This makes C purlins an excellent choice for large or industrial constructions where the demand for structural integrity is high.
Z Purlins
The ideal use of Z purlins is often seen in residential, commercial, or smaller industrial applications, offering a balance between strength and cost-effectiveness. This makes Z purlins a practical choice when the focus is on achieving structural stability without overengineering for excessive loads.
Versatility:
C Purlins:
C purlins stand out for their versatility, offering strong support for a variety of construction projects. They are well-suited for large industrial structures, warehouses, and commercial buildings. The 'C' shape allows for easy adaptability, ensuring sturdy support across diverse roofing and framing applications, from expansive industrial complexes to agricultural buildings.
Z Purlins:
Z purlins are ideal for smaller structures such as residential homes, garages, and smaller industrial buildings. Well-suited for lighter loads, Z purlins showcase flexibility in projects where achieving a balance between structural stability and cost-effectiveness is a priority, making them versatile components for various construction applications. Also, Unpunched Z purlins provide ample space for customization with holes and attachments.
Price:
As with any good partnership, budget plays a crucial role. 150-C purlin prices, for instance, will naturally be higher due to their increased material and strength. Z purlins, with their efficient design, often offer cost-effective solutions for lighter loads. Remember to choose a purlin that strikes the perfect balance between cost and the required strength for your project.
Find Your Perfect Match:
Navigating the purlin world can be tricky, but you don't have to do it on your own! Renowned Z and C Purlin manufacturers and suppliers in Australia, like Metal Building Products Direct, stand ready to guide you. With their expertise and dedication to high-quality purlins for structural support, they can help you in the selection process, ensuring you find the perfect purlin partner for your construction project.
So, whether you're building a grand warehouse or a small cabin, remember that understanding the strengths and differences between C and Z purlins is key to creating a sturdy and beautiful structure. With the right knowledge and reliable partners like Metal Building Products Direct by your side, your construction project will be a combination of strength and style. Choose your purlins wisely, and your building will stand tall and strong for years to come.

Compostable Clothing Closures
Originally posted at my blog: https://garaksapprentice.blogspot.com/2023/09/in-search-of-compostable-closures.html
~~~
Making clothes that are 97% biodegradable is surprisingly easy. Pick a natural fibre fabric, buy some 100% cotton or linen thread, and you're there. (You can even get 100% cotton overlocker thread - though you have to go searching for it.)
Those last few percent, though? That can be tough. One of the biggest offenders is closures. While there are plenty of clothes that don't need something to hold them shut, I confess I like having the option. Below is a round-up of various closures, and their compostability.
Note: for the purpose of this article, I'm treating metal closures as "compostable", in the sense that they're 1) easy to remove before you compost the rest of the object, and 2) infinitely reusable on other things, unless they break - at which point they're usually recyclable using our current commercial systems. And remember, re-using things that already exist is always preferable to buying new, "better" items.
Buckles/Rings
While less common than other closure methods, I find buckles, D-rings and O-rings are great when used in the right context. They're usually metal or plastic, neither of which are compostable - but metal will last practically forever, if it's good quality. Plastic tends to degrade over time, especially if exposed to the sun.
I find rings especially quick and easy to use, and a set of D-rings can give a very fine-tuned amount of tightening. My favourite belt uses two square D-rings instead of a buckle closure.
Buttons
The humble button, while ubiquitous now, took a while to catch on. Buttons as a common method of closure didn't become popular in Europe[^1] until about the early 1300s, around the same time that the tailoring revolution[^2] happened.
Nowadays, plastic is by far the most common material that buttons are made from. It's cheap and sturdy, but obviously it doesn't compost. So what are some alternatives?
Liz Haywood, a pattern maker who focuses on zero-waste designs, has thought a bit about this conundrum here. There's photos of several different DIY compostable and recycled buttons in her post.
For a completely compostable garment, wood, leather, horn, fabric, and thread buttons are your best bet. If, like most sensible people, you remove the buttons from something that's about to be worm food before you ditch it, the options expand considerably - metal, clay, recycled bottle caps, even glass buttons are all possible. You can have a lot of fun with making your own buttons - to match an outfit, or contrast with it, or maybe you'd like a different button for every buttonhole...
Another, related option is cufflinks - 18th century shirts often used cufflinks on the sleeves and one or two small thread buttons on the collar. That way one set of cufflinks could be used on multiple shirts, showing off a bit of wealth, while saving them from the (admittedly harsh) laundry practices of the day.
[1]: I have no doubt that buttons became popular in other parts of the world, too, but unfortunately I don't know much about it. Europe in the 14-15th century is my main area of study, mostly due to the fact that the historical re-enactment group that I'm a part of operates in that time period.
[2]: The tailoring revolution refers to the period where garments for the higher classes underwent a dramatic change in the way they were cut out. The very short version is, fashion garments shifted from primarily rectangular construction to more form-fitting, using the precursors of many standard cutting practices used today.
Elastic
While elastic isn't technically a closure, it's used that way in many different objects. Most elastic nowadays is made from polyester and synthetic rubber. No composting there.
But, all is not lost! You can now find elastics made of natural rubber and cotton! (I was quite impressed by this, to be honest. I thought I'd have to give up elastic for good.)
The downside, as is usual when you actually give a crap about the planet, is cost. You'll mostly only find it for sale online (Etsy has several options), and it can be more expensive (especially factoring in shipping). Prices on the compostable elastics I found were comparable to a mid-range polyester elastic at Spotlight (before shipping). I think that's actually pretty good, all things considered. (I don't trust the cheapest elastic, it loses its stretch ridiculously fast. A fact I discovered to my sorrow only after buying a 20m roll of it.)
As a bonus, supposedly natural rubber elastic lasts longer than synthetic elastics - this has been my experience with many natural vs synthetic things, but I haven't tested natural elastic specifically to know for sure.
The biggest downside here is the rubber - if you're dealing with a latex allergy, this is not the solution for you.
Hooks and Eyes
While these have fallen out of favour over the years, they do have their uses in a compostable closet. They're easy to buy, and easy to make if you can get hold of the wire - all you need is a set of needle-nose pliers.
Being metal, the hook/eye can be re-used until it breaks - which takes a while. Like buttons, they're easy to take off a garment and move to another one. Unlike buttons, they don't need a buttonhole - you can move both the hook and eye almost anywhere on a garment, really refining the fit of an item.
They are, however, somewhat limited in that application - hooks and eyes work best if they're under a small but constant amount of tension, pulling in opposite directions. I once tried to use hooks and eyes on a loose-fitting medieval tunic, and it just didn't work.
Laces and Ties
Before buttons became The Big Thing in medieval Europe (and for quite a few centuries after), laces and ties were the closure method du jour. Why did they stick around so long? The same reason pyjama pants often have a drawstring in them - they add adjustability to garments in a simple and easy to use (and create!) way. Stays and corsets are one of the most recognisable examples of this concept in action.
Lacing does work better on some things than others, but just about anywhere that you'd put elastic nowadays can likely use a drawstring instead. And there are some patterns (YouTube link) for adjustable garments that use lacing as an integral part of the design.
The main downside for me? They can be slow to use, and awkward, if you have difficulty with fine motor control. Mine is variable enough that I'll usually opt for a different closure, unless lacing or ties really is the best or only option.
Snaps
Confession: I adore snaps. They're fast and easy to use when my hands don't want to co-operate, and they can be wonderfully decorative as well as functional.
There are two general types - those you sew into place like you sew on hooks and eyes, and ones that are applied to the fabric using a press. The former takes more time to install, but can be replaced relatively easily if they stop working. The latter can technically be replaced, but it's a LOT harder and you risk damaging the fabric behind it while you try. They're also more likely to rip out of the fabric in the first place.
As for material, it's pretty much just metal and plastic (sometimes a combination). From a sustainability standpoint, metal is the better option - as long as you recycle it at the end of its life.
Zips
Zips are everywhere nowadays. They're easy to use, but can be hard to replace when they break. Putting them in correctly isn't always a cake-walk either. And in terms of compostability, the answer is definitely "no".
The vast majority of zippers on the market use a polyester or poly-cotton tape, with plastic or metal teeth set into it, and plastic or metal tabs and pulls. Because of the mix of materials, and the size of a typical zip, most municipal waste streams can't take them for recycling. However, textile recyclers[ ^3] such as Upparel usually take zips (and the things they're attached to!).
I also found a couple of different manufacturers creating zips out of post-consumer recycled materials - a pleasant surprise, and a strong move towards closing waste streams.
[3]: Clothing retailers are increasingly taking responsibility for their part in reducing waste by offering recycling programs through their stores. Recycling Near You and Frankie list some of the major programs in Australia, though it's worth noting that most of those listed only want whole textiles or large pieces - to my knowledge, Upparel is the only place that will take scraps, broken textiles, and related.
If I've missed a closure type, or you know of places selling compostable or truly recyclable versions of any of the above, I would love to hear about it. While I'm (currently) a far less prolific sewist than the blog name implies, I want to be deliberate and thoughtful in my sewing choices going forward.
Also, as a last random thought, I wonder if anyone has started making bioplastic versions of any of the above? Wanders off to do some research...
The Best Balance Bikes For Toddlers, According to PEDs and Parents
Taking the training wheels off is a milestone for kids learning to ride a bike. But training wheels aren't the only way to get them off and riding. Balance bikes allow toddlers to get a handle on motor skills sans pedals and training wheels, making them a popular pick for toddler gifts. "A balance bike is a training bicycle that helps toddlers learn balance and coordination without the use of pedals," says Dr. Daniel Ganjian, MD, FAAP, a board-certified pediatrician at Providence Saint John's Health Center. "Children push themselves along with their feet." Balance bikes traditionally have two wheels, but some may have four, particularly those for younger, wobbly toddlers still getting the hang of walking. The design and function of a balance bike offer benefits. "The benefits are similar to pedaling a bike - builds strength, improves balance and posture, and helps children learn spatial awareness and motor skills," says Kelly Moriarty, DNP, MSN, RN, an injury prevention coordinator at Novant Health in Charlotte, N.C. "It's also a fun physical activity that they can take part in for their entire life." USA Cycling also agrees that balance bikes are an appropriate way to get little ones bicycle-ready. But finding the best balance bike for your little one can be difficult considering the plethora of options out there. Whether you're looking for a balance bike for your 2 year old or an older toddler around the age of 4, there are few things you should consider when shopping for a balance bike. For starters, choosing one that is safe and effective is critical. Dr. Ganjian advises parents to find one that has: * A sturdy frame and quality materials * An adjustable seat height * Properly inflated, durable tires * Lightweight design (for easy maneuvering) Dr. Ganjian adds that the bike shouldn't have sharp edges, protruding parts, or a reputation for poorly designed breaks. Reviews can help, but Moriarty suggests double-checking things once the balance bike arrives, particularly that the fit is right for your child. "The child should be able to sit on the seat and have both feet touch the ground," Moriarty says. "The weight of the bike is also important, as you don't want it so heavy the child can't maneuver. It shouldn't weigh more than 30% of your child's weight." Monitor your child's growth to adjust the seat position as necessary. One final safety note from Moriarty: "Always wear a helmet," she says. "When you start helmets at a young age, children will learn the importance and be more likely to wear them as they get older." Based on expert advice and parents' reviews, these are our top picks for the best balance bikes. https://www.popsugar.com/family/best-balance-bikes-47656972?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
