hi!! i got my black belt in tae kwon do two days ago, and i'm pretty sure my instructors want me to help out around the dojang now (which i am more than happy to do!). i was wondering if you have any tips for instructing children?
Very late response I’m sorry! But I usually make things into games. Like “let’s see who can hit this pad the hardest” or “who knows the most patterns” and most importantly, remember that they’re children. You can’t be as hard on them as the adults and they’re there to have fun!
Hi, purple belt in Taekwondo here! I've always struggled with remembering my forms and being consistent with them. For my belt, I have to know Il Jang, I Jang, Sam Jang, Sa Jang, and Oh Jang but I feel like I forget them all the time.. tips?
Repetition is key! :) Also, I have some strange ways of remembering which form is which, and I’ll share! (Some are inside jokes at my dojang, but maybe this will inspire you lol)
Il-jang: (Bill-jang) 1 because Bill is number one (Bill is my dad, he used to be the head instructor before retiring 💯)
Ii-jang: Just kinda makes sense after il lol ✌🏼️Sam-jang: 3 because it has 3 letters 💅🏻
Sa-jang: it’s not 3 because there’s not 3 letters, so it’s gotta be 4 👯👯♂️
O-jang: 5 because if I had to wake up at 5 am I’d want some OJ 🍊
Yuk-jang: “Six is yucky” (not sure what 6 did to deserve this cuz it’s one of my favorite patterns, but it sticks 😂😷)
Chil-jang: 7 because you’re almost done, so you’re chill 😎
Pal-jang: it’s the end, 8, and pal is your friend! (I have a friend with a horse named Pal, and that somehow associates for me lol 🐴)
Once you remember the names, associating them with the moves will come with repetition and practice :) Good luck! (And excuse me if I spelled any of the jangs wrong, it happens)
The first thing you learn in martial art is respect. Without respect for yourself, your master, your peers, you’re not a martial artist. You’re just a fighter.
No one taught you that? So sad.
ATTENTION STANCE (차렷 서기) AND GREETINGS (인사)
This is the first stance you will get to learn as a Taekwondo student.
Your body stand up-straight, head facing forward. Your hands are parallel and touch your sides, fists closed (depending on the school, you can keep your palms straight). Your feet touch from heels to toes, also facing forward.
In class, whenever I say ‘Attention’ (charyeot), you should stop whatever you’re doing and get to this stance.
Next, you bend your body from 45 to 90 degrees. For beginners, I prefer you to bow at 90 degrees. For black belt students and instructors, you can bow at 45 degrees. If you’re at a lower level, make sure to bow lower and longer than the person you’re bowing to.
When do you bow? When you enter the dojang, in the beginning and the end of class, after I instruct a technique, before and after doing a poomsae or sparring.
Fighting thugs, that’s cute. Use emoticons, that’s cringe like my dad. These days he tries to sound cute with the ~ He sounds like a teenager more than me. Who taught him that? 😑
Fighting the master costs money too. My dad charges 250,000₩/session. I’m taking 10% commission fee.

@taehoon-taekwondo
That’s a lot of money.. He could have a lot of gimbap for weeks with that kind of money. Not to mention the money he needs for Mom. He would have to sell more shoes than he does now and take up more part-time jobs. Yohan can’t afford the lessons. He could fight thugs in those hours and perhaps improve in fighting that way, though it wouldn’t necessarily help him in Taekwondo.
“Tch. I’m not interested in lessons. I just wanna fight the master,”
