Dance local on Natl Dance Day - Sept 17
Tumblr media
Join us on Saturday, September 17th to celebrate National Dance Day with a special performance of Crosswalk Dances at Jarvis Square Artisan Market! Support dance for every body by visiting our bake sale - with a special bake provided by Charmers Café - or by making a donation as you enjoy a drink with the artists inside Jarvis Square Tavern.
Right now it’s more important than ever for us to meet our neighbors, build trust in each other, and come together with joy. Synapse Arts believes that dance has the power to build up our communities, and we need your help to make our classes and performances available to everyone. Despite the recent inflation, we are committed to keeping classes affordable, our community performances free, and paying our artists a living wage. Help us reach our goal of $2500 to support this important programming for Rogers Park and northside neighborhoods!
For 18 years Synapse has produced dance performances and taught students throughout Chicago, with a focus on underrepresented populations, most notably queer women, and dancers of varying economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. When you donate to Synapse Arts, you support:
Classes for young dancers for as low as $1.80/class, at Park Districts such as Loyola Park, Berger Park, and Lincoln Park
Free community performances at locations like Loyola Park, Howard Street, and Uptown Public Library
Mentorship and opportunities for artists from marginalized communities, including women, BIPOC artists, and people who identify as LGBTQIA+
Join us in person on September 17th or support Roger Park artists and communities by donating today. Thank you for dancing local!

ABOUT
Like the colorful outdoor artwork that will set the stage, Synapse Arts’ “Mural Dances” are site-specific public works that aim to enliven Chicago neighborhoods. Local artists as diverse as the city itself will engage audiences with choreography, costumes, and music in response to Chicago’s iconic neighborhood murals.
Mural Dances are intended to enliven neighborhood settings, connecting residents and visitors to the urban environment with the comforts and celebration of visual art, music, dance, and food. This series will celebrate the neighborhoods of Chicago through murals, dance, and music, bringing together local artists of many types.
By bringing joyful and intriguing professional dance-theater to under-appreciated and pedestrian spaces, we foster neighborhood pride and help to build more connected communities. Public performances of professional dance exemplify our core belief that everyone can dance and dance can happen anywhere, anytime.

Values Statement
While we're working on our new website, here is a temporary blog post that contains our Values Statement. This statement was created in 2019 with contributions from the Synapse Staff, Board, and Stakeholders such as artists, mentors, and teachers. We see it as guidelines for our work and our hiring processes, and we use it to measure our impact and ongoing progress.
These values live in conversation with our mission statement:
Synapse Arts creates, performs, and educates to nurture individual identities and challenge social norms by engaging artists and audiences in the making of dance-theater.
Synapse Arts Values
Dance is for everyone, everywhere
We serve all ages, identities, and income levels
We counteract the social justice and cultural challenges of people who identify as women/womxn and LGBTQIA+
We perform in all types of locations - parks, theaters, rooftops, crosswalks, lobbies, and living rooms
Freedom to create
We support the development of new work and the artists themselves, emphasizing under-represented voices
We employ a multidisciplinary approach in all programs
We focus on process over product, because dance becomes truly accessible when we nurture individual identities and challenge social norms at every stage.
Culture of respect
We strive to create spaces that are humane and collaborative with clear expectations for everyone
We work with empathy and are driven by artists and stakeholders who represent intersectional identities
We welcome all types of participation and build community through our artwork

Event Description
Our bi-annual New Works incubator program returns with two young dance artists who will premiere their original pieces to a virtual audience. Emerging from a field of 29 talented applicants, 2021 New Works artists Maggie Bridger and Rahila Coats were selected in January by our diverse and distinguished review panel. After working with their mentors in safe studio spaces provided by Synapse Arts, Maggie and Rahila are ready to unveil their moving and evocative dance creations on June 5 and 6, 2021.
Rahila Coats
With a body of work that often confronts personal narratives as they relate to consent and permission, Rahila’s pieces also draw from concepts of contact improvisation, play and fluidity in space. Since the winter, Rahila has been hard at work, collaborating with her mentor Jenn Freeman/Po’ Chop, a renowned Chicago-based performance artist. Rahila’s New Works piece is inspired by her connection with a grandmother who passed before she was born. Dealing with issues of race and gender, the work will also explore the relationships Black women have with their grandmothers - and the legacy of those connections, whether physical or spiritual. As a recent transplant from her hometown of Minneapolis, Rahila is excited to make her Chicago creative debut with Synapse Arts.
Maggie Bridger
As an accomplished dancer and PhD student at the UIC Department of Disability and Human Development, Maggie’s distinctive voice and unique artistic vision explore the generative potential of pain in creating movement. Collaborating closely with her New Works mentor Bryan Saner, a well-known creative artist, performer, and board member of Chicago Opportunity for Peace in Action, Maggie’ New Works premiere will invite the audience to question traditional ideas of the body in dance. Through the medium of film, Maggie’s work will explore her experiences with chronic pain. Incorporating themes drawn from her daily routines, the piece will delve into the practices that both mitigate and sharpen physical pain - both for herself and as she observes it in others.
What Is New Works?
Every other year, Synapse Arts invites dance artists and choreographers to apply for its pioneering New Works program. Up to three artists or artist groups are selected to create original pieces that reflect their unique voices - while sustaining the company’s priorities of diversity and inclusion. In addition to a stipend, New Works artists receive mentoring throughout the creative process, free rehearsal space, professional photos and videos, and more. Culminating in a final show for the public, participants also gain invaluable experience in performance production from planning and fundraising to marketing and ticket sales.

Rahila Coats plans to create work that stems from concepts of contact improvisation, patterns in popular culture, and our narratives as it relates to consent and permission. She is interested in work that surrounds the life and issues we embody, while recognizing differences in each of us. Rahila is looking to play, investigate, and find fluidity in space.

Maggie's project explores the generative potential of pain in creating movement. She and her fellow disabled dancers will think and work together to develop dance based in their embodied experiences of pain, ultimately hoping to offer alternative understandings of the role of pain in dance.
