anubis and wepwawet?

Anubis is the incredibly popular god of embalming and a psychopomp, who's duty it was to weigh the heart, prepare the body for the afterlife, and preserve the body. (Note, a lotta people have him down as a garden variety god of death, but he was in a VERY functional role, and Osiris is the bigger death god). His specific parentage is disputed, but largely because of the very important role he played in the afterlife, and the inner-syncretism the Egyptians loved all that much. The Old Kingdom says his original parentage is Set and Nepthys.

This parentage is shared, obviously, by his palette-swapped brother, Wepwawet, or Upauet. Probably the reason he's more obscure is bc his divine domain is LIGHTLY arrested at best. We mostly have written records implying he's a war god with a level of Pharonic power in his whole shit, though not as much Pharonic power as Horus or Sobek. He picked up some of his brothers psychopomp tendencies later on, and was even fully syncretized with him, but until the worship of Wepwawet fell away, they were still seen as two distinct gods.

If I'm permitted a foray into the thumbtacks and string zone, I'm of the opinion that Wepwawet was both a hunting dog and a pharonic companion, a mythological representation of the Pharaoh's ability to conquer both nature and enemies, bound up into a figure that was a life (and afterlife) long companion of the Pharaoh, paralleling Alebrijes. It's not too far a stretch to assume the hounds of the area were of interest to the Pharaoh as hunting dogs, and as many attendants and even pets were left behind for the Pharaoh, that relationship was supposed to last into the afterlife.

It would explain his original perview as well as his growth into a psychopomp, and would place him in a role separate from Anubis, though intimately entwined enough that their dualism in figure is notable. Frankly, anything more we could know about Wepwawet might be the little bit we need to gather a better understanding of him as a figure overall, but until then, scholarship will have some leaps and bounds to take.
