ooh i’d love to know if any moomin characters have become like icons for the gay community in finland or anywhere else where moomins are ultra popular
In Finland, Moomin in general is very important to the LGBT+ community. It has become increasingly common to know that Tove Jansson had relationships with women and that really elevated her works. But some characters are more focused on and promoted than others.
Usually characters that are appreciated as “iconic” would be Moomintroll and Snufkin. It used to be popular to joke about their relationship, but recently this has transformed into appreciating shipping. Too-Ticky is another popular character because of her androgynous design and increasing amount of people are becoming aware that Too-Ticky is based on Tove’s life partner.
