topics @ ihp DACA: A Dying Dream?
Tumblr media
On September 5, President Trump announced he would let protections for ‘Dreamers’ under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) expire and called on congress to find a legislative solution for the fate of around 800,000 registered recipients who have been living in the US since they were children and are now working or attending college or university. A popular move in some circles and an unpopular one in many others, the decision has enormous legal, economic, political, and diplomatic implications.
International House Philadelphia brings together an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the history of DACA, its arc from inception in 2012 until now, and analysis of and predictions for its future and the destiny of the 1.1 million people eligible for the benefits of the program.
International House Philadelphia hosts a dialog with experts Held in the South America Room, 2nd Floor
Featured Speakers include:
Alicia Kerber, Head of the Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia
Sarah Paoletti, Director, Transnational Legal Clinic at Penn Law and Practice Professor of Law
Adam Solow, Attorney with the immigration and nationality law firm Solow, Isbell & Palladino
Anel Medina, DACA recipient
Free and open to the public. RSVP here.

Students from Professor Jamie A. Thomas’ Spring 2017 linguistics seminar, Language and Identity in the African Experience: From Kenya to Mexico, recently completed a semester long project creating a podcast series titled AFROLATINX PODCAST™ and a informative and media-rich website companion Language & Identity in the African Experience.
AfroLatinx Podcast™ “features the voices of Latinx people, offering a series of podcast episodes and interactive web content that analyzes the interconnected expressions of language and identity in the African Diaspora.” More information on the creation of the project is available on the AfroLatinx Podcast™ about page: http://ds.swarthmore.edu/language-and-identity/about/.
The podcast was recorded in segments both on and off Swarthmore’s campus. Students utilized Garageband and Audacity audio editing applications to trim field recordings, record discussions, and mix final tracks for their podcast. These files were then uploaded to soundcloud for hosting, sharing, and embedding into a website developed with guidance from Swarthmore College Librarians. As mentioned in the ITS blog post, Podcasting in the Academics, Garageband is a powerful, easy to use tool that is a perfect introduction to podcast creation and is assessable on all Mac computers. If you’d like to know more about the technical side of the AFROLATINX PODCAST™ or how to implement a podcasting project within your courses please contact your Swarthmore Academic Technologists at [email protected]
