my favorite thing about revolutionary girl utena is that finishing it changes you fundamentally as a person and both you and the characters will be haunted by the narrative and its impact forever. my second favorite thing about revolutionary girl utena is that one episode where nanami nearly gets her shit rocked by a renegade boxing kangaroo on school property

Okay, it circled my mind enough I had to try and design them in the style of the other Welsh Arthurian characters I did (using these same tags, if you want to see them)
It's not actually clear what the oldest form of this name is (could be Latinised "Drustanus", surprisingly could be "Tristan" itself) but "Drystan" is most common in medieval Welsh sources; this and his father's name "Tallwch" correspond with the Pictish names "Drest[an]" and "Talorc[an]", so I'm leaning towards interpreting him as a Pict, hence the tattoos.
(Historical rambling and more gay shit below!)
The blood thing from Ystori Trystan is a bit vague:
One of the peculiarities of Trystan was that whoever drew blood upon him died, and whoever Trystan drew blood upon died also.
I've chosen to interpret it as poisoned, hence his design; the tight bodysuit held by metal bands prevents accidental contamination to friends, while the lack of armour makes it likely that enemies *will* cut him in a fight (i tried a version with a tabard or mail over the suit, but i prefer the simplicity).
Pictish tattoos might have favoured animal designs so I went for an impression of claws gripping him, which feels appropriately menacing
At the last second I remembered he's one of the Three Diademed Battle-Leaders! He's also one of the Three Powerful Swineherds, Three Stubborn Ones, and many other things including the above-mentioned shapeshifting, but we don't have time for any of that, let's talk about Gwalchmei.
Not so much weird supernatural stuff with Gwalchmei (or Gwalchmai). He's just nice! He's "the best walker and the best rider", but most of all he's a peacemaker, one of the Three Golden-Tongued Knights. So I came back down to earth with some actual Romano-British clothing, but I also realised I've got all these twinks, I should have a bigger guy, so I put some body fat on him.
His name contains the root "gwalch" = "hawk", so I tried to fit some bird imagery in, at first on his brooch, then when that didn't look right on his sword. The final one looks pretty super sentai haha. So instead I made the brooch sun themed, as a nod to how the French Gawain is stronger at midday.
And here's the gayboys in the thick of it, which is what I wanted to draw from the beginning, but obviously had to design them first. And in the end some of the design sketches look better than this! Ah well, I'm not an artist, I'm just a person who reads too much medieval poetry.
My conviction that OG welsh folklore Arthuriana is the best version has only been strengthened by the discovery that its version of Tristan (of "and Isolde" fame) has cursed poison blood and can shapeshift
