can you talk a bit about the parallels between “someday” and “maybe”? idk if i’m going crazy but those two work so good together and i wondered if there was some context to it behind the lyrics and chord progressions
YES!!! the first thing i came up with was the first stanza of Maybe, "there's a ghost in my room at night when i sleep / i should be scared but im intrigued / cause it sounds a lot like you and looks a lot like me" and it came from thoughts about a friend i had who i fell out with and in the aftermath i realized how much of myself was actually just them.
once i finished Maybe i was like hmm. could be slower. could be heavier. and i am a sucker for songs that are counterparts for each other so i wrote Someday which is a slower and heavier version from more of an acceptance perspective on the situation rather than grief or even curiosity.
since then ive written a bunch of paired songs, enough that i have a full scrapped album that was going to be called Honesty In Counterparts. some of those songs will see the light of say and some wont. ive got a lot of details im working on.
so yeah! i love love LOVE themes/callbacks/connections etc. i wrote Someday as a darker, more pensive version of Maybe. turned out pretty well.
