Rory immediately stiffened, looking like a deer caught in the headlights. How did someone even FIND them, out here in the woods? The shifter hadn’t been careful enough, they guessed, and now a human found them. They turned to face the other, pupils shrinking back to the size of pinpricks while scanning her over warily.
“Technically, uh– a deer shifter,” they began a hand moving to scratch at the back of their neck. “W-what exactly are you doing here?”

Not his favorite topic to speak about, if he was honest. Especially since he was, one of the people who a SOUL for the king. He didn’t say it, but she was sure he got what he was implying and if she didn’t, well someone would be more blunt with her soon. He gave a bit of a shrug at the question.

“What’s your name? M... mine’s Rory.”
Rory’s face was pale, their eyes peering down at the ground. Small talk wasn’t their strong suit, but they wanted to be kind. Even if they’d end up dead down here, they couldn’t harm anyone. And as much as they’d wanted to run off, Rory also just wanted someone to talk to, at least for a little while. They fumbled with the hem of their shirt anxiously, fixing their gaze back on the other.
“There isn’t a way out of this place, not for me. R-right?”

Bad question. A fair question, but she wasn’t going to like the answer, at all. He would have thought, considering she was this far, she might have realized the humans that had been down here aren’t just, living it up down here. He was silent, closing his eyes.
“…they met the king.” Well, a few of them did, but it all ended the same way.
They met the king. The tone in the other’s voice only made her fear spike, and a small lump formed in her throat. Did... that mean what she thought it meant? Rory’s stomach was in knots, and she could feel herself growing dizzy. She needed to escape this place.
“A-and who are you...? A friend of the king’s?”

Well, he couldn’t really stop from laughing now. Her reaction was way too funny for him to not laugh, considering he was already trying hard enough to not. So, a good chuckle fit later he was ready to actually reply to her. And at first, he gave a shrug.
“so? you’re still new. ya think humans are common under a mountain fulla monsters? actually, we’ve had more than ya’d think.”
“W-wait, you’ve had MORE humans here? What... happened to them?”
Rory’s shoulders stiffened as they watched the skeleton with wide blue eyes. Something in the back of their mind was telling them to flee, but their legs felt glued to the spot.
