Hearing the woman start to maneuver her way through the maze of fragile card towers had caused tension to arise in Near’s shoulder, dark, glossy eyes turning over a shoulder to watch her closely. Had she knocked any over there would surely be a domino effect that circled the entire room, each card falling to the floor in an unorganized mess that would leave Near in a far less helpful mood. Upon finding she had circumvented any chance of causing disaster upon their first meeting, the signs of the detective’s caution melted away.
Listening closely to the explanation of the case at hand, Near was already making considerations as to whom the suspect may be. Familiarity with ghouls and their behaviors as well as evidence left behind at scenes that involved them was greatly overwhelmed with the CCG’s influence and thus the detective had previously never had the need to involve himself. Now that he was, it was suddenly necessary to take into account both human behavior and what was known about Ghoul behavior to solve this case.
Tumblr media
“Hm...” Near hummed lightly once Miss Yonebayashi was finished, gently placing another card on top of two peaks. “Since these missing persons and murders don’t have any obvious connection to Aogiri Tree, we can continue under the assumption that is true until evidence tells us otherwise.”
Another box of playing cards was taken from the pile next to him, the cardboard opened and the stack pulled free. Near placed it neatly by his feet for easy access before placing the empty box on his other side along with the others that were kept there. “... Was it known whether or not the mothers were ghouls? It is entirely possible that they were using their families as cover -- please check whether or not their children are blood related or only related by adoption, and please look into the reason the ones without spouses were single-mothers. If those spouses were killed or went missing under suspicious circumstances it become more likely that the mothers were involved in these crimes.”
If Saiko had not, from a very young age, been thought to be much younger than she was because of her height and appearance…well, she might have just underestimated this guy at first sight. Considering she couldn’t say a thing about height or youthful appearance without it being the finest form of hypocrisy, she remained silent though, wandering forward through the strange array of cards with an expression that feigned boredom; this guy had a lot of time on his hands, didn’t he?  Her gaze was drawn to him again from wandering the course of the room once introductions were made. If anything, she seemed a bit nonplussed to meet one of the world’s most famous detectives, but hadn’t she always been more into horror stories than detective mysteries? Or she just didn’t understand the magnitude of the effort that the CCG was going through to seek out his consultation.  “Right,” She noted, lifting the folder under arm, twin tails bobbling as she set the suitcase of the quinque down between her ankles and out of the way, flipping through a few pages.
Tumblr media
“So, the case we’re working on isn’t involved with the Aogiri Tree,” Did Near even know of the ghoul criminal organization? It was best to clarify regardless. “Or at least, we’re pretty sure it’s not. Over the last few months, there’s been a string of missing persons cases that we haven’t been able to connect to them, or any of the known ghoul trafficking rings for the human black market.”  She turned a page, making a subtle face at the number of attached, gruesome images. “It’s always families, though whoever attacks them usually kills the husband if there is one, and the children of the house. The wife or mother isn’t found with the bodies, though, and there’s no trace of their blood at the crime scene.”

“Rest assured this phone line is secured and untraceable by anyone outside of my agents.”
Tumblr media
However, Near did understand what could come about if the woman remained where she was and stayed connected to the detective -- both were unaware of who was around her position and who may have been listening by ear only. Whatever she may say aloud and in the open could very well tip off the second ℒ of their unofficial alliance; unintentionally or not.
Behind Near sat Gevanni and Lidner and with a subtle motion of their superior’s hand they stood and headed for the door. With a quick elevator ride down to the underground parking structure, the pair would be on their way to the location of Misora’s cell phone, which blinked on a digital map on one of the many screens that surrounded the room and provided a glow of artificial light to every crevice and corner. Commander Rester remained seated not far away at one of the monitors, waiting for his own orders and keeping a close eye on the situation in the mean time.
“Two of my agents are on their way to your location; please remain where you are.” Near paused, waiting for the statement to sink in and hopefully alleviate her hesitation about sharing what information she had about the case.
“They are going to blindfold and search you before allowing you into their car -- and they will bring you back here in order to meet with me. Then I will do my best to convince you that I am ℒ’s successor, or you may make your own conclusions when you arrive here.”
despite the fact she was finally speaking to someone on the same side ( though, she still had a small suspicious they could be another imposter, the fact they know her real name when she’s been carefully hiding it was a bit clue ), was a bit of a relief, the former agent didn’t relax. she still didn’t feel very comfortable speaking over the phone to anyone about her information and suspicions.
of course, she was aware of the fact that this Near probably already had a big chunk of this information. if he is, in fact, the next in line for  ℒ then he had to be wicked smart. and  ℒ would have figured it out. but there was a part that she had a feeling some weren’t aware of. something she only knew because of her close relation with a victim. because of Raye.
Tumblr media
“ near. ” she started, pausing as she glanced around her location quickly, always alert and aware of what’s happening around her. “ the fact you are aware of who i am helps discard some suspicion i have. with the impostor posing as ℒ, you should understand why i’m less inclined to believe right out what you say. but, considering the facts. ” she trailed off, starting to walk down the side walk again.
“ i’m not very comfortable with speaking                                            of sensitive topics in a less than secure way. ”

“That’s fine. I never claimed to think of myself as ℒ’s equal.”
While at Wammy’s Near had been the first only in name and in the eyes of those around him -- had he truly been worthy of the title he would have been named the true successor long ago. And yet he and his one-sided rival were left without answers.
So he was given nothing but a sense of vengeance to spur him forward and capture Kira for good.
Tumblr media
“... Together Mello and I have a chance of surpassing ℒ, but on our own..” Near found his words trailing off, leaving the remainder of his thought up for interpretation.
Tumblr media
He sat up quickly again, making the chair hit the ground with force, as he pursed his lips slightly. Near got straight to the point; not the way B would have done it, but that hardly mattered. ❛I am not frightened of Kira, nor do I fear for my life,❜ he stated, letting the pen fall to the ground. There was no fear for death, just the fear of the unknown. ❛Nor do I fear for yours, for that matter.❜ It was easy to relax again now he had gotten that out of the way, so he leaned back again.
❛Though, the reason of me being here is simple. I don’t think you are good enough to be L’s sole successor.❜

Though Near could understand the pressures on being a child of Wammy’s, he didn’t necessarily agree. Without the orphanage he would have been purposeless -- the detective’s innate lack of social experience would prove him useless to the rest of society. Despite all expectations, at least being able to do his part was a viable option with his upbringing as a successor.
That wasn’t to say that others were in the same boat; many other children were perfectly capable of falling into line with social norms, it was Near’s own inabilities that denied him that opportunity.
Tumblr media
“Its Near. I don’t mind what you call me.”
Noticing the distaste that had laced the other’s tone upon mentioning Near’s predecessor, it had been easy to assume it was in his best interest to remain quiet on the subject. Curiosity was clear in the back of Near’s mind (Wammy’s children often saw ℒ with deity-like regard), but he left it be.
“ I suppose so— but between you and I, it was nice being away.” Specifically it was nice to be away from false EXPECTATIONS, really if they knew they’d fail anyway why put so much effort into ‘molding the next L’? god know they could be something else, they were supposedly ‘brilliant’ after all.
“ Twenty-four huh? hah— well I didn’t expect that actually.”  Allen found himself letting out a curt laugh, for a moment amuse with his own thoughts. Wouldn’t it be weird to have a 10 year old solving gruesome crimes all over the world? ( Then again that COULD actually happen…probably. )
“ May I know your name? aside from L anyway.”
The name tasted too BITTER, bringing out unnecessary memories in the pit of his stomach. Really, the letter OFFENDS him so much it’s ridiculous.

     “That’s fine.”

More than likely Mello would receive a lecture for his actions had he followed through with them, destroying property that didn’t belong to him, but Near didn’t really even take that into consideration. The blond wasn’t one to take rules to heart and so a talking to would do little to alleviate Near’s problem.
“I can find something else to do instead.”
Tumblr media
“Then I’ll just continue to hide those pieces, each time he buys a new puzzle for you. No matter how long it takes.”
It would be called a waste of time by most, and he’d probably be called crazy, but all that would matter in the end was the win. He would not give in to Near – he would never give in to Near, even when it came to something like this.
“Or maybe I should just burn them whole.”

“It can’t be helped, then...” A quiet sigh, barely audible and more akin to a simple exhale, escaped the detective.
