This is one of my favorite Sentai henshining sequences of all time. I am immensely impressed on how much they that worked hard with these early special effects around the 80s with no CGI to be put to use while it was young at that time, granted. But the way on how the Flashman henshin when they spread their arms out as stretching and being bathed by prism while the suits themselves flashing their internal circuits was out of this world. Plus the fact that we can still see their eyes when their helmets covered their faces, they shout, “Shut Goggle!” to bring in the visors and closing their eyes. It was a nice touch!

~ Chōshinsei Flashman: Review ~
Warning! This review contains some spoilers. In case of this series those were impossible to avoid. So, read this review only if you’ve already seen the series, or don’t mind spoilers.
Year 1986, Chōshinsei Flashman (超新星フラッシュマン)! At this point it started to be hard to surprise people with new Super Sentai series. Instead of “OMG, there’ll be more of those!!!” it started to be like “OK, there’ll be more… Big surprise, huh?…” And Chōshinsei Flashman isn’t making things simpler for audience. Because at first look it’s exactly the same thing with previous series - Dengeki Sentai Changeman (電撃戦隊チェンジマン). Both weapons and mecha are almost the same exact thing. Honestly, you won’t be able to find any differences between Change Swords and Prism Shooters, while the only difference between Power Bazooka and Rolling Vulcan is that Rolling Vulcan has a nice real-time animation. So, when you start watching the series, you can’t stop feeling sceptical. Like “Oh my, it’s more of the same…” I’m talking about the case in which hypothetical viewer will watch series in the right order, of course. Since Flashman started right after Changeman, it’s a huge problem. Even a lot of fighting moves looks exactly the same. So, you may react like “OK, I’ve already seen all this, I think I’ll skip this one”. And it’ll be a big mistake. For many reasons.
First of all, even though regular giant robo, Flash King, will be exactly the same thing with Change Robo (the only difference is that helicopter was replaced with AEW&C jet), there’s a huge surprise in Chōshinsei Flashman. For the very first time in Super Sentai series there’ll be… a second robot! And incredibly interesting one too! Semi-trailer truck called Flash Titan will be able to divide in two, its tractor unit will transform into a small, but fast Titan Boy robot, while trailer part can be combined with Titan Boy to create huge Great Titan. It won’t move, but its powerful Titan Nova beam will destroy even the strongest enemies. In other words, even though Flash King looks and feels old, there’s a lot of fresh and awesome stuff in this series. And since Toei fixed poor battles of giants and now those are very interesting, all that is just great.
Another strong point is a story. Villains this time will be another evil scientists, so-called Kaizō Jikken Teikoku Mess (The Reconstructive Experiment Empire Mess). Which feels like another old idea and, even though there’s a lot of secrets and mystery about Mess and their stories are really nicely written, the best thing about Mess is design. To create monsters, Mess using so-called Gene Synthesizer, synthesizer that can mix and “reconstruct” various life forms. Really nice and interesting idea. But the most interesting thing about Chōshinsei Flashman is Flashman team itself.
One of the biggest problems about Dengeki Sentai Flashman was lack of backstories for heroes. All of them were in the same boat from very beginning and therefore it was like there was nothing special about them aside of their strong personalities. In Flashman Toei fixed the problem. Even though Flashman members are in the same boat from very beginning too, they have some personal backstories too. Flashman are kids, who were kidnapped from Earth by so-called Alien Hunters (by the way, Alien Hunters is a very nice addition to regular villains) 20 years ago for Mess. And now, when Mess appeared on Earth, Flashman team, who ended up raising by people of Planet Flash on different stars in different conditions, decided to return to their home planet to protect it.
It’s an interesting story already, but there’s actually more in it. The thing is - Flashman can’t stay on Earth. Since they were raised on Planet Flash, their bodies can’t stay on Earth for more than a year. Which is a huge tragedy for our heroes, who wanted to return to their home planet, to find their real parents and to live happily. In the end, they’ll need to abandon all tha hopes, just because they can’t be a part of their own home anymore. It makes Flashman a very bitter story and also remind you about J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai, in which heroes were people with broken hearts too. Especially since it’ll be Flashman to make a final choice, because evil Dai Hakase Rī Keflen will offer them an ability to stay on Earth in exchange of their loyalty. So, even though there will be no way for our heroes to agree, it’ll be their choice to say no.
But the best thing about the series is that Flashman is still young boys and girls (well, in 80s 20+ meant young, things changed, but that’s another story). Since all of them were kidnapped as a small babies and raised and trained on empty and dangerous stars (every member connected with his respected star by a special gem called Prism in his helmet and can transform and become stronger thanks to it), they’ll see Earth properly on the very first time. The most simple things will make them happy. Things like warm wind, balloons and homemade food. Through their eyes we’ll be able to see Earth in different light. Flashman is one of those stories, which will try to show us that there’s a lot of miracles around us, in our daily life. All we need to do is to notice them. That’s the best thing about Flashman. The fact that it’ll make you notice how beautiful our planet is.
And there’s more about Flashman being raised on Planet Flash’s stars. Unlike a lot of other teams, Flashman will be able to fight without their suits. Many years of hard trainings on distant stars gave them some unique special powers. Jin (RedFlash) will be able to detect heath through walls, Dai (GreenFlash) will be extremely strong, Bun (BlueFlash) will be able to climb on walls like Spider-Man, Sara (YellowFlash) will be extremely intelligent, while Lou (PinkFlash) will be able to fly. Time to remember J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai again, in which cyborgs were able to use various gadgets in their bodies and also were very strong without their suits.
As for Flashman, you should have noticed that yellow and green colors returned to the series, but what’s really interesting here is names. None of Flashman team knows their real names. So, it’s just Jin, Dai, Bun, Sara and Lou, nothing more. Thought that’s enough already? There’s actually more - amazing helmets! This time helmets will get some nice animation again (remember Chōdenshi Bioman / 超電子バイオマン’s helmets?). This time helmets will get cool animated visors. When Flashman members transform, visors will be opened. So, they should command “Shut Goggle!” to close them and it looks absolutely amazing!
Actors doing great. And it’s important for them to be good like never before, since every moment on Earth is personal for every Flashman member and there’ll be a lot of small details that makes series special. In one scene, for example, after learning that there’s no more time for her on Earth, Lou will hug rocks like she don’t want to let them go. Scenes like that makes the series, create its own unique face. It’ll be unfair thing to try saying who’s the best actor in series, but Ishiwata Yasuhiro-san (石渡康浩) and Nakamura Yōko-san (中村容子) touched my heart the most. Probably because those two got the hardest roles in series. Ishiwata-san will play Bun, youngest and the most sensitive member of Flashman, whose heart will be opened for the whole beauty of Earth, while Nakamura-san will play Sara, the only one who’ll find her family and the one to make a choice to abandon them to be able to destroy Mess. These two will make you cry for oh so many times… Amazing work! And there’ll be some nice surprise too. Hagiwara Sayoko-san (萩原佐代子), who played Tachibana Rei, aka DynaPink in Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (科学戦隊ダイナマン) returned as a villainess Le Nefer! She did great and it’s really interesting thing to see how she playing villainess after a heroine.
As for suit actors, it’s pretty simple this time. It’s exactly the same team of suit actors that worked on Changeman. Narrator, though, will be changed again. This time it’ll be Onoda Eiichi-san (小野田英一), who’ll be the best since Ōhira Tōru-san (大平透) in my opinion. Maybe just because his way of telling the story fits very nicely to sad and touching Flashman story, but still. He isn’t Ōhira Tōru-san (大平透), of course, but he isn’t supposed to be.
Soundtrack is nice too. Main composer this time is Tanaka Kōhei-san (田中公平), who’s incredibly famous composer now (for example, he’s one of composers, who creates music for ONE PIECE anime adaptations), but in Flashman you’ll be able to hear his early works. Also, some songs will be written by Takekawa Yukihide-san (タケカワ ユキヒデ) and Arisawa Takanori-san (有澤孝紀). You may know Takekawa-san by his works for Ginga Tetsudō 999 (銀河鉄道999) movie and Kikō Sōseiki MOSPEADA (機甲創世記モスピーダ) and Arisawa-san by his legendary music for Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon (美少女戦士セーラームーン). So, imagine the quality of Flashman’s soundtrack.
I can’t say that it’s the best OST in Super Sentai, though, since it feels like there’s a lack of certain something in it and it feels a lot like composers tried to work with regular Super Sentai template, instead of trying to make something fresh and new, but still, it’s great. Especially since Miyauchi Takayuki-san (宮内タカユキ), who was a main performer in Bioman, returned to perform one of the songs (Kagayake! Flash King / 輝け!フラッシュキング). Main performer this time won’t be him, though. It’ll be Kitahara Taku-san (北原拓) and even though I’m a huge fan of Miyauchi-san, in my opinion Kitahara-san was the best choice. Why? Because he was young. He was only 15 when he started to work on songs for Flashman and since Flashman are young boys and girls too, such a young performer fits absolutely perfectly. It’s like you can feel the youth itself in his voice.
And that’s it. Even though Chōshinsei Flashman may look as copy / past from Dengeki Sentai Changeman at the first look, it’s amazing, beautiful and extremely touching story about youth, courage and beauty of our planet. Nicely written, nicely directed, nicely performed. Make sure not to judge it by the first few episodes and wait until series will show you its depths.

Binge-Worthiest K-Dramas of 2020
Before Parasite created an international buzz by literally sweeping all the major categories at the Oscars (including best film), Asian culture and a global (dare I say) obsession with Korean Pop Culture has been on the rise. Thanks to this wave you may have heard of the boy band BTS, developed a taste for Kimbap, have a 10-step skincare routine, and have jammed out to the lyrics “light it up like Dynamite” on the radio. Television dramas have also become an indispensable part of the cultural fabric.
From suspenseful thrillers to delightful romantic comedies, there’s always something you can expect (and not expect) from dramas: The male and female leads aren’t going to end up together in the end? Arranged marriages are still a thing? It took three episodes for the leads to hold hands and nine episodes for them to kiss? While all of this may sound a little ridiculous, especially if you are used to American television where mature content themes are available for young audiences, it’s common in Asian television. They carefully and tastefully use mature content themes to entice the audience as well as try to air the more mature shows at times when children should be in bed.
So without further ado, here are my favorite and most Binge-Worthiest Chinese and Korean dramas that aired this year.
So much to watch, so *much* time — amirite?
More Than Friends
Plot: Kyung Woo Yeon and Lee Soo have taken turns having a one-sided crush on each other for over ten years. Misunderstandings and missed timings have continued to keep them from becoming anything more than friends. While they finally confess and have a happy ending or will another misunderstanding keep them apart?

Fun Fact: Behind the scenes, videos from the crew share what it’s actually like before (or after) the cameras start rolling on set – it’s lots of laughter.
Tale of the Nine-Tailed
Plot: For centuries the mythical Nine-Tailed fox, Lee Yeon, has been eradicating supernatural beings that threaten the mortal world all while in search of the reincarnation of his lost first love. Talented television producer and urban myth obsessed Nam Ji Ah is on to him. Will Lee Yeon be able to save himself, Ji Ah, and those they hold precious from the wrath of the vengeful Imugi?

Fun Fact: Monsta X’s Shownu released his first solo OST in nine years as part of the Tale of the Nine-Tailed soundtrack.
It’s Okay to Not Be Okay
Plot: Moon Kang Tae, a health worker at a psychiatric hospital, and Ko Moon-Young, a children’s book writer suffering from an antisocial personality disorder cross paths, and together they follow the extraordinary road to emotional healing.

Fun Fact: Due to the popularity of the show, the children’s book featured in the show were produced and are currently available to purchase.
Record of Youth
Plot: Two actors and a makeup artist fight to make their way in the fashion and entertainment industries that weigh their economic backgrounds and social classes they were born into more than their dreams and desires to love.
Where to Watch: Netflix
Fun Fact: This was Park Bo Gum’s last drama series before his mandatory military enlistment.
Itaewon Class
Plot: A group of misfits lead by Park Sae-ro-yi in need of a second chance at life band together to achieve their dreams and seek revenge on the Jangga Company, the CEO and his son who destroyed Sae-ro-yi’s life years earlier (through expulsion, death of his father and prison).
Where to Watch: Netflix
Fun Fact: The writer of the webtoon that the show is based on, wrote the screenplay and script for the series.
Backstreet Rookie
Plot: Based on an adult webtoon, Jung Saet Byul, a former troublemaker applies for a job at a convenience store owned by the same man who she’s had a crush on for 3 years ever since he caught her smoking cigarettes with her friends underaged.

Fun Fact: Heavily criticized and even penalized for sexual innuendos, inappropriate and provocative scenes.
Flower of Evil
Plot: An emotionless psychopath changes his identity in an attempt to leave his dark past behind. Can he deceive his homicide detective wife and keep her and their daughter safe from his cruel past?

Fun Fact: Lead actors Lee Joon-Gi and Chae-won Moon previously played detectives at odds with each other in the Korean adaption of the American television series Criminal Minds.
18 Again
Plot: After losing his job, receiving divorce papers from his wife, and severely regretting his life, 37-year-old Jung Da-Jung gets a do-over when his body changes into that of an 18-year-old. Now, with his regained 18-year-old body, he changes his name and begins to live a new life.

Fun Fact: Lead actor Kee Do Hyun is a serious method actor and once broke up with his girlfriend to prepare for a role.
I’ll Go to You When the Weather is Nice
Plot: After a series of unfortunate events, cellist Mok Hae-won quits her job in Seoul and returns to Bookhyun Village to live with her aunt. There, she meets former classmate and neighbor, Im Eun-seob, and together, they try to survive the harsh realities of life, heal from their past wounds, and eventually fall in love.

Fun Fact: Lead actress Park Min Young is a muse in K-Dramas and is known as the queen of Romantic Comedy.
Search
Plot: Follow the story of the ruthless attack of an unknown creature in the Korean Demilitarized Zone and the search operation of an elite special force to uncover the truth.

Fun Fact: Actors playing soldiers filmed scenes with over 50lbs of real military gear on.
Into the Ring
Plot: Nosy, overzealous professional job hopper with a strong sense of getting involved in other people’s problems, Goo Se Ra decides to enter the ring by running for councilwoman of the District Assembly. With the help of stick-to-his-principles no matter what Seo Kong-Myung, can Se Ra get elected, stay elected and maybe fall in love?

Fun Fact: Nana and Park Sung Hung met up frequently before filming began to discuss the script, ideas, and more to ensure they had great chemistry that felt real on screen.
School Nurse Files
Plot: Ahn Eun-young is a school nurse with the power to see human desires, feelings, and spirits that exist in the form of “jellies”. Together with a fellow teacher, Hong In-Pyo, a man with a special energy field around him that protects him from jellies, she tries to solve these mysterious cases.

Fun Fact: While the first season only received a six order episode, it was recently renewed for a second season.
Start-Up
Plot: Young entrepreneurs aspiring to launch virtual dreams into reality compete for success and love in the cutthroat world of Korea’s fictional high-tech Silicon Valley known as Sandbox.

Fun Fact: Supporting actor Kim Seon Ho studied the field of startups, reading books, learning terminology, and watching various lectures to prepare for the role.
Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
Plot: An energetic, down-on-her-luck-riches-to-rags-(to-riches) pianist named Goo Ra-Ra and a mysterious, warm-hearted multi part-time worker Sunwoo Joon gather in La La Land, a small piano institute in the countryside with secrets, pain, and stories to tell.

Fun Fact: This drama was Lee Jae-Wook’s first lead role, a well-deserved honor as he recently won the Best New Actor award at the 2020 Asian Artist Awards.
The King Eternal Monarch
Plot: A modern-day emperor, Lee Min-Ho, obsessed with the mystery behind a police badge left by his childhood savior passes through a mysterious portal in the forest in the Kingdom of Corea and into Seoul where he encounters Violent Crimes detective, Kim Go-Eun.
Where to Watch: Netflix
Fun Fact: This drama signaled Lee Min-Ho’s return to acting after completing his mandatory military enlistment.
