Tony knew he couldn't outpace Cap, but God help him, he tried. He can look at himself in the mirror, and say he tried.
"But why not, Tony?"
Tony halted to look at Steve, who looked back at him with that hopeful, boyish yet charming, half smile of his. The exact same smile he gave after Tony fell from Loki's wormhole of hell. The one Tony absolutely couldn't say no to.
"Fine." He drew out the word to show he wasn't fine at all. "I'll join you at game night."

Hulk loved his friends. His friends were nice. They trusted Hulk and called him friend. They played with him, and Tony gave him good things to eat and never got angry if Hulk smashed, and Steve gave the best hugs.
But right now his friends made him that thing Banner always was. Antsy. Tony and Steve behaved strange around each other.
Hulk didn't quite understand what was going on, but Clint had tried to explain, and now Hulk decided to help.
He picked both of them up, and as gently as possible smooched their faces together.
"You kiss."
They did.

No verão, Steve conhece Tony pela primeira vez.
Tony é ousado e arrogante e toda vez que Steve oferece uma sugestão é não, você está errado, não, não podemos confiar em Fury e não, eu tenho um plano melhor. Steve cerra os dentes e tenta manter o rosto neutro mesmo quando quer dar um soco naquele capacete vermelho e dourado idiota.
Então o céu se abre sobre Manhattan e Tony voa para o espaço sideral carregando uma arma nuclear, o que quase lhe custa a vida.
No verão, Steve olha para Tony após a batalha e sorri.

No outono, Steve pega sua moto e sai de Nova York.
Tudo é diferente nessa nova realidade distorcida; os prédios são muito grandes, as cidades muito barulhentas e as pessoas muito distraídas com seus celulares. O mundo se move muito rápido e Steve não consegue acompanhá-lo, não importa com quanta força ele aperte o acelerador.
Steve desinstala os aplicativos de namoro que Natasha instalou. Ele quer algo real, algo mais do que procurar por amor como quem olha as vitrines de uma loja, ou do que ir a uma série de primeiros encontros com elogios vazios.
No outono, Steve senta-se em sua moto debaixo do céu noturno e deseja não se sentir tão sozinho.

No inverno, o Mandarim ataca a casa de Tony.
Por dias, Steve mal consegue comer ou dormir enquanto olha para o relógio e espera por notícias, odiando o fato de que essa é uma batalha na qual ele não pode lutar.
As ruas estão cheias de alegria e canções de Natal, mas nada o livra da sombra pairando sobre sua cabeça. Até que as imagens de um navio petroleiro semi-destruído são transmitidas no noticiário e o repórter fala sobre milhões de armaduras do Homem de Ferro explodindo como fogos de artifício.
No inverno, Steve chora quando Tony é confirmado vivo.

Na primavera, três helicarriers explodem sobre Washington D.C.
A SHIELD não existe mais e Bucky está vivo e Steve está caindo, caindo na água de novo no pior tipo de déjà-vu, exceto que dessa vez ele sabe que não vai acordar.
Mas quando Steve acorda no hospital, Sam está ouvindo música e Natasha traz flores e um dos buquês está assinado por T. Stark.
Na primavera, Steve se dá conta de que os Vingadores são o seu lar.

E no verão…
No verão, Steve e Natasha se mudam para a Torre dos Vingadores.
No verão, Pepper termina o namoro com Tony por causa do Homem de Ferro.
No verão, Steve pede aos Vingadores que o ajudem a encontrar Bucky.
No verão, Steve compra jacintos azuis para Tony, para se desculpar pelas desavenças que tiveram no início.
E no verão, Steve leva Tony à Coney Island.
Tony usa um disfarce ridículo e ri quando Steve joga uma bola com força suficiente para quebrar as latas coladas de um jogo fraudulento de parque de diversões. Steve segura a mão de Tony enquanto eles visitam o museu e Tony o beija na roda gigante.
No verão, Steve não se sente mais sozinho.

Tony knew that he was a deeply flawed person.
He had a laundry list of flaws to be exact, if he was being completely honest with himself.
Sometimes he wondered if he is good at all, let alone being good enough for someone like Steve Rogers.
Sometimes it would get really bad, so much that Tony would decide to break up with Steve, to give him an out and save him from himself.
Sometimes he would even tell Steve as much: that maybe he would be better without Tony.
Steve never had any of it.
