We want to make sure that you and your passengers are in safe hands as you travel down the road.
When performing the Virginia State Inspection, we look for a variety of concerns that could impact your safety.
This annual requirement spans components across the vehicle. The brake system is one of the areas that’s checked.
Different brake problems could cause a vehicle to fail the Virginia Safety Inspection.

Ignition coils and spark plugs sometimes need to be changed out due to age.
For a Kia Optima, ignition coil and spark plug replacement is recommended because an ignition coil boot is torn.
These were the original coils and plugs. Since this happened to one coil, it’s best to install new plugs and coils at the same time.

We performed suspension work on a Honda Pilot. One of the lower control arm bushings was torn almost all the way through.
The lower control arm supports the primary load on certain vehicles. If you don’t have a bushing, you’re going to hear and feel a large impact.
Eventually, that rubber deteriorates, which can lead to more movement and impact the wheel alignment. It could also affect ride comfort, create noise and become a safety issue.
If you are hearing abnormal sounds or noticed any changes to how your vehicle travels down the road, reach out to your auto repair shop.

Air conditioning repair was performed on a Hyundai Tucson last week.
Residue was found around a low side schrader valve. After our technician performed an evac and recharge, he saw that the pressures didn’t look right. We knew the a/c compressor wasn’t doing its job.
In addition to replacing the low side schrader valves and compressor, we installed a new a/c condenser and air conditioning expansion valve.
With outside temperatures starting to warm up for the year, it’s a good idea to make sure that your vehicle’s a/c system is working correctly.

Our vehicles need different kinds of upkeep to continue performing the way they were designed.
Wheel alignments are one form of maintenance that should be performed on a regular basis.
This service might not sound crucial, but it offers various benefits that can be seen in the long run. Helping your tires last by preventing uneven and premature tire wear is one perk.

A Ford F-150 was recently brought in for an oil change. During the courtesy check, we saw that the end of the rack and pinion was broken, due to hitting a curb or pothole.
This piece can crack, causing water and dirt to get in.
When your vehicle is due for an oil change, it’s a good idea to bring it to a mechanic. They are able to notice if anything is unsafe.

Brake caliper replacement was needed on a Nissan Pathfinder.
When he was disassembling the rear brakes, the technician noticed that the left rear caliper slide pins were seized in the caliper bracket. This prevents calipers from moving back and forth.
Checking the calipers is one part of our brake inspection. We also confirm that the bleeder screw opens and fluid can come out of it. They can seize or become clogged.
Our technicians look for cracked or torn dust boots and caliper pin boots, as well.
Another feature that’s examined is the piston. It’s important to make sure this component isn’t damaged and fluid isn’t leaking from the piston area.
The brake hose, which is attached to the caliper, is also inspected.

A bad part eventually led to catalytic converter replacement.
One of our technicians looked into an Audi’s check engine light. There were codes saying that the fuel rail pressure was too high and the catalyst efficiency was too low on bank 1.
With the scan tool, we found that the desired high side fuel pressure didn’t match the actual pressure. The oxygen sensors also weren’t switching correctly.
Due to a faulty fuel pump, the SUV was running incorrectly, which resulted in a bad catalytic converter.

Having a light on your vehicle’s dashboard turn on can catch your attention and even be a bit distracting. Multiple dashboard lights, however, might cause some concern.
The tire pressure light, check engine light, oil pressure warning light, and anti-lock braking system (ABS) light are some of the symbols you may see.
Different meanings are typically associated with each of them, and more than one problem could be behind the alert. But did you know that multiple dashboard lights can stem from one issue?

A few of our technicians recently received their BG Certification.
This training teaches about important mileage-based services, including brake fluid exchanges, coolant fluid exchanges, and transmission fluid exchanges.
Great work, y’all!

This week, a cooling system concern was investigated on a Ford Focus. The car was overheating when the a/c was on and after it had been driven for 30 minutes.
Our technician found that the cooling fan motor wasn’t coming on, causing the engine to overheat.
In addition to replacing the fan, we installed a new thermostat assembly, because the vehicle overheated.
A car overheating can also be caused by a bad thermostat and coolant leaks.

Oil leaks can be the result of a bad oil filter, blocked PCV system, or loose oil drain plug. In the case of a Mercedes, the oil separator/centrifuge is leaking.
To resolve the problem, we would need to replace the oil filter housing, cooler gaskets and oil separator.
Drivers may notice oil near their vehicle or that has low oil.
Certain components and processes, like the variable valve timing, are impacted by oil pressure. They can stop working when the oil level is low.

Warmer weather is on its way, and before we know it we will have the A/C system on full blast.
During this transition – where it isn’t too hot or too cold – we recommend confirming that your car’s air conditioning system is working.
If you notice that it isn’t blowing cold air or no air is coming through the vents, have the problem checked out by an auto repair shop.

A steering wheel being off center can be a tell-tale sign that a tire alignment is needed. This problem was addressed on a Honda HR-V.
The front and rear toe were adjusted. We also check the caster and camber during car alignments.
Other indicators of a bad wheel alignment include uneven tire wear and a vehicle pulling to one side.

This week, we discovered an exhaust leak on a Hyundai Santa Fe.
The leak was coming from the flex pipe. In order for the vehicle to pass the Virginia State Inspection, the problem needed to be addressed.
The bolts that link the flex pipe with the muffler were corroded. Our technician recommended a new muffler and new gaskets that connect the catalytic converter to the flex pipes.

Brake repair was recently performed on a Nissan Rogue.
As he was pulling the SUV into the bay, our technician heard a scraping metal sound. When he checked the brakes, he found no inside brake pad.
This occurred because the brake calipers weren’t releasing pressure.

Has it been a while since you cleaned out your vehicle’s cowling area or changed out the cabin air filters?
These maintenance items are often overlooked by drivers. However, checking them regularly can help drivers avoid problems.
Certain components can be found in the cowling, such as the cabin air filter and the windshield wiper motor.
During the fall and even the winter, leaves can pile up on the bottom of the windshield.
