"Do you have a boyfriend, Michaela?" asked Red abruptly.
That was one hell of a subject change. All chatter halted as everyone awaited my answer. The redhead looked at me like she seriously doubted it and I wanted to prove her wrong but I'd be lying big time.
"No."
"I've had three!" piped Bebe.
It was so hard not to cringe at that. Three ex-boyfriends. I haven't even had one! Do you just have more luck in a smaller town? Maybe being crammed into the same class over and over again with the same people gave you more time to get to know them... no, that didn't sound right.
"So who do you think is cute in our class?" questioned Wendy without flinching.
Oh my God. I didn't even know the names of the other three girls who sat at the table, but did that matter as much as which boy I thought had the best-looking face? Clearly not in this town.
"Well... no one. I just got here, like, yesterday!"
Turning in her seat, Wendy gestured to Kyle's table behind us.
"We can set you up with someone, right girls?"
"Right!" They all cheered in unison.
I couldn't help the grimace that came to my face. Several bodies, one mind, it seemed.
"Stan—the one with the blue pom pom hat—is mine, so keep your eyes off him."
The boys were getting rambunctious but out of all of them, Stan seemed to be the lone settled one.
"Red likes Craig, the one in the blue coat."
"Tolkien is taken, Oh! He's really nice that's too bad." Wendy murmured as if an afterthought. She continued to prattle off names with the other girls jumping in with commentary and my head spun trying to keep up. Why did it feel like they were talking in another language? Butters, Butters... I think that was the name of the kid who asked if the moon and sun were one during class. Jimmy...wait did Wendy say Jimmy or Timmy? Did she say both? She was pointing to a few boys across the cafeteria now. Bradley... Kevin.. I just couldn't keep up. I took a bite out of my sandwich so I didn't have to say anything.
"Bebe has been on and off with Clyde and Kyle. She just can't make up her mind! I think that's about it!"
Groaning inwardly, I tried to smile and nod. This was fucking torture.
Grinning wickedly, Wendy withdrew her hands and placed them back on the table's surface. She took a sip from her milk carton before continuing. "That leaves you with Kenny."
"Also Cartman." Heidi laughed. "You never know, he might be the one for you!"
Bursting into giggles, Bebe shoved her playfully. "Shut up! That's so mean, Heidi!"
Wendy was smirking along with the rest of the girls so it was hard to trust anything that came from her mouth. "Don't listen to her, Michaela. Kenny will be good for you. He isn't bad looking either."
I huffed. I had lost my patience. "Alright, listen," I said, standing up, "I don't know what your issue is with me, but I'm not dealing with this passive-aggressive, catty, mean girl bullshit. Either air out all your issues with me right now or shut the fuck up, okay?"
The entire table looked on in shock.
"Tolkien and Kyle both offered to let me sit with them, and I told them no because I really wanted to be friends with you girls. Silly me, huh? All you've done since I got here is do mean girl tactics and whisper catty remarks to my face thinking I wouldn't notice. Well, not anymore. Enjoy your lunch, girls."
I carried my tray and left, meeting Tolkien at his table. Thankfully, he made space for me and introduced me to his friends.
"Hey there," said a boy with messy brown hair, giving me a half-lidded glance. "What's going on?"
"Don't flirt with my cousin, Clyde!" snapped Tolkien.
I raised an eyebrow. "If that was flirting, then I don't think we have much to worry about."
Craig let out a few chuckles.
"Oh!" said a boy in yellow — Jimmy, I think that was his name. "Wow, what a great audience!"
I opened my milk carton with a huff.
"Is everything okay?" asked Tolkien.
I nodded. "Just girls acting like two-faced bitches."
"W-W-What else is n-new?" asked Jimmy.
"Just ignore them, you'll be fine," said Craig.
I glanced at the girls' table. Wendy was poking at her food, but Bebe and Heidi were giving me glares. The others were gesturing and writing on the table.
"I hope you're right."

"Do you want to sit with us, Michaela?"
"Are you sure you're alright with me sitting with you girls?" I asked skeptically.
"Of course. We really want to get to know you!"
Well that sounded fake as all hell. Wendy's reply was less then comforting, but I wanted to give this a chance. Besides, there was still time to join Tolkien and his friends if this wasn't going to pan out.
Still, it made me wonder: was there going to be some sort of hazing?
I had been standing in the same spot too long for Wendy's taste and she gently prodded my arm with her finger to get me moving. It felt like the walk of death, heading for their table.
"Sit down, new girl!" Wendy's voice interrupted my thoughts.
A girl was already sitting at Wendy's table and beckoned me beside her. She wasn't in line with the rest of us and I spotted the brown paper bag in front of her. Everyone began to drop their trays to the table and sit in their respective places. Hey... They all had fries on their trays! I exhaled through my nose.
Hazing. This was definitely a hazing.
Okay Mickey, stay calm. Don't take it seriously.
Getting over my initial annoyance about the fries—which I would have picked in the first place—I unwrapped my sandwich and was hit with the strong scent of tuna. The girls were giggling between themselves but pointedly looking at me while they did it. Meanwhile, a couple more girls joined the table and got right into their conversations, completely disregarding any form of greeting. After what seemed like an eternity of dolphin clicking, Red stopped whispering to the girl on her left. She then popped a fry in her mouth, throwing in a smile for good measure. "Alright, so what's your deal?"
"My deal?" I asked confused.
"You know, where you're from, why'd you move here, stuff like that," she clarified with a 'Can you believe her?' look at the other girls.
"Well, I moved here from the East Coast—"
"Why?" asked Bebe.
I bit my tongue. I wasn't ready to explain my parents' death to anyone. Not yet. "I don't want to get into that," I snapped a little harsher than I had to. "I live with Tolkien's family now."
A few glances were exchanged, and I couldn't tell if they were because I said I was living with Tolkien or because of how I snapped at Bebe. Probably both.
"Look, you're new here so let me explain a few things to you," said Wendy, her tone all business.
"You've got a lot to learn, Michaela," said Heidi before she ate a fry.
"We run things around here. Me, Red, Bebe, and all the other girls. We've all got our own territory and boyfriends and things like that cut out for us. You'd better learn the ropes if you want to fit in."
Well, I did want to fit in and make friends outside my cousin. "Okay, so what do I do?"
"It's not that simple Mickey," said Bebe with an eyeroll.
"Nobody fits in just like that," Red snapped her fingers. "Fitting in takes time. It takes finesse. It takes learning the inner details of our school, our clique. You have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run, you got that Michelle?"
"It's Michaela," I said with a frown.
"Whatever."
"Well, I'm willing to learn," I said. If only because I have to go to school with you for the next decade. I was regretting talking to Wendy more and more each second.
"That's a start, but only a start," said Wendy, not convinced either. "Look Michaela, we all want to help, but you have to understand that it's going to take time for you to get the hang of everything around here."
"Okay."
"And it'll take a lot longer to make any real friends. Two years, maybe one if you're lucky," said Wendy dismissively.
I nodded. "I understand." I understand that you're all totally warped and are gonna haze the hell out of me if I don't get the fuck away from you right now.

Then a girl in a purple coat and a pink beret began making her way over to me, a small smile on her face.
"Hello new girl." She said, taking a place in the line behind me.
"Uh, hi. I'm Michaela."
"Can I ask you a question?"
I rose an eyebrow. "I guess..."
Without waiting for me to answer, she spoke while gesturing up and down my body. "Who are you trying to impress, Michaela?"
Looking down at my clothes in confusion, I slowly responded with a quiet "...huh?"
A few giggles alerted me that other girls were beginning to form behind this girl, also waiting in line. There was a redhead, a brunette in a green jacket, and another girl with curly blonde hair parted in the middle.
With a fake smile, I waited for them to continue talking.
"Girls, this is Michaela," said Pink Beret, placing her hand on my back.
"I love your hat, Michaela!" said the brunette in green.
I didn't say anything. It felt like a trap.
Sure enough, she added: "It looks so much like mine!"
The smile plastered on my face turned into a toothy grimace. Ah. She likes it because it resembles her own hairstyle.
"I was just asking Michaela why she was so overdressed, Bebe." The girls frowned with her, looking at me from head to toe.
"Yeah, she could at least lose the hat." One of them whispered.
Sighing, I shuffled up the line. This wasn't going so well. Auntie told me it was cold in South Park, so I layered up. It's better than not wearing enough, isn't it? I would rather be peeling sweaters off, then standing here, freezing. I'm not taking off my hat either, it was a present and it was staying over my ears. Peering back over at them, I raised my eyebrows contemplatively.
Pink beret smiled. Or smirked, rather. "I'm Wendy," she said. "This is Bebe, Red, and Heidi."
The girls waved in turn.
"It's nice to meet you all," I lied, still unsure of their intentions. Bebe then cut in front of me, picking up a tray from the counter followed by Heidi grabbing the one next to her. "Don't take the fries," she whispered as she passed me by. The fries looked fine to me, but I wasn't going to reject a potential friend's suggestion. Staring down at the trays in front of me, I followed her advice and took the tray with the sandwich.

"Alright then Mickey," Mr. Garrison mumbled as he began to look around his classroom. "Why don't you go and sit over there next to Cartman—"
I winced again. Was that the same Eric Cartman that Tolkien warned me about?
A boy with a green hat immediately shot his hand up in the air, cutting him off.
"Uh, yes Kyle?"
"She can sit next to me Mr. Garrison, I have an empty seat here and if she sat next to fat ass he would squish her."
"Hey! Don't call me fat you goddamn Jew!"
I blinked. What the heck?
Mr. Garrison sighed. Was this normal around here? "Fine. Mickey, go sit next to Kyle so we can start the lesson."
Nodding, I obediently made my way towards the empty desk. As Mr. Garrison began to teach us about math I'd already mastered, the boy named Kyle gave me a welcoming smile.
"Hi, I'm Kyle."
"Hi Kyle, I'm Mickey."
I opened my backpack to get my notebook and pencil box, thinking that would be the end of it, but he soon spoke again.
"So where'd you move from?"
"The East Coast," I decided. "I'm still getting used to living with Tolkien's family."
"You live at Tolkien's house?"
I nodded. "They're thinking of adopting me," I said, keeping it vague. I didn't want to cause problems for Tolkien, after all.
"That's cool," he said with a smile.
The morning passed without much fuss. I thought school was hard back home, but here, it was downright easy. My mom always said coastal areas had better standards. I guess she was right.
Soon the bell rang for lunch.
"Could you please tell me where the cafeteria is?" I asked Kyle when I couldn't see my cousin. "Tolkien was supposed to show me, but I think one of the other guys needed him for something."
"Oh yeah sure. So the cafeteria is this way," he gestured to the left, "and most of the other classrooms are that way."
I gave a smile. "Awesome, thanks. Is the food any good?"
Kyle shrugged. "It's okay, I guess."
I nodded. Packing lunch it was, then. "So where does everyone sit?"
"Usually, the guys and girls sit apart," said Kyle, "but I guess you can sit with us." He paused. "If you and Tolkien are cool with it."
"That'd be great, and it'd be nice to see some friendly faces."
"I wouldn't call Cartman a friendly face," he muttered under his breath.
"What was that?"
"Oh, nothing," he said. "Just... there's one kid that kind of—no, scratch that, a total asshole."
"Is it the same Cartman that was calling you names earlier? Tolkien told me about him. I'd rather stay off his radar for now. I think Tolkien is sitting with Craig and those other guys today, so I'll join them."
Kyle looked disappointed but understood. "Okay."
We parted ways at the entrance. There were inspirational posters hung up across the walls: "Lettuce love one another!", "Fruits are fun", "Peas be seated, students!" It felt like all eyes were on me, even though in reality, no one gave a crap about the new girl. Everyone was either seated with their packed lunches or buying some.
As I was making my way over to the lunch line, I already knew where I'd be sitting. I saw Tolkien and Craig already seated, so that was one less thing to worry about.

"Are you sure that's what you're wearing?" asked my cousin, Tolkien, the next morning. "You kinda look like a black Kim Possible."
Well, that seems inaccurate, I thought. I looked down at my outfit again. I had on dark blue cargo pants that had plenty of pockets — front pockets, back pockets and two more on the side of each leg — along with a hoodless grey North Face jacket. I was even able to find a multicolored hat, with gloves to match. I had all my hair in a puff under the hat since it was so short, so at first glance, I could be mistaken for a boy.
I was as ready as I'd ever be. "Yeah, I think I'll be fine."
The drive to school was quiet, giving me time to think about how I wanted to portray myself. I was a loner at home, but maybe it'd be nice to have a friend or two. I'd stick to Cousin Tolkien for a few weeks until I could find some nice girls to befriend. If not, then I'd just do it by myself. It wouldn't be anything new.
"What are things I need to know?" I asked him as we entered the school.
"I'd stay away from Eric Cartman. He's this fat kid that's a racist asshole. I don't know why Stan, Kyle, and Kenny hang out with him."
I nodded along. "Anyone else?"
"Everyone else is okay, I guess. Craig is nice enough once you get to know him."
We parted at Mr. Mackey's office since the counselor would be introducing me to everyone. The counselor - a tall, skinny man — was polite enough, and I nodded and spoke at all the right times. He handed me my schedule and guided me down the hallway I saw Tolkien go down earlier.
Mr. Mackey knocked on the door and poked his large head inside. "Hello Mr. Garrison? Your new student is here mkay?"
"Okay Mr. Mackey, bring her in," said the teacher.
At that moment, Mr. Mackey opened the door wide, and I followed him. As we stood in front of everyone, there were a few questioning looks but nothing out of the ordinary.
"Alright everyone, this is Michaela Bolaca. She just moved to South Park mkay? Now, I want everyone to treat her kindly and with respect m'kay?"
Mr. Garrison sat on his desk and sent me a kind smile. "Alright now, why don't you tell us a little about yourself?"
I nodded and looked around the class. I would be stuck with these people until high school, so it would be best to make a good impression. "Hi, I'm Michaela but you can call me Mickey for short." I said, realizing that this was my best chance to get a cool nickname. I'd always wanted one. "I still don't know my way around yet but I hope I can make some friends and that we all get along."
The class soon began to fill with whispers about me.
"What is she wearing?" said one girl.
"Her eyes are so blue!"
"Does she have contacts?"
"She looks like a boy."
"Alright, settle down class." Mr. Garrison spoke, pleased as the class became quiet again.
"Now listen, I don't want anyone to bully Miss Michaela here mkay? Now I know that some of you girls may be jelly because she's new and she's real pretty, but don't be jelly mkay?" said Mr Mackey. "Because nobody likes a girl who's jelly, mkay?"
I couldn't help but wince at some of the looks I got from the girls. Thanks for putting a target on my back, asshole.
Once he was satisfied with the class' behaviour, Mr. Mackey nodded towards Mr. Garrison and headed out the classroom.

Take Two (Part 1/6)
Summary: After a tragic car accident, Michaela Bolaca is uprooted from her home on the East Coast and moved to South Park, Colorado, to live with her maternal aunt's family, the Blacks. But being the New Kid is rough at the best of times in the best of places. In South Park? Well, as long as she keeps her head down, she should be fine...right?
Starts a few weeks before season 7, episode 1. First Person POV.
~•~
My name's Michaela. I'm eight years old, and I just moved to South Park. My aunt, uncle and cousin live here, and now I do too. I visited once or twice before but I was too young to really remember it. Now that I've been here for a few weeks, it's official: I hate it here.
There's no one besides me and my family that are black, everyone looked at me funny all day when I was out exploring the town, and I just want to go back home.
But I can't.
"There you are Michaela!" said Aunt Linda when she opened the front door, bending down to hug me. "Oh, we were worried sick about you!"
"I'm sorry," I said.
"I know things have been hard since you've lost...well, but you can't just stay out late on a whim."
You can say it Aunt Lin, it's not like I don't already know.
"I'm sorry," I said again instead. What else was I supposed to say? It's not like I was the only one to lose someone; Mom is—was her sister.
"Are you hungry sweetie?" she asked as she guided me inside.
I shook my head.
"Alright," she said. "Your uncle Steve and I have finished the enrolment paperwork so you'll be starting school on Monday, okay? The doctors say that the injuries from the crash are all healed up so you should be okay."
I nodded, and with that I was sent up to my room.
Once I settled in I was finally able to check myself in the vanity mirror. My skin looked okay. My afro hair was still in good shape, if a little shrunken in their pigtails. I wanted a hat, though. I got enough comments about my hair, it being blonde and all. It was easier to have it covered than to deal with the 'You dyed your hair' accusations because of its uncommon color.
I lifted up my mattress to reveal the journal that I'd been keeping since before my recovery. It still hurt to look at the entries before...before.
I blinked back tears as I sat on the bed.
Everything hurt.
Why couldn't everything go back to normal? Why couldn't that drunk driver hit some other car? Why couldn't he have died instead of my mom and dad?
I gritted my teeth and swallowed, sniffing as I tossed the journal aside and dove under the covers. Crying wouldn't bring my parents back.
I was just going to have to find a way to deal.

Doesn't he like it? Quite nervous now, she continued, "The enchantments should last for about a decade. That's what Babbling told me, anyway. And there are expansion runes on the inside that expands the inside three-fold. I couldn't manage any larger."
Still silence.
Holly could feel her heart plummet at his non-reaction. Why did she have to get all 'creative'? Maybe the broomsticks were a bit much... "I guess it was a rubbish idea, I can get you something else tomorrow if you don't—"
"This," Ron began, an odd tone in his voice, "is the best gift I've ever gotten."
Feeling herself flush, Holly looked down, clasping her hands together. "That can't be true," she muttered. Sure, his family wasn't the richest, but surely if not his mum or dad, then Bill or Charlie must have sent him something just as cool.
Ron shook his head. "No, no one's ever—" he cut himself off, shaking his head. He unexpectedly pulled her into a firm hug. "Thank you."
Holly returned it with a smile.

The early morning sun flooded the windows of the Gryffindor Common room as Holly made her way down the girls' staircase. Spotting Ron in their usual corner, reading a book, she grinned and made her way over.
"Happy birthday, Ron," Holly greeted him, giving him a small punch to the shoulder as some upper-years made their way down. It was his idea to keep their still fledgling romance a secret — citing the twins and their antics — so, in public, they kept displays of affection to a minimum.
"Thanks," he said with a smile.
She sat down next to him, putting her bag on the floor beside her. "Er—here's your gift." She took out an orange-wrapped box and placed it on the table.
Ron shook his head, and Holly knew what was coming. "You already got me one? Chudley, remember?" he said, referring to the owl they had, rather ironically, owl-ordered after Scabbers had died.
"That doesn't count, that was a belated Christmas gift."
"But you already got me a Christmas gift—"
"Just take it. Please?" She widened her eyes in a silent plea.
"Fine."
He opened the present to reveal a hand-carved wooden box. It was nothing special—half the size of a Muggle shoebox and half a hand high, coloured a brilliant red. She had painstakingly carved the Chudley Cannons logo on the lid, with smaller, less detailed broomsticks surrounding it.
"You got me a Secrets box?" asked Ron, confused.
Holly knew Lavender had one for her makeup. It was a six-inch cube that she boasted held twice that. The box would lock itself every time it closed, and would only unlock when the owner used a wand and said a password.
"Well, not really, but close. I made it in Runes. Hagrid and Professor Babbling helped me out with getting the wood and carving and stuff. I had to do some extra credit projects, but it was worth it," she said with a grin, wiping her sweaty hands on her robes.
Ron stared at the present in awe. "You shouldn't have."
Holly grinned. "I wanted to. Go on, open it."
Inside was a collection of the sweets she had seen him buy during their unexpected solo Hogsmeade trip the year before, along with several non-magical novelties. He took out a packet of—"Raffa Cakes?"
"Jaffa Cakes."
"Oh," said Ron, closing the hinge-free box.
"You can set the box up to answer any password you want, you just need to tap it with your wand when you say it."
When Ron continued to examine the box, she added, "I know it's a bit small, but I didn't want to risk making it too big and messing it up, and I figured you wouldn't want something showy anyway. You always said Fred and George mess with your things and I...well, I thought it would be a good idea. Having something they don't know about and can't break into easily."
Her boyfriend continued to run his fingers over the red-stained willow wood, looking between her and the box with a neutral stare.

Easy way to solve the "missing surrogate family" problem: exclude Ron and have the Twins, Bill and Charlie become Harry's best friends! That's totally fine! /s
I think Rowling should stick to her original plan of killing Authur in ootp. Although it's cruel, it's a wonderful opportunity to give Ron(as well as Ginny and others) a deep and meaningful character arc. I personally headcanon that Luna would comfort him as she did to Harry, and maybe they would date? Sadly, his author couldn't give that without him being the one to screw up(though i think he has a point, the narrative makes it seems that it's solely his fault). Are there any fanfics about that?
Honestly I don’t think killing Arthur would make anything “deep and meaningful”. It would be a one-in-a-million example of a man being fridged instead of a woman, but eh…
Rowling has quite a weird view of what helps a teenager (or rather, on what should Ron experience in order to) mature. Either you kill one of their loved ones, or you give them a cringe romance, no in-between. What the fuck. As if there weren’t already plenty of opportunities in canon. Ron being prefect? That could be used to have him grow and take on more responsibilities, and learning to balance his more hands-off approach with putting his foot down when he needs to (… even though he already had that back in the first three books but I guess all boys become dummy-dumdumbs with puberty, thanks Joanne!).
How would Arthur’s death give meaning to anything? It would just be a gut punch, and yeah, Ron and Ginny would want to avenge their father, yadda yadda, but it’s not adding anything meaningful or deep. Ron and Ginny already have a personal reason to want Voldy gone: “the Dark Lord wants to kill my best friend personally and is planning on genociding people”, that’s pretty good incentive.
Aaaanyway you asked for fanfic recs… well I don’t really have any with this particular scenario, but there is one where Arthur’s actions have disastrous consequences on the rest of his family: Percy Take The Wheel

Fucking genius.

I have tragically yet seen a A:TLA crack fic where canon! sokka gets suck in a modern, no powers AU. While juggling his counter identity, the everlasting bullshit that's American high school, bumbling at modern devices and slang, avoiding his sister and dad of this universe, and trying to find his way home... he's just like, huh. It's nice to have a hot minute thats not being a child soldier. And thus begins Sokka's journey doing absolutely batshit insanity thinking its even remotely in the ballpark of normal which includes but is not limited to:
• Joining the cheerleaders thinking that they’re like the kyoshi warriors. Furthermore seeing the make-up and skirt as integral to the art. (He's not wrong, and pulls it off amazingly)
• Met in universe Zuko, whos currently a jerk, but isn't also a human flamethrower and literally hunting him down. Sokka's just normal about it while Zuko insistences they're rivals. They fight in the hallways at least once (less a fight and more of zuko frantically throwing punches and Sukka ducking and blocking with the utmost and infuriating chill.)
• Wants money. So what does he do? Goes to a karate competition. Wins. Then proceeds not to tell anyone. Not out of any actual secrecy but because this is pretty standard Gaang stuff back home.
Que the frantic sensei that arrives at the door answered by the very confused Katara and Hakoda.
•Gets more into martial arts and literally freaking everyone out. Turns out, spending the majority of your short little life fighting, keeping up with, beating, and trying to survive from not only full grown masters, but also masters that can control forces of nature plus maybe a spirit or two makes you pretty damn good at fighting.
• Casual parkour. Twenty-four seven. On roofs. Climbing up brick walls. Gravity defying jumps. Ridiculous reflexes.
Naturally the modern him that lands in his universe is just screaming 24/7. But hey, they both go home in the end. Canon sokka gets a break, modern sokka gets a crisis, as a treat.
