Many people have already discussed the way Zuko and Katara are linked by the loss of their mothers. I and others have also meta'd about the differences in how they interact with their fathers, a comparison the show highlights in "The Awakening," where Zuko faces his father for the first time in years and is forced to repress his emotions, vs Katara being allowed to express her hurt towards her father and being treated with kindness and compassion by Hakoda. But another comparison between Ozai and Hakoda that I have not seen anyone bring up before is this one:
Both Zuko and Katara running to their dads for help upon discovering that something has happened to their mothers. Hakoda immediately stops what he's doing to let Katara take him to Kya, while Ozai does not even acknowledge Zuko. Zuko's angry "where is she?" to Ozai also implies that he knows his father is the cause of her disappearance. There's also an emphasis on the fact that Hakoda is defending the village when Katara comes to him whereas Zuko finds Ozai tending to his own wounds and refusing to acknowledge what his children might be feeling.
The father as protector of the family vs the father who divides the family.
As someone who does not really vibe with Zutara (mainly because aroace katara is everything to me, and I like some zukka fic), I do not understand why people seem so fucking mad about it? Like, you reblogged one (1) post being slightly negative about Azutara and you got like... 3 hate anons in the span of 15 minutes, and that's just the ones you answered. My respect for you and the ship community at large has just doubled, how do you do it?
Also wanted to send some love your way, because the anons seem rough. I liked the fics of yours I have read, even as someone who doesn't really vibe with romance-centered fiction! You're really good at crafting dialogue, and I love the nuances and subtext in conversations when you write.
First of all, THANK YOU!! I love writing and I love hearing that other people connect with my work. Even if it's not your normal taste, I'm glad that you like it.
Second of all, thank you so much for thinking of me. I'm fine though. I'm mostly amused by that annon. It is hilarious how tight the booty cheeks on some people clench when you call them on their hypocrisy. I didn't even post that in the Azutara tag. That's someone I found posting in the Zutara tag, and I had time for them tonight. Truly, I don't care much what other people ship as long as they keep it cute, keep it classy and keep it over there. But if they do want to stir the pot, they can eat from it, too.
i don’t tolerate katara slander. the fandom (esp on tiktok) always downplays her trauma and find her annoying because she “rambles on about her dead mother all the time”, when in fact she has only mentioned her a handful of times to connect with others and to reassure them. People don’t realise that she didn’t just lose her mother, she felt that she was responsible for her death and lives with survivors guilt because of it. Let’s not forget that her mother sacrificed herself to save katara which makes her grief all the more palpable. (She literally witnessed her mum’s corpse as well)

About this event - this is the last time Katara and Aang interact before Ozai is defeated right? Then this was supposed to be the culmination of the interaction between their character arcs - Katara finally lets Aang go, stops trying to shield him from things he has to see or do.
It's just that this event feels so underwhelming precisely because it's overlapping with a zutara moment - and in the tierlist of zutara moments, this particular one is Just Another Tuesday; even one like this overshadows the penultimate Aang-Katara interaction and that's caught me by surprise. It took me till now to realize this moment was supposed to conclude Aang-Katara interactions in the show.
I think the whole season 3 was pretty scruffed and crumpled, but there really should have been a bigger emphasis on the resolution if the show wanted to keep the relationship between Katara and Aang a significant thread, and I'm not even talking about the romantic attempt.
