You know what weirded me out in The Sunshine Court? The Ravens destroyed Jean's postcards and magnets but I was shocked that throughout the first ≈31% of the book Riko didn't contact Jean at all with a message or a mean phone call or anything after he revealed that he was in online classes.

I understand that Wymack put Jean's cell phone in the freezer so Riko definitely could have been doing that but Zane really never told anybody else that Jean emailed him? And Riko didn't think to do any digging to check or find some back door? I always imagined him to go above and beyond when going after someone- especially after the way Renee left in Lazarus...

Riko as a victim is more fascinating and interesting than Riko as a mindless abuser

three criminal families and their three unwanted sons; Neil with a mother who helped him to escape, Jean sold and Riko desperately grasping for anything that would give him his fathers love

Two princes of Exy; the nephew of Tetsuji Moriyama, and the son of Kayleigh Day. It's all Riko ever knew. It was all he could be.

Neil Josten spent two weeks in Evermore. Jean spent five years. Riko spent his entire life under his uncles thumb, in the dark.

The Foxes are all victims of the horrors of life and they all lash out in different ways; violence, murder, alcoholism, drugs. Every single Raven is angry and violent, and that's with only a fraction of the abuse the Perfect Court suffered.

Neil had his mother. Kevin had Wymack, and Andrew. Jean had Renee, and now Jeremy. Riko only ever had Kevin.

Riko is what Neil might have been. Riko is the failure to Neil's success story. Riko was the other life, the other path.

Riko was at most 20 years old.

To negate everything Riko suffers and assume him to be awful for the sake of awful negates his entire role in the story. It insults everything Neil is as someone who got off that path, as someone who turned out differently, it insults those who helped him. If Riko was awful purely for the fun of it, then it wouldnt matter that Neil fought and fought against the Nathan in him, if Riko is innately bad and everyone else in the story is simply innately good.

Riko was a hurt child doing awful, awful things. He is an interesting and complex character. Nobody has to like him or forgive him. But hes so much more complex than 90% of this fandom give him credit for

Can we talk about this? Nora writes consent so beautifully. This is on par with "I won't be like them; I won't let you let me be" and Andrew saying no to Neil touching his arm when Neil wanted to know how Andrew could stand his touch.

Jeremy recognizes Jean is abused and, despite feeling attraction, he immediately tells Jean to tell him if he ever feels unsafe in the sense of pursuing him... but when Jean says he feels unsafe in a conversation, Jeremy backs down and respects it even if this is an important discussion.

List of things Kevin did/was revealed he had done in TSC that broke my heart:

He gave Jean postcards and magnets from his travels because Jean never got to see the world the way he did and Jean cherished them dearly.

He made Jean promise he wouldn't try to kill himself again, and Jean is still holding on to that promise. Kevin once again, making sure to protect his loved ones in the tough-love manner (truly his father's son).

He gave advice to Jeremy as to how Jeremy can help Jean adjust, revealing some truths about Raven lifestyle and probably also exposing his own vulnerabilities.

"Will you teach me when he is not watching? It could be our little secret."

Things that just made me fall more in love with Kevin overall:

He was a drama queen to the Ravens as a distraction so he could help Jean.

Kevin being described as a bitch, diva, drama queen etc

"Take Kevin's name out of your ignorant mouth."

Kevin being so caring overall with Jean (holding his hand, being soft with him and giving him a better chance with the Trojans)

Jean defending Kevin. "He has earned the right to be arrogant."

Kevin being a lot more confident, especially after changing the tattoo, standing his ground, and being something stable for Jean to lean on.

Jeremy trusting Kevin that he wouldn't fuck the Trojans over with Jean, because he knows Kevin and he knows he is a good friend.

Beautiful boy Kevin leaning into Jean's space, whispering French in secret behind Riko's back.

Nora was truly honest when she mentioned that we would be getting a whole new perspective of Kevin.

Neil pulling up, killing a guy, walking the FBI around like dogs because he found it amusing, making a trained cop feel guilty for him (a criminal), making up the best alibi and lie on the spot (even Jean was impressed), finding his way back to the ATM no problem despite never having been in the city before (Jean was getting lost).

Neil being a “safe line to follow home” for Jean

Confirmation that Kevin was also severely physically abused prior to having his hand broken
