A Eulogy for Dave Hakstol

He's not dead, but he did get fired.

Not gonna lie, I am quite shocked by the fact that the org let Dave go. It's true that this season was not the greatest but I was convinced that they would keep Dave at least to start the season next year, with the knowledge that he had a 'warm' seat based on how the season started. Apparently I was very wrong! Now Dave and assistant coach Paul McFarland have both been let go, and new head coach search is beginning immediately, per Ron Francis and the press release. (McFarland was the forwards/PP coach and frankly, I'm okay with him being gone, given the offensive struggles we had. Also I had no idea who he was, whoops.)

I'm also quite sad about it! I will bang the drum all day that Dave's hiring was absolutely the correct one for a young franchise looking to establish its identity and culture as an organization and what they wanted that to look like. Haks had a open door policy where players felt like they could approach him, was fiercely protective of them and never played the blame game, and seemed to be genuinely respected and well-liked by his players. And we're losing that which makes me feel very unsettled and anxious about what comes next. Especially given how the NHL seems to revolve around a limited number of coaches, some of whom seem to be terrible people!

Do I think Dave was the perfect coach? No, clearly there were issues. I do think his firing (or being let go) was inevitable and he did not feel like the type of coach that was gonna take us on a cup run. (I love you Haks, truly, but you weren't that guy.) There was so much inconsistency this year that was incredibly frustrating to watch, and I feel like that very much came down to coaching. I don't think this season's woes can all be laid at his feet (certainly some of Ron's personnel decisions also impacted the team) but at end of the day, a coaching change is a singular, 'easy' way to create change in a room when things are going off the rails. So here we are.

I definitely have a list of head coaches I would like to see on the Kraken, as well as a list of coaches I never wanna hear mentioned in the same vicinity, but I think I'll wait until we get a little farther down the road to get into it. The Kraken organization has a very critical decision to make right now, as the coach it selects will be setting the tone of the org, the room, and the culture for the next several years.

At least we'll always have cunty DILF Dave Hakstol in his Winter Classic jacket, RIP.

I'm so glad we could go out on a high note with a win. All the guys fought so hard to get a victory. I love this team so much, and I've loved celebrating the epic highs and lows of Kraken hockey with the lb crew this season. Seeing familiar faces and newcomers join in on this little corner of tag space we've carved out here on tumblr is just so comforting every game.
