The Struggle of Parenthood

      “ Listen, Val... ” Nate spoke with a light sigh. “ I don't appreciate it when your parents come to visit, and they act like we don't know how to take care of our baby just because we had him when we were a bit young. ” The man met Valerie when he was a freshman at Columbia University, pursuing a career in journalism, and she was a senior at Constance Billard School for Girls. They had a casual thing going, but one broken condom led to an unplanned pregnancy ---- and neither of the two wanted to give the baby up. Being the decent guy that he was, Nate moved both Valerie and their baby into a penthouse that he had converted from his bachelor pad to a family home. Their relationship was a bit rocky, however. Nate loved his son dearly, but he wasn't in love with Valerie, and it was easy to tell that she was in love with him. The two of them kept their casual thing going, lived and raised their baby together. 

      With Valerie's parents clear dislike of him, it was impossible for him to be welcomed into the family or even feel strongly for Valerie. To him, it always felt like she was defending her parents and going against him with all of the choices for their baby. Nate thought that was the whole reason that they moved in together, to get away from the interference. “ And it's completely obvious that they hate me. Way to hold a grudge. ” Nate rolled his eyes at the thought. He was always a good guy, but it had really been getting under his skin recently; especially when Valerie's parents came to celebrate their son's birthday. All Nate felt like was that they were making comments to him about the way he was taking care of his family.

Muse A and Muse B were in a tumultuous relationship years ago. It was full of lust and desire, but the young lovers had a tendency for hot-tempered, vicious arguments. They broke up mutually and moved on, realizing that the situation was never going to give way to something healthy, but neither truly got over the other. Even though Muse A and Muse B are both in loving, stable relationships in the present time, it lacks the fervor of the connection they had with each other, and thoughts constantly wander to their old flame, wishing their new relationship had that same passion. Late one night, Muse B picks up the phone and dials Muse A, simply wanting to hear their voice. Muse A is shocked and hesitant to speak with Muse B considering their significant other is sleeping in bed in the next room, but is unable to hang up, emotions running high. The calls continue nightly in secret. After several conversations, both agree they need closure to move on, and decide to meet in person.

         A morning jog in the city of Metropolis            always helped the man clear his head            before what would I N E V I T A B L Y            be a difficult day at the office of The            Daily Planet. On this morning he saw           a p a r t i c u l a r l y gorgeous woman            at a coffee shop he usually inhabited           after his run. He had to speak to her.      

        It was at that point that Nate          realized just how out of touch          he was with things like flirting,          because he hadn't done much          since his last real relationship          and he inwardly sighed. He          still had to go for it. He owed it          himself to move on from the past.          He put on his trademark smile;       

                       “ I'll cover your coffee for you,  I couldn't help but                                    overhear that we're ordering the same thing.  I                                    come here often, and I haven't really seen you.                                    You have a face I'd remember ---- I'm Nate.                                             Nate Archibald.  

      “ Well, we just met ---- but I'm n o t going to complain.
