My man Banshee and his baby girl Siryn got forgotten about again... Fr tho if you ask someone to name a mutant or X-Men character, there's 3/4 chances that it's a mutant with a mythology related name. The 1/4 is animal related like Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Toad, ...
(I know it doesn't really count but Nightcrawler's codename got changed in a few countries to Diablo which makes him fall under mythology related name, same with Rogue who's called Vampira in some places... Nobody got bothered by that and there seems to be way less people in general in those spots who had a problem with the idea of mutant groups in general)
Is it wrong if I say I like the names Diablo and Vampira better than Nightcrawler and Rogue? lol. I like their original names fine but Diablo and Vampira roll off the tongue better and sound cooler.

It's the right time to bring up that Warren's codename as a mutant is a mythological creature (Angel/Archangel), same with Jean Grey (Phoenix), Scott Summers (Cyclops), John Proudstar (Thunderbird), Wanda Maximoff (the Scarlet Witch), Hank McCoy (Beast), ...
They're already using mythology as a way to name their mutant identity so what's the best option here ?
The mutant group gets named by the ones ones in it. If no name pleases anyone, use the codename of the superhero with the characteristics of the group. If it's all about pr, there's no better pr
Lmao you're right almost ALL of them are named after some type of mythological figure!
Fans have weird places where they draw the lines on things.

My favourite scientific name given to an animal was a horse fly that looked like a bee and ended up being called Scaptia beyonceae
I wish that fly instead of buzzing would go "Uh oh uh oh woah no no no no"

Bit telling that for years and years evangelical religious extremists have been allowed on university campuses with their bullhorns and horrific imagery where they harass students into physical altercations and when students complain to the university’s administration they just shrug their shoulders citing freedom of speech but when those same tuition-paying students start protesting against war and genocide they call SWAT

Hearing people say "you can't use the names of mythological/fictional creatures to name real ones" tells me they're not scientists.
When you make a big big discovery, uncover a new element or find new species that still exist or went extinct, guess what ? YOU GET THE RIGHT TO NAME IT WHATEVER WAY YOU WANT. It's half the fun.
And scientists are first and foremost NERDS. There's half a dozen animals species out there that were named after comicbook characters. And the cases where we borrowed names from mythology to make official scientific names/common ones ? Let me think a few examples
- Greek gods : Gaia + Uranus (Tanaid) + Artemis (flower), Mercury + Venus + Mars + Jupiter+ Saturn + Uranus + Neptune + Pluton (planets), Aphrodite (sea mouse), Mercury (element)
- Greek mythological creature : Titans (titanium), Prometheus (promethium), Hydra (the hydra animal genus), Atlas (an atlas is a collection of maps), Chimera (chimerism in biology), Medusa (jellyfishes have a phase called medusa which is why they're part of the clade Medusozoa)
- Greek characters : Sisyphus (Spider), Daphne + Narcissus + Acanthus & Co (so many flowers), Tantalus (tantalum), Echo (acoustics)
- Other : The Devil/Demons (Nickel comes from the German word kupfernickel which stands for "Devil's copper" where Nickel is a demonic German creature), Kobold (Cobalt), Thor (thorium)
TL;DR : Flash news, scientists are nerds who like fiction.
Exactly you're right anon. And it even goes beyond scientists into Technology and Support based systems. I found out a couple years ago that JIRA tickets are called JIRA because they're named after Godzilla in Japan pronounced as "Gojira".
And into like the days of the week with Thursday being Thor's day.
And back to Biology Dragonfruit, Dragonflies and Komodo Dragons.

That sweet innocent anon had probably never witnessed the insane crime community on this website XD. I personally don't find it interesting for Sabretooth to be Wolverine's dad and like someone else said, xmen is all about daddy issues so more bro issues pretty please. On a funnier note, Sabretooth being Wolverine's father would mean Mystique did father and son
Elementals would be fantastic. So what kind of new mutant group would be cool and help world building for X-Men...
Reactors, like energy reactors. People who can generate and/or use energy, any and all types of energy. You can put Bishop and Gambit here.
Vampirics, life energy drainers.
Reality-benders are already a thing so maybe stretch the definition to include those who alter the perception people have of reality without relying on mind powers
Amphibians, those whose powers makes them able to live on both land and water.
Extra-S, short for extra sensory. You can put all the mutants here who only had their senses and the organs tied to them altered. A mutant with more eyes? Enhanced sight and layered vision (infra red, ultraviolet, ...). A mutant with an unusual skin pigmentation (purple, green, orange) ? Different touch receptors, higher sensitivity to changes in the environment and different vitamin production.
Just a few ideas thrown in there that wouldn't make a mutant feel less important because they don't even have a worthy power level or find any use to their less impossible mutation
Its suprising because the weirdo criminal fandom circles have infiltrated almost all of social media so it wouldn't be hard to see them but also on the news we hear of copycat killers and such so idk, I mean if being a killer was something that would turn people away from Supervillains then like wouldn't all the Supervillains in Marvel be unable to find partners? lmao. I think Reactors is a good name or like Generators.
Vampirics is a good term for Rogue and characters similar to her but then I feel like some people are gonna be like youcantuseamythologicaltermbecauseI'LLMISINTERPRETIT
Are there that many reality benders? honestly I think this is such a bad power for characters to have so if I ever have to make a character thats inspired by one I'm gonna be dropping that aspect of them so hard. Mostly because its such an unbalanced and broken power that its hard to have these characters on any team and write them without running into "why dont they just use their power to warp reality?"
Amphibians is good.
I feel like maybe Sixth Sensors? idk. Thats a tricky one to name.

call me crazy but seeing how many secondary mutations just so happen to be physical ones (beast, emma frost) why not just call the thing like they'd do it in real biology?
the first mutation onset is metamorphosis which means "the process by which the young form develops into the adult form" because mutations usually happen at puberty
the secondary mutation onset is morphosis which means "sequence of change in an organism" so there's an option for it to happen at any time after metamorphosis
Saving this for later

might like the concept of mutant groups more if Marvel bothered to delve into them beyond surface level before totally dropping them. you talked about Pokémon, i love those games and having every Pokémon with one or many evolved forms was a good idea.
so if we apply the same pokemon logic to mutants in X-Men we could get something like... feline/canine mutants having a secondary mutation where they'd be turning into a werewolf version of themselves (like for wolfsbane) ?
Thats the thing Marvel introduces these ideas then doesn't follow up on then then fans who disliked it initially get louder and louder about it until its either retconned away or forgotten about. This type of thing is why the genre has barely evolved since the 90s.
I think we need a term for Secondary Mutations too. And this is Definitely not to help me name a similar concept in my story that I'm writing. No siree!

Sabretooth as Wolverine's papa makes me go 🙃 because... Who would want to willingly have a kid with Sabretooth (you can say mystique but lord knows how long until they retcon this from her too)
Mutant groups like the Feline/Canine, Psionics, Cheyarafim and Neyaphem make more sense to me as a way for mutants to class each other than the power level one because for that one, some mutants would not be in any category or would just be "potentially" x category which means nothing overall. The power creep would get crazy too and that's bad worldbuilding
I think we should add a category called "Elementals" for mutants able to either manipulate or turn into elements from fire, to water, to metal, ... Because in a school setting and under supervision, they could help each other improve on the way they control their powers by assigning a mutant who can control X element to another who can become said element
I mean there's women who swoon over serial killers and men who feel the same way about criminal women. So the whole "who would be willing to" a larger amount of people than you would think LOL.
Yeah the power level categorisation is just generic and doesn't really tell you anything about them other than "REALLY STRONG" or "QUITE STRONG".
Yes I agree I think Elementals should be a category with sub categories of each element type kinda like with Avatar but also like Pokemon.

It's very strange to me to see people compliment Chuck Austen on anything he did for X-Men. Not saying the dude was great or good but I feel like people bash on Austen for the sake of bashing him especially ever since THIS X-Men comic era (2019-2024) started cuz we had so much worse come out and this went on for like more than twice the length of Austen's run. Hell I dunno if you know this but the amount of comics that came out in nearly 5 years were more than half of what came out since the 60s for everything X-Men. This era was saturated with runs, reruns, one shots, minis, ... And you can count on one hand what was actually good in all of that. I know many old fans who used to hate Austen's run with passion who now find themselves saying "Krakoa is worse... And it took story elements from his run while it was at it so the X-Office doesn't even learn or get creative"
Polaris deserved better in this era and I genuinely thought she'd get some spotlight after Magneto died. Maybe in his absence. Maybe in the July relaunch... Only for that to not only not happen but during that time frame they brought him back to life. Who resurrected him ? Storm. What was Lorna doing at the time ? Leading the Brood attack on the anti mutant organisation
It might be that Austen was the first time fans felt truly disappointed with an X-Men writer on the main books. Before that they had Claremont and they had Morrison on the other half during Austen's run. I will always say he at least made an effort to focus in characters who so often got pushed to the side by other writers and I'm mainly talking about Nightcrawler and Polaris but there are some others he chose to focus on. Not just Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean (and later Emma Frost) who got the focus over and over again to the point of annoying me.
In hindsight because of how bad modern comics are I can see people going back to Austen and not even liking him but thinking "wait there was a time THIS was the worst X-Men books?"
